At the behest of his brother John, Keith Conway returns home to New England after a long absence. Their mother's health is in decline, and she may not have much time left. A cryptic message from her leaves them wondering if their grandfather's death decades ago was in fact a freak accident, or if there may have been foul play. Though John puts up with Keith's attempt to discover the truth, he ultimately sours on it. Keith presses on, all the time unsure if he's helping or hurting his family. He wonders as well if the truth is as sinister as it seems, and whether it might be best for all involved to leave it buried...
I would never have thought that 70 pages would be enough to develop a mystery, maintain dramatic tension and then come to a satisfying resolution. But John Casey and Doug Campbell do just that in their book THE BARN. The book hooked me early on with the question of how Keith's grandfather really died in that barn. Was it truly an accident or was something more nefarious being hidden? And if something was being hidden, who was hiding it and why was it hidden? Keith's brother John just wants to drop it all and put the painful event behind them, and Keith thinks maybe he should. But things keep happening to revive the uncertainty in Keith's mind. If you are like me, you will want to keep reading to find the answers!
Just dropping a quick note for those interested in The Barn--this is a novella. Novellas are usually around 70-100 pages in length. Doug and I are currently working on a second novella that will be a sequel to The Barn. Our plan is, sometime after the release of the sequel, to combine the two into a novel. It's a...novel idea... ;)
