storyline had a different twist, I hate series coming to an endgame
I’m disappointed Dave let Matt and Katie outsmart him but it was a good plan. Katie was trifling but smart. The package that the neighbor had confused me. I was trying so hard to figure out how it played into the scenario. It threw me but I knew Katie was entwined somehow. And I don’t understand why Charlie would want his brother ex-fiancée, bc Katie got issues. If I ever need a defense lawyer please don’t recommend Ms. West. She is a terrible lawyer. Court was good as usual. I really like Judge Richter, he was cool people. Now, I like Dave and Casey relationship but it’s going to be very interesting to see the development of this relationship as roommates. I don’t know whether Dave will be able to maintain.
Sure, I had my quibbles, (such as the suspect having parents that were dead in one mention but alive in another, and yet no one bats an eye), but not nearly enough to derail my enjoyment of the story as a whole. As always, I loved the pacing, the simple (yet informative) writing style, and all the wonderful interactions between the characters, though the relationship between Dave and Casey had me feeling SOME type of way when things got rough. I enjoy them together and don't like that threatened by ANYTHING in these stories.
As per usual in a Stephen Penner book, the plot was super intriguing as well in all its legal antics. Dude gets murdered in a gruesome manner that is almost intimate, and the only suspect has an alibi problem. Doesn't help that said alibi is collaborated by one person but disproved by another. It's a messy case for Brunelle and getting messier, because who the hell is telling the truth and who is lying? Furthermore, Brunelle finds himself having those same questions in his love life, deciphering lies from truth (even if they're in his own head). I'm glad to see some growth in Brunelle. Look at my prosecutor getting all mature and stuff.
At any rate, this is a very simple review for a solid book. Good writing, pace, plot, character interactions and of course a VERDICT! I'm happy Penner has started to include them in these later entries of his series. I'd say it was a fantastic final entry for the Brunelle series, but given the way it ends, I'd imagine there will be another one on the way? One can only hope! But I enjoyed getting to know David Brunelle and until a new entry comes, it's time for me to get better acquainted with criminal defense attorney Talon Winter. <3
Alibi Defense is the fourteenth instalment in the David Brunelle Legal Thriller Series. And so the book binge began ... this series turned out to be a gripping and masterfully crafted collection of legal dramas set against the backdrop of Seattle’s criminal justice system. The series follows David Brunelle, a dedicated and sharp prosecutor, as he navigates the complexities of law, morality, and justice. What makes this series stand out is the balance between intense courtroom drama with deeply human stories. David Brunelle is an intriguing character - intelligent, principled, and yet flawed in ways that make him even more relatable. Mr. Penner’s writing easily brings the legal world to life with authenticity, offering a fascinating glimpse into the challenges prosecutors face, from gathering evidence to battling wily defense attorneys. Each book in the series presents a unique and thought-provoking case, often delving into some morally ambiguous territory. The plots are tightly woven, with twists that are both surprising and satisfying. Mr. Penner’s ability to build the tension and suspense is noteworthy, as is his knack for creating vivid, multidimensional characters – both the heroes and villains. So, whether you’re a fan of legal thrillers, crime fiction, or simply enjoy a well-told story, then the David Brunelle series delivers on all fronts. Happy Reading…
This was definitely the best Brunelle yet! Penner had me flummoxed. How would he sidestep this obvious set-up that was near perfectly executed to make it look like he screwed everything up! I should never have doubted Penner's ability to weave a perfect web, even when it looks as if his protagonist was the one caught in it.
The 14th Book in the David Brunell series was very interesting, David and Detective Chen arrest a man who tells them he will have an alibi tomorrow. The man's brother was murdered and this only adds to the story. To make matters more interesting Brunelle s opponent has never tried a murder case before. Great storyline.
I've followed this series for years, and without giving away any spoilers, I just want to say Wow! The plot is more twisted and gnarly, and Brunelle has grown so much from his earlier obnoxious, shallow self. If you like these stories even a little, you'll love this one!
When is the truth the truth? A woman gets involved with two brothers…never works out well does it? Brunelle makes tough decisions and it seems his past is becoming more present than ever. A good read!
The author does a good job of explaining how bias impacts the perception of truth. Unfortunately his own biases regarding human sexuality and courtroom 'drama' are on full display.
Ok book, but way too many old age references about Brunelle . If he is over the hill, maybe the series has run its course. Also, why was he so worried about a rookie defense lawyer ?
