“By the Heaven Official’s Blessing, no paths are bound!”

After many days, I’ve finally reached the ending and truth be told I have no regrets. I have no regrets at all that I spent my time reading over 200 chapters. Despite its length this is one of those books that are definitely worth it. With a perfect balance of humor and action, this won’t leave you bored. The immortal story of the Ghost King and the Scrap Immortal will flourish in times ahead!

The story reaches its climax in this fifth and final installment and it is all what you expect. For a minute I almost felt as if I was watching an episode of Naruto in its final arc for his fight against Kaguya (mind you I’m a fan of Naruto and watched episode as it aired). The thrilling feeling was rushing over me. Till the end you won’t know who’s good or who’s bad. Each moment made my heart beat. Even till the end, the author makes us doubt the others. One thing I was glad for was how the issue with Feng Xin and Mu Qing was resolved. I was glad they finally became happy as a trio and when Mu Qing went as far as to repair Ruoye for Xie Lian, you could see their old dynamics back.
If I have to say it frankly I did not find Ju Wan as the main antagonist either. His story felt pitiful. Frightfully similar to that of Xie Lian but in the end the difference was in how both of them acted in the face of calamity. They both went through similar hardships and Xie Lian was pushed to his brink and at the edge of falling down the same path, but thanks to the presence of one annoying ghost spirit, he managed to break free. Let it be the small kid in bandages, Wuming, the ghost fire or Hua Cheng, he was always there to help. I can’t help but think though, sometimes my sentiments are as the same as Guoshi and Feng Xin and Mu Qing. It seems like it slightly tips towards obsession but whom are we to judge? After all it was only Hua Cheng by his side all along. Not even his parents stayed.

Now to the end. I’m thoroughly sad that I have reached the end of the novel because I’m pretty sure I won’t try to read the whole thing again (at least in the near future), it truly is too long for it. The story was surely a ride, one I enjoyed immensely. This also gives me hope that I would read the rest of MXTX for sure despite the length of all the novels. Maybe I’ll stay a while before reading Untamed but I surely want to go into her other book. It makes sense why these novels are easily adapted. Even though it’s Danmei, there are not that many moments that are mentioned outright like other Danmei novels. The romance was slow burn and almost not heavily hinted but enough to carry the story on. As I mentioned in my previous review, it really does give us a lot to think. Are these gods that are worshipped, those who have ascended to the heavens because of their merits, as good as we think they are? Are they without defect? When their stored merits run out, does it mean they fall? And become worse than us mortals? Become demons and ghosts themselves? As an Asian, I find this concept of the story the most interesting and something to ponder on.

Me encantan

As a note, I read this series in the original Chinese text which captured a lot of depth and beauty (there were so many quotes I had to save haha). I don't have enough words to describe how in love with this series I am. It has flown to the top of my favorite book/series of all times list. This is a book I'll eventually want to re-read because the writing is phenomenal (extremely detailed, which I know isn't everyone's taste but it is mine) and there are so many smaller details, events and stories in the grand scheme of the series that are interconnected which a first-time reader would miss because you don't know the significance yet. In the end, everything finally came full circle. The story is clearly told from Xie Lian's pov so it's focused on his developments and experience, but there were a lot of other awesome characters who had their own intriguing backstories as well with arcs involving them. Although I wish we can see more character development and growth in these characters, I'm not upset at all by what the author chose to do. There was only one arc (Black Water Arc) where I felt loose ends left but sometimes life is like that haha). Some themes that show up through the book is faith/religion, fate, and true peace. What makes the story so powerful for me is how complex and multifaceted most of the characters are, especially the main-protagonist, Xie Lian, and the main villain who was revealed towards the end (shocking revelation)! If I have to go into details, I can write a whole essay.

alright, this will not be a coherent and conclusive review of heaven official's blessing because all i can think is how much i absolutely adored hua cheng and xie lian both as a couple and as individuals. in moxiang tongxiu's postscript, she mentioned that "someone like hua cheng will most definitely love some like this" and it's so freaking true.

hua cheng's notorious for being the headache of the heavens because he's just ruthless and doesn't give a shit about the rules and decorum. but for xie lian, he's willing to do everything and anything to ensure that he's back with xie lian once more and that he finally has the strength to support xie lian on whatever he wants to do. what the fuck, it's making me cry. the only person he will ever listen to is the one he has waited for 800 years. like come on, this is one of the greatest love stories i've ever read and probably ever will.

for the past four books, we've lived through xie lian's life. first as a kind-hearted crown prince and then the beloved one who ascended. next came the downfall of his kingdom and him. when he's in the mortal realm trying to survive, xie lian's faith and character is consistently challenged and stomped on. but you see him rise against all the goddamn odds and become himself again. at first all i could think is how does xie lian have such a view of the world. but it's because of all the things that he had been through, all the people that he had met, and all the humiliation he had endured.

i love the both of them, especially so in this one because i finally got to see them become more intimate and open to one another. xie lian's more active in showing affection in terms of kissing to get the spiritual powers from hua cheng, and in their conversations. xie lian finds out a lot about hua cheng and probably only now that he fully understood how much hua cheng loves him. through all the bad parts of his life, hua cheng witnessed some of the worst and stuck by whenever he can. now that xie lian knows that hua cheng irrevocably loves him, it's so freaking beautiful.

there were multiple twists that i would've been extremely surprised have i not googled them in advance while i was reading the five books. not too disappointed about that because this reading experience is so unique of its own. it's been a while since i've fallen head over heels for a series. i'll be thinking about heaven official's blessing and hualian for a long, long time. it doesn't help that there are so many beautiful artworks by fans and starember. the manhua is a gift on its own. i hope there'll be physical copies to be published in the future.

next up in my agenda is to read the taiwanese editions that i've ordered. i couldn't resist the beautiful covers. gonna use this chance to brush up on my mandarin reading skills even though i already struggle with simplified chinese. lol. also, reading the other two books by this author is next too.

anyway, pardon this review that's all over the place. main point is that i love heaven official's blessing to the point of no return. i'm in love with hua cheng and xie lian's love and their tenacity throughout these insane amount of years. the exploration of the different parts of this world and seeing how people are changed by what they experienced is amazing. no one good person is always good and no one bad person is always bad. there's always a little bit of both in every single character but this is what makes me love this book a lot more than i expected.

i'll probably do an annual reread of these books. heheh.

books in the series:
1. crimson rain sought flower: ✰✰✰✰
2. the god-pleasing crown prince: ✰✰✰✰
3. no paths are bound: ✰✰✰✰
4. white-clothed calamity: ✰✰✰✰
5. heaven official’s blessing: ✰✰✰✰✰

TW: Too much tension, innocent teasing, and barely-there touches. I HATE IT. 🤣 Their sweet, innocent moments were so thrilling that I caught myself giggling too much all throughout the volume. I wanna strangle them so bad for causing me excessive heart melting and stomach fluttering moments.

Manhua Vol. 5, Ep. 54-65
This volume concluded Xie Lian's second quest, the Half Moon Pass arc. As heaven officials witnessed Pei Xue's confession and decided to take the case off his hand, their party headed back to Puqi Shrine to rest. Here, Xie Lian finally concluded San Lang's true identity (Hua Cheng, the Crimson Rain Sought Flower) and confronted him for his intentions on tagging along Xie Lian's adventures from the start.

My goodness! I can reread these parts of their conversations and stare at their faces a few more times and I'd still giggle from all the tension and second hand embarrassment.😂 Also, I'm sorry to say this but for an immortal, I sometimes think Xie Lian is too oblivious to live. 😭😂

Ending this volume was Xie Lian being summoned in the Heavenly Capital where he was questioned about his ulterior motives on Pei Xue's punishment and his involvement with a suspicious presence of a red-clothed man from the Ghost Realm.

GIGGLE FEST BEST SCENES 😅
Ep. 58: Xie Lian confirmed San Lang was indeed Hua Cheng, the Crimson Rain Sought Flower and Hua Cheng addressed him back using his moniker, The Crown Prince.😍

Couple at Puqi Shrine 1
(Xie Lian confronting Hua Cheng)
Couple at Puqi Shrine 2
(too much!)🥵

Ep. 61: Story time and Xie Lian's faint recollection of his interaction with a youngster from his past.

Young Hua Cheng
(young Hua Cheng)🥹

Ep. 62: Xie Lian sulking and calling Hua Cheng insincere. Hua Cheng swearing on his sincerity and promising he will meet Xie Lian in his original form next time.❤️

Couple at Puqi Shrine 3
(yep! cheesy but effective... *sigh)😉

Ep. 63: Hua Cheng leaving Xie Lian a gift and fixing his favorite straw hat. (awwe)🥰🥰🥰

Hua Cheng's Ashes
(for context, i read somewhere that you can turn ashes to diamonds so if you're following along, you'd understand what it means)😉

P.S. More couple frames because they're just too adorable.🤭
Chibis
Cozy
(aren't we too cozy?)😏
So close

I only just learned that this novel was originally released through almost daily posts! How crazy is that?! For that reason, there’s no way I can fairly rate something that’s had no chance for the author to edit (let alone the stickiness that is translation!)
At the end of the day, I had so much fun with this series. Honestly, it was such a needed break from real life.

crying at the end it was beautiful😭😭 i'll write a review later😭😭

edit: ok so review time!! I wish I was articulative enough to write well-thought-out and organized paragraphs but I usually just brain dump my feelings.

FIRSTLY, I recommend listening to U by Baekhyun. I KNOW I KNOW it's in Korean but the lyrics and feeling of the song really match how I feel about Hua Cheng and Xie Lian's point in their relationship.

no other book has made me feel this way holyyy shit. i was sobbing my heart out at the ending.

*spoilery bits now*

"to die in battle with you is my greatest honor" SOBBING !!!!! SOBBINGGGG

I REALLY THOUGHT WE WOULD NOT HAVE A HAPPY ENDING HOLY SHIT😭😭😭 when hua cheng said that he would be back because his beloved is still in this world... WHEN HE SAID "there is no banquet in this world that doesn't come to an end" 😭😭😭😭😭😭 I actually keyword searched my ebook for the exact quote and I just realized that Xie Lian said this to San Lang first😭😭😭 AND HERE WE HAVE HUA CHENG QUOTING IT BACK TO HIM😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 and when we have Xie Lian waiting month after month for Hua Cheng... my heart... like PLS COME BACK FAST PLS

idk what to do now. i finally get to look up fanart without fear of being spoiled !! I'm starting to read the manhua and I'm going to rewatch the donghua so I can sob at the 12th episode again

it's absolutely fucking insane how MXTX (the author) has made me sob uncontrollably throughout this book. because of that, 5/5 stars of course.

the last book was intense, exhilarating, and a trial for our characters to go through. it was action-packed from the start, never letting up and never letting the readers breathe — but we gotta go save the world, so who has the time to rest? every finalizing impact was made, all the loose ends carefully placed finally tied themselves up at the right time, until everything built up to a glorious, powerful ending crescendo that still makes my heart ache and tears well up when i think about it.

one of my tags is now-that-is-how-you-end-a-series, and it couldn't be more damn true. not only have i never been sharply disappointed or mind-numbingly bored throughout this book, but this piece of art has filled me up with so much emotion and feeling and heart that it honestly felt like my body could not handle it. the pace was perfect, the transitions were seamless, the little nods and winks to the little details were a delight to catch, and the brilliant, highly-anticipated plot points were explosive, leaving me in awe of how masterful this book is, how it's ruined me for endings forever.

this book is emotional and epic, hurting you in just a way that only a final book can. it's the final push to stake that dagger into your heart, knowing that it's the end, that it'll be painful, but you still cannot look away. there's so much i want to say, to express but i know i'll never fully be successful in transmitting my feelings to another person at the other side of the screen, so the best i can do to make them feel what i feel is to tell them to read what i've read, so they can see what i've seen, so they can experience what i've experienced, so we can laugh, cry, laugh, and cry some more together. even if it's just one person, it's worth it.

"To me, the one basking in infinite glory is you; the one fallen from grace is also you. What matters is you, and not the state of you."

to add some more detail, i will say this: i was heartbroken. if you've read it, then you know what scene it was that wrenched that god-awful sob from you, that tore your heart out, its tattered edges ruined. crying is a normal part of reading books for me because i love to fully feel what the story is trying to convey. i cry at happy and sad moments, at life-changing moments, at powerful moments.

but it's entirely different when a book makes you sob.

sometimes, there are meanings lost in translation that miss the mark, that make you feel like you should've felt something, yet didn't. sometimes, those meanings do hit the mark, but only with so much impact that it didn't deliver its full force. this book didn't just hit the mark, it fucking tore it apart, it tore me apart. and in that ruin, my heart completely shifted itself into an entirely different entity. it made sure that this series will be in my heart forever. so even though i finished and said farewell to these characters whom i love so dearly and wish only the best for, i don't miss them at all. this is a bizarre concept to me because there's always some feeling of forlornness when i complete a series, but unexpectedly, not with this one. but i figured it out. i won't miss this series at all because i'll be carrying it around with me, to different sights, to different periods of my life. whenever i'm happy, i'll come back. whenever i'm sad, i'll come back. whatever version of myself i will be, i'll be carrying this series with me for as long as i'm alive. and maybe even then some (i'm thinking 800 years).

i've thought about touching on some specific aspects of this book, like the final battle, but i think it's best if i don't. it feels like to take some aspects from those powerful scenes and mention it in this review would be disrespectful, that it's better to leave them in the book. i don't know if that feeling makes sense, but it's like taking away something you're not supposed to move or else it won't be the same after. i want to reserve my emotions in those pages and leave that bit of privacy for me, to laugh at my reactions as i read through the book, as i cried through the book, as i noted my favorite scenes and characters. if you couldn't already tell, this book was very special to me.

after wrapping up this epic tale, it thankfully doesn't give me the same feeling as other last books do — of sitting numbly and staring off into space, wondering where my life goes from there. instead, it instills a strong sense of hope and faithfulness within me, that i'll be okay no matter where i go from here and that if i ever need a place to rest and laugh, this story is just waiting for me to dive right back in again, to xie lian and hua cheng's love story.

Last time, they spent eight hundred years running towards each other.
This time, it only took an instant to fall into each other's embrace.

Hua Cheng said quietly, “Your Highness, I understand your everything.
“Your courage, your despair; your kindness, your pain; your resentment, your hate; your intelligence, your foolishness.
“If I could, I would have you use me as your stepping stone, the bridge you take apart after crossing, the corpse bones you need to trample to climb up, the sinner who deserved the butchering of a million knives. But, I know you wouldn’t allow it.”

i don't think i can ever explain how much this novel (and her other novel, mdzs) mean to me. honestly, mxtx is a genius. her characters are so beautifully made, she makes an amazing world for them to live in, she's HILARIOUS, and she makes me cry. honestly, all i ask for in a story. i'm really glad that i decided to reread this, and i'm so excited to watch the second season of the show!

this one has to be my favorite because of the way everything comes together! it is all one work though, and i do love it the whole thing for sure :) some epic battles and lots of crying (tbh mostly happy tears this time), truly a masterpiece !!

intense summary just for me:

“to me, the one basking in infinite glory is you; the one fallen from grace is also you. what matters is 'you' and not the state of you.”

after a little over a month i finally managed to finish the web novel of tiān guān cì fú / heaven official's blessing, a story that positively surprised me, without getting bored even for a moment. despite having more than 750k of words (around 795k, if you also count the extra chapters) and therefore having a rather slow pace, it's full of plot twists and new information with each chapter, which prevent anyone reading from stopping; or at least, that has been my experience.

the events narrated are described with extreme care; most of the characters — despite being deities, spirits, ghosts and more — retain aspects of their character that belonged to their ‘previous’ mortal life, which made me appreciate them even more; the world building is surprising and everything makes sense, nothing seems too ‘surreal’ (after all, tgcf is a fantasy work, but also a historical one).
the main theme is romantic love, at the end of the day it's a romance, however, being present the slow burn trope it all develops quite slowly, which i personally appreciate very much.

it's a story that also tells of loss and devotion, of firmly believing in something (or someone) and waiting for fate to complete its task, of friendship and the price of power, along with fidelity. in addition, the antagonist's actions and thoughts are extremely human, things that on the one hand make you hate him deeply, but at the same time you can easily understand his motives.

in my opinion, the bond of friendship between xiè lián, fēng xìn and mù qíng is extremely realistic: each of them has a different character and follows his own morals, discussing frequently but still helping each other in one way or another; at times one has felt betrayed by the other, there have been disagreements and strong emotions, however there has always remained trust, even if fragile in certain situations, placed in their hearts.

i loved the tireless enthusiasm of shī qiānxuán, the absolute devotion and courage of huā chéng, the character development of xiè lián, the kindness and strength of the rain master, in general the personalities of all the characters are quite interesting.

perhaps, i'm just a little disappointed because i'd have liked the themes of self-harm and abuse to be explored in a different, more introspective way, but this is purely my preference: i think this of almost all media that I have read / seen so far.

“It was the words Hua Cheng had lived by since he was a child, and eternally thereafter beyond his death.

“I am forever your most devoted believer.”

a stab to the heart (sorry xie lian) would’ve hurt less than this.

Good for them.

Sorry for my terrible english in advance.
Yes, I did read a lot of pages in such a short time, even I can't believe it. And well, I have to say certain things before I forget everything. I loved this novel with all my heart, from the secondary characters, to the protagonists, to the arcs, to the worldbuilding, to the villian, everything. I felt some parts faltered a little, they were no what I expected, but overall, the whole novel is great. Sometimes the language is repetitive, but well, I think it's probably because the lack of editing (although I understand that editing is not that simple, not mentioning this is a huge book and the considering the lenght, the task of editing sure is torture). However, you can see the commitment, effort and great planning behind TGCF. The lore is great to be honest, it's truly interesting and captivating.
Being honest, I loved it to the core. It made me laugh, it made me cry, it made me suffer, but in the end it left me with a stupid smile, it made me truly happy. The ending is very satisfying.
In my review of the first book I said that the author had improved a lot and it shows, I did not find a single plot hole, and the pacing she's maintaining flows like a river, she was much more fluid in here than with MDZS.
Anyways, I can't stop recommending it, so read it if you've got the chance.

Xie Lian and Hua Cheng make me want to believe that forever actually exists and that love knows no bounds.

T-this was good. Very good. I’m cheesy as heck and I give five stars to almost every book I read. But legit! This time I’m serious. This saga is hella good.

It drives home the point that no one is perfect. All of us have our individual pasts, regrets, and mistakes.

It also shows that little things mean a lot. One person who believes is enough.

I have no idea how to write a review for a book I loved so much. Sorry. Basta. Maganda siya, okey?

To all the gays! Add this book to your agenda! I promise you won’t have regrets! (Except maybe loosing your sleep schedule but, really, people of the internet, haven’t we all experienced that at one point?)

Favorite Quote EVER:

“The one basking in infinite glory is you; the one fallen from grace is also you. What matters is ‘you’, and not the state of you.”

Also the most #romantic thing I’ve ever read???
All couples should have this in their vows. FITE ME.

I may never recover from reading this series. What a beautiful masterpiece. I absolutely adored it, every last bit of it. Xie Lian and Hua Cheng are just amazingly complex characters this whole story, from start to finish was just amazing. The mini cases, the slowly unfolding of the major over arching plot, Xie Lian history mixing in and explaining his current personality, Hua Cheng's "I respect no one but Xie Lian" cheeky attitude, and all the fascinating and multi-faceted side characters....all wrapped up in a high quality translation? Pure perfection.
