A human female born into a breeding manor never has a choice…I am a slave, but at least I am alive.

When the man with wings and scales gave me a second choice—I took it. The others of his kind pin me with hungry eyes, but I’ll do what I must to survive. I'll preside over their Draken Games—and choose a winner every night to share my bed. The alternative is death.

Traded from one prison to the next I have but one hope left—the Lost Siren. I must find her before the demon hordes come if these men—Drakens—have any chance of escaping their mountainous prison, and me along with them.

Perfect for fans of Jennifer L. Armentrout, The Lost Siren is the exhilarating introduction to the Rise of the Drakens series.

This is a full length reverse harem/poly fantasy novel. Warning: there are dark themes and possible triggers.

It was a good premise, but it was poorly executed.
Possible Spoilers ahead

First of all, this book was definitely inspired by a few other popular series, including Acotar.

The world building needs work. A lot of work. You are thrown into the story without any background or even an explanation of what the various creatures are. There are mentions of some curse, but even by the end of the book that whole plot line never made any sense.
The drakens are somehow cursed to stay inside this mountain, all except the king. But who cursed them? And why? That’s never made clear at all. It’s mentioned that if the king finds the lost siren and mates with her then they will all be stuck under the mountain forever. But WHY???? That doesn’t even make sense. But then he DOES find the lost siren (which is super obvious the moment the siren is first mentioned that Wren is the lost siren) and he does mate with her. And it’s super obvious to a few others as well only nobody wants to actually tell her. Once she figures it out the curse is broken apparently and they can all leave the mountain. So why didn’t they just tell her to begin with? None of this made any sense.

The entire book seemed rushed. We are supposed to see 7 challenges but I guess the author wasn’t clever enough to come up with anything past “draken fight club” because after the first challenge, the 2nd one gets interrupted and cancelled by the king, and the 3rd one gets interrupted and cancelled by the MC. So we don’t actually get more than 1 challenge.

Finally towards the end Wren tells the kings uncle (who is a huge douche) that she wants to have another challenge, this time a loyalty test of some kind. It’s some plan she has to prove loyalty to the king. Only she never reveals her plan or how it’s supposed to work to anyone, not even the reader. Uncle douche gets everything ready for the loyalty challenge, and we are at the arena waiting for Wrens brilliant plan and the suddenly we are in the middle of some huge battle and there are vampires and demons everywhere that just appear out of nowhere to kill everyone. Uncle douche is obviously plotting to kill his own son (WHY???) and have demons kill everyone else (again, WHY????) and then he will kill the king and be king. This entire scene comes out of nowhere with no explanation about what the loyalty test was supposed to be or how Uncle Douche got all these demons and vampires into the mountain without anyone noticing. Or how a human girl (who is secretly a drakon but doesn’t know it yet) magically became an expert fighter and manages to survive this battle that leaves a bunch of trained draken warriors dead.

Which brings me to another point. It’s obvious that the author has read Acotar. She should probably take note of the fact that Feyre spent MONTHS training with Cassian and Azriel before she could fight at all. And when she turns fae and figures out how to shift wings, it takes months of training with Azriel to learn how to fly. So please explain how little moss Wren, beaten and half starved human, was able to become an expert fighter after half a training lesson in which she almost dies? When she gets wings she just takes right off. No awkwardness, no muscle training, nothing.

The fact that the king was at the “breeding house” to pick up a human girl, and was supposed to get the blonde girl (Bella) but changed his mind and took Wren instead is never addressed again. I figured it would be part of the plot since it was mentioned several times. It’s sloppy and lazy storytelling.

The spice needs work as well. The scenes were rushed and there were many steps that were skipped over. Like maybe the author isn’t comfortable writing these scenes. Nobody wants to read that the king is a 3 pump chump when we finally get to the good part. He literally crashes into the room, announces “I’m first”, spends less than 2 minutes thrusting away without even touching her with anything but his “member” (ew by the way. I thought we left that word in the 80s where it belongs?) then he finishes and leaves. We wait more than half the book for that. Pathetic.

I was hoping for a new fantasy series starring dragons because I haven’t found much of that. And I was promised smut. I got a bad Acotar/FBAA rip off that was poorly written and lacked any depth at all. And it didn’t even have decent smut.

- 10000000000 stars: what grammar proof reading happened here!? I found at least a ten in the first three chapters. This read like a fanfiction to another story I was supposed to know. The exposition for world building was atrocious. The characters were some what likable but overall the story was predictable, with little details where it needed it and over all felt like a rip off of ACOTAR and From Blood And Ash.

This isn’t usually something I’d read but I’ve been trying to open up to new things and the reviews on Apple Books were pretty good. I’m just going to split up my thoughts into sections. (Apologies in advance because this is going to be a long one.)

Characters:

Wren-
For a chapter or two I almost believed she had a shot at being a rare likable FMC but that went out the window quickly. No development whatsoever. Infantilizing and “sexually liberating” a character at the same time is always a distasteful combo. The story wants the reader to believe that she has this control and power over the men yet actively shows us coercion and abuse. The few characters that do respect her and treat her well do so to an extreme that makes no sense. Overall not like-able and nothing positive that happens to her is earned.

Benedict-
Belongs in prison. There’s not a single redeeming quality I can think of. Every aspect of his interactions with Wren are creepy and or abusive. The scene with him crying at the end seemed like a horribly failed attempt at humanizing him. Regardless of his feelings that doesn’t negate from how horribly he treated her.

Kieran & Ronan- basically the same character. Really the only redeeming quality to this trashfire of a book. Flat but at least they understand consent.

None of the other characters really matter, they occasionally “push the plot along” with info dumps or provide dialogue filler.

Overall Story:

Feels like a VERY rough draft. I liked the concept of the whole war and even though the whole premise of saving the drakens was jarring, it could’ve worked. Aside from the major elephant in the room that I will come back to, pacing was this book's biggest enemy.
There’s a difference between foreshadowing and spoon feeding the readers every little detail. The “twist” itself was predictable but might not have been so obvious if the writing had a better flow. A little over 300 pages is not long enough to properly due the world building justice as well as building not 1 but 3 romantic relationships. There was no time to flesh out any of the characters. Wren and Benedict grew increasingly unlikable throughout this book and lacked any chemistry whatsoever. Every time the story felt halfway decent it was like getting smacked in the face with a poorly written smut scene. My big issue with this book is I can’t tell if the writer just doesn’t care enough about their work to fix these issues or if she genuinely doesn’t see any problems

Ew:

The author poorly handled sensitive subject matter and tried to sell SA as sexy when it is not.
Any halfway decent writer could capture passion and kink while still respecting basic boundaries and consent. (Somehow she still failed to capture that too, those scenes were boring a stiff and overall just unnecessary). It would have been very easy for Benedict to be dominant without crossing the lines that he did. At this point there’s no excuse for authors mishandling this subject matter. Ever. If you’re going to write romance, especially of the 18+ nature then you should always understand how to handle something this basic yet important.

What did I just read? Let me just say the FMC started out as a weak, submissive, slave, that didn’t have any fight in her, and only wanted to use kindness towards others. Then she gets captured, and all the sudden within a minute she is snarky and fierce. And then within a couple days, she somehow knows how to wield a knife properly and can throw accurate throws….. don’t even get me started on the world building because there was none.

I really wanted to DNF this, but since it was so short, I figured I would read through and give this review. Thankfully, it was free on Kindle so I didn’t spend any money wasting on this book, just my time. I would not recommend this read

The Lost Siren was just BAD. Don't waste your time. It needs a lot of work, better characters, and a story that doesn't try to mimic other popular series like ACOTAR. If I met this MC in real life, I'd happily push her out of a window.

Where to even start. I give this 2.5 stars realistically. This book was lowkey trash and not even trash i could get off too.

The plot was interesting but i could not get over the pacing. I liked that we got to see the FMC grow into a stronger person who was more confident in her self as the book went on, but it felt like it happened out of nowhere.

The king was a piece of work and i honestly hated him. He was a selfish asshole and i couldn't stand how the FMC always forgives him. Everytime they had sex i wanted to stop reading, that's how annoyed i was by them both. The only males i liked, i felt like we didnt get enough of.

I won't be continuing on in the series which makes me a little sad because i love a really strong FMC especially one that we get to see grow.

The plot was interesting, although sometimes it dragged. The biggest hurdle for me was the constant grammar errors. At the very least, a second read through should have caught the mistakes. I haven't decided if I want to read the next in the series.

Well looks good uh ? A RH with dragons ? I hope the storyline isn’t much predictable...ok who I’m kidding? I just hope this one has a LOT of sex and is hot like hell hahaha that’s are my expectations. But I won’t lie I’m finding the world building interesting so humans are slaves because now supernaturals rule ? Well this sucks hahaha but makes sense and this breeding house ? Damn it this is scary .

Ok I’m f*cking intrigued why they took her ? What are the games ? How much guys ? I’m serious....HOW MUCH GUYS ? Because when she entered the hall ...she didn’t put a number like 5 or 6 ...she just said something like they are all males ....so ... HOW MUCH ? For goddess sake I’m starting to get worried for her hahaha .

“Not all men beat women when they were alone, did they?”

Wow... now we can see how the world our girl lived was a sh*t ...well not that this doesn’t happen in our world too but ...damn . Well I’m just in the beginning and D’Arcy is a asshole hahaha well I like assholes so everything good here , Benedict is the king ? interesting ...I like his personality too he has humor !! I’m grateful that Wren isn’t a crying mess she has some fire can you believe it ? Hahaha .

“But why?” I couldn’t put into words why this was so important; why it mattered that this man, this...Draken had chosen me over a beautiful, young blonde who could likely fetch a small fortune at any auction.
“You said yes.”

Well...isn’t he a gentleman? Hahaha at least my question is answered. Oh ok now another question meet it answer hahaha seven ? Ok seven is a good number a little too much but we can work with seven , the first RH I read was with seven males so this looks like the good old times hahaha . Ok I’m a little confuse ... D’Arcy is good or bad ? Because I sincerely don’t know .

Kieran and Ronan ? Hahaha I like them and I hope them give me some M/M action too 😋. Sweet baby Lucifer...the Drakens apparently have a hard time controlling themselves...our two sweet boys included...not in a good way I’m afraid . Guys....the hot scenes in this book ....is so good I’m blushing like a virgin , I’m seriously the things are HOT ...f*ck I love this possessive thing, but someone really need to take the stick out of Benedict ass I’m seriously the first time of him and Wren was like this ? Damn man ... and I officially don’t like D’Arcy .

I’m thinking...can she have a Lykos in her Harem too ? I want the big black one hahaha I’m not sure if I like Bair he acts like a petulant child...well he is a dum f*cker to say the truth nothing like his brother. I like how Wren is strong now , she uses all her ... charms and I particularly think she is a badass for it , you know guys some battles you have to fight with different methods and if my memory isn’t wrong I think this is the first book the female lead REALLY uses all her artificies.

Ok Benedict is horrible...the worst mate to exist in all universe, the boy yeah BOY because he doesn’t act like a man , tha motherf*cker doesn’t deserve her , I really hope she kick his ass and make him knee to be accepted back .

Damn it ...I swear I thought this was a standalone...I’m particularly disturbed with the cliffhanger in the end ...I’m so careful to not read books that the continuation isn’t out yet ...and here I am ...but ok the book is good , not wonderful but just good , some things could be better , Wren has three mates until now Kieran and Ronan are sweethearts but they could have some more personality and a backstory for us to understand them better , Benedict...well I don’t really like him I’m being honest , his actions are all wrong , he want to be a good king but in my view he was a egoistical asshole , I don’t understand his motives or why he treated her so bad ...but I’m anxious for the next one , and I hope she take how her mate the Big Black Lykos too yeah I know he appeared just in one scene ...but what can I do ? I fell in love hahahaha .

I actually really enjoy this author's writing style and she spins a good story but this one didn't sit well with me. I disliked the way the relationships developed between the main characters and how the FMC was treated at times. But mostly the main premise behind the story makes no sense.

Have you ever read an "The Last Female Of a Species" story? The entire future of Drakon kind rests on the Lost Siren the last female Drakon being found claimed and bred. Think about that for one second, if the last female has children then who will the children procriate with!? There siblings! NO!?
Think of the children! Won't someone think of the Children! 😱

Come on we can do better than this sad hopeless plot people, okay onto better things...

DNFed at like 137 pages because the characterization was a dumpster fire and the dialogue was wattpaddy. Also that fact that she tolerated Benedict after he called her a “breeding cow” was the last straw for me because excuse me, WHAT??

Also how does she magically know how to handle knives and speak eloquently after literally being enslaved for 22 years with no education whatsoever? I think authors sometimes forget that the world building and characterization isn’t supposed to be something we read between the lines, that information needs to be conveyed.

All in all, it’s a promising plot idea but poorly executed.

I am so conflicted.

On the one hand I read it in one go until 5 am because I wanted to know what happened but on the other hand I felt like it had so much potential that it wasted.

SPOILER ahead:

WREN (FMC) is dumb, but I support stupid women all day 👍 but sometimes you gotta ask how she didnt question it when she emitted a draken distress call multiple times and still thinks she's human.... The fact that she let Benedict talk to her this way and is still attracted to him after all the shit he pulled?? Like, babygirl, PLEASEE gather some braincells my love 😭

But I didn't dislike her as a character. Even tho I didn't like her decisions sometimes I still felt like they were understandable.

BENEDICT (MMC) is a cruel idiot. An absolut himbo. Wait no, himbos are well-meaning and innocent and he is not. His bafoonery is astonishing and I request he be beaten in the nuts until he pukes and begs for mercy. I wanna see tears and regret and I want him to beg her to love him. I want to see him fall to his knees and grovel.

Like, my man, HOW do you screw up so bad? How do you save a woman from horrible conditions, be the first man in her life she trusts and the one DESTINED to be her mate and still fuck up? You had all the cards in your hands and just had to be, like, not cruel and a decent person. But no, you threw it all away and set the table on fire. Shame on you!

KIERAN saved the book for me. For like half the book I was convinced he was the only one who had a soul in this book which is ironic since he's ginger. (Sorry, I had to) He was nice, that was the only thing he had going for him but DAMN he pulled through and delivered. The way he walked into a room and got a traumatized woman from "standing there terrified and in defense with a blade" to "wanting to risk it all and give him her virginity" was just *chefs kiss*. A true gentlemen.

If there is not a spinoff where he is a dad I will riot. He deserve everything. Not gonna lie, 2 out of the 3 stars are just for him.

SMUT: The sex scenes were... Okay. I feel like they were under-written. The only one I enjoyed was her first time with Kieran (and Ronan) because they actually focused on her pleasure before sticking their sticks in her.

Benedict, not even breathing near her clit, waited till she was hot and ready by the hand of others, stormed in, piped her and left. What the fuck was that? What was the REASON? Would it have killed you to touch her lovingly? An immortal king who doesn't even know what a G-Spot is.

The few following sex scenes where just with him and he didn't learn a thing. How Wren found that pleasurable was beyond me and I had to skip. Hate-sex is not my thing.

Some difficulty I had with the way the FMC was written:

- She went from not knowing how to handle a blade at all to throwing it with insane accuracy at a insane distance MULTIPLE TIMES in the span of half a week?

- She suddenly became a blade-expert and borderline martial artist without the book explaining how she could know all of that?

- Yes, she is draken but I think by the way she still had injuries from her slave owner it was clear her healing abilities where dormant. So how is she still alive after they way she has been choked, thrown, and basically used as a jumping rope by these otherworldly, insanely powerful creatures?

- Also, she laid on the mountains with broken bones and open wounds for HOURS, bleeding. Wounds don't bleed for hours, unless you have a medical condition. You know why? Bc at one point you die

Like I said, I am very conflicted here. and despite all of my ranting above I feel like the book did what it was supposed to and entertained me. It kept me hooked long enough to read it to the end and invested enough to upset me

That's why I'm giving it 3.5 Stars.

What? HAHAHA honestly, this was just one of those books where you simply accept the details and roll with it 😅

I'm not one to write reviews but for my sake (and so I can remember why I rated this a soft 3 stars), I legit kept hearing the audio:

"Grab my hand. Grab my hand. Now we wait. We wait for that—NOW! NOW! NOW WE GO! KEEP HOLDING MY HAND! KEEP HOLDING MY HAND! KEEP MOVING! KEEP YA FEET—WHYS YOUR HAND SLIPPING?"

I'm not even buggered by how much I was actually intrigued by this world lol 🤞🏼 curious to see where this goes.

Horrible, can’t even pick up the series after this one book. It’s crazy how the author managed to leave me disappointed considering I had no expectations for this book series whatsoever. I really wanted to like it and found myself making excuses for the poor writing, plot, world building, character building and grammar mistakes.

I’ve read Wattpad books with better writing. Hell I think my 5 year old niece could have done a better job writing this book. Nothing made sense. It felt like an unfinished script written for a movie or a series but not a book. Or like several people were writing a different chapter without reading the prior one. It lacked depth and credibility.

What frustrated me the most was the fmc. She made zero sense whatsoever. Her actions didn’t have any correlation with the little personality pre-established. In one chapter she goes on about how she has ptsd from being around and consoling women who are constantly raped to breed new children. She talks about how scared she was to become one of them. She even has nightmares. And then later on in the books the author seems to have forgotten that she wrote that. Because she then in other chapters is sa’d but seems to think she’s in control, even though there is no consent??
And has no normal reactions to sa like the ones the women had at the brothel. She seems to think she’s in a different situation even when she’s sa’d several times by the same male. And assaulted by others. There’s hardly any logic in this so called book. I was literally in shock and having a wtf-moment every other chapter.

The characters also seem to switch from a formal, sort of shakespearian speech to normal 21st century speech. Which is extremely annoying as a reader to try and read through. I mean choose one speech form and stick to it! Please! The foreshadowing is horrible. Author is basically serving us what’s gonna happen later on a silver platter. So when it comes you’re bored with it already. Everything is super rushed, so we don’t get any relationships established there is no time to sit and take in anything.

This is horrible. Please do better! This is a good draft but it can’t yet be called a book.

Well, I don't blame my dislike for this one on it being a Why Choose. I blame it on a King/leader who is childish, cruel, and doesn't respect boundaries.

I loved two of the men Wren was falling for, but Benedict was a total ass and I don't care enough to continue seeing him redeemed.

I come to a conclusion I have come to again and again.. why was she getting hot for him? is it ONLY the matebond? That is not enough.

I can tell by reviews I'm not the only one who thinks so.

At least it was free.

DNF November 2023

I knew going into this that it was rated low but I wanted to give it a shot anyway because I was interested in the premise. Unfortunately there were a few things that lead me to DNF'ing it.

The plot wasn't strong but I was actually interested in it, I think what really made me put this down was the romance. It didn't feel very flushed out and was a little sudden at times. I also personally did not enjoy the smut. The male love interest storms into the room, pushes inside her and finishes in the span of one paragraph with very little detail. Not really my thing when it comes to sex scenes (give me the deets and pages upon pages of smut!).

I also didn't love his personality. Calling her a breeding cow when she came from a place people were forced to 'breed' in is a bit gross Benedict! At least I liked the other two, but I still couldn't push through it.

It has potential though so I hope the author keeps writing and improves over time.

~

I'd also like to point out below for CW's a lot of these at the start of the book felt really eerie and gross, not only because forcing someone to get pregnant and taking the child away isn't horrible enough, but this is a real thing that happened to slaves in our history.

Black women were raped and forced to give birth to children that were then made into slaves. I'm not going to get mad at the author for using a similar premise but I found myself uncomfortable due to the parallels of this and how similar some of these ideas were to our own past.

Maybe this was intentional, maybe it wasn't, but I wanted to point it out because it's written in a romance book as a way to show how bad our protagonist has it at the start (despite never actually being used for that purpose) and I feel like it's important to note the real women went through this in the past.

~

CW's below up until where I DNF'd, may contain spoilers:

Rape, forced pregnancy, miscarriage (mentioned, not on page), slavery, beatings, sexual assault and attempts of sexual assault.

I am very confused.

I picked this up for SYK day and when I saw posts about it on TikTok, I was intrigued. Now I’m just confused because this book is NOTHING like what the author put in her videos. This isn’t romantic, and it isn’t cute or light-hearted AT ALL.

I liked the premise and thought the plot was intriguing. Wren was a compelling character and I liked watching her learn to defend herself (even if it happened way too quickly). But girl….romance where?! I’m throughly confused how this is classified as a romance and not a horror. I wouldn’t even call this RH because literally only one guy was nice to her, and he still broke her arm and ribs lmao. The big “reveal” was too obvious, and I was super annoyed that the others kept it a secret from her,l for no reason, like just tell her???

The more I read, the more frustrated I got. I’m sure there is an audience out there for this book, but it’s not me 🤷‍♀️
