Sins #8

Fall of a Kingdom

Rate this book
Mercy is a word spoken by the weak.

My soul is blighted with sin.

My hands are stained with blood.

But I have no remorse for what I’ve done.

I have cheated, lied, and killed to protect those I love.

I have blasphemed and profaned.

Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned.

And I would do it all over again.

**slight spoiler warning**
I feel love and hate with this book. I love the series and being able to continue with Barrett and Flynn. However I hate what they did to poor Barrett after everything they've gone thru she deserved some happiness and then this terminal diagnosis happens. Why couldn't she just have a happy ending.

"Did our wounds ever truly heal? Or were we all destined to wear our scars, hoping to find the means to conceal them?"

Barrett and Flynn Campbell have suffered countless wounds -- emotional, physical, and mental. Those who have read the entire SINS series will need both hands and both feet to count the number of sins they've committed. While the pair and their associates have always walked in the world of the morally gray, Barrett's experience in this book makes the reader wonder from the start if her past has finally caught up to her.

"In the grand scheme of the cosmic universe, we're just pieces being maneuvered until we no longer have any use."

Barrett was a pawn of Igor Dolinsky. She made her choices in how to deal with him, and now she appears to be suffering the consequences, as his ghost haunts her day and night. Her doting husband Flynn and their close circle of chosen family have noticed a change in Barrett, but until something unexpected happens, even she can't truly pinpoint what's going on with her, instead blaming it on her guilty conscience.

"Life is either a series of emotional pitfalls or actual catastrophic events."

Like all other books in this series, Fall of a Kingdom is not lacking in action or catastrophe. At one point while reading, I asked myself "what else?" This was heightened by the author's use of multiple points of view; this book is not written in the traditional dual POV we typically see in romance, and Slate's employment of this heightens the tension, as well as makes it clear early on that this is the finale of this series.

While I didn't want this series to end, I was so happy to see that what I love about it was so present in this final installment: Barrett is a strong, steadfast woman who is her man's equal, Flynn is a doting husband and father who also somehow manages both a hotel and criminal empire, and their chosen family surrounding them (Ash, Duncan, Sasha, Quinn, and Ramsey) round out a cast of likeable but formidable characters. The multifaceted relationships built between these characters make for fantastically plotted minor conflicts and a lot of tension that drive the book forward, so much so that I very quickly found myself at an ending I wasn't prepared for.

I know this isn't the last of this "world," as Emma has promised a book for Ramsey, but I am sad to see that Flynn and Barrett have retired from being protagonists in Emma's work!

When this story started to be released as a serial in Slate’s newsletter I was hooked, those emails which contained the next chapter were something I always looked forward to. They then ended on what seemed like the mother of all cliffhangers and I was desperate for this book to be published. It’s taken a while for me to read this so I’m cursing myself slightly but the actual wait from newsletter serial to book was worth it.

Flynn and Barrett have been through so much in this series and you’d think the conclusion to their story might give them a break but that isn’t the case. They’re fighting their toughest battle yet. After all they have been through these two are the ultimate power couple, they work best when they work together, but there are cracks in their relationship that are burrowing deeper, and Flynn and Barrett are not who they once were.

This book covers their last battle before a well-deserved end to the trials and tribulations life has thrown at them and restores not only the solid foundation of their relationship but the shared connection, they’ve had from their first meeting. Slate really showcases the qualities of her characters that we’ve come to love throughout this series and that doesn’t just apply to our main couple as there are plenty of appearances from other characters and some chapters from their perspectives too. I did enjoy this book and thought that is has really given Flynn and Barrett the send-off they deserve.

Favourite quote:
“I’d killed men and used my feminine wiles on others to get what I needed. I was cunning and ruthless when necessary, and completely immune to the emotions or manipulation of men. Except the ones I’d birthed, and the one I’d married.”

What a way to go out! An amazing finale to a captivating series. Emma has created quite the world that manages to drag you back in each and every time a book is released. I am so sad that the series is over and that Flynn and Barrett are retired from the all the crazy but we will still get glimpses into the SINS world with future world for Ramsey, Etc. this book gave us everything we needed to see what our favorite characters are up to, while providing an emotional roller coaster of twists and turns. We get POVs from numerous characters which only seems to heighten the tension and information overload you experience between all the action, angst, worry, love and every other emotion coursing through the story. This book provides quite the book hangover that I’m sure will still be felt by the time we finally get Ramseys book. This author has once again proven she will always be a go-to of mine!

First off i want to say i very sad to say goodbye to barrett and flynn. however, i believe this book was one of if not the best of the series to me. While it was hard saying bye it was so good to see everyone. Barett has been through so much that when it was revealed what was wrong with her I was shocked in the beginning all i could think was is it really gonna end this way? i dont wanna say too much for the people who havent read it yet but it was refreshing, scary and beautiful all at the same time. emma you write so well that sometimes i get lost in the pages. for this read bring tissues you will need them. P.S. ramsey's book cant come soon enough :)

Excellent story

This is an excellent series and I've loved all of the characters and their stories. Barrett and Flynn are perfect for each other and as a couple they have endured so much. Now comes the ultimate test. Barrett has a brain tumor and the prognosis is devastating. Surgery, chemo and radiation may prolong her life but there's no guarantee of the outcome. She decides she's not going to take the treatment and will live her life as normal as possible until the end. Trouble is she hasn't told Flynn about the tumor or her decision. It's an intense story and well worth reading.

Fall of a Kingdom is the final book of the Sins series and wow was it absolutely amazing. Barrett and Flynn have been married for many years and live a crazy busy life in the grey area of the law. Although none of them feel like they are good people they are an amazing family with many great characters in this book. There is so much happening and you are breathless as you read and the epilogues at the end give you a sense of satisfaction and closure. This is an epic finale of a series that has so many loyal followers. Emma Slate you did it again!

I'm so sad that this series is ending but what a way to go out! I've loved Barret and Flynn from the beginning and I hope we get glimpses of them in future books or maybe even a next gen series featuring the Campbell clones....
I will tell you that my heart broke and came back together about a million times while reading this. I tried to do it slowly because I knew this was the last but as with every other Emma Slate masterpiece it just wasn't working out that way. Absolutely worth working in zombie mode.

The finale!

Emma Slate- I am NOT a crier, but I bawled like a baby. I wish the last chapter would’ve fast forwarded more to the future but I’m going to stick with what I wanted to happen. I don’t know if it’s because I have a little boy of my own, but the love you portrayed, o-m-g it hit the nail on the head. Throughout the entire book, I was trying to guess what happens next. You exceeded my expectations PLUS. Hands down I absolutely love this entire series. (And yes- I read every one of them in 3 days!)

Feels! All the feels!

You will feel every emotion possible, and you may feel some you haven't felt before. It is an amazing conclusion to the SINS saga. We get a solid ending for everyone, though getting there is like fighting a dragon.

Barrett and Flynn will fight to keep their family and SINS together, but at what cost? Their marriage? Their children? Their lives? I know the answers, but you definitely need to read this book to find out!

All hail the King

I’m a huge fan of Emma Slate so when she had chapters of what was to become this book in her weekly newsletter I loved every word. This has been a satisfying conclusion to her SINS series and yet I still want more. More Barrett and Flynn, more Sasha and Quinn, ,protect Ash and Duncan. And I can’t wait to get Ramsey’s story, bring it Emma! This book earned its 5 stars and then some.

outstanding

So very very good. The plot, the characters and so much happening that I thoroughly enjoyed every minute. I laughed, cried huge flowing tears and so many “Oh! My Gosh” moments that I could not stop reading. Highly recommend the series and this book. Each addition to this series just gets better and better. I guess this could be a stand-alone story but for full enjoyment, read the series in order. Enjoy this one!

What an amazing finale to the SINS empire!!! It’s amazing how Emma has created characters that make you feel like you can be friends with them or even you could be them - but yet they run criminal enterprises. I’m sad that this series is over but thrilled because it happened. Can’t wait to continue to re-read it in it’s entirety AND get Ramsey’s story in the future!!

The last book of the SINS series shows us what our favorite characters are up to, and it could not be more perfect. This book was an emotional roller coaster with twists and turns I was not prepared for. Emma Slate ripped my heart out and put it back together again, and I loved every minute of it. Thank you for an absolutely amazing ending to a series.

I can’t believe that this is the end of the SINS world. I’m crying! I fell in love with all the characters from the very first moment I read the first SINS book.
It’s one thing after another with all these characters. There’s explosions, and fires, and car wrecks oh my! Plus more… so much more it’s going to rip your heart out.

I never cry from books

But I just cried through the last 10 chapters! I am not going to write a spoiler so I definitely think this series is a must read! I normally don't purchase books that are on Kindle Unlimited but if this series ever is released as a box set with all 8 books, I will purchase! Though for now, it will go on my reread list!

Perfect

Perfect ending to a brilliant series. I go back and reread this series everytime I get stuck on what to read or if I feel like I miss the characters. The story invites you in and it almost feels like your part of it while your reading it. The characters are amazing and so memorable

BEAUTIFUL!! A brave and brilliant way of ending this amazing series. An emotional journey of words that need to be a movie. I laughed, cried, and need a glass of wine. Levels of gut wrenching drama, angst, WTF craziness and hopeful. Cover to cover, from beginning to the very end AMAZING!! I'm obsessed with this author and her books.

I haven’t rated the last few books of the series, and I’m not sure if I will ever rate the last book of the series.… Before I started reading Fall of Kingdom, I saw a review saying that they are sad about the ending. After finishing all the books, I just have one question on my mind… Does the author hate the SINS character(s) she created?

I knew I wanted more of Flynn and Barrett and the entire gang, as they are books I reread often and this had it.

Once again, Emma has done a wonderful job bringing these much loved characters back to life for us once more to enjoy another journey and final book in the series brought all the emotions.

You won’t be disappointed.

Wow an amazing book.
I followed snippets of this book through the author newsletter and it had me hooked. Barrat and Flynn campbell are the best ever. I love these 2 especially Barrat. She is feisty and gives as good as she gets. They have been through so much in previous books.
This book is an emotional rollercoaster. It has you laughing, crying and smiling throughout. The emotional intensity in it is heart breaking and really high.I
Barrett is going through something and can't make sense of it nor understand. What is happening and why is what she keeps asking herself.
When things happen that are life threatening, barrat has to make a life altering decision. Will she make the right decision?
While barrat is dealing with her issues, Flynn is trying to discover who is attacking their business?
Will Flynn discover what Barratt is going through before she makes a decision that could change all their lives forever?
A fantastic book with my favourite couple.
I received an ARC from the author. I voluntarily read and review this book. This is my honest review.

This book was an emotional whirlwind, and I love every part of it. It was written so well to wrap up the SINS series, and I loved that there were POVs from all the main characters throughout the series. The only thing I wish is that we got to see farther into the future for these characters.
