Crown of Blood and Wings

Rate this book
She was supposed to stay hidden. He was supposed to die.

The Trials were created to dispose of the weak.

There are no allies. Only enemies competing for the same reward—receive the king's protection from the bloodthirsty Alorians and a bag filled with coins.

After twenty-two years, Caitriona Delahorian thought she was skilled at the art of hiding when it came to the draft. If the king knew she had magic in her blood, she'd be forced to enter the Trials. No purse filled with payment for her servitude. No alluring invitation blessed with security for her family. No. She'd be nothing more than a prisoner.

If she lived.

With the rebellion marching to her door, she realizes hiding is no longer an option. Stepping out of the shadows to join the fight and embrace the magic that got her parents killed, Caitriona makes a choice to risk everything for other magic wielders, herself, and to avenge her parents.

On the eve of the next draft, she is discovered by guards and shackled, tossed into the dungeon with the willing participants to await her turn in the Trials. If she passes her first test, she can move on and maybe escape. But an arrogant, stubborn, roguish, albeit extremely handsome, self-centered captain won't leave her side.

Captain Hawthorne's blade was rumored to slice through the strongest armor. Yet, it was his eyes that cut through her. There was more hiding behind his façade. But she was the queen at hiding things.

If she stays in the Trials, she is in danger of losing more than her freedom, and the king will acquire a dangerous new weapon.

M.R. Polish has been writing since she was a young girl. She would tell her stories to anyone who would listen until she discovered she could put them onto paper.

Out on the ocean is her favorite place to be and would live on a cruise ship if she could, traveling the world, but alas, adulting and responsibilities keep her grounded.

M.R. is happily married to someone who would gladly follow her onto a ship and sail away. They have four kids, who might be more adventurous jet-setters than their mother.

Another pretty cover bites the dust. This one isn’t as cringy as the previous one I threw on this shelf, but I think now that I’ve read really good stuff in the genre I have no patience for the mediocre one. If you new to it, you may like it.

Crown of Blood and Wings is the first in a new series, and while it was not the first book I bought from this author, it did end up being the first I read. It had me at vampires, but the vampires in this series are a whole other level!

Caitin is a mage in a world where magic is bad. Much like the rest of the desolate kingdom of Dacia, where thanks to the usurper king, the people are suffering. Unless of course you are the king and the "lucky" few who partake and win the king's gruesome trials. If you manage to survive you are saved from the hunger and the struggles of the rest of the kingdom, but are stuck in servitude of a cruel king. Not exactly a fate she wanted. No, Caitin dreamed of joining the resistance, The Iron Order, to help people and to remove this monster from the throne. Unfortunately, the trials were exactly where she ended up and it was a wild ride!

I loved this book! It was hard to put down. Did I see some of the twists coming a mile away? Yes. Did it take away from my experience in the slightest? Not at all, in fact I think it added to the fun. I loved the world, I loved the unique take on vampires, or as they are called here, Alorians. It is fun, sexy, and different.

Sometimes the writing got a little choppy and honestly I am not sure if it was the pacing or what, but I felt there were some parts that could have benefited from a little more. For example, we were always talking about training, training her in magic, training her to fight, but for one reason or another there was a lack of training actually happening. Whether it was her being injured or people interrupting, whatever. I would have liked to see the main character grow a little more from this, because she drives me a little crazy.

Layke though. Do you want a dark-haired, broody, over-protective, captain of the guard to save you from drowning yourself in the bathtub? Because yes please. Excuse me while I wipe the drool off my kindle, because I adore this man enough to tolerate Caitin while I wait for some growth from her. And "sweetheart"? Let me melt every time he says it, even when it's sarcastic. Love him so much.

There is a little bit of spice. Not a lot. Just a sprinkle, a dab, and boy is it good. One a scale of one to five, it's totally a one; but it was a very very good one.

I am so excited to continue this series.

Crown of Blood and Wings, the first book in the new Ash Kingdom series by M.R. Polish was absolutely fascinating! Polish is a master at creating magical new worlds full of well developed characters, intriguing plots and magical twists that pull you right into the story and never let you go—and this one is no exception!

The Trials may have been created to dispose of the weak, but they weren’t ready for the likes of Caitriona Delahorian….

In a world ruled by a usurper king and where magic is outlawed, our fearless and oh so strong heroine Caitin has a secret she keeps hidden upon fear of death. However some secrets are impossible to keep, and she soon finds herself entered into the Trials—twisted games cruelly set up by the King for his own enjoyment and evil purposes. Finding herself eventually kept as a prisoner, with no hope or prize in sight, Caitin fights for a chance at survival but fears it’s a lost cause. Until she catches the eye of Layke, the mysterious and secretive captain of the kings guard, and everything changes…

The in depth world that Polish created was utterly captivating and had a plot packed with enough action to keep you enthralled as a reader and immersed in the storyline of these incredible characters and is a definite must read for anyone that loves Arthurian fantasy type romances!

Overall if you’re a fan of slow burn, fantasy, fated mate romance stories with a unique twist on dystopian style Hunger Game type worlds then this is the one for you! While the spice is very limited, the connection between the characters more than makes up for it! And that delicious cliffhanger ending?!? Utter perfection!!! I can’t wait for the second book!

1st reading: Decent story, but somewhat clumsily written. Not enough description - as in, I have no idea what the MFC looks like (is she tall? petite? what color is her hair? is she pale? olive-skinned? what color are her eyes? is she muscular or soft? curvy or thin? I HAVE NO IDEA), or her "parents," or her friends. I have no idea what her house looked like, and very little of the countryside or any buildings, or the people in the streets, etc. While I felt the first chapter or so was well paced as I assumed it was just an opening gambit, I soon learned that the reckless speed with which things were happening is simply the haphazard way this author writes. I found myself rolling my eyes at the quick way the relationship developed between the 2 main characters (especially with the PDA), and mourned the lack of picking up on the mention of the guards in general being afraid of the Captain. I noted that editors are listed, but they didn't do a very good job - plenty of misused words, poor sentence structure, and as mentioned above, poor pacing and lack of description. Having said that, regrettably I *have* read worse.
While I find the writing amateurish, I will still read at least the next book as I find the plot interesting.

This is the first book in the Ash Kingdom series and the first book that I e read by this author. Absolutely loved the character developments and world building. Polish drew me into this world so fast. I love a good slow burn and when you add in vampires and fates mates, perfect.

Caitin is hiding her true self in a world full of a cruel king. Magic is forbidden and unfortunately her secret is out. She is forced into the Trials and if she survives, she’s none other than a prisoner of the king. Though hope emerges when she meets Layke, captain of the kings guards. Layke is very mysterious but he’s trying to help her. Will she be able to survive the trials without being even more imprisoned by the king? Will Layke continue to help her and protect her?

Such a captivating read. So many twists and turns, mystery, magic, action, slow burn, vampires, chemistry and so much more. And that cliffhanger?! Can’t wait for book 2.

I received this arc and am voluntarily leaving my honest opinion.

This was a random find on Kindle Unlimited and I enjoyed it. However, the pace is so damn blazing there is no time to develop much of anything. It was like reading The Hunger Games on fast forward, but with just a Cliff Notes’ summary of how the mechanics of this magic system and world works.

For the entire book, I thought the heroine was 18 or 19. I learned from the Goodreads summary she is 22. While her reaction to being forced to fight for her life is about how I, as an adult adult, would react (freak out and cry about it), she isn’t given much chance to really grow up. It goes too fast!

There is ACOTAR influences here (hello title format) but it’s like getting the fat-free, sugar-free version. There is such a cliffhanger it isn’t a cliffhanger—it just stops in the middle of a conversation.

I’m interested enough to read the next installment but I’m in no rush.

If I could give this book more than 5 stars I would. I absolutely love the world M.R. has thrown me into! The character development is top-notch.

Caitin is a mage in a land where that’s not a good thing. Who can you trust with your secret. After an unspeakable tragedy, she’s found and forced into the Trails to fight for her life. She’s never been trained in the art of magic or how to properly use it, so how is she supposed to call on it to save her life?

Lies are uncovered and truths long forgotten are revealed to Caitin as she discovers who and what she is.

What twists we weave

Ms polish has done it yet again. I was ready for vampires. But this version was a twist I was pleasantly surprised for.
Caitin is a strong young woman who is in hiding for fear of being entered into games for the king that no one really understands... What those games are used for is twisted and cruel. But fate has a way of catching up to most and she's no different. But Layke... The kings captain of the guard becomes more that she could have ever thought..

The cliff hangar... Yeah... I'm waiting not so patiently for book two.. Time can't pass fast enough.

You did an amazing job. Can't wait for book two... And three lol

Magic has been outlawed by the king who stole the crown. Caitin is forced to fight in the trials. Can she survived be?

This book was action packed. The author did an amazing job of creating world that was unliked other in the genre. She creates backstories and lore that can continue in future books.

Caitin wants to fight in the resistance so bad but has an aversion to killing that I think in this instance is hilarious. Layke is a mysterious dark haired love interest. Watching him try to subtly give her hints about who and what he is has me grinning. I love how she didn’t try and fight their connection and I can’t wait to see what happen next.

I could not put this book down. I read it in one sitting and then immediately downloaded the next book in the series. The world is rich and immersive. The characters are likable. The magic system is fairly unique and interesting.

Tropes:
• Fated mates
• Enemies to lovers
• Hidden Identity
• Found Power
• Forced Proximity
• Trials (similar to Hunger Games)
• Morally Grey MMC
• One Horse

Spice: 0/5. There is tension and a few kisses. That's it. I get the feeling book 2 will be spicy.

Did I mention there is a race of sexy vampire men with wings? If you loved the bat boys from ACoTAR as much as I did I know you'll enjoy sexy winged vampire men.

I received this book as an arc. I absolutely loved it! I could not put it down. The main character has a secret that if found out could mean death. She gets thrown into a hunger games style game where only the strong survive. With creatures set out to kill, she finds help comfort in an unlikely place. The male main character is full of secrets and makes you want to keep reading to figure them all out. I cannot wait for the next book! It did end on a cliffhanger so keep that in mind. But I will be recommending this book to everyone I know!

Oh my Alorian!
Do NOT pass this one up! I am LOVING this world & the extra challenges they’ve survived! The trials are a whole other ballgame, & had me freaking out all the way through. Think Hunger Games meets Salem Witch Trials with a bit more magic & romance. So many twists & unseen factors. Darkness below rearing it’s ugly head, a king determined to win at any cost. I tried to drag it out … to make it last a bit longer, but my curiosity won. I couldn’t wait any longer. And now I must wait for book 2. *sigh* #WorthTheWait #NeedMoreNow

This book was amazing! If your a fan of the From Blood and Ash series this is for you. I read the entire thing in about 5hrs total. I couldn't get enough! The MC Caitriona really comes into her own and is trying to learn about herself and her magic. Layke is just...."chef's kiss"!! The images I have if this man are phenomenal. 10/10 will read again and recommend to others.

A riveting story

I was enthralled from the beginning. An epic fantasy full of twists, turns, friendship, and mates. I read this in one day and am counting the moments until book 2. I was impressed with the storyline, and while there were areas that could have been developed more, it was written beautifully.

Great book!

What a great read!! I love this books!
Caitin has been in hiding her whole life for fear of being put in the trials. As much as she tried to remain unseen fate had a different plan for her. Layke is the kings captain. Layke is hiding secrets.
I can't wait to read the others in this series. I'm so glad I have the other 2 because the cliffhanger in 1 is unreal!

A world of trials and love

An intense battle for survival and unexpected allies. Secrets abound and the heat of attraction is on in this new world from M.R. Polish.

This books has a touch of spice to it, but no sex scenes.

I did stop reading this series because the next books are spicy.

We have wings, we have Vampires, we have magic and we have mates. What's there not to love?

I feel for Caitin but love Layke and hope he brings the best out in her. Well worth a read and bring on the rest of the series (this isn't me rushing the author though 🤣)
