could this be a great BL manga? to beat the rest of typical manga? which are noting but straight up(pun intended) porn??
Yes, you are not dreaming! This could very well be the start of an excellent series. Apparently, the author heard the prayers of millions of BL fans and chose to go out of their way to write an interesting story.
It focuses mainly on Satoru, a hatter, and Ryou as the latter came to Japan to die. It starts with their fateful meeting and goes down from there.
The storytelling is one of the best I read in a manga and it definitely makes me want to know more about the characters (and they happen to be well written? yes, they are! very human and deep and realistic!).
The art is just the cherry on top! It might get you a while to adapt if you are used to the typical yaoi anatomy,(not me haha?) because it is very peculiar, but this style is very enjoyable and dynamic.

But thankfully, out of nowhere, you just came into my life at the right time to actually nurture my fujoshi being. Thank you, my dearest manga series, Canis ❤️
I knew from the very first page that you were going to steal my heart.
I mean, what's with that amazing artstyle?! It's so damn different and sharp and pricking my whole being 🎼 yes, I have imbibed it all.
(Cannot wait to do the same for the rest of the volumes!)
This is a very serious age gap amazing BL series. One of the main characters is a hat shop owner. He's damn serious all the time and severely understaffed.
The other main character fell down from the sky on a dark rainy day. Not kidding here. No, it's not a paranormal story! It's just that this peculiar character is a runaway with a dark history.
And damn. Damn. I don't have the sanity to write anymore about their chemistry. Let's leave it at this.

Everything is perfect. I have to order the rest of the series as well!

This is the first English edition of a BL manga that I own that has its own dust jacket! As far as I know, this is fairly common in Japanese editions, but not quite in English ones, so kudos to its English publisher! 🤩 The quality is excellent, too. I'm just so excited for the rest of the volumes to be published in English as well since this is hands down one of my top tier favorites <3

This is the perfect example of a series that grew on me. Probably my least favorite installment of the whole series though. The story definitely didn't make sense to me in the beginning.
But with every new volume things got so much better, and now that we're at The Speaker I barely can't contain my excitement :D

Ein Storylastiger BL, der sehr ruhig und entspannt daher kommt, aber definitiv mehr noch zu bieten hat, vorallem Ryos Vergangenheit, die mit der Mafia zu tun hat, wird sicher noch wichtig - der Band ist ein schöner Auftakt für einen BL, der sich mal nicht durch den Sex auszeichnet :D schön gezeichnet, ein wenig tiefsinnig.

Satoru, a hat maker, happens upon a man lying in the street during a rainy night. He picks him up and feeds him, and in turn that man - called Ryuu - ends up helping him out with his store. Ryuu is from America and full of secrets - before they say goodbye, Ryuu tells Satoru he came to Japan to die. But that wish isn't granted, and the next rainy night Satoru stumbles across Ryuu again, and this time he's injured...
It's an interesting story with strong and unusual characters and really fun art. It's very different from what you usually look at when reading manga, and I really liked that (although I like the usual stuff too). There's been quite a bit of buzz around this manga, and I can see why. I'll definitely pick up the next volume when it comes out.

questo primo volume (tbh credevo fosse un volume unico, poi con le scene finali che sono una sorta di anticipazione del secondo volume ho inteso che si stesse trattando di una dilogia) mi ha lasciato con una sensazione di calore nel petto e la parte più bella credo sia stato proprio il fatto che non fosse uno yaoi usuale. una storia basata sulle perdite, sul valore della vita, sul valore della propria persone. e ho amato il fatto che satoru, grazie a sua nonna, abbia accolto nelle sua abitudini una leggenda e l'abbia resa sua, così come abbia impresso tutta la sua persona nel suo futuro, realizzando cappelli che potessero effettivamente proteggere le persone con una sorta di personalissima e dolcissima blessing. "toccando la testa di una persona la si manda in paradiso, ma toccandole la testa gentilmente per due volte la si può far tornare in vita", ed è quello che lui spera di fare, soprattutto con i suoi stupendi cappelli. e che spera di fare non solo con i suoi clienti, ma anche con ryo. il loro rapporto è ancora agli inizi e sicuramente nel prossimo volume avrà una valenza ancora più importante, ma una cosa è certa: i loro cuori e i loro destini dovevano assolutamente incrociarsi ed è finalmente successo. ryo, dal passato misterioso e dal carattere accondiscendente, è visto come un "cane", una di quelle persone che obbediscono agli ordini del proprio padrone e che sono persi senza degli ordini. e poi satoru, cinico e selettivo, concentrato sul lavoro e più propenso a capire i gusti delle persone in fatto di capelli che a capire se stesso e i suoi bisogni. ed è per questo che sono fatti l'uno per l'altro. ryo sta insegnando a satoru ad amare qualcosa che non sia feltro o stoffa, e saturo sta a sua volta insegnando a ryo quanto sia bello vivere la vita in libertà, senza pensare che serva dipendere da qualcuno per avere uno scopo nella vita. insomma, ho apprezzato tantissimo questo manga e le vibes che ha emanato, è stato molto malinconico e profondo, e sinceramente la mancanza di scene più spicy mi ha reso assolutamente più felice, come se avessero voluto dare più valenza ai loro percorsi, personali e non (ricordiamo, non sono una coppia - o, meglio, non ancora..) e ai loro sentimenti, un mix di assoluta umanità espressa a meraviglia grazie ai disegni di questo mangaka che ritenevo sconosciuto fino a ieri. insomma, vorrei assolutamente e al più presto il secondo volume di questa dilogia e vorrei sciogliermi nella calda profondità di questi disegni per assorbire tutta la loro essenza.. è veramente un manga stupendo.

Une belle histoire, bien équilibrée entre humour et passé sombre. La relation entre les personnages (touchants) évolue à un rythme sain (et ça, ça fait du bien !). J'ai hâte de pouvoir lire la suite !

finally going to dive into the rest of the series so I had to reread the first one. Kuma reprinted it and it looks like the main change is the font with some slight translation changes. It definitely looks cleaner in the new format and the pages are less dense so the book itself is thinner.

This does not have a manga vibe.
I feel like this is a fluffy story with a dark undertone. Probably because it's an intro for things yet to come.
Was a bit confusing at first with the backstory. I'm still not sure whether the Hatter had white hair or black when he was younger.
That bit where the mafia boss did unsightly thing to Ryou was disgusting tho. He's a kid. Pedo much.

To be honest, Ryou and Satoru's story isn't as compelling as the mafia throuple, but I love ZAKK's art style so sos os os sosoooo much. It's so vibrant and evocative and I'll read anything they put out forever.

An incoherent mess. The story keeps jumping between the past and present so it was impossible to keep track of what's happening. I know this is the first part of a series, but it absolutely can't stand on its alone and I'm not compelled enough to keep reading.

Ho iniziato questo volumetto a scatola chiusa, senza interessarmi della trama e senza preoccuparmi di eventuali sequel, cliffhanger ecc
Devo dire che sono un po'... confusa (e innamorata). Non so bene come esprimere al meglio i miei sentimenti. Non so se mi trovo di fronte il futuro manga del mio cuore o se sono di fronte all'ennesima occasione mancata. Solo il tempo e i volumi futuri (che spero arriveranno presto in Italia) potranno illuminarmi e farmi capire fino in fondo quello che provo nei confronti di questa serie. Fa strano parlare di serie considerando che l'adorata J-Pop ha pensato bene di scrivere grosso come una casa Volume UNICO sul retro del volumetto senza che in realtà... Lo sia. Questo volume NON è per niente singolo, non è per niente un volume unico e autoconclusivo e forse è proprio questo uno dei motivi che mi spinge a non esprimermi al meglio, a non perdermi nei miei soliti voli pindarici da pazza fangirl e a mostrare fino in fondo il mio amore. Questa "one shot" è l'inizio di un viaggio (ancora in corso in Patria a quanto ho potuto capire) e solo il tempo mi potrà dire se tutte le mille piste, i dettagli intriganti, le riflessioni che si possono fare sui personaggi e sul loro mondo hanno effettivamente un senso o sono messi a caso per tirare il pubblico, inseriti ad arte per far abboccare i più speranzosi (come me :P) . Questo volumetto è come il menù di un ristorante appena aperto, un menù che ti viene servito con cura e attenzione e che appare a prima vista ricchissimo, pieno di pietanze gustose e invitanti. Ovviamente non potrai sapere se meritano davvero, se sono buone come promettono se non ti butti, se non hai coraggio di ordinarle. Solo l'assaggio ti potrà far capire se quel "ristorante" così lussuoso è solo apparenza o se davvero c'è del buono. Questo volume ti presenta (almeno in parte) le sue carte che si spera possano essere giovate al meglio in futuro. Ci presenta la storia di due uomini molto diversi tra loro per età e background sociale. Troviamo Satoru Kutsuna, un uomo di 29 anni che ha il sogno di rendere il suo negozio di cappelli il migliore, un capo autoritario e deciso nei modi e che spesso per il suo perfezionismo rischia di attirarli le antipatie dei sottoposti e poi...troviamo Ryo Kashiba, un diciannovenne misterioso e intrigante, dal passato tragico che ancora lo perseguita e che lo ha segnato nel corpo e nell'anima. Questi due uomini così diversi, così opposti nel carattere e nei sogni si incontrano un po' per caso, un po' per il destino, e intricciano, senza quasi rendersene conto, un legame speciale e che solo con il tempo potrà rendere entrambi liberi e felici. Fin da subito ci si concentra molto su Ryo e sul suo mondo, su quelle ferite che lo spingono a cercare costantemente un punto di riferimento a cui aggrapparsi, un "Dio" da venerare e a cui essere fedele al pari di un cagnolino. Il suo personaggio ci appare molto interessante così come la storia dell'organizzazione in cui si è ritrovato, volente o nolente, a lavorare. Ci vengono dati molti indizi sul suo lavoro, sul suo rapporto con il capo del clan malavitoso, sulla sua vita e sull'unico affetto che lo ha aiutato a sentirsi meno solo, su quel dolce cagnolino che gli ha insegnato il valore della fedeltà e di un legame che va oltre gli interessi personali. Seppur con molti buchi e con molte parti lasciate (almeno per ora) all'immaginazione del lettore la sua storia è straziante e ricca di dolore e voglia di rinascita. Ryo è un personaggio che non ha mai avuto la fortuna di trovare qualcuno disposto a sostenerlo, a spingerlo attivamente a scegliere per la sua vita e a fare delle scelte consapevoli. Satoru appare nella sua vita come un angelo, un'anima buona e destinata a cambiarlo per sempre. Il rapporto tra i due è molto dolce e se ben sviluppato in futuro potrà regalare molte emozioni e soddisfazioni. Satoru viene un po' lasciato da parte al momento. È un protagonista ma il suo passato e la sua storia non è stata ancora raccontata fino in fondo e spero ci sia presto la possibilità di esplorarla per capire meglio il suo carattere i motivi di quel suo atteggiamento un po' "fastidioso" sul posto di lavoro. Non ho ancora capito se sarà proprio un BL con tanto di relazione intima tra i due protagonisti e questo è forse uno dei punti che più mi preme analizzare in futuro. Solitamente amo creare coppie, creare ship anche distanti anni luce e con personaggi opposti ma in questo caso... Sono un po' combattuta. Vorrei davvero tanto una storia diversa in cui per una volta l'amore non è quello puramente fisico e sessuale, non è quello tra due fidanzati ma qualcosa di più puro, di più platonico. Vorrei tantissimo vedere Satoru non tanto come il fidanzato perfetto, più grande, dolcetto e amorevole ma piuttosto come un "fratellone", un amico sincero in grado di aiutare il povero Ryo a riprendersi in mano le redini del suo destino. Spero che la storia non si riduca tutta a una sottotrama mafiosetta con Ryo costretto a nascondere quella parte oscura di sé, con Satoru ossessionato dal passato del suo amico/compagno... vorrei che per una volta ci si concentrasse sul legame, sulla crescita personale e sull'importanza che un'amicizia sincera e un legame speciale può avere su un'altra persona. Insomma... Mi rendo conto di aver sclerato senza però aver detto molto è che... È davvero impossibile dare un giudizio su una palese introduzione, su un capitolo creato ad arte per attirare l'attenzione in attesa di qualcosa di più profondo. Ho amato sicuramente la scelta di non focalizzarsi troppo sul sesso e sull'amore magico e salvifico tra i due. Sarebbe stato semplice rendere Ryo fin da subito un ragazzino innamorato dell'uomo maturo e responsabile, del suo salvatore oppure rendere Satoru ossessionato in modo inquietante dall'attrazione verso un ragazzo più giovane e nel fiore degli anni e invece viene fatto capire che esiste un legame, che esiste un interesse ma che può essere tutto...che può diventare tutto quello che vogliamo o osiamo immaginare.... Una bella amicizia o... Qualcosa di più. Ho apprezzato la psicologia di entrambi i protagonisti e il loro modo di aprirsi e di farci entrare almeno in parte nella loro testa e nei loro problemi. Amo alla follia il tratto del disegno, perfettamente armonico con la storia e in grado di rendere al massimo sia i momenti più dolci che quelli decisamente più dolorosi e tragici. Sicuramente è un progetto che terrò d'occhio. Spero escano presto i nuovi volumi per poterli aggiungere alla mia collezione e spero tanto che la storia possa evolversi nel modo migliore possibile e dando al lettore un bel messaggio di speranza per il futuro. Fino ad allora... Che dire? Lo consiglio? Non lo consiglio? Sinceramente... Non lo so! Al momento mi è difficile consigliarvi una storia che ha tutto ancora da raccontare, che ha ancora un mondo da esplorare... Sicuramente ve lo sconsiglio come standalone. Non fatevi ingannare da quella malefica scritta, se siete alla ricerca di una storia da" una botta e via" non fa al caso vostro e se amate leggere storie concluse con un inizio e una fine questo vi lascerà non poco l'amaro in bocca. Iniziatelo solo se non vi spaventa immergervi in una nuova avventura misteriosa e affascinante e se amate i bei personaggi, complessi e ricchi di sfumature. Ci sono, visto il background travagliato di Ryo, dei trigger di violenza e abusi e anche se non c'è nulla di così grafico ed estremo se vi fanno effetto certi argomenti (abuso su minori, violenza sessuale, morte ecc) beh... Evitatelo? Tenetelo a mente prima di iniziare la lettura (e prima di lamentarvi inutilmente XD). Sono super curiosa di scoprire cosa succederà in futuro e spero la J-Pop non mi faccia impazzire nell'attesa!

Sarebbe stato semplice rendere Ryo fin da subito un ragazzino innamorato dell'uomo maturo e responsabile, del suo salvatore oppure rendere Satoru ossessionato in modo inquietante dall'attrazione verso un ragazzo più giovane e nel fiore degli anni e invece viene fatto capire che esiste un legame, che esiste un interesse ma che può essere tutto...che può diventare tutto quello che vogliamo o osiamo immaginare.... Una bella amicizia o... Qualcosa di più. Ho apprezzato la psicologia di entrambi i protagonisti e il loro modo di aprirsi e di farci entrare almeno in parte nella loro testa e nei loro problemi. Amo alla follia il tratto del disegno, perfettamente armonico con la storia e in grado di rendere al massimo sia i momenti più dolci che quelli decisamente più dolorosi e tragici. Sicuramente è un progetto che terrò d'occhio. Spero escano presto i nuovi volumi per poterli aggiungere alla mia collezione e spero tanto che la storia possa evolversi nel modo migliore possibile e dando al lettore un bel messaggio di speranza per il futuro. Fino ad allora... Che dire? Lo consiglio? Non lo consiglio? Sinceramente... Non lo so! Al momento mi è difficile consigliarvi una storia che ha tutto ancora da raccontare, che ha ancora un mondo da esplorare... Sicuramente ve lo sconsiglio come standalone. Non fatevi ingannare da quella malefica scritta, se siete alla ricerca di una storia da" una botta e via" non fa al caso vostro e se amate leggere storie concluse con un inizio e una fine questo vi lascerà non poco l'amaro in bocca. Iniziatelo solo se non vi spaventa immergervi in una nuova avventura misteriosa e affascinante e se amate i bei personaggi, complessi e ricchi di sfumature. Ci sono, visto il background travagliato di Ryo, dei trigger di violenza e abusi e anche se non c'è nulla di così grafico ed estremo se vi fanno effetto certi argomenti (abuso su minori, violenza sessuale, morte ecc) beh... Evitatelo? Tenetelo a mente prima di iniziare la lettura (e prima di lamentarvi inutilmente XD). Sono super curiosa di scoprire cosa succederà in futuro e spero la J-Pop non mi faccia impazzire nell'attesa!

Review 2022: Got KUMA's edition. The print is very high-quality, simply love how vibrant the colors on the cover are.
The first volume of the Canis series is interesting because while it sets a lighthearted rom-com, there's also a somber foreshadow tied to Ryou's shady past shown through flashbacks and certain events unrelated with his time with the hatter Satoru.
KUMA's 2022 edition contains an aditional extra chapter that's small yet funny, and I assume it must have been drawn by ZAKK this year because the art style is also different from the rest of the book, it's more close to the style she perfected when she's working on The Speaker arc of this series.
If you want a plotty BL, this is the one. You'll see.

"You're the first person I've ever met who's made me feel like it's okay to be selfish..."
Coming from two whole complete worlds and getting to know one another by Satoru taking in Ryou as he was just sitting by the alleyway. Their relationship starts to grow from that moment. Seeing how two people can bring out the best from one another and feel like inspiration/motivation to do things is such a wonderful thing seen through them. Satoru starts to change and those around him can see this new glow on him as Ryou sticks around for a while and Ryou notices that Satoru is starting to play an important role in his life, and what he wants this new life of his to be. The emotional and hilarious ride it has in stored is worth the read.

it was fine. I wish it was a little more focused. It didn't lean enough into the romance, or the mafia, or the hat making. so it felt a little vague hitting all 3 parts. I think if it dove deeper into 1 or 2 places it wouldn't felt more cohesive.
also the print book had some super stiff paper so not as good of a in hand feel.
I would pass on the #2.

CANIS does not seem like the quintessential manga. The art style is fantastic and the plot line is nothing out of the ordinary but it does manage to hook you. Although I like my BL smutty, this has somehow weaved itself into my list of favorite mangas.

Absolutely loved Zakk's quirky art style, but I found the story way too confusing (it should be noted that I read all available chapters for the series currently posted online).

Ya no me acordaba así que lo he releído antes de continuar con la serie. Historia interesante, con la mafia de por medio, un chico misterioso y un sombrero. De esas que se cuecen poco a poco.
