This World Book Day 2022 book is a bit of a self-help/teach book for kids about money and business, or about developing the “boss mindset”.
The contents of the book are: Introduction 1: “First step – Money 101” 2: “Fantasy Business – Dreaming up ideas” 3: “How to turn your ideas into cash” 4: “The magical briefcase every boss needs to have” (including “a take-a-break permission slip” which is important with burn out being a much more talked about issue these days) 5: “Bossing it and doing some good” “What now?”
This book is good, but maybe basic (although that is from an adult’s point of view, and the author says on this “Now, this stuff might seem basic, but these are things lots of grown-ups don’t understand properly!!”). Also, I wouldn’t say that after reading this I will be running a big-money business in the near future. If only the book identified a gap in the market I could get into, but alas, it is up to the reader to have the big ideas.
I liked bits of the book. Basics about money are not really taught in schools, so a book introducing it to children is good. ““Though you might think making money is just for adults, or that business sounds really complicated and inventing stuff is just for clever people, here’s a secret: anyone can be a boss! And it’s actually much easier than you think…” Whilst there is some focus on money there are also reminders that it isn’t the be all and end all: “Money’s important but it’s not everything.”
Mainly though the book is about building the boss mentality - “It means approaching life like a BOSS – being creative and confident, and imaginatively solving problems that come your way. It’s about understanding money and being savvy with how you spend it (and how you save it). And it’s about finding the courage to try new things and not being afraid to fail.” The book touches on business – things like profit, income, costs, budget, goals etc. – and gives examples of entrepreneurs behind businesses, some big and famous, and some not so big and not so famous. There is also an important message about how it is okay to fail – “the path to success is often long and bumpy and full of mistakes”.
Even if you don’t set up a business there are some skills here that would come in useful in everyday life, the summing up of the books says that with those skills “You can spot problems and get to the bottom of them. You can turn them over in your brain and figure out how to solve them. You know how to test things. You know how to focus. You can make mistakes – maybe even lots of them – and learn and grow and make something amazing. And you know how to make a difference to our planet and the people around you.” But “how you use this stuff… well, that bit’s up to you.”
The book is nicely laid out, with some good messages presented in a positive manner, and it doesn’t cost that much as it’s a WBD book. 4/5 stars.
One of the 2022 World Book Day books available for £1. Neat little how to guide to becoming your own boss, encouraging creativity and entrepreneurship in young people, and giving them the tools to turn their ideas into reality. To be honest, it could also be a handy little introduction to some adults just starting out, and give them a few ideas and pointers. Well-written, engaging, and encouraging.
A very interesting and useful collection of information for all those who are interested in setting up their own businesses or sharing their crafts with all. It had some ideas that all could use in all stages in life. It was a slower read but many may find something that they can use.
