فدریکو توتزی از آن دست نویسندگانی است که امروزه به اهمیت و اعتبارش پی برده اند و نامش به همراه لوییجی پیراندو ازووودر شمار نویسندگانی قرار دارد که از بنیان گذاران رمان مدرن در ایتالیا محسوب میشوند. رمان خود خواهان از آخرین آثار توتزی است. داریو گاوینای، قهرمان رمان‌گویی تداومی از حالت‌های ذهنی و روانی لئوپولدو گرادی، قهرمان رمان خاطرات یک کارمند است. شخصیت در وضعیتی از اضطراب روانی به‌سر می‌برد که در نتیجه‌ی ناتوانی وی در گسترش روابطی مناسب با دیگران حاصل شده است. این عدم ارتباط و درک‌ناپذیری به رابطه‌ی عاشقانه‌ی او نیز کشیده می‌شود. رمان نوعی کاوش روان کاوانه در ذهن شخصیت ها است کاوش در منطقه تاریکی که روان نام دارد

About the author

Federigo Tozzi was the son of an innkeeper. He first worked as a railway official, then took over running his father's inn. In 1911 he published his first book of poetry. In 1913 he began to work on his first novel, Con gli occhi chiusi ("With closed eyes"), a highly autobiographical text. In this year, he also founded the magazine La Torre. Tozzi then became a journalist in Rome. Through his literary activity, he caught the attention of the writer Luigi Pirandello, who subsequently supported him. Tozzi died 1920 in Rome of influenza and pneumonia.

Dario, ennesimo esempio dell'inetto di cui Tozzi parla in quasi tutti i suoi romanzi, sfaccendato e inconcludente tenta di trovar a Roma l'opportunità di far fortuna in campo artistico-musicale. Si tratterà solo dell'ennesimo progetto mai concluso e anche l'amore lì nato con la giovane Albertina non promette d'aver sorte migliore. Egoisti i protagonisti che pensano unicamente a sé senza rivolger alcuna attenzione al contesto circostante, ma credo non sia sbagliato ritenerli "egoisti" anche come spiriti interamente compresi in se stessi, sedotti dai propri sogni di gloria, benessere e ricchezza e insofferenti verso un mondo di cui stentano a comprender le dinamiche valoriali o morali.
