I learned the hard way that men aren't to be trusted.
My ex sold me out for hacking the crime boss on our space station, and he made me a prisoner under 'round the clock surveillance. My only friends are an old cymech wolf unit and the AI I secretly built to help me escape.
When my SOS pings to orbiting ships are discovered, a new guard, Fintan, is assigned to live with me 24/7. And there's one more problem: Fintan's a massive, warrior-class cymech. Except, he doesn't seem to be completely under the crime boss' control.
When Fintan springs me from my prison, we're forced to work together to out-maneuver the station crime boss and get space side as fast as possible. Fintan's like no one I've ever met, and I'm falling fast.
My brain knows I can't trust when it comes to men.
My heart never seemed to learn that lesson.
Hard Drive is a steamy sci fi adventure romance for adults. This book is a standalone with a HEA in the world of Neon Renegades, so you can read it by itself or after book one.

Beautiful world-building - get ready to fall in love with Fintan and Cyn
RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 STEAM: 🔥🔥🔥
Hard Drive is the second installment of January Bell's Neon Renegade series. Cyn had given up hope to get out from Nustof's control. After the Impericorps invaded her town, she escaped to Briganed only to be indentured by the Outerspace crime boss. Now she has become a sought-out hacker, but as Nustof slowly but surely loses control, she becomes a liability.
Fintan is brought in as a Cymech guard to watch over Cyn, but he is not fully under Nustof's control, either. The two form an alliance and escape.
My favorite part about January Bell's books is her wonderful world-building. Not only does she serve an engaging story with very relatable characters, but she also creates a vibrant backdrop to each read. Hard Drive is no different. Fintan and Cyn immediately capture our attention with their chemistry, and the action and suspense keep us turning the pages. Fintan is silent, broody, and protective. He is especially considerate of Cyn's history and boundaries. And Cyn! Bell is two-for-two with strong and formidable heroines as Cyn brings fierceness and determination.
I also fell in love with the side characters, especially Tweak, Cyn's quirky AI, and Bear.
This can be read as a standalone. Bell does a great job of providing context to Book 1 references. But readers would be remiss to get the full experience if they don't start from the beginning.
** I am voluntarily reviewing an advance copy of this book. Thank you to January Bell for providing an ARC. **
While early and very few books in, January Bell is turning into one of my better finds of the year. This is my third book by her and each one has been top notch.
This is a SciFi romance. I’m really on a role with this genre. Cyn, our heroine is a hacker, one of the best in this universe. She’s been mentioned in the previous books and is cousin to the heroines in those books. They need her help and are determined to get it. All this lead up to this book has been told. This book opens with Cyn being held a virtual prisoner of the bad guy and at his bidding. He’s a warlord in tight control of the planet. But Cyn is nothing if she’s not smart, sharp and totally bad ass. She has a plan to escape which includes a viscous attack cyber dog she’s trained and an AI she has invented and infused with personality. But her plans change when the villain assigns a Cyborg named Fintan, to guard her at all times. She’s puzzled though when she senses he’s not under complete control and wonders how this will affect her plans.
Indeed Fintan, a Cymech is there to rescue her and bring her to her cousins. We know what a Cymech is from the previous books. A heck of an adventure follows and during this they fall in love, raising the need for success.
Cyn. O wow is she an amazingly great heroine. Totally badass, she is the definition of a strong, powerful yet vulnerable heroine. If asked to pick my favourite heroine of the year, she is number one.
And Fintan is a hero equal to her. He’s escaped the military group he worked for and is now working to defeat them. He was previously almost a robot so is very unsure of his growing relationship with Cyn. He can’t imagine she could have any warm feelings for him considering what he was and what he did in his previous life. We met him in previous books but didn’t get to know him.
This is an excellent book and a great representative of this genre if you haven’t read SciFi romance. While I think it could be read as a standalone, it would read better and richer I think if you read the previous books in the series. I give a well deserved recommendation and thumbs up. It’s available on KU.
A former cymech warrior class, Fintan is a cyborg who has escaped the control of Impericorps, and has gone undercover to try and help Cyn, a human hacker, escape from where she is being held captive.
Betrayed by a former boyfriend, Cyn is being held by Nusthof, a crime lord who controls one of the space stations on the outer rim. With the help of Fintan and her cymech war wolf Bear, Cyn is more than ready to fight for her freedom.
This is the third story set in the Neon Renegades world, the first being a freebie novella on the author’s website, and it is important to read both of those books first. The novella introduces Fintan, the first book in the series explains why he is looking to help Cyn, and since there is also an overarching story going on, it makes more sense when read in order.
Like the other two stories in the series, this one is fast paced, action packed, and full of all sorts of sci-fi stuff; space travel, futuristic setting, futuristic technology, and a scene stealing AI with attitude! Of course there is also romance, and even though it is part of a series, it is a standalone romance- with an HEA.
A thoroughly entertaining space-themed sci-fi romance, recommended for fans of the genre.
Wow, I loved this story! Cyn is an awesome hacker with great skills. But her former boyfriend betrayed her for a few credits and she has been held captive by crime lord Nusthof for the past 5 years. For company, she has her AI and a cymech war wolf named Bear who was supposed to “guard” her. When she finds out Nustof is preparing to auction her off, she knows it’s time to get out of there!
Fintan is a cymech warrior class cyborg assumed to be under the control of Impericorps, but he instead has free will. He is determined to help Cyn escape if he can. Will she trust him, especially after being betrayed by her ex? Will they find a ship to get them away while the station is under lockdown? Completely depending on each other to survive, will the two of them begin to fall in love?
The story line is intriguing and will pull the reader in. The characters are amazing, strong, determined, and loyal. Combined with the action, danger, and humor, this book is difficult to walk away from! Grab your copy and enjoy!
This was an enjoyable space opera romance. There was plenty of action, danger, and political intrigue to keep the book interesting and the stakes high. The development of the romantic relationship was natural and organic, and the characterization was nuanced. An all around enjoyable read. I recommend this novel.
I received a free copy of this book, and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Quick Keywords: kickbutt MC's, futuristic sci-fi, lovable war wolf, fighting and action, smart women, lady hacker, snarky AI, humor, warrior cymech with a weakness, awesome cast & worldbuilding, standalone, high heat, HEA, extended epilogue.
This is book 2 in the series.
Though this book stands alone (with a satisfying HEA×2 🙌), I recommend reading the series in order. Cast from the first book show up in the epilogue for this book and you'll want to know them before getting their extra HEA. (Plus the female lead in book 1 kicks some serious butt, she's a cymech). This book doesn't go to dark places.
Background: Cyn is a passionate female hacker. And like most families living near the Rim, hers was torn apart by Impericorps when she was a child. Leaving Cyn to fend for herself. Though she doesn't know how to physically fight, she's the best hacker around and kicks butt in her own way. Impericorps is a giant tech Corporation that has conquered all the known planets in the Rim through nefarious deeds. They rule with an iron fist and retaliation to anyone standing in their way. Their most notorious deed is implanting tech upgrades in a live host, such as a human or animal. These upgrades turn them into battle machines and make them fully controllable. They are called cymechs. Impericorps used them to conquer the Rim- all planets in this galaxy. Now they're attempting to expand into the Outer Rim.
Description: Cyn had been doing good, carving out a place for herself on the outer Rim city of Briganed- until she trusted the wrong person. Her boyfriend, of all people, was the one to rat her out to Nustof, the crime-lord of Briganed. She'd already hacked Nustof and gotten away with it, when said boyfriend decided to tell on her and ride off into the sunset. All for a few credits. Thus, how Cyn got caught without making any mistakes.
For the last 5 years, Cyn's been the prisoner of said crime-lord, forced to do his dispicable bidding. She is confined to one room with her secret AI Tweak and the war wolf she befriended for company. The vicious war wolf was supposed to help keep her in line but let's be honest she owns him now. Cyn's been working on an escape plan for years but there's still a few hiccups to overcome. Like the fact her AI is scared of heights and none of them can fly a ship, sigh. As a last ditch effort to escape, Cyn had her AI ping any nearby ships with a help me message. Unfortunately, Nustof caught the messages and decided to give her a guard she couldn't hack- a much feared cymech. Basically a ferocious cyborg engineered for battle, with no weaknesses to exploit or hack, and usually controlled by Impericorps. Somehow Nustof acquired one and has the control codes for it. Since Nustof runs The Black Market on Briganed it's not even surprising, anything can be had for a price here. But this is a huge problem for Cyn, there will be no escaping under his watchful eye. The cymech's name is Fintan, and only he knows the true nature of his mission.
To Cyn, who's pov we're in, there's definitely something going on with Fintan, he keeps showing signs of being off the leash and having free will. From sly smirks, to checking her out and growling. Which shouldn't be possible for a cymech, they have no free will while being under someone's control, and should act robotic. If he's not being controlled by Nustof, then he might be able to help her escape. The question is, why would he want to, and who's he really working for?
Cyn never got the luxury of asking those questions. Instead, she had to make a split second decision because that rat Nustof lied to her and tried to auction her off. So she takes a leap and hopes this man, er cymech, won't be anything like the last guy.
Fintan and Cyn join forces to escape, Nustof locks down Briganed so that no ships can leave, and a previous business associate of Cyn's offers to help them- for a fee ofcourse. Why this associate never bothered to help Cyn escape before now, weighs heavy on her but she has little choice once again. With enemies around every corner, Cyn and Fintan will have to depend on each other to survive and get off the planet. Falling for each other would be the height of stupidity, especially when they're both keeping secrets. Can a cymech with free will learn how to love? Or will this man be her ultimate downfall?
Overall: I loved the unique characters, their personalities and the way they interact with each other. The smart lady hacker. The lethal cymech who yearned for more and doubted himself. The quirky and murderous AI. And prob my favorite of all- the cute and vicious war wolf who's loyal to a fault. It's a fast paced read, with plenty of suspense and action to keep you turning the pages. There's a backdrop of romance to keep you aawwwing and rooting for the couple. The spicy scenes are evenly spaced and compliment an actual plot. The epilogue was extensive and so satisfying, seriously it's like an extra chapter of pure bliss and I dug it so much- I wish every author did this. I love this series and can't wait to see what's next from the author. I'm partial to kickbutt MC's, whether human or animal, and hope this series stays that way.
..."like she can read the broken code running through my brain."
Fintan was asked to pretend he wasn't free, hadn't evolved, was still mentally caged by Impericorps at the end of the previous book, and go undercover to get Cyn off the space station she's trapped on.
Cyn doesn't know who she can trust, perhaps in part because of past betrayals. What she does know is she's got to get out... and something about today feels increasingly off... leading her to fear she's running out of time.
This done in one Kindle Unlimited quick read has fun characters on a journey to freedom. I adored Tweak and Bear, and loved the ongoing theme of good people doing what they had to in order to survive, striving to remain good people even in bad situations, and taking on the guilt for things bad people forced them to do.
Loved the characters. Cyn and Fin are well matched. Except for some minor questions and other minor issues I loved reading their story. Was a bit confused about the “rescue” scene. Still unsure if there was supposed to be one or set up. (In that latter case why bother when they could have stormed the place they were training?) And what happened to the awesome IA? Should have added something with her to the epilogues. As well as updates on the war.
Enjoyed this revisit to the world set up in book 1. This story is told at a slightly different pace.. Its still a lot of fun but less with the adventure and more with the mushy gushy. The heroine is more of a sassy programmer and not so ka. Hero is a fun broody type. There's an awol ai with its own personality.. Yeah it's good. I did skim a few to get to the action scenes (in a hilarious reversal) - but this space plot is 100% where my interest is engaged! Fun, cute, romantic.
🔥 “I’ve wanted you since I set eyes on you. You taste like a dream.” ~~~ Cyn is one amazing and fiery woman! Betrayed by her ex, for years she’s been forced to work for one of the most dangerous males in the Rim - Nustof. I loved how tough, smart and resourceful she was. Even more, she’s so kind, caring, compassionate and always willing to help. And I loved that, despite being forced to live on the razor’s edge of danger, she never gave up. And she’s so feisty and so brave to stand up to everyone, even to a warrior-class Cymech! I absolutely adored her!
And there couldn’t be a more perfect male for her than Fintan! He’s huge, strong, dangerous, and fiercely protective. Even more, he's so thoughtful and patient and I absolutely loved his possessiveness and dominance. Despite everything he’s been forced to do, he’s utterly magnificent and I loved him so much!
I absolutely adored everything that happened between Cyn and Fintan. From the moment they met, their attraction was undeniable but both were hesitant to act on their feelings. Cyn was scared of her feelings because men haven’t been good to her and Fintan didn’t feel worthy of her. Nevertheless, they were a spectacular and badass team and their chemistry was fantastic. I absolutely loved Fintan’s patience and willingness to give her space despite how strongly he felt for her. And I loved that Cyn was able to see the good in him and prove to him that he’s not a broken man. And when they finally gave in to their feelings, the spice was utter perfection. Those two were an absolutely perfect match!
In addition, the worldbuilding and the storyline were fantastic. I adored Tweak - the homicidal, sarcastic and slightly psychotic AI, and Bear - the cybernetic war wolf (PUPPY!). And the epilogue was so perfect!
Overall, the story is a spectacular addition to the series. It’s filled with non-stop action, danger, twists, suspense, drama, humor, twists, blazing hot romance and phenomenal characters.
I couldn’t put it down and loved every single page of it!
Betrayed by someone she trusted, our heroine swears she will never make that mistake again. But circumstances don't always cooperate and her only chance of survival may be trusting another. Once burned, twice shy...
This is book two of the series, but it is written as a standalone. No prior reading is required to enjoy this book.
This is a science fiction romance set on a space station. The story is well written and easy to read with an intriguing setting. The characters are also well done and provide for some interesting byplay. Our heroine is smart, but in over her head. Our hero is tough and quite capable. Together they make a truly formidable team. And in the obvious chemistry between them and things are going to get interesting. Overall, this story was very enjoyable and I look forward to seeing more from this author.
Highly recommended.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout for review purposes.
Cyn, the female human lead, is captive to a crime lord because she was attempting to expose his crimes. Fintan, the male cyborg lead, is placed with her, theoretically to keep her under control, but her captor doesn’t know he has free will.
The attraction is mutual but so is the distrust, especially Cyn’s, given her history. And they need to escape before the crime lord finds them and kills or sells them…
This story is dual POV, well written, and a great addition to the series. I enjoyed the resilience of Cyn’s character and her willingness to fight for what she wanted. I appreciated Fintan’s dedication to her well-being, and the character development as both fought to overcome their pasts. I loved the epilogue, seeing a slice of their future!.

Cyn was held prisoner for hacking the crime boss on the space station. She has Bear, a cymech war dog that she hacked, for a companion. As well as Tweak, an AI she built with attitude and a fear of space. Quite the trio. But when her SOS was intercepted by the crime boss, he brought in Finton as her new guard. A cymech unit that was not fully under the crime bosses control. Finton was there to get her out and back to her cousin Cyn is sassy , super smart, and doesn't trust. Finton is powerful, smart and doesn't think Cyn would ever want him. Two souls that need to heal while undertaking a dangerous job. Lots of danger, angst, growth, love, humor and plot twist keep the pages turning. And a HEA. January's character development and world building is awesome. A great story but I'm sorry there are only two books in this series. There is so much more to explore.
Overall, I did like this book even if I found it predictable and a bit dragging at times. I had read and really loved the first of the Neon Renegades Book, which was Caro and Riker’s story. That lead to a preview of Cyn and Fintan’s book and I instantly took to their connection- Fintan’s character especially because who doesn’t love an overprotective cyborg? Cyn’s character wasn’t my favorite throughout the book, she was a bit too whiny for me but maybe that was because I loved Caro in the last book. This story had a lot going for it though with action, adventure and a part human cyborg who works to save the damsel in distress. If you like reading romance but not a big fan of SciFi this book is for you! It’s not too heavy on the sci-fi but big on the spice.

This engaging action-pack sci-fi romance story is the second in this series that was an enjoyable read. This story is about Cyn and her AI Tweak and Bear who works on a space station ran by Nustof and his gang after being ratted out by her boyfriend for hacking a Crime Boss's system and her adventures with Fintan a warrior cymech who is assigned to watch her after they discover she has been sending SOS signals. Will Cyn be able to escape with Fintan watching her every move? Then she has her chance with Fintan's help but can she trust him? I loved reading this story for the characters were likable and engaging, the storyline kept me entertained to the end in this ARC that i volunteer to read and review via Booksprout.
Hard Drive is the second book of the Neon Renegades series by January Bell.
This sci fi adventure picks up immediately after the end of book one, where Fintan, a Cymech, is sent to rescue Cyn, Caro and Lex's cousin. January Bell, once again, amazed me with her world building and all the action packed into her stories. This is a non-stop reading from the first chapter until the end of the epilogue.
Fin and Cyn learning how to love and trust was so endearing and the way that their personalities evolve and mature is really well written. Bear and Tweak were the cherry on top, they are the best sidekicks ever and I want both of them in my life.
This story has a lot of details that keep you turning the pages; great characters, a feisty heroine and capable heroes (including Bear), really bad men, and characters from previous stories to keep the suspense and action going. I'm not sure if there is going to be another book in this series, but if so, I will definitely read it too!.

I really enjoyed reading this book about Cyn and Fintan and their adventures. I love the action. Just when you think nothing more can happen to them, bam, more happens. They fight hard to be free and together. It was hard putting it down even for a few minutes once I started reading it. If you like action and lots of steamy moments, then this book is for you. I highly recommend this book.

Second book in this series, again lots of action and a real page turner. Of course there is a romance and near the end we are reconnected with characters from the first book. Again there is great world building and humour to lighten the read. Happy ending.

A well written book that I know I will read again and again. Cyn and Fintan have depth; regrets and hope. In a short period of time they have to take a leap and choose to trust each other. Twists and turns, quirky characters and humour are part of what make this book worth the time spent reading it.
I enjoyed this a lot. I love the whole gang, hacker, wolf, AI and cymech. It makes for such interesting situations. And even though it's a relatively short time the relationship didn't feel rushed. It felt natural. And the few points when I just wanted them to get over themselves and speak, they did.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Another great story in the universe of the Neon Renegades. In this story, we meet Cyn, hacker extraordinaire who is Caro's cousin. Fintan is a Cymerch who lands on Briganed to rescue her, Bear, the war wolf, and Tweak, the A.I. This is a fast-paced, action-packed, and steamy, fun read. I received an Arc from Bookfunnel and voluntarily left a review.
I really enjoyed reading this book about Cyn and Fintan and their adventures. This is an engaging action-pack sci-fi romance story and is the second in this series that was an enjoyable read. I can't wait for more from this author. I received this book as a Free copy to read and I voluntarily leave this review.
There’s quite the list of unusual main characters in this book, and when you put them all together, you’ve got loyalty, sass, brains, and brawn. These strengths will be all need as danger and action heats up once they all meet up and doesn’t seem to stop
