USA TODAY BESTSELLING AUTHOR "Seriously funny, wickedly entertaining. Davis gets me every time." - Janet Evanovich It's convention season at the Bellissimo Resort and Casino and Davis Way Cole barely notices. It's hard to pay attention when you live in a Jambalaya Junkyard. But when Special Events Coordinator Holder Darby walks off the job just as five hundred Alabama bankers pour in the front door, Davis steps up. Or would that be in? Definitely in. Davis steps in. It. Not only has the convention director vanished, but a certain Bellissimo guest is missing. One who forgot to pack the million dollars he left in the bathtub. It looks like our redhead newlywed Super Secret Spy's lazy summer is over when the Bellissimo vault is robbed. Can Davis connect the dots before it's too late? Can she get her Taser gun back from Bianca Sanders? Will she be stuck with Eddie Crawford's 1962 Cadillac forever? What Davis needs is a little faith. And a lot of luck. DOUBLE MINT. New money. I missed Davis. She can get into as many crazy situations as Stephanie Plum, but it seems a bit more real somehow. Plus she doesn't have a never-ending love triangle.
What I enjoyed: * Her new "home". I doubt the descriptions did it justice. Plus the red monstrosity refrigerator that never works. I don't know how they are able to live there. * Davis and Bradley. Even when he is mad at her, you can still tell they love each other. * Fantasy and Baylor (the partner and sidekick) *
What could have been better: * You would think everyone would know better than to dismiss Davis's theories by now, no matter how crazy they sound
I am just amazed at what a wonderful author Gretchen Archer is...she is amazing...every time I read a Davis Way novel I really feel attached to the characters I feel the pain and the laughter the embarrassment the joy all of those emotions and then some...this book has a slightly deeper dark side than the others...it shows the real life effect of the detective business...it's not all fun and games...mostly it's a lot of coffee and hacking but in this one it gets intense!!! The characters are fantastical and hilarious while remaining true to the real element of the story!!! I can't believe how the ending turned out...woah...not expecting that...and let's just say a random turn of events!!!! How will Davis Way ever pull the next adventure off???? Seriously reading this series I have never laughed so hard or so long at a book...nor have I ever enjoyed reading a mystery as much as I like Davis Way Crime Capers!!!
Ahhh....BRADLEY COLE!!!! (Now that is just one great character!!!)
Double Mint (#4) takes reins from Double Strike (#3) to tell the story of Davis Way’s mysterious/romantic/hilarious/ undercover life.
If you were Davis Way, here are a few pointers to begin with your (very chaotic) life:
1. You are on the security force of a casino, sort of a spy on the team.
2. You are not easily ruffled by theft, murder, shooting because that’s what you headbutt on a daily basis.
3. You are the spitting image of your boss’ wife (if you coat an additional heavy layer of foundation, pull on some contacts and spray-dye your hair) and that—unfortunately—makes her your boss too.
4. Your relationship with your newly-wedded husband is sheer bliss... if only you could move out from the haunted house causing a few disagreements between you two.
So now that we are settled on your character, let's brief you on your mission for this instalment. One, it's summer get some rest while you can. Two, while you are getting that rest, find out why the casino's Special Events Coordinator has quit her job and is nowhere to be found. Three—you are still supposed to be resting—take on the role as the hotel's Special Events Coordinator organising weddings with guests who can't see eye to eye and have different bands for the different set of families. Four, find out why platinum from the casino's vault has been stolen. While at that, you just stumbled on some incriminating evidence in you and your husband's new home that might lead you both to jail--get rid of it. Last but not least, break it to your boss' wife that she has menopause... and try surviving after that.
My Review.
I loved this book! You cannot go through summer without a Women Sleuths novel. In this review I'd be like a magazine recommending you go get this book to prevent excessive summer boredom (and accelerate your aging process by acquiring a few laughter lines!).──★
Gretchen Archer doesn't disappoint with another amazing storyline in her Davis Way Crime Caper series. So there's evidence of minting fake platinum coins in your favourite casino/hotel and Davis Way has to get to the bottom of this before she finds herself and a lot others behind bars, and though no one believes her prime suspect for the crime—an old woman who is known to have poor sight (really, there must be an accomplice who has good enough eyes to mint coins)—she has to find a way to convince everyone they are really on to a devious woman who knows (or sees) more than she's letting on. A star!──★★
It's not hard to love Davis Way, really. Besides being funny, and dead-good with a gun, she's your relatable lead who's not sure her maternal instincts has kicked in yet and can even take care of a cat! The Same Davis I fell in love with starting this series, the same Davis I continue to love with every instalment. A star!──★★★
One thing you'd love about series novels is to get to see old characters you got smitten with since instalment one. Bradley, the amazing fiance now turned husband now turned boss who would love it if Davis Way makes dinner more than she makes trouble. You'd love Bianca, the boss's wife who is always getting under the knife as much as she gets under Davis' skin. Fantasy, the partner who always has her shit together, her husband's and children's ... although not anymore. Eddie, Davis' ex-ex-husband who is annoying and the man no woman wants to get married to—twice! This series saw new characters such as Magnolia, the sneaky old lady with presumed poor sight who constantly busts into Davis' old home—which was her previous home—and leaves behind a trail of heavy perfume. And a cat that's so irritating readers would wonder why they love cats anyway (—not me. Hate them).──★★★★
Lots of humor in this title (although not as much as the previous instalments)! Lots of suspense and twists and so many unexpected moments. The ending has massive OMG moments that would make you gasp.──★★★★★
Another five-star read from Gretchen Archer. I'm waiting for the day when I'll fall out of love with Davis Way, but this day isn't happening so I'm giving up.
The only thing I hated about this novel should be, blink and you'd miss something. So fast-paced if you do not keep up you'd easily be Left behind. I worried for my avid-reader friend who blinks a lot and can't help it. This book was not made for Blepharospasm.
I recommend this for anyone who wants a Women Sleuth title this summer. If you want something gasp-out-loud funny, just get this book. No one wants to sit on the edge of their sun lounger, but if you want to, I recommend this!
[I received this book free from the publisher, Henery Press through NetGalley. I thank them for their generousity. In exchange, I was simply asked to write an honest review, and post it. "When you do what I do, faith is something that can slip through your fingers: faith in the system, faith in justice , faith in people. When you see enough, you give up. When you see too much, you start worrying. When you think you’ve seen it all, a point I’d reached without knowing it, you freeze your life and the lives of those closest to you. You think even the mailman is out to hurt your husband. You think your father, who taught you everything you know, can’t handle a simple bank robbery without you. You think your partner, a strong, brave, fearless woman, can’t dig out of the ditch she threw herself into. You think you can’t bring a child into this cruel broken world, because it’s safer for the child to stay a dream than become a vulnerable reality. I’d lost my faith. It was time to find it"
Davis Way Cole, newlywed, still working at the Bellisimo, now working for her husband, the newly appointed manager, while Richard Saunders, the owner, is bouncing between this casino and the new one he's opening across the state. He's left his wacky wife Bianca behind, to terrorize Davis....as if she hasn't already.....you'll know what I mean if you've read any of the other books...
Add platinum, counterfitting, bank robbers, organ transplants, the refrigerator and a cat. ( yes, a cat) to find another side splitting, what did they get themselves into yet again tale of the weirdness that goes on in the Bellissimo Casino, where there's always a ringside seat for anyone who's willing to suspend disbelief and just enjoy the ride.
The Davis Way Crime Capers are one of my all time favorite series. I'm not just a casual reader as I've read 6 books this past week. This series ALWAYS has me laughing until I have tears running down my face! Today I had a moment where I was so caught up in Davis Way Cole's Caper I caught myself laughing loudly. It wouldn't have been so bad but I wasn't sequestered in my private reading nook -- I was in a public place! Archer's writing is that GOOD!! She continues to come up with excellent storylines for the Dream Team of characters. She writes so vividly I'm beginning to feel like I might have moved into the beautiful Bellissimo Resort & Casino. Also, I'm just a little tired. Davis has had me running all over that Casino & throughout more backwoods Alabama towns in pursuit of truth, virtue and justice. More than anything, I'm exhausted thinking about having to live in the "New Orleans Haunted House" that the former Casino Manager's wife so cleverly decorated. That place was a death trap in oh so many ways. Another extraordinarily funny and entertaining book with lots of intertwining stories to keep you on your toes.
I'm a huge Davis Way (and Gretchen Archer) fan. The first book, Double Whammy, blew me away. I'm so thrilled that Archer has succeeded in creating another fantastic caper, one that slithers and snakes through the Bellissimo Casino and out into the Alabama countryside, leaving me breathless in anticipation to know WHAT IN THE HELL WILL HAPPEN TO DAVIS WAY and HOW IS SHE GOING TO GET OUT OF THIS ONE? The humor is dry and charming, the romance sweet and seductive, the hell-bent-for-leather pacing fun and energizing.
Although she's endorsed by Janet Evanovich (and rightly so), Archer's Davis Way capers remind me more of Carl Hiaasen. Their stories zig-zag with laugh-out-loud plots that don't seem like they'll intersect, yet they always do. Although Archer's narrative stays with Davis, it has the same crazy jazz beat of a Hiaasen.
I was so excited to get the next copy of the Davis Way series. I love those books. And, I think this was the best one so far. I have never giggled or laughed so much at a book since reading The Spellman books by Lisa Lutz. My roommate even came and checked on me and wanted to know what was so doggone funny. Ha!
I just love all these characters. Fantasy just really cracks me up. She don't take nothing off anybody. I seriously want their jobs and Davis' wardrobe room!!
Davis Way is way better and funnier than Stephanie Plum, Janet who? Ha!! Seriously, this is one of the best and funniest series out there, I thoroughly recommend them all. Well, that is if you like to be entertained while reading.
A huge thanks to Henery Press (they have the best authors!!) and Net Galley for providing me with this free and SO entertaining e-galley in exchange for an honest review.
It all starts with a Hello Kitty cake, and what ensues is 300 pages of page-turning mystery with a few hundred laugh-out-loud moments, a handful of cover-your-face-oh-poor-Davis predicaments, and two places where I laughed so hard I had to put the book down because I couldn't see for the tears.
I loved every word of catching up with Davis and Bradley Cole, hung on every twist of the story, and was sad to see it end. While it's not necessary to read the first three books in the series to enjoy this one, everybody should read them, so y'all go ahead and get them anyway. I can't wait to see where the story goes next!
I won this book in one of the drawings that I occasionally sign up for on this site. I usually don't like starting a series in the middle, but went ahead and read this one. It is excellent!!! I loved it, and couldn't put it down once I started it. The main character, Davis, is funny and witty, and the whole story line was enjoyable. I will have to start with book one now, and read the whole series. I highly recommend it!
There is never a dull moment. With Davis' boss gone and his wife, Davis double, is driving her her crazy with her problems. I love it when Bianca sends Davis to the doctor. There also is crazy stuff going on in Davis's apartment. Refrigerator part is hilarious. There's a counterfeit scheme and missing plates. All in days work for Davis and her crew.
It feels like a grave injustice to rate any book in the 'Davis Way Crime Caper' series less than four stars! The books just keep getting better as the series progresses!
Once again, Davis Way, Fantasy, Baylor and No Hair are trying to save the casino. Bradley (Davis' husband) is now the manager and they are working together. Being newlyweds, this might not be the best idea. When the events manager disappears, the vault is robbed and Davis and Bradley are living at the casino in the managers suite that looks like New Orleans spewed all over, you know there is going to be mayhem. Add in that Davis is sure Magnolia, the previous manager's wife, is sneaking into their apartments, Biana Sanders is still as crazy as ever and there is a rather crazy pilot helping them out and the laughs are also there. This story has a more serious take on it than previous ones, but Davis still bumbles her way into and out of trouble. Someone had to find the missing platinum and Davis is sure the Banking Conference has something to do with it. Missing guests, counterfeit money and a printing room found hidden in their quarters gets Davis up in arms, especially when Bradley tells her to butt out.
The characters in this story are fleshed out a bit more. We find out about Fantasy's home life and family, and she makes a big mistake in this book that could cost her a lot. Baylor comes across as a young, dumb, bodyguard type character in this story, even more than the last one, but comes through when he is needed. Bradley and Davis show some sides of their relationship that we have not seen before and it adds some dimension to Bradley. Finally, Bianca actually had me feeling a bit sorry for her. The new characters in this story were portrayed well, some funny, some nasty. The plot moved quickly as there was a lot going on, but it was not confusing. Once again, I enjoyed the escapades of Davis and her team. I can't wait to see what Gretchen Archer has in mind for her next story.
I loved this book! I absolutely adore Gretchen's sense of humor!!! She made me laugh out loud over and over again all throughout the book. Many times I went back and reread parts that were so hilarious they had to be re-read and savored again!! I especially like her subtle witty comments that she slips in when you are not expecting them. ....... Like mentioning that they were on a country road that had been built by the "Romans.....". The mysteries and suspense in her books are wonderfully laid out. They are clever and keep you guessing but the clues are all there.... You end up trying to figure out at least one major and a couple of smaller mysteries which only adds to the immense enjoyment and pleasure of the story. The characters are warm and wacky... They have flaws and serious issues just as in all life but you couldn't ask for a more perfect book to snuggle down with and as a tremendous book lover I have felt I found the pot of good with this author and her excellent books!!!!!
Davis Way’s chaotic and crazy life as an undercover security agent for the Bellissimo Casino, set in Biloxi, Mississippi, is a fast-paced, careening roller-coaster ride through crime fiction with a sense of humor. The quirky characters Davis lives and works with are masterfully and colorfully brought to life by Archer. Davis herself is a master of disguise, a queen of quick wit and sarcastic descriptive phrases, in addition to being an intuitive and intelligent organizer, crime expert, and problem solver. Davis is the kind of protagonist we all would like to have as a best friend, and as backup in case we stumble into criminally dangerous situations. Davis’ adventures at the Bellissimo treat readers to a little bit of an exotic vacation and adventure at a casino resort on the Gulf…a bit of escapism that we can relish.
Davis Way is back in a fourth caper at the Bellissimo Resort and Casino. Just as 500 Alabama bankers descend on the Bellissimo, Holder Darby, the Events Coordinator, disappears. While Davis investigates this disappearance, she finds a cat, "knows" that one particular person keeps breaking into her rooms at the Bellissimo, wonders about fake platinum coins found in the casino vault, not to mention the counterfeit money found in a missing guest's suite. With the aid of her crew (Fantasy and Baylor), Davis manages to muddle her way to thwarting the mastermind behind all the craziness happening at the Bellissimo. For added fun, you could listen to this tale of mayhem on audio!
I started the series with this book because that is what the library had, so I listened to this book. Well, I started to listening to this audio book. I couldn't continue because the narrator was horrible. I felt like she worked for the Serta Institute to cure insomnia. She spoke with the most monotone voice I have ever heard.
The writing on the book is just ok. The author added unnecessary detail that did not add to the story or character development. In the end, I could not finish listening to this book out of fear it would make me lose my job by falling asleep at my desk listening to it.
DOUBLE MINT – BOOK 4 IN THE DAVIS WAY CRIME CAPER SERIES BY GRETCHEN ARCHER
When the first book in the Davis Way Crime Caper series (Double Whammy) was being promoted well over two years ago here on Groupon, I just knew that it was going to be a series that I would truly enjoy. But I never, ever, thought I would be counting the days in between each release. Double Mint is the best so far, but that is typically true of most series as you get invested in the characters and the stories and know more about your book “friends” with each subsequent book. This series makes me feel as though I am catching up with “family and friends” each time I read each new book but with MANY more adventures and antics to be sure! Double Mint is a continuation of the wonderful and exciting and turbulent life of Davis Way Cole and her husband, extended family and co-workers at the Bellissimo Casino where she and Bradley now live. Because of the disappearance of the former employee who was in charge of all events at the casino hotel, Davis decided to keep the unruly cat found at the home of the missing Holder Darby until she is found. But, is it really Holder Darby’s cat? This vanishing employee now forces Davis to take over the position of keeping the cray-cray-zies at the casino events (including weddings, conventions and all other functions) under control and under surveillance in addition to playing body double for Bianca Sanders, the casino owner’s wife among many other activities that fall to Davis to handle including the vault breach (or was it?) and the appearance of stacks of money elsewhere. You will absolutely belly laugh as you read about Davis and Bradley now living in the over the top Mardi Gras themed (to say the least) casino manager’s apartment which Davis speaks of as having been decorated from a Spook – Spook Bayou yard sale. And Davis is sure that Magnolia, the former manager’s wife is “haunting” Davis in her new residence that was forced upon her and Bradley when he took over the casino managers position while the big boss is out of town/or the country??? Who knows for sure where Richard is, (or do we?). And with the “haunted” and very unusual things happening, along with the fact that the 72 foot red refrigerator in the apartment won’t work and doesn’t seem to be able to be repaired (or can it?) or moved due (or will it be?) to its size and location, so poor tired and energy-drained Davis cannot even get her morning cup of coffee with half and half that has not turned sour, to start her mind-boggling whirlwind days as head of security (undercover work actually), never mind events coordinator and body double duties. Finding the missing employee is just the tip of the iceberg, (or the top of the huge and seemingly haunted bizarre statue in the apartment). Mystical or imagined (do we know?) When you have to break up two hysterical families during a wedding reception that just about destroyed the ballroom at the casino (thank goodness for the automated sprinkler system!), and also try to figure out what happened to 4 million dollars in platinum coins in the vault, to finding a secret room with printing equipment and then finding another missing person’s guest room full of very convincing “money” albeit funny money, all the while trying to figure out how the bankers convention is fitting into all of this other excitement and how on earth Magnolia the former manager’s wife is getting into Davis’ apartment and why? (or is she”) and how Davis cannot catch her. These things just set the stage for a “vault more” of fun-filled casino adventures throughout the book with all of these activities and much more. And THEN things get even more involved and you will not stop laughing and being surprised while finding out what else is waiting for you around the many turns and twists, all as exciting as Mardi Gras time in New Orleans. There is also a much more serious side to this story too, when Davis becomes very concerned about her friend and co-worker, Fantasy Erb, and her other co-worker, Baylor. Davis is a really great person with a lot of compassion and insight and she tries desperately to help all of those whom she cares about, and this has been true in all of the books so far. This series is much “deeper” than it seems on the surface and I really appreciate seeing this complex character of Davis and the many facets to her. The research that has gone into each book by the author is phenomenal and it shows in each and every book. Not only will you be entertained to the max but you will be vastly enlightened about the complex process of printing and numbering of US currency, recognizing counterfeit money and a variety of things that you just would not know about the financial and banking systems normally. What a great treat to learn something new throughout these stories, and all the while being amply rewarded with a complex and very emotionally lifting, enlightening and humorous book. For anyone who likes to spend some time at a casino to do some gambling, this book is definitely a plus for you and if you are not a gambler, this book will give you great insight into the industry along with a remarkable mystery and much fun and laugh-out-loud paragraphs while getting you to the end of the story and the finish that you just didn’t see coming. Davis is a genius in her field, believe me, and so is Ms. Archer. You can BET on that!!!
I received this book in a contest and in no way did receiving this copy influence my review in any way.
When will they learn to just let Davis do her thing? She might be a little crazy and dramatic but she’s smart and determined with a heart of gold. I love Bradley but I wanted to slap him and everyone else on her team, and tell them back off and let Davis do what she need to do. This was another fun hilarious ride on the crazy train. I’m so excited to see where this series goes next. I feel like each book gets better and better.
Another “secret” Slots tournament is about to start and Davis wakes up to find out the the event coordinator is suddenly missing and not only does Davis have to find her, she also has to take over her job. The tournament is full of Alabama bankers, all trying for the top prizes in cash and platinum. A maniac cat, missing people, fixed slot games, hidden treasure, and a cantankerous giant refrigerator all battle for Davis’s precious time, not to mention her body double gig.
In this book Davis, the casino detective has to find out who replaced platinum and $$ with fakes. All this while living in a magnolia, Jesus apartment in the casino. Of course there is the huge refrigerator that won't work, a former resident that keeps getting in the apartment and a mean cat to handle. Another fun romp through the casino mystery. PS the cat has kittens in the end. HOw cute.
I love this cast of characters. Davis Way Cole is a delight - smart, funny, loveable, emotional, and steady in a crisis. Her husband, Bradley, is perfect for her. I had no idea how all this was going to tie together, and it was one wild ride. Worth every minute.
The book itself was funny and cute, though I think it would have made a little more sense if I had read The others in the series prior. So the book gets 4 stars. But I'm taking 1 away because the audiobook reading was pretty bad. The reader really struggled with male voices, and some of her pacing seemed really weird and distracting.
I love this whole series. It is well written and every book is hilarious! You cannot ‘ skim’ thru the pages or you WILL miss something. There is so much going on you will not want to put it down! Gretchen Archer is a masterful writer! She has way surpassed Janet Evanovitch!
Davis is one of a kind and her life is so messed up! The antics that go on are hilarious and you'll be entertained the whole time. The mystery is sound as ever and the writing just brilliant. Ms. Archer has a gift!
I have enjoyed reading the Davis Way books. They are fun. Double Mint, however, borders on being kind of silly. It was difficult at times to weed through the silliness to hang on to the mystery. I did enjoy the cliff-hanger ending, though.
I loved it! The first ten pages had me laughing like crazy. I read this book in one day and it made it a wonderful day. The mystery was really good and I love all the characters. Each book in this series is just as good as the last. What an excellent writer!
Another funny episode of make believe casino life in Biloxi. Real action starts towards the end but lots of build up and speculation and finger pointing to that point. A rowdy ending with a couple unanswered questions. A good read.
These books are insane (in a good way) and they don't slow down. Whew! There are sweet touching moments (a second or three) and then bat-out-of-hell running around. Also giggles, plenty of giggles here and there.
