' Combat Orders' is a collection of military science fiction stories. Parallel -- A special forces team is given the most important mission of the war, while an astronaut volunteers for the most dangerous assignment of his career. Dear Nikki -- Humanity's war against the Zehrshyk has begun. Jeremy is a soldier on the frontlines of the interstellar war, and Nikki is an aerospace nurse in the rear hospital. Witness the war through their correspondence. Veteran -- The Human-Zehrshyk war has been over for twenty years, but for one veteran there is still blood to be shed. The Valhalla -- The only thing stopping the aliens from taking over the colony ship Valhalla is a locked-up marine and a power-hungry AI. What could go wrong?
"Combat Orders" is the latest great read discovered through my social media feeds. The four stories, set in the same fictional sandbox, include a pulse-pounding run and gun escape from a starship captured by unknown hostiles and a mind-bending tale melding "Zero Dark Thirty" and "Quantum Leap."
Those are the closing and opening stories, respectively, bracketing quieter tales about a wartime romance that's truly long distance and a grizzled vet's meditative look at a career of war in the stars.
I've had this one in my TBR pile for a while now, and I'm pretty mad at myself for taking so long to read it. This is top tier military fiction. The author did an amazing job with the characters and an even better job with the action sequences. You often hear something referred to as pulse pounding, but I doubt they actually live up to the moniker the way this one does. There are several stories in this, and it's hard to say which one is my favorite. They're all just that good.
I'd like to see this on the screen. I think it would be amazing. The content would definitely translate. I'm anxious to see what this author will come up with next. He's a rockstar. Great book!
I have never really considered myself a Sci-Fi guy, but this book won me over! A great collection of short stories set again the backdrop of future wars. The author does an excellent job of building suspense right along with the worlds he's building simultaneously. If you like sci-fi and you like military thrillers, you should check this book out!
