"You don't have to keep trying to be perfect all the time, you know?"

What a satisfying and heartfelt conclusion!

Our Not-So-Sweet Boys have all had fantastic and wonderful growth as the series has gone on, so it would only make sense that Midori would also have some growth too in this final volume!

I have admired her throughout this entire series because she is so strong-willed and optimistic and hopeful. However, in this volume, we see her very vulnerable and it made her all the more moving of a heroine. I'm not sure if I thought "Can I relate to Midori?" as I was reading this series because I think I admired her more than anything, but definitely with this volume I was able to relate to some of her struggles. It was very beautiful to see her find healing and how Rei was there for her to encourage her. My heart was definitely feeling all the warm fuzzies!

I am SO thankful that the bonus chapter was not extremely heartbreaking as it was at the end of That Wolf-Boy is Mine! Goodness, that bonus story sort of wrecked me, and when I saw this one might have the potential to do the same I ALMOST didn't read it. LOL! I was like, "the ending is so sweet and ends on a hopeful note, so I don't want to lose this feeling to sadness!" LOL! While it did have some sadness, it was not devastating. Yes, it was heartbreaking, but it ended on a hopeful note as well as a continued strong feeling of love and enjoyment for this series.

I am quite bummed that this series is over! I really really enjoyed myself when reading and feel all these characters are special! Definitely recommend it if you enjoy a clean, slowburn romance with great character growth and a story that has strong themes of family and reconciliation!

I’m sad that it’s over. I would have happily read many more volumes.
Although the series was much too short, the conclusion was satisfying. The bond of their friendship is strong.

The bonus content was bittersweet and left a storyline unexpectedly unresolved. Still, I appreciated its inclusion.

Awww, it's the last volume. It's so bittersweet because I've really enjoyed this manga and all the characters. I would have to reread Love in Focus to be able to say which series I preferred by this author, but I absolutely adored the friendship elements in this series and how our second-lead really wasn't a typical second-lead, in the sense of him doing what he wants with our MC or ignoring her wishes. Yuki was a good guy and I really wanted to hug him after that bonus chapter. The friendships were such a major part of this series and I just loved that.
The whole series was super cute and quite clean (minimal light language) and I would recommend it for those who enjoy sweet high school stories that don't have much (if any) drama. A favorite for me, for sure. :)

Content for this volume:
Spiritual- The group goes to a shrine/temple on New Years Day, prays and receives fortunes of curses or blessings.

Negative/Language- 1 duh, 1 what the heck, 3 stupid; Mentions of Midori's dad leaving their family because of debt; Mentions of lottery tickets (which Midori's dad brings one saying it will fix all their problems, but her mom tears it up saying he needs to show real work (honest and steadily) to the kids, not a chance of luck ; A few mentions of divorces; A mention of alcohol; A mention of smoking.

An almost kiss and a kiss; Mentions of feelings, dating, and being in love; Mentions of rumors of a possible affair & a baby’s father being someone else (the husband suspects the mother of infidelity and gets the child tested).

Nanami has been unflappable for much of this story, but it turns out that there’s one thing that can ruffle her feathers. With her dad back in the picture, can she learn to lean on others while still following her heart?

The Manga Debt Dad trope exists for two reasons - one, to give the heroine (sometimes a hero, to be fair) a reason for working a job that somehow figures into the plot. Two, so they can show up at the very end for maximum drama. Since this is the final volume for Nanami and company, well, guess who’s back?

And it’s not a bad little storyline, with the family being ticked off more for how dad left than the reason why. His reason for coming back also winds up being pretty telling of precisely how spineless he can be. Still, Nanami shows the strength she’s had throughout the series when she lets him have it.

It’s nice that they don’t shy away from the trauma of a parent being so irresponsible - there’s a really understated moment in the stairwell later on where Ichijo just lets Nanami get out a lot of emotions she didn’t know she was holding in and it’s really one of my favourite scenes in this volume.

Being the final volume, literally everything and everyone gets to make a return, from the Corgi to Nanami’s job to the Goro siblings and Nanami’s brother, Kon, being wise beyond his years (a common theme of this series’ younger siblings).

Everybody’s feelings get to be aired a little
more, although the non-lead boys get theirs in the bonus chapters. Ieiri is Ieiri all the way to the end; his chapter feels like a lot of dumped information, however, which is a bit odd.

There wasn’t much left with Ichijo and Nanami’s relationship after last time and it’s nice to see them there for one another, but this feels like a total victory lap for the series. It’s a nice addition, but other than dad’s return, it’s strictly fan service. Not that a long denouement is a bad thing.

Tons of flashes to old panels come back, they cram in an aquarium visit, and a Christmas date, and a shrine visit, just in case you forgot what genre of manga you were reading.

It’s all good and the writing still has it - this has never been a poorly written book, even when it’s gone for tropier moments, so it doesn’t feel like a let-down or anything. I won’t lie and say that seeing so many traditional beats crammed in at the end did throw me a little (although Nanami has a perfect Nanami moment when it comes to Ieiri’s fortune).

So it goes. If I didn’t complain about tropes, I wouldn’t be me, but if I didn’t like them a little bit, I wouldn’t be reading this many romance manga. This is a really good example of a high school shojo and it definitely ticks all the boxes you’d want it to. If you aren’t going to iterate in the genre, then you should write a good example of the staples and this pulls that off quite well.

4 stars - it’s a little ‘shojo’s greatest hits’ at the end, but, conversely, this is a fantastic series to start with if you want to dip a toe in the genre. It has heart, it has some bite, and it does a good job telling the story it wants. A satisfying conclusion.

While the art was beautiful and the story was innocuous, I’m glad this series is over. It definitely reached its conclusion and I’m glad I can hand it over to my teen daughters and be done with it. Lol.

I think I prefer That Wolf Boy is Mine and Love in Focus out of this author’s works.

The final volume of Those Not So Sweet Boys manga!

Overall I did like the characters and the romance is sweet and gentle between Midori and Rei. But there was not a lot of depth to them either. Those Not So Sweet Boys is a pretty simple and easy slice-of-life story. I kind of wish there was a little more drama or another main female character for maybe one of the other guys, and to add more to the story or development.

If volume 7 didn't have the end bonus chapter I would have been even more disappointed. But even with that bonus chapter, the ending is anticlimactic and finishes abruptly. I kind of feel a little teased and cheated by the author. The bonus chapter goes over Ieiri's feelings for Midori almost like a tease for another volume but there isn't one...

I don't know.

I liked the series but everything felt so easy and not so challenging.

One of the volumes had a good amount of drama when Midori met Rei's grandmother and their relationship felt unsteady, then Ieiri comes out of the blue with his feelings which made me interested in the last few volumes but everything wrapped up in a nice little bow.

I was interested in learning more about Chihiro and his family and then Ieiri's family dynamics too but we got a taste and then the plot line went back to Midori and Rei.

I think the manga is still worth reading but it might be a while before I do a re-read.

3.5 stars for the finale
3.5 stars for the series as a whole

Such a cute way to wrap the manga series up!
Recommending it if you're looking for a sweet fun time with light plot twists that get resolved easily.
Overall, a cozy romance manga

This was a cute ending. There are still many things left unresolved, but it makes sense considering that they’re still in high school, so there are lots of things that change after high school that can’t change so quickly and won’t make sense to just happen either.

In one of my reviews for one of the earlier volumes (I think vol. 2 or 3), I said that I didn’t agree with who Midori chose because I thought he was boring. I still think she should have chosen Chihiro, but Rei does have more of a personality now and isn’t as boring and personalitiless as he was in the first few volumes. So I think they make a cute couple.

The bonus chapter was interesting, we learned a little bit more about Yuki and why he is the way he is.

This is my second series by this mangaka. The first was That Wolf Boy is Mine, and I liked it and thought it was cute. I don’t know if I will ever read her other series, Love in Focus. One thing I like about her series even though they aren’t my most favourite series, is that her characters don’t give up because of the second act break up, which happens too many times in romance series because of stupid misunderstandings (especially in romance novels). While her persistence did annoy me in this series (it was either in vol. 4 or 5), it’s refreshing, although it was clumsy and too straightforward.

This is the third series I finished this month and the fifth one this year. I’m going to finish Kubo Won’t Let Me Be Invisible, which I have 5 volumes left of.

The dad plot line I think was well resolved and didn’t feel like to much of a right swerve. I really love how this volume wrapped up the series. Also I love nearly every single character in this manga. even Itchijo managed to redeem himself pretty quickly by getting his act together swiftly and being there for Nanami. Also can we have a spin off where Yuki and Goshima and their romances. I would really love that.

Manga vol rating 4⭐️
Overall series rating 4.25⭐️
While this series does nothing really that new in terms of plot or shojo genre tropes. It is very well written and the characters I feel have a lot of depth and really stick to their characteristics while having the room to grow. To be honest I love all four of the main characters. Nanami has all the shojo female lead characteristics however she is not a push over and she doesn’t get messed in drama because she was unable to say no. Yuki and Goshima are fantastic friends and both deserve the world. I want a spin off with their love stories!! Ichijo the love interest is a typical dark haired sad boy but he does get over his weird ‘I’m trying to break up with my gf for no real reason because I can’t communicate’ very quickly. Because Nanami, Yuki and Goshima are not taking his crap. After that I liked him a lot more and he became a great partner.
Overall I think Yoko Nogiri has done a great job of creating a story that has all the shojo tropes but gives its characters more depth and doesn’t have unnecessarily long drawn out drama. Definitely recommend!!!

And it's over. I liked this volume overall, though it was rushed. Wrapped up most things and gave closure to most characters.

Will miss my boy Ieiri, but otherwise glad to be done with the series. It was fine. I can't say I like it or would recommend it because for the most part it was so average, but it had this something that kept me going. Ieiri and Chihiro.

It’s a nice manga. No unnecessary drama and all problems solved quickly. I like the FL: pure and honest. Strong and unlike weak or stupid FL type. The brother is MVP to me, shows his love to his sister in his own way and we can clearly see it’s a healthy feeling toward his sister. Alas, I would like to say that our ML is a bit less of development (in my opininon), my thoughts is if his friends didn’t say a word or provoke him to make him realized, he'll keep making some wrong decision. It's just the hardworkers and those who have some good development here were Chihiro and Yuki. They kinda deserve more than being a third wheel. And here I was rooting for the second and the third ML..

Wish it had 2-3 more chapters to clear about Yuki's family situation.. It’s still unclear to me what happened with his father.. Everyone got something up their sleeves except him. Rei got taken away from him, then he fell for Midori and she end up got taken by Rei. Poor guy no one is staying by his side.

But looking at different perspective, everyone will get mad that we don’t get any closure for Yuri but I think thats the point. Yuri has to move on without closure, he doesnt need a woman to make his own happiness.

the series started off SO CUTE but kinda fell off after the main couple got together, with all the drama with hte grandparents and such. after that ichijo did not seem like a real character and was so weirdly possessive and toxic (ghosting her like that??? bsfr) and it just seemed as if they wanted to tie up every loose end in the last 5 chapters. would've liked some more development for chihiro and yuki, especially with yuki's feelings towards nanami because i do feel that they were 100% not romantic, and also generally the relationship between chihiro and yuki because its a very underrated one. hot take but i don't think this manga should've been a romance at all, or at least it should've been non-canon/more slow burn if the author wanted to continue the series longer, as it just would've allowed for a deeper bond between the four without petty male pride getting in the way.

loved their friendship, particularly chihiro and nanami's!!! nanami and ichijo got boring after they got together soooo idk about that but i did like the attempts at fleshing out nanami and yuki's friendship near the end.

I appreciate how we're given hints that the future isn't guaranteed to be sunshine and rainbows 100% of the time after the story ends: Yuki's solo story after the main story's conclusion hints that not everything was resolved for every character. From the beginning, the teenaged characters' family situations let the reader know that adulthood and forming a household are subject to failure at times, due either to circumstance or event. (Midori's dad is a strong candidate for a recidivist episode that would break apart his marriage and family for good.)

The overall low-key feeling of Those Not-So-Sweet Boys made the strong emotional moments "pop," and the art is really good. This is an easy recommendation for fans of shoujo romance.

I did not realize that the series would be ending already! midori's dad coming back into the picture makes a lot more sense, but I still feel like the pacing of the last volume was off. midori/rei's reconciliation and immediately jumping into the major drama with her dad was just too much.

that being said, this volume wrapped up things pretty nicely, even if it does feel rushed. midori/rei are doing some real cute shit again, which is adorable. the stairwell and aquarium scenes, where midori leans on rei for emotional support, are probably one of the best parts of the series. we get more of chihiro this volume thankfully, which I loved. yuki is toned down as well, except there's a whole bonus chapter that was just meh to me. he's def the weakest character of the trio.

all in all - I think love in focus is still my favorite of this mangaka's works, but this was probably her second best! it didn't end quite as strongly as it started, but I enjoyed it a lot.

It was interesting to see Midori not be as perfect as she was presented and that she also had other feelings as well. To see how she dealt with her father and how she help her family become whole was brilliant and beautiful to read. The relationship between Rei and Midori was so cute and wholesome and the friendship was brilliant, light hearted and stunning. The way the story was concluded in these last three volumes was so brilliant and well done it was such an enjoyable read and it really was brilliant to see all the growth and character that the group develop take into effect. It was such a heart warming and beautiful story, it was perfect with the length and the development of the story. It was worth the read and so happy for all the characters, wish Yuki had a bit more of a happy ending.

Sweet ending.

My overall thoughts on the series as a whole:

NOT ENOUGH ROMANCE. Too much story. Yes, it’s nice to see people get through their struggles and reach a happy ending but come on! I also wanted to see more of Nanami and Rei. More of them being high school kids in love for the first time.
The drama wasn’t the worst but I did find myself skimming, looking for the romance. I felt like most of the “issues” were rushed straight to a conclusion not even a chapter or two later. It didn’t feel as fulfilling.
I did however love the art and the bond the characters had. I actually loved how positive Nanami was and how much of an impact she had on the boys. She’s a ray of sunshine, I swear!!!

I'll admit it: I read the entire series in one day, and loved it.

I did struggle to distinguish some of the characters for a few chapters (specifically Chihiro & Yuki), but the overall illustrative style was very sweet.

THE GOOD:
🐕 Overall just so adorable with good illustrations
🐕 A fun cast of characters
🐕 A nice slice-of-life romance

THE NOT-SO-GOOD:
☔ Midori was very much a Mary Sue character, which was a bit annoying
☔ Took me a minute to be able to tell apart Yuki & Chihiro
☔ I was left wanting more! The ending was good, but there were still more stories to be told (especially after the bonus Yuki chapter!)

For the final book it was just okay. It wrapped up the series well but overall story wise it was just kind of bland. I did enjoy the two little bonus chapters. I had a feeling Yuki was hiding something this whole time. Plus seeing Chihiros little siblings again even if for only 4-6 pages made my heart so happy. I honestly could probably read multiple little skits/shorts of them and never get tired of it. But I look forward to keeping my eyes open for new series to come from this author and may even pick up one of the other two series I’ve seen by them at the store.

The series is sadly over, but I wasn’t satisfied with the ending. I feel that there were so many loose threads at the end and things that were mentioned in the series that seemed interesting that were later forgotten about. I would have liked the drama to have lasted a little more for my taste but I also understand that the authors can’t always choose when their series ends.

A good conclusion to the series. Although I felt a slight bit confused while reading because it has been so long since I read volume 6...so I will definitely need to reread this sometime in the near future to remember everything. Good though, can't complain. Not the most invigorating series I've ever read but still very enjoyable to me.
