Supernatural Sisters #8

Her Fierce Creatures

Rate this book
Four women. One world changed forever. It has all come down to this.

Werewolf Tommi Grayson always knew she was a weapon, she just needed the right target. Never in a million years did she expect that target to be the current leaders of the supernatural world.

Sprite Dreckly Jones has spent the entirety of her 140-years hiding in one form or another. Until now. Having seen enough wars, she should be fleeing from the action. Yet some battles are unavoidable. Some are destined.

Corvossier 'Casper' von Klitzing knew this day was coming. Or rather, the ghost of her dead brother Creeper kept telling her so. Repeatedly. The supernatural world is in outright revolt against their government, the Treize, and Casper's gift to rally the living and the dead is more vital than ever.

Banshee Sadie Burke's bravery was the catalyst for this chaos - and for the unique chance the supernatural world now has to change the balance of power forever. Witches and werewolves working together. Sprites teaming up with shifters. Demons and goblins in cahoots. The human world on the precipice of learning they're not alone. Yet Sadie's power came at a cost, three of them in fact, with the future hinging on the birth of her unborn triplets.

The four women and their collective of monsters, misanthropes and misfits have no choice but to risk everything to save everything, with their personal prejudices paling in comparison to a possibility ... the possibility of a better world for themselves and every being that comes after.

This is the thrilling conclusion to Maria Lewis' award-winning, best-selling Supernatural Sisters:

Her Fierce Creatures is the breathtaking conclusion of Maria Lewis’s award-winning Supernatural Sisters urban fantasy series.

Since my very late introduction to this series with The Rose Daughter, I’ve tracked down the earlier instalments but regrettably not had the time to read them, so I was hesitant to jump into the finale. I was relieved to find my lack of familiarity with the series overall proved not to be a hindrance, and I quickly found myself absorbed in Her Fierce Creatures.

After centuries of oppression and increasing cruelty by the Trieze, the ruling class of the supernatural that live hidden among modern society, the time has come to revolt. The balance of power hinges on the safe delivery of banshee Sadie Burke’s triplets, and the best way to protect them is to disrupt and divide the forces of the Praetorian Guard, uniting races and clans in the fight.

Supernatural emissaries from all over the world gather in the Australian dessert to plan their rebellion. Vankila, the Scottish underground prison from which sprite Dreckly Jones is the only one to have ever escaped, is a priority target and they devise a risky plan in which werewolf Tommi Grayson gets herself arrested, to stage a break out, rather than a break in.

There’s lots of fast paced, high tension action as Tommi enacts the plan with plenty of help, while groups of volunteers simultaneously attack other Trieze facilities around the world. Dreckly Jones and Corvossier ‘Casper’ von Klitzing, also play major roles in the battle. The clashes are dangerous and violent, and there are losses that will weigh heavily on them all.

Meanwhile Sadie is hidden from the Trieze in a remote New Zealand stronghold, guarded by her family and Tommi’s Māori werewolf relatives. Sadie is struggling with both the physical and emotional pressures of her pregnancy, and her anxiety grows after a vision suggests that the Trieze will come for her. Werewolf Simon is tasked as Sadie’s personal guard, and I was surprised and delighted by the heartwarming romance that developed between the two.

Her Fierce Creatures is a must read for fans of the series, those familiar with the Supernatural Sisters will appreciate the elements of closure for the characters they’ve grown to know and love, and the ending is as dramatic and climatic as could be hoped for.

An amazing fantasy book which had me hooked from the start. The last in the series.Sadie is pregnant with triplets that could be a hope for the supernatural world. And revolutions are known to be built on hope. With one of her stories here focusing on the challenges and rewards of pregnancy and childbirth, I think Lewis has something important and new to say about that experience. I think she has a great ending. Her Fierce Creatures is her last book Lewis needs in Supernatural Sisters. I highly recommend reading the previous book before stepping into this one so you aware of the characters backgrounds.

Maria Lewis' "Her Fierce Creatures" is an excellent conclusion to her long-running series - Supernatural Sisters. Bringing this story that is dear to Lewis' heart to an end, had it all and brought the four main characters' stories to rightful closure. I highly recommend the series if you are looking for some good urban fantasy to sink your teeth into.

When I read Lewis's first book in the sequence, Who's Afraid?, I was a little wary. Werewolves? But it was soon clear this wasn't your typical UF, introducing Tommi Grayson, who has a foot in both the supernatural and mundane camps. Successive stories followed Tommi's further adventures as well as introducing a succession of women who are members of different supernatural peoples - a sprite, a medium, a banshee - and their world - oppressed by an authority known as the Treize.

Now the time is coming to turn on the Treize and the stakes are suddenly higher. Her Fierce Creatures is Lewis's necessary final volume in the Supernatural Sistersbut, gosh, how difficult this must have been to write! Unlike the previous books it has too maintain the viewpoints of all four women - Tommi herself, Dreckly (the sprite), Caspet (medium) and Sadie (the banshee). While they have appeared in each other's stories before, those were generally minor, walk-on appearances and each had a full book (or more) in which to develop (my favourite of those being Dreckly in The Rose Daughter, living her life through the long 20th century, encountering all manner of prejudice and adversity and coming out on top).

Here, there is more of a team-up with the need to keep track of parallel events taking place around the world, at the same time as tying off stories, romances, rivalries and foes. That inevitably makes Her Fierce Creatures a slightly different type of story - but Lewis delivers a perfect completion to her saga, resisting any temptation to make this one endless kick-ass battle and allowing each woman some space. For me, that really pays off. These are not just characters, they are friends we've come to know, women whose stories and struggles have struck a chord, and they deserve an opportunity to reflect on that as they await the end.

And this isn't just a story of endings, it also contains new beginnings. Sadia is pregnant - VERY pregnant - with the triplets who may be the hope for the supernatural world. And revolutions are, as we know, built on hope. In making one of the story threads here focus on the challenges and rewards of pregnancy and childbirth, Lewis is still I think - even after seven books in this series - saying something important and new here about that experience. I think it a glorious way to end.

I initially gave this book a 3 star rating, but that's unfair as I messed up specularly by starting with the FINALE in a series about the supernatural. I'm leaving it unrated due to this. I'd never read any of the author's other books, and actually had no idea that there were others in this series as I picked it up from a book sale purely because of the cover. I spent a good majority of the book not knowing who the characters were although the author did a good job describing each character. I felt that each of the 4 "main" characters came with so many secondary characters that I was lost and unsure who was who, but that would have been fixed by reading the rest of the series. I found it hard to connect with the characters as I hadn't read more about them. The spicy scenes felt rushed, a werewolf character said "lol" in conversation. These were the only two things that jumped out at me. Aside from that, this book was good.

I’m emotionally never going to recover from this book. (To the point where I kept putting off finishing it cause I knew I’d be so emo!)
Absolutely stunning to a series I’ve been hooked into so fiercely for so long. I feel both joy and sadness that it all ends here, I love these characters and their world feels so lived in so much so that I wish I could stay there!
Might just have to start the whole series again 👀

So many feels in this book.
Oh so many!!!
Their stories twine together, told from the four perspectives of Sadie, Tommi, Dreckly and Casper, all of whom we have met in earlier books in the series.
It has all come down to this.
But what is “this”? What has it come down to?
You’ll need to read the book to find out!

As much as I adore all of these characters, and was super excited to have them all together wreaking havoc on the bad guys, there were just a few long term storyline’s that didn’t get enough attention.

It may be a case of too much anticipation, so I’ll have to come back for a reread in a little while and see how I feel.

Loved this.

A fitting end to the series - plenty of action and adventure alongside romantic and otherwise entanglement, hugely addictive first page to last.

All of these books are so brilliantly readable and clever that I highly recommend them all.

Her Fierce Creatures is the final book in Maria Lewis' Supernatural Sisters series. This series is one of my favorite urban fantasy series. In this book, all characters from previous books come together to rebel against Treize. It was really lovely to see them again. Especially reading Tommi's fierceness was so much fun. The plot was really good too. It was fast-paced and full of action. The fight scenes were really well written. It was very emotional to say goodbye to these characters but the ending was perfect. I highly recommend this series to anyone who loves urban fantasy. You definitely enjoy it.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in return for my honest review.

I really enjoyed this, I must admit I had not read the previous books so I was going in blind but even so, it was an engaging and well written read. I will definitely be going back to the start and reading the other books for sure!
