Eden Valley #1

Raising a Demon

Rate this book
A magical new paranormal romance series from USA Today Bestselling Author Amy Cissell, author of the Eleanor Morgan novels and the Oracle Bay series.

Being a single mother has its challenges, but Evie had never imagined that “the talk” would involve Ouija boards and pentagrams.

Evelyn Addams had settled into a comfortable but unexciting life as a single mother in small-town Eden Valley. The gossip had died down and her daughter Liliana was gearing up for her tenth birthday and getting more independent by the day. She had everything she needed. A great kid, fantastic friends, and a decent job. She was forty-three, fabulous, and didn’t need a man to complete her.

But between Evie’s sudden onset accidental supernatural shoplifting and catching her daughter trying to summon a demon to grant three wishes, Evie knows that not only has she neglected some aspects of Lily’s mythological education, but that her façades of strength and normalcy aren’t as firm as she’d thought. Why else would Lily ask a demon to make her mother happy and bring back the father she never knew?

After a series of strange phenomena pop up around town, Luc, her summer fling from almost eleven years ago, walks back into their lives just in time for Lily’s tenth birthday party. Life’s about to get way more interesting than any woman in her 40s wants as Evie is forced to reevaluate everything she thought she wanted. Can she let go of the past and take another chance on the man she fell for more than a decade ago? And will she be able to accept the side effects that come with raising a demon’s daughter?

Interesting read

Would rather be reading raising an angel but it was an interesting story of what happens when you get pregnant with a demon. Maybe looking forward to reading more undecided at this moment.

This book was a fast read - sometimes too fast - and had some entertaining and interesting bits but it also left me a bit wanting. First of all, I HATE stories where someone just disappears for YEARS and then comes back - really hard for me to like that person and to reconcile their leaving and returning and being forgiven and this case was no different. Luc says he's loved her but not once in nearly 10 years does he think to try to find Evie? No, he only comes back because of a summons. It's explained what happened after he left and yet, he doesn't come back? Why not? If he hadn't been summoned would he ever have come back? I did like him later in the book , especially his interactions with Lily, but I had a real hard time letting that go and by the end it's just forgotten and apparently forgiven.

The banter between the characters was mostly entertaining and believable. I have definitely heard my own kid say similar things to what Lily said (well except talk of demon dogs) but Evie's reactions were way too level headed for some of the situations - sounds sometimes like what a textbook parent "should" say not how they'd actually react. And some of Evie's "explanations" to Lily and some of her internal dialogues just felt too long and too forced.

My biggest issue was some of the holes and questions in the plot - things mentioned, sometimes delved into but not deep enough to make any real sense. For example, it's passingly mentioned about what might make the town of Eden Lake different (why most natives don't leave for example; and when it's sort of explained it made me wonder why Evie's parents would ever leave town - again not really explained) and certainly none of the older residents seem at all surprised that there is a demon in their midst - but neither is really explained well. Then there's the lake - again, it starts to be developed then just passingly referred to as "dangerous." And then this random Brandy character - I couldn't tell if she was a badly executed red herring or something else that also didn't develop properly. And the explanations of various hells and female demons vs female half demons was interesting but not fleshed out at all (and why/how does Evie's mother know anything about any of this? Never explained). Why does Lily's grandfather wait 10 years to meet her? (This would not have been such a big question in my mind if the author hadn't brought up ANOTHER girl like Lily who was kidnapped way younger - and again, that story is just kind of dropped). And Luc is finally sat down to explain everything to Evie - do we get to read that conversation at all? Nope. Just Evie's quick summary (like who Luc's grandfather is) and then just move on again. All these questions and holes just kept distracting me.

I don't mind some questions and get that she's setting up for later books but felt there should have been more explanation on some things and less chaotic reveals to only be dropped for the next bombshell. We literally get one sentence in passing as to why Evie has this special conjuring power and then again - moved on to the next thing. I was right with Evie in being overwhelmed by all the new information being randomly dropped and, like Evie, had a hard time processing and keeping track of what was happening and why.

I also had a tough time reconciling various characters' actions and reactions to situations.
For example, Evie's parents don't blink an eye about Luc being a demon because they've "known all along." First off, her parents believe a demon is dating their daughter and never think to say anything at the time? Even to warn her? These are loving, involved - sometimes meddling parents - and this never occurs to them? Ooookay. And then it never comes up once in 10 years, especially as things lately start happening? And then Evie's reaction to this revelation doesn't ring true to me either. She doesn't seem angry enough - she's upset for all of 3 seconds and then forgets about it - but then again she has a lot of things going on. And that's what it felt like - being rushed from one situation to another, one reveal to another, not really stopping to process anything.

My favorite character was the dog. It was a great addition but shouldn't be the favorite character in a romance but I just found Luc and Evie lacking. There was physical chemistry but that was it (and I probably wouldn't have been bothered by that as much except for Evie specifically mentioning she wouldn't just fall for a guy because of his looks. Okay, so why DID she fall for him? We're never told why. It certainly wasn't anything she shared about himself.)

It was frustrating because she had some good ideas and some creative situations but I felt rushed onto the next thing and there were just too many things that felt thrown into the mix without more attention to detail. So it was a decent read for the most part but I had too many issues for me to rate it higher.

Evie Addams and her daughter, Lilianna, are living a quiet life in small-town Eden Valley. Evie is a single mother with three best friends as her support system. But things are about to get strange when Evie starts to manifest a bit of supernatural shoplifting, Lily tries to summon a demon to grant her birthday wishes, and Evie's old flame (who just happens to be a demon) turns up in town. And then there's the hellhole that suddenly opened up in town. As Lily's tenth birthday approaches, Evie is faced with trying to deal with her unusual ability, helping Lili deal with her demon heritage, and figuring out just where or even if Luc still fits in their lives.

This was a fun read. It's light and reads quickly with some interesting ideas, although some of them could use some fleshing out. The characters are likable (or unlikable) enough even if some could have used a bit more development. The romance angle was okay, but a bit forced seeming at times. There is a big aura of mystery about the town of Eden Valley and it's mysterious lake but I suppose that might feature more as the series goes on.

I don't really expect a lot of deep meaning and cleverness in a lighter paranormal romance like this, and this book fit right in with what I thought it would be. I enjoyed reading it, even if romance isn't my usual go-to genre. There are flaws, but I could overlook them while reading and they didn't take away from the story while reading. People who are looking for a light, fun, romance with paranormal overtones should enjoy it.

I received an early copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The book is entertaining and the writing is decent. There are still some typos and sentence structure that needs to be corrected but I understand that this is not the final version so hopefully when the book is available for sale these issues will have been resolved.

It was an easy read with likable characters. I am not looking for realistic in a paranormal book but considering the topic, it felt too lighthearted. Regardless of religious beliefs, it is difficult to associate hell and demons with such light reading. There was no real evil in this book and the reactions to demons on earth were too accepting. There wasn't anything truly demonic about the characters other than the stench of sulphur, wings and some magic tricks.
It is a pity that the lake was not further developed but perhaps that will come in a later book.

The one part of the story that was unrealistic to me was Evelyn's reactions to her almost ten year old daughter Lily. Parents have an array of emotions when it comes to their children, fear, anger, love, longing amongst so many others, but Evelyn always accepted her daughter's behavior with the same sentiment and reaction. To me, this particular character trait fell short.

Raising a Demon is not a bad book but for me it did not reach expectations.

I was tickled to win an early copy of this book and am happily leaving my review in thanks.

This was my first Amy Cissell book. It blew me away. I’ve heard good things...but, damn this was good. Like, it’s been a week since I finished it and I find myself reminiscing about different moments that happened in the book and cracking up or just smiling like an idiot.

The setting in Eden Falls is lovely, the friendship between Evelyn and her BFFs is life goals. Strong females supporting each other even if it comes to breaking down the gates of hell? Yes please! And the relationship between Evelyn and her 10 year old daughter was also life goals. Sarcasm, frustration and summoning aside, it was real and I am here for that kind of truth.

So the setting and characters and relationships are just perfect. Then she goes ahead and adds Luc. Like those other things aren’t enough she brings in this perfect man! Yup, we’ll call him a man for now. They have things to work through for sure, but the connection is fantastic. And there is enough mystery hiding in the shadows of Luc’s truth that I’m just dying to find out more. Don’t hesitate to read this. For the fans of PWF books this is one of the best I’ve read!

Raising a Demon is a fun paranormal book, with likable characters, an interesting plot, and wonderful writing. The writing and story are so good I had a hard time putting the book down. The author provided excellent world building, easy to imagine and get lost in as I read along. I loved the demon theme and the fact it didn't go hard core but wasn’t all fluff either.

The only real issue was with Lily’s character near the end of the story. She's a 10-year-old through most of the book. That age is impressionable, and Evie makes sure she's being raised with manners and a really decent upbringing. Sure, Lily is mouthy and such but she's correctable and Evie is firm with her. However, Lily lets the "f" word fly a couple times and no one, not even her parents, bats an eye. A simple rebuke would have appeased my shock.

This story is part of the Paranormal Women's Fiction world where the female lead is 40 or older. Evie a wonderful, strong, capable, and likeable character. She's easy to relate to and I enjoyed getting to know her. The secondary characters are written well and add enjoyment and additional layers to the story. I look forward to book 2.

I volunteered via PWF Facebook Group and I received an advanced copy for an honest review.
I have never done this before and never read a previous book by Amy Cissell but I loved the premise and description. I was not disappointed. This is a very funny, light hearted PWF book with demons and one demon child (for now- hehe). Amy build a very nice foundation for her series and did some great world building. I think some stuff needs to be fleshed out or explained but I think Amy will either do some edits or explain them as the series progresses as she has 4 books planed per the ending pages of the book. I loved all the main characters in the book especially Evie, Luc, Bev, and Viv. Overall this book kept me very entertained and laughing a lot with some serious stuff at the end. Keeping me fully engaged with everything going on is difficult and not many books get to do that anymore unfortunately. Kudos for creating such a good novel and making me laugh. I recommend this book to anyone that loves a good light funny paranormal reading book and series. It has some sexy scenes but it does not have any explicit scenes for those that like books free of them.

I received an advance copy of this book for a review.

This was a very lighthearted, easy read. If you are a fan of the TV series Supernatural and Lucifer, you will enjoy this book, because it felt like a combination of both shows combined into one story. I liked all the characters and I enjoyed the story as well. I would have liked to see the book be another 50 or so pages, so the author could have provided more details about the lake, Brandy and Luc’s background. I may be impatient, because I know the author has more books coming out, so she may get into more details in the coming books.

There is very light sexual content, but nothing explicit. Lily, the 10 year old uses the “F” word a couple of times near the end of the book. I’m not a prude by any means, but I was surprised neither her mother nor father appeared concerned, but then again, the child is a demon, so that might be the least of their worries as she gets older!

The book has piqued my interest enough that I plan to read the rest of the series to see what happens with all the little mysteries within the book that I want to know more about.

A great start to this paranormal women’s fiction series! It had everything I love about this genre… a middle-aged heroine with quirky friends ready to fight by her side, as they discover and navigate through a new, fascinating paranormal world. I enjoyed the twists about demons and hell, as the author kept the storyline light and humorous with an array of colorful side characters, keeping me engaged and entertained throughout the story. I look forward to reading more about Evie and her friends, the mysterious town of Eden Valley and the lake, as well as what becomes of her daughter, Lily and new demon family, and what other crazy paranormal events await for them.

Listened on audio: New-to-me narrator, Daniela Acitelli had a very pleasing and smooth delivery, but most of her adult female characters sounded the same, which at times got confusing when more than one was talking in dialogue. Her child voices were very lively, but the male voices seemed very drone-like. Still an enjoyable listening experience, I just had to concentrate a little more at times to follow which character was speaking.

I found this author through the PWF group on Facebook. The storyline interested me. After reading this book, the author had a slightly different take on demons versus what we always think when hearing the word demon.

I enjoyed the friendship between Evie, Viv and Bev as well as between Liliana, Shelby and Kevin. There is a deep bond that shows through the pages. Luc (Lucifer) was a bit of a surprise, as were his siblings.

One thing that caught me off guard was the swearing 10 year old Lily did without consequences from her parents any adult. I am not a prude by any means, and with the upbringing depicted in the story, it just didn’t fit.

All in all, it was an enjoyable story. I hope the next book expands a bit on the lake. Looking forward to what comes next.

I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of this book.

I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I completed this book in one evening, unable to put it down. I am aware there is still some work to be done on this book so could not give it 5 stars. Although I enjoyed the book there seemed to be a lack of explanation regarding certain scenarios. Why was there no shock, fear re the demon connection? What is going on with the lake? Evie has been told her town is unusual but what is the story behind that? What is the story behind Lily’s friend with the “strange” mother? No one questioned how and why she knew about hell hounds. There were other things I could add but I may be nitpicking. Maybe these questions will be answered in future books.

All in all this was a slightly different take on the relatively new PWF genre and does have potential.

I admit to just a tiny bit of reluctance to read this book only because I don’t like pure romance. However, I really like this author, and I took a chance. I am so very glad I did! This was an amazing book and not just a romance: it’s a novel of parenthood, friendships, and just accepting people for who they are. Add in some romance, a few odd happenings, and an overbearing grandfather, and you have a great time. It didn’t take long at all to be drawn into this book, and I had such a great time reading it, I can’t wait until I can get my hands on the next one (please, please tell me there will be a next one!!). This was a great book, and I highly recommend it! I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

Evie spent a wild summer with Luc only to find out after he left that she was pregnant. She moves into her parents' home and raises her rambunctious daughter on her own. Everything is going great right up until Lily's 10th birthday. A demon sinkhole suddenly opens in town, Evie's best friends find themselves branded, Lily's imaginary dog turns out to be Cerberus' grandchild, and Luc returns. What Evie discovers about Luc's family sends her head spinning and turns her world upside down.

This is a super cute, light, fun fantasy book with likable characters. Not only is Evie a strong female character but she's also an amazing mom.

I wanted a bit more back story on Luc. He seems like a great guy, but I felt I needed to know more about him and why he's the way he is.

As someone with a strong willed and independent daughter, I really enjoyed reading this. I mean, Evie and Liliana are absolute goals for parenting – they have a healthy, happy and cheerful relationship. Sometimes it’s more of a friendship, but when necessary, Evie is able to enforce her rules and reduce the chaos that Liliana is able to reign on the world. There’s also a whole lot of love, and even when the Evie and Liliana don’t necessarily get along, they are able to work through it and come back all that much more stronger. Plus, even if this is a paranormal romance, it’s also a love story about mother and daughter, and the lengths that a mother will go to to protect and care for her child.

Luc turning up, and back into Evie’s life is kind of intense. I love that his daughter accidentally summoned him, and that he is just as thrown and confused by the change in their lives as Evie and Liliana. Even though I would probably hold more of a grudge than Evie, I love that she just… goes along with his presence and works with it. Yet, she is also a little reluctant to let him into their lives – she might not be holding a grudge or any bitterness, but she also makes sure that if he decides to be a part of their lives, it’s going to be healthy and happy for all of them.

It wasn’t until my late twenties that I managed to find myself a Girl Squad. And Bev and Viv are absolute goals for this. I may have my girls behind me, but I love the insanity and the Ride or Die vibe that the girls give off. The trio of woman are unapologetically supportive of one another, but they also don’t hesitate to share harsh truths. I can’t wait for Bev and Viv to find their own happily ever afters. And to see how many more butt kickings they can dole out. The fact that this lead trio is all in their forties and not on the cusp of adulthood just made me love them all that much more.

Liliana’s grandfather is truly horrible and annoying. I love that, at the end of the day, both Evie and Liliana tell him exactly what he can do with his attitude. He’s definitely not a figure that has had anyone stand up to him in the past, and the fact that the two mortal women are able to do so? Priceless. Then, there’s the fact that their going toe to toe with him sets up a whole lot more story and drama to come. And, I for one, can’t wait to read more of the dramas that are going to unfold in the lives of these strong women.

Audiobook

Narrator: Has a very nice voice, but her Narration isn't the best. It mostly lacks emotions and the cadence is off.

I don't feel any real emotional connection between these characters.

The story is interesting but does lack genuine emotion, humor etc.. but it might be a bit how it's being Narrated. The story is engaging but I am not made to care about the characters

It would most definitely benefit by being dual POV. Lucifer is about as deep as a piece of paper. Evie seems angry at Lucifer all the time, they lack attraction to each other. Maybe the Author isn't good at writing the Romance part.

Also, Lucifer is pretty lame. I could him as a one night stand, but he has no charm or charisma and for a Demon, he seems fairly useless.

I received an advanced copy for my honest review!

I love the PWF genre and this had all the things I like about it. I love the strong, older female main characters, I love the strong friendships, and I love the parental interactions with their kids. I loved the mother/daughter relationship. I felt it was the best part of the book.

At first it annoyed me that the main character was being oblivious to everything supernatural going on around her. Then I started relating to her. I mean if I found out my kid was part demon, I think I would deny deny deny until I was blue in the face!

Overall a fun read!

I received the book in exchange for an honest review.
A paranormal romance with a fun list of characters. I really wanted to like them all but felt a lack of connection at first. As the story progresses I felt better about them but not the connection I really enjoy. Over all an interesting read with a unique spin on demons/devils. A little too sweet, the bad guy isn’t overtly bad but that could change. I hope because this is the first in the series, the writing and characters will grow and we get answers to the many questions this book brings up.I look forward to the next one and seeing where it takes us.

It had so much potential….but it fell flat.

Characters were very accepting of the abnormal with no explanation of why that was other than “it’s a weird town”.

People who did not need to be in this story: Brandy and Kevin’s ‘mother(?)’ (who apparently was chill with hell hounds and knew all about their dietary habits).

The last 1/3rd of the book felt like I was reading a rough draft that needed at least two more rounds of edits.

Honestly, so disappointed because the plot sounded great but the author got caught up trying so hard to set up the background for the whole series that the plot of this book became muddy and convoluted.

Rising a Demon is the first book in the Eden Valley series. First, I thoroughly enjoyed the really fast storyline, even though sometimes it moved a bit too fast. I wished in moments that it slowed down enough to dive deeper into the story and create more background or world-building. The author writes smoothly and with easy-to-follow sentence structures. Characters are well developed and relatable, though I had a strong dislike for Luc considering that he just up and left for 10 years. I found some interactions to be questionable between characters and not as believable at times. Overall, this was an engaging fast read that with a bit more work could be truly amazing.

There's too much believability-stretching in the world-building (things that people just take in stride like, "Oh, that's weird...but I guess demons are just an everyday occurrence.") combined with a ton of the female protagonist ranting & raving at her ex and foisting blame on him (for more than 80% of the book?!?) while not owning any of her own culpability in situations. And at least a quarter of the book felt like filler and could've been cleaned up quite a bit with a good editor.
The narrative writing itself is easily digestible, and the dialogue was smooth (other than Luc's stilted speech patterns), which saved it from a one star review.

I volunteered to read an advanced digital copy of Raising a Demon for an honest review...this is it!

I loved it! The characters were funny and likable. I found that it was an easy reading story and I hope to see more of these characters.
This is my first book by Amy Cissell and I really enjoyed it...in fact it was hard for me to put down. I loved the references to the shows Supernatural and Lucifer...both favourites of mine.
I would have liked more backstory to the fact why did the characters accept everything that was happening so easily. Just kind of confused me that everyone was so accepting of demons and hell mouth hole...but it is a paranormal book....

I can't wait to read the next one to find out what happens..hopefully there will be a next book in the series.

**I received this book early in exchange for a review - these thoughts are my own**

I enjoyed this book a lot. There have been many authors I like who have been writing paranormal fiction about middle aged women, rather than teenagers or mid twenties heroines and its nice to have some diversity. Also I like the touches of reality, esp as I get older and have to juggle life and my children!
The plot is fun, not too complicated but also not boring. Sexy demons and snarky wit are tropes I enjoy, so this hit well. I liked it enough that ill be keeping an eye out hopefully for a sequel!

Evie is a single mother of 10 year old, Lily. On Lily's tenth birthday, Luc, her father shows up and Evie finds out that Luc is a demon and Evie is raising a real demon child. The characters in this book are all so likeable. This book had me from the first chapter, it's a fun and easy read. This is my first book by Amy Cissell and it won't be my last. This book is a great addition to the PWF genre. I hope this book turns into a series, i'd love to hear more about this characters. I highly recommend this book for the PWF lovers.

Raising a Demon by Amy Cissell is Book 1 of the Eden Valley series. Beautifully written with well developed characters that seem so real. The world building is excellent and the storyline intriguing. There is so much going on in Eden Valley. Evie is a single mom raising her 10-year-old daughter who is a demon which Evie does not know until her ex Luc shows up with his family. There are demons, devils, princesses, and a weird lake. Loved the characters especially Evie, Viv, and Gwen. Looking forward to the next chapter in Eden Valley. Received an ARC and this is my voluntary review.

Demons, Princesses, and a Mysterious Lake

I enjoyed this story more than I expected. I thought Evie, Viv and Beverley formed a great circle of friends. Lily, Evie's daughter, is a really well developed character whom I enjoyed reading about the most. Then there is Luc who was OK. I just felt after all the time developing the women, parents, daughter, etc. there would have been just a bit more to Luc than him being the male love interest. Just my opinion. Regardless, enjoyed the book and look forward to reading the next story. Added it to my TBR pile.

I loved this book, it is entertaining and the characters are pretty awesome. Evie is a single mom, who is sent into a crazy "revelation week" from hell (pun intended) and we discover that there is a lot more that meets the eye in sleepy Eden Valley. I'm curious about the other characters and what will happen next in the series. I just found a new series to look forward to and I think if you like fantasy, urban fantasy and hotness everywhere, this book is just for you.

The story has a slow start but picks up and definitely left me wanting more! Evie and Lily are a great team, add in Viv, Bev, Shelby and Kevin and there are solid friendships that will be there no matter what. Like the start of any series, there are some things we don't know at the end of the story that you know will impact a future story, and I'm dying to find out about them. The overall story was good, I enjoyed it.

Evie has been raising her daughter, Lily, for the past 10 years as a single parent. Suddenly things start to happen, a large hole in the ground, Lily's dad showing up, a three headed dog, tatoos on her and her friends bodies, and a overly possessive grandfather all show up just as her 10th birthday rolls around. It was such a good story and I really enjoyed it. This is the first book I have read by this author but I am looking forward to reading more.

This book was fun, lighthearted and feel-good. I enjoyed being a part of Evie’s friendship circle and found myself wishing I could join their monthly brunches. The way they’d playfully teased each other was amusing.
Luc was a great character too, he came across as super sexy in my imagination given the descriptions Amy gave of him.
Just read the teaser for book 2, Devil and the Deep Blue Lake. I’m looking forward to continuing on with this story when it’s released.

Evie had a hot summer fling with Luc, who revealed he was engaged. It was an arranged marriage and then he left.
Ten years later, Evie is raising their daughter. Long story short, Luc is a demon and so Lily is half demon. She summons her dad and all hell breaks lose, literally.
It was cute and I liked that Evie had to rescue Lily. I loved the two friends. I just didn't like it enough to continue. Not a fan of demons.
