When Rosie Connors, a fourteen-year-old genius, goes to test and interview at King's Preparatory, one of the most prestigious high schools in the world, she is shocked to discover that there's an entire colony of supernatural beings deep in the mountain ranges and Sonoran Desert of Arizona.
As she obsesses over this strange, new world, Rosie learns more about the hidden society and the mysterious founder who established the community, James Kingsley. Through her thirst for knowledge and addiction to learn, Rosie's mind leads her on a dark path, and she uncovers a disturbing secret. Someone is attempting an evil, violent ritual, and targeting King's Preparatory students in the process.
Enlisting the help of her friends, Rosie opens her own investigation to stop the attacks on campus before anyone else is hurt, or worse, killed.
KING'S PREPARATORY AND THE BOOK OF BEING (97,500 words) is a young adult paranormal mystery novel rooted in the story of Rosie Connors seeking the truth of the supernatural world she now belongs to. This book will appeal to fans of Harry Potter, Divergent, and Vampire Diaries as well as to young adult readers who have enjoyed the writing styles of Maggie Stiefvater, Elise Kova, Leia Stone, and Michelle Madow.
⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 rounded up to ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This book was an interesting read and at first I didn’t know if I was going to like it. I was dragging trying to get through the first half and couldn’t connect with it, but out of nowhere the plot picked up and hand me glued making me want to know what was going to happen next!
Rosie is a young girl dealing with a lot- moving up in schools, taking college classes, working multiple jobs, and struggling with her family. Actually it's not much of a struggle with them as it is about them. The only known member doesn't even seem to want her, so she's living with her best friend whose parents have stepped in offering a type of gurdianship. No mention of grandparents or other parent. So when she's offered a place at am amazing school to further herself she even wonders if its worth taking a special item that shes told has been passed through the family. She also has to process these choices without telling her best friend a word about it.
But soon, that struggle is long forgotten when the school she was invited to turns out to be something completely different, and something even more different than what she agreed to stay with. Not to mention a certain someone was also invited and accepted.
Student's are your typical teenagers dealing with romance, academics, sports, relationships. But they're not your typical student body. In fact, most of them are not human at all.
Teachers are mysterious. Some even seem to have it out for the students, especially when attacks start happening on and around campus.
Will Rosie find what she's looking for? Will she pass? Will she find out who's behind the attacks? Will everyone she knows and cares about survice?
Let me start by saying I would call this a good middleschool and up read, similar to Harry Potter and Percey Jackson- yeah there's murder and violence in the story line, but the romance is sweet and tame (kisses (no make out scene), hand holding, concern for each other), friendships are formed and built, managing heavy themes like parental abandonment in a non toxic way.
It had me on a bit if an emotional rollercoaster trying to figure out who the main character was going to end up with, who was going after which super natural creature, who was manipulating who, and if the truth would ever come out.
I thought the writing was well done for the category, length of the book, and time frame it covered.
I really enjoyed the mixture or supernatural and non supernatural characters, how they managed school together, friendships, and how their groupings went.
I'll be recommending this to my middleschooler and my local book store friends.
And with that I'm off to hunt down the next one of the series!
This reminded me so much of Zodiac Acedemy and Harry Potter. I loved the world building and that I could really relate to the MC. The struggles she goes through dealing with so much is amazing. The character development spoke volumes to me. The plot had wonderful details but didn't drag on making the story seem slow. I don't want to go into much detail to ruin the story. But I really enjoyed both books in this series. If you enjoy fantasy then this is right up your ally. I was never a big fantasy reader until recent and this series made me enjoy it even more! I received this book as an ARC read for free and I am giving this rating freely and honestly.
I really enjoyed this book. Reminds me a lot of the Harry Potter series but it has its own special moments and her redesign is absolutely fantastic! I could not put this book down I love it and the twists and turns and the plot was a chefs kiss I never seen it coming! If you loved the show Wednesday Adam’s, fate of the winx saga, or even Harry Potter movies I’d definitely recommend picking this up! I can’t wait for the next book. This one definitely has you on the edge of your seat the whole entire time!
Absolutely loved this book ! It was an easy read that kept me wanting more . Stayed up until 2 am just to read a couple more pages lol . Loved Rosie and the growth she goes through , she’s a clever girl who is always thinking . She’s brave and strong and believes that honesty is the the best policy , that is until she’s faced with not knowing who she can trust and what secrets she has to keep from who to get to answers she looking for . Rosie is a loyal friend who will stop at nothing to protect those she cares for and even those she doesn’t know. She proves this time and again through a serious of shocking events . There is a bit of a love triangle with a surprising twist . Can’t wait to share this series with my two teenagers !
This series is a young adult, magical series with Harry Potter vibes and nostalgia that I loved! A girl is invited to try out to join a prestigious school and is put through many tests to make sure she can cut it. During the school year, a villain begins harming students and she decides to find out who it is so they can be stopped. It is very fast paced, jumping from one big event to the next with little filler story in between. It is not a confusing jump though. Sometimes it would jump weeks ahead from the last part of the story, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. I personally loved the entire storyline and would not have minded more of the smaller filler stuff in it. 😁 I saw similarities to Harry Potter, like the school "houses", forbidden place on school grounds, going into the little town. There were a lot of differences too though. It is not fully based on witches and wizards. There are werewolves, vampires, fairies, mermaids etc a lot. I highly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys young adult, magic, Harry Potter, and mystical creatures!
Absolutely loved this book and could not put it down! It gives off supernatural and Harry potter vibes. I really enjoyed Rosie As a character and how nothing will stop her from finding out who’s behind the trouble on campus especially after learning about the new world she’s been exposed to! Kind of wish I could fall into the world of this book myself and follow the mysterious events happening. 10/10
This is an incredible YA paranormal mystery. Well written, exciting, addictive and highly captivating as we venture into the world of King's Preparatory, one of the most prestigious high schools in the world. We follow Rosie on her incredible journey into the hidden world of magic and the paranormal, a world she never knew existed. It’s an intriguing read as secrets are uncovered and evil is unleashed and Rosie begins her investigation with a little help from her friends!
I loved the small love triangle that formed and the way that it really did feel like high school. The types of creatures and magic system was interesting. Rosie is an interesting character that I can’t wait to see develop more.
While this gave off HP vibes, there were also some things that felt like they were taken right out of the book. I don’t think it took away from the story though and I still enjoyed it. I’m looking forward to book 2!
No Spoilers! A solid 4 ⭐️ I read this book after reading a high fantasy as a “cool down” and honestly wasn’t expecting much. But omg was I wrong! I’d definitely recommend this book and even though it lost a star because it took me a while to get into, it definitely earned the other 4! If you’re looking for a break after a heavy read then this should be on your tbr! I want to also say thank you so much to the author for sending me an ARC copy of her two books!
A young genius receives an invitation to a secret private school. After several odd tests and challenges, Rosie is accepted to start her first year. Here she learns that magical beings are real. But not long after school begins, dangerous attacks are happening around campus. Who can she trust? Her best friend? Her new friend that seems to be interested in her? Which professors can she rely on?
If you were looking for a supernatural adventure then you have come to the right place. This book for me was exciting, adventurous, and full of mystery. In my opinion If you liked Legacies and Harry Potter you should definitely read this. I personally loved the supernatural school aspect of this story and I liked that it had more than just the basic three supernatural beings in it. All in all it was an amazing story and I hope you like it. Have an amazing Day/ night fellow readers.
I enjoyed this book, it was mellow in the sense great for young reads. It reminds me of Harry Potter. Threw different eyes. The twists and turns kept me guess and wishing I could be there to experience the school. Can’t wait for book 2.
I felt that this was a solid paranormal academia story. There was a lot of time spent explaining the basis of the school but it made a big difference in the middle and towards the end. It felt like Harry Potter meets Crave with a twist.
I loved this book so much. It very much gives Harry Potter vibes but more up to date with more supernatural creatures! I’m obsessed with how it goes into detail about the supernatural creatures. I can’t wait to see what the next book holds for Rosie and Riley!!
I really enjoyed this book. It has very strong hogwarts vibes- but the students aren't all just witches. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough! I can't wait to read book 2 🫶
Ok, I understand it’s definitely YA but it was good. Easy to read. I felt like it was giving a little Harry Potter vibes. But I enjoyed it. It was easy to follow along with the characters. I can’t wait to read more.
This book has unlocked my love for fantasy. The author did an amazing job writing this book. I really felt connected with the characters and felt like I was on the journey with all of them. It's an amazing book. I definitely recommend it.
I loved this book. It has such a nostalgic feel to it. It slightly reminded me of Harry Potter in the best ways. Even though I am in my mid 30s, this book took me back and reminded me why I loved reading when I was younger. There was so much to love about the school, and the characters. I knew not far into it that it would be a 5 star read for me. It's one highly recommended on my list and one I'm always proud to show off on my bookshelf. Do yourself a favor, get the book
3⭐️- I had the pleasure of reading an Arc of this book. Supernatural, mystery, and adventure! The first half really took me a while to get through, but it was worth it to get to the second half! Highly recommend for high school age readers who enjoy Harry Potter.
The first book in the series and it was a cute, fun read. King's preparatory felt to me like Harry Potter meets Crave. The setting is a magical, hidden school with a middle teen main character who was ignorant to the magical world prior to arriving. YA fantasy, contemporary fantasy, academia lovers should check this out.
The story follows Rosie, a brilliant young girl with a sad home situation, as she is invited to attend a new "special" school over the summer. Upon arriving, the initiates are put through challenges to gain acceptance and then split into "houses" very similar to HP. While working to find her place in this new school, Rosie gets pulled into a underlying mystery and has strange dreams.
The characters of the book include all manor of paranormals: witches, werewolves, vampires, mermaids, fairies, etc. The world building was good in my opinion and the storyline definitely held nostalgia for me. In typical teenage fashion, Rosie and her crew do not approach the teachers or adults with their concerns and instead determine to solve the mystery/save everyone on their own.
I struggled with the dialogue between the characters throughout the book. It felt very unnatural, especially for young teens, in many places but also I think much of it may have been cut out during editing to trim down the book? Either way, it caused the pacing for conversations and the storyline in general to feel a little off to me.
The plot did have good bones and the plot twists at the end were great. I did enjoy my time reading it and will continue on the with the series in hopes to continue to see the author develop but also find out more about Rosie's journey!
This was really fun, especially being set in my home state! I love the Zodiac Academy meets Harry Potter feel to this, also really enjoyed the sleuthing, and adventuring, and being a fly on the wall to all of it, not to mention these characters have all started to feel like my friends! I can’t wait to hop into book two! And will 100% be recommending this to friends and family 🖤
King’s Preparatory and the Book of Being introduces us to Rosie Connors, a fourteen-year-old genius who gets a chance to test and interview at King’s Preparatory, which is one of the most prestigious schools in the world. The thing about King’s Preparatory is that it’s very much similar to Hogwarts, but even better. Here there be all kinds of supernaturals! As Rosie delves more deeply into the history and secrets of this new world, she discovers a plot to attempt a dark and powerful ritual that requires students from the school as sacrifices.
(I read both the first book and it's sequel back to back and reviewed them at the same time) I thoroughly enjoyed both of these books. They felt very nostalgic to me and brought me back to brighter days when the creator of Harry Potter wasn’t a POS. The school is set up into houses and there’s even tournaments that make you think of Quidditch, but Alba is still able to spin her own unique tale. I read these books at the end of March/beginning of April and I’m still thinking about them and thinking about what Rosie is getting up to these days. These are typical YA fantasy novels, so if that isn’t your jam you won’t enjoy them, but for those of us who hold a little soft spot in our hearts for these types of novels that aren’t quite young adults anymore, I feel like you’ll have a fun time. I gave them both solid 4/4.
