Improper Mage

Rate this book
Liana Monroe considered herself the most talented mage in all of Triaedian. Too bad no one else did. They only cared about how imperfect she was compared to her two lovely sisters. And with a new courting season upon them, Liana once again feels the weight of high society stifling her dreams to be a respected mage instead of a dutiful wife. That was impossible though. Women weren’t allowed to study magic.

Everything changes after the ruthless vampire king, Damien Ashwood, stumbles upon her performing advanced magic. She expects punishment. Expects any chance at freedom to be torn away from her because only males are allowed to practice higher magic. But he does something far worse. The king proposes.

Fighting to maintain some semblance of control over her life despite the king’s plans to wed her, all while an old threat of rebellion makes a resurgence in the kingdom, Liana struggles to hide her powerful and chaotic magic. Now she must choose between the private and independent life she always dreamed of or embrace the king and the power she’d been blessed with to save her kingdom.

For a debut novel, the story was enjoyable and engrossing.
It has a great setting, interesting plot revolving around politics and magic, mystery elements and a swoonworthy, dark and compelling vampire king.
Did I say that the setting is a kingdom populated by three races, vampires, werewolves and human mages. Which means that it has everything I love most in books, fantasy elements and it's a historical romance. Amazing!
Onwards to the most important part in my romance books and that is characterisation. It is well done here and the characters are fleshed enough, even the secondary ones.
This is especially praiseworthy when we know it's work of a new author.
So why the rating isn't higher?
Well, like I said the book was enjoyable and the plot was pretty complex taking into consideration the number of pages it has and that it's a first in the series but I just wasn't sold on the romance part. I liked Damien well enough and it's not that I think Liana is a special snowflake and therefore should hate her (those kind of heroines usually further the plot by doing stupid mistakes and not learning from them)...I'm just not sold on their big romance story. He was okay but she was really rushing to the wrong conclusions about him constantly and acting superior which goes against everything she said she hated about other women.
There wasn't any great miscommunication to be angry about. I don't see why she was so distrustful and kind to all others except her fiancee. She stated numerous times that her magic could protect her from everything, then what is there to fear.
I love powerful female characters but I want that magical power to be accompanied by even greater personality traits or that we, at least see some character growth.
Maybe in the sequel when we get some mysteries revealed...
Additional thing that I didn't find too appealing was the language because it was sometimes too modern for the setting and the topics of conversations were inappropriate for the occasion and the audience.
Those occassions weren't too numerous though so don't let my ungenerous rating (this rating is above my average goodreads rating *shame*) distract you from reading this book especially if you, like me, love reading books with fantasy setting, good worldbuilding and historical romances with likeable main characters.

IMPROPER MAGE is the first book in a new series by a new author, Taylor Westwood.

In a world similar to our own, Liana lives in Triaedian - a land where shifters, vampires, and mages all live in... harmony?! As a female, she doesn't have many options, and the only magic she is supposed to know is how to help with her household. Luckily for us, Liana is not content with that and learns as much as she can by herself, being a strong and proficient mage, even if she can never show it.

One night she meets Damien, the King of Triaedian, who is fascinated by her. He has ruled alone for some time but, maybe, it is time for him to find his Queen. Liana is flattered until she finds out he has expressed interest in two others as well. Then she feels betrayed and played.

The interaction between these two is brilliant. Liana is seen as an 'odd' one in that she doesn't abide by society's rules for what a woman should do. Damien sees this and doesn't seem to want to change her, delighting in who she is. The attraction is hot and immediate but, once again due to society's rules, they are forbidden to act upon it until they are married. They do push the boundaries and have one particularly steamy moment, but will he marry her or one of the others?

I found the world-building to be brilliant, giving me enough information to see how the world worked without overloading me all at once. I also adored the hidden depths of others characters that sneaked through every so often. There is an overall story arc here so don't expect a HEA ending. What you do get is a fantastic ending that will definitely leave you wanting more.

I immediately went onto the author's website to see if there was any indication of when the next book was due out. For a debut book, this was amazing and I loved every word. Highly recommended by me!!

ps - and if you find out when Improper Queen is due out before me, please let me know! I need it!!

I’m here for any book with a dark haired, man bun, “touch her and you die”, “who hurt you” love interest and Taylor did not disappoint! Great world building. It was a fun read and I kept making parallels from the world in the book and our own. The FMC gives “not like other girl” vibes- but in her defense, she really isn’t like the others in this book. This is the first in a series and I’m so excited for the sequel!

I don’t know what’s come over me the past year, but I’ve been delving into some magical historical romance pretty hardcore. Give me some corsets, foppy vampire/mage heroes, societal constraints, and repressed sexuality and I’m all in. Throw in some elves or fairies and you’re tempting me with a real good time. My latest dip into ye olde romance with a magical bent along with a repressed heroine is Improper Mage by Taylor Westwood. Overall, I enjoyed this, I had a few nitpicks here and there, but a worthwhile read.

A Little Bit of Plot
In the land of Triaedian, real magic is off limits to women. Relegated to limited home tending spells, the female mage community has few outlets or means in which to better themselves outside of landing the perfect husband. Imagine the haute ton of London, with its gossipmongers and self centered foppish males who are either looking for a dowry or a means to an heir. Unbeknownst to literally everyone, even her very understanding and supportive father, Liana Monroe, is the most powerful mage of the time. Forced to study magic through her brother’s hand-me-down spellbooks, Liana, can heal the sick, brew potions, and perform advanced spellwork. While surreptitiously performing an advanced spell, she is observed by the vampire king, Damien Ashwood. Living without a mate for over 100 years, Damien is captivated by Liana and her magic. Soon enough, he courts her with the intention of marriage after living the kingly bachelor life for so long. Liana must decide if Damien is only interested in her magic ability or for true lurve.

The Compliment Sandwich
The Top Bun (The Pro)

Damien Flippin’ Ashwood
From jumpstreet Damien is swoon worthy. Who couldn’t resist a gorgeous, dark haired, Tom Ellis looking vampire, with a sense of humor and the ability to deliver the sexiest lines laden with innuendo? No one! That’s who! Well, maybe like Buffy…wait..no..almost forgot about Angel AND Spike.
Okay, maybe the Winchester brothers…I think Dean would still hit it though.

As soon as he makes his intentions toward Liana public, he ensures that she’s protected round the clock. Unfortunately, she seems to constantly find trouble while also eluding her guards. After one incident which left her depleted of magic and unable to remain conscious, Damien tends to her. He pulls out the “getting to know you” questions as her defenses are down and she's willing to share more personal information than normal. They discuss a vampire's need for blood and how it’s mostly partaken during times of pleasure.
“I can smell your arousal. You cannot lie to me.” He leaned forward and pushed aside her hair to breathe in at her neck. She froze, not knowing if he would bite her or not. More importantly, she didn’t know if she wanted to tell him no. “After we are married, I will show you just how pleasurable the bite can be for both of us”.

Liana continues to fight Damien at every turn, however, the more she holds back, the more Damien becomes enamored with her.
“My ego does not exist when you are around, my little mage. You knock me down every chance you get.”
She nodded. “You’re welcome for keeping you humble, my king.”

The banter between Liana and Damien is enjoyable; however, at times, I just had a little too much of Liana’s obtuseness. This leads into my issue with the book:

The Meat (The Con)
At times: Liana
If you were to peruse my bookshelf, you would come across many novels devoted to the spunky, intelligent, before her time, bluestocking heroine. While I applaud Liana’s determination to devote her life to magic and never marry, she is literally offered everything she wants on a silver platter and has reservations. At times, I wanted to throttle her and say “chica, this man (vampire) is willing to let you practice your magic, continue learning, and he’s hot as hell”, what more do you want? She also bordered on Mary Sue territory at times; new spells just came easy to her, and she could perform magic unheard of before. Now, I will say that there is some mystery as to her past and where this magic stems from, so we may learn more in subsequent books.

Although I’m saying all this, I want to be clear: I did like Liana’s character. It’s just sometimes I wanted to flick her on the nose and say “don’t”. Never has there been a character that needed to ‘get some’ more than Liana Monroe. Maybe going to the bone zone on the reg will chill her out a bit.

The Bottom Bun (The Pro)
The World Building
At times I pictured this as a cross between Bridgerton and Harry Potter, if Hermione was unable to perform magic and forced to marry Marcus Filch or something. The way in which Westwood describes the food, clothing, and atmosphere is very immersive. The ball scenes, in particular, contain abundant descriptions of the ballgowns and jewelry along with the sumptuous food.
“Liana truly did love the look of the gown. Loved how the designer created lapels of the blue fabric that created a V-shape toward her waist with elaborate embroidery along the edges in shimmering silver thread. Loved the ivory ruffles cascading from her neckline and the way the scalloped edges of the gown flowed downward from the right side of her waist across the front. She still hated how uncomfortable it made her”.

Besides the everyday items, Westwood also spends a great deal of time describing the magic itself. Because Liana is performing feats never before witnessed, there is almost an awe in how her magic is described.
She didn’t make it five steps before the magic answered her call. It surged from the depths of her core, filling her body. Her entire body glowed a brilliant golden light right before she threw her arms forward and with a roar of vengeance, threw her power out in a rapidly expanding shield of golden light.

Lastly, along with mages and vampires, we are also introduced to shifters (werewolves). Both the vampire and shifter culture allow women much more freedom, and in some cases, are revered. We also learn that dipping your wick cross species in this world is forbidden. Although, I guess it’s overlooked when it’s the hot as hades vampire king who has it bad for an undercover female mage. Needless to say, we do gain substantial insight into each of these species and their standing in the community.

Overall, I enjoyed the heck out of this book. I’d certainly recommend it if you are looking for something with a lot of action and some female empowerment. This is a first in a series, however, so the relationship between Damien and Liana has a lot of room to grow moving forward. The next book is entitled Improper Queen, so I’m assuming she and Damien have tied the knot and have gotten onto full on log’ jammin. I’m definitely interested in seeing how this story will unfold.

Improper Mage is the first book in a new series that perfectly combines regency romance with a fantasy setting.

It follows Liana, a powerful mage in Triaedian, a kingdom where apparently mages, werewolves, and vampires coexist in harmony, only in the customs of the mages women are not seen as anything more than wife material and aren't taught more than what is considered the necessary skills in magic for running their home.

However, Liana not satisfied with living a simple life has taught herself advanced magic and grown into a very powerful mage, even though this comes at the cost of hiding her abilities and her true self from everyone she knows, including even the closest to her. She is constantly fighting against society's perceived notions of equality, making her the center of critics in her society, often being the object of comparisons to every other lady in town.

With the courting season commencing, Liana must endure the endless amount of engagements, and parties hoping to survive another year or procure a bearable marriage offer that would allow her to live her life hidden from all the commotion of society's events. But everything changes once she catches the eye of the handsome and ruthless vampire king Damian, who stumbles upon her performing advanced magic and becomes enraptured by the enigma of her, causing him to begin courting her aiming to make her his wife.

I absolutely adored this book, it combines the setting and premise I love from Regency romances with the worldbuilding, intrigue, and magic of fantasy series. This first installment focuses on developing Liana's and Damien's relationship, while also providing us with insight into the conflict that surrounds the kingdoms and the hierarchy of magic and workings of the different components of the government and factions.

I loved the main characters, Liana is such a badass, intelligent, rebel, kindhearted, and has such an intriguing and mysterious past; while Damien has such a powerful and imposing presence but he also is thoughtful and passionate. Both characters make me root so much for their relationship, I loved reading the evolution, from their first encounter to the last page, I am anxious for the next book to come out and be able to see the development of the story.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. All thoughts and opinions are my own, and I want to thank BookSirens and the author for providing me with this eARC.

Improper Mage is a delicious tension filled book. It kind of gives off Taming of the Shrew vibes but is definitely not a retelling of Taming of the Shrew. (PS one of my favorite types of stories)

In this story, we are introduced to a kingdom that has and uses magic. However, women are only allowed to use the most basic of magic to keep their household in good working order. All advanced magic is reserved for men. In walks Liana, you just know that someone has to break the rules. Liana has been practicing magic in secret for years. Training herself to do more and more difficult spells, all to benefit the people suffering around her who can't afford the expensive magic of the trained males. In this kingdom, as there is in most kingdoms, there is a mating season. During this season there will be grand balls held so that everyone can find their best match. Liana is one of three daughters in her family that is looking for a match. Of course, Liana is a bit of a wall flower much to the chagrin of her family. When Liana sneaks away from the ball to get some fresh air she is caught practicing magic. As you can imagine, this turns her life around and causes a bit of chaos. Liana tries desperately to keep her life the same as it has been but finds that to be increasingly difficult. As her world changes around her, she discovers new and terrifying things and isn't always certain who she can trust. Can she even trust herself.

I absolutely loved this book. I highly recommend it. It had suspense, tension, conflict, and a bit of romance. I think you should check it out.

I am so totally in love with this novel. The characters are richly developed, they have such depth and strength. The world building is quite amazing and enthralling. I literally could not put this down. I NEED the next installment. I quite literally almost cried when I could not find a release date. Please make it soon. I’m over the moon for this series. Definitely recommend! My 5 star ratings are few and far but this is one I can give freely. Kudos to the author for an excellent ride for her reader.

Damien and Liana had undeniable chemistry from the start. King Damien never thought he would find love until he met Liana. Liana the Mage was talked about by everyone. She was the odd one no one understood. King Damien found himself smitten with her beauty, intelligence, caring heart, and witt. The two of them together will be powerful. Looking forward to The Improper Queen…

I really want to know what happens next so I’m very much looking forward to Improper Queen! This was fun! Improper Mage takes place in a Regency Era fantasy setting where there are mages, vampires and shifters. Liana isn’t looking forward to courting season because she’d rather be studying spells and helping out the people in her city who are too poor to pay the Mages’ expensive fees. She also likes taking cello lessons, gardening, and painting. She’s self taught when it comes to magic, because women in Triaedian aren’t allowed to be taught magic. The king of Triaedian is a vampire and the moment Liana lays eyes on him for the first time she can’t move. Everyone else has curtsied or bowed and she’s staring. And then when she takes a moment to herself at the ball and he finds her. Their first conversation is so flirty and easy! Then Damien, the vampire king, asks to court her the next day. Of course he’s hasn’t looked for a wife in his twenty years of being king and he’s asked not only her, but two other women. He really only has eyes for her, but it’s interesting watching Liana not only discover this, but let herself believe it. Add in a trauma regarding her magic being discovered that Liana can’t remember and a reassurance of rebels who want to change their society to make mages, vampires, and shifters live separately instead of working together keeps this novel moving forward and adds a layer of mystery. Liana and Damien have amazing chemistry as they try desperately to keep their hands off one another until they’re married.

This book was amazing. The writing was compelling and fluid. The world building was simple and solid. The magic system was perfect. And the characters were so relatable there was no chance of not falling in love with them. I love Liana and how brazen and bold she is in a society that has done nothing but tell her she has to be the opposite to survive. Mage women have always been oppressed by the patriarchy only being taught how to do spells to clean and care for their households. Liana will stand for none of it, and I was all to happy to be here for it. The relationship between Liana and Damian was my favorite. All the witty banter and conversations had me laughing out loud. I couldn’t put this book down. I will say that was not particularly thrilled at the ending and need the second book asap as I am eager to see what becomes of Liana and Damian, and find out the secrets that are being kept.

…won’t you interject?—-to tell me more!

This an amazing first debut novel of this up in coming author!!! From the lovely descriptive detail of the characters to the constant whiplash of a moody vampire king I couldn’t put it down!

I loved seeing Liana’s back story of her magic unfold, which has still left me guessing, and I cannot wait to see how she continues to grow in the next book Improper Queen.

And of course I am in love with a particular dinner scene that involves a battle of wit, family drama, and humor.

Will I interject and tell you more?

Insert a sexy vampire king smirk. “No.” I don’t think I will…Read it for yourself!

Take the Bridgerton series, but make it magical. Then give it high stakes political intrigue. That is my quickest, highly simplified take of Improper Mage.

For sure, I would give reader’s the heads-up that there is violence in this book. The political intrigue is no joke in Westwood’s world. However, I would also put a content warning for the fucking patriarchy. If you have ever been on the business end of Old White Man syndrome, get ready for flashes of recognition in this plot. It can suck.

In terms of the steam level, the temperature is as subdued as a cup of earl grey. The author keeps true to the expectations of this sudo-regency world. So, no penetrative sex until marriage! This apparently includes vampire bites “for pleasure”. In the meantime, Westwood sprinkles bits of sexual tension so generously between our FMC and MMC that I, too, became impatient to be bitten by a vampire already.

Mystery grows in the background, giving weight to the plot that no Bridgerton series or Austen story has. It makes it all more exciting. At the same time there is serious inner turmoil the FMC experiences that those with traumatic responses may recognize and appreciate.

It all comes to a head only by the end so we have one conflict partly resolved. Our FMC is ready enough to face off with the Boss Fight version of this plot.

Then it ends.

Which makes my biggest criticism of this book. There is no sequel already published!

That is truly the one thing that keeps me from a perfect rating. Something needed completely resolved and I’m not sure anything was. The plot and characters give me something to eagerly await though. Would absolutely read the next book.

I can't believe this is this author's first published book! It is so well written, the world building is second to none as are the characters. This book truly comes alive in your mind as you read it, you are there sometimes watching what's unfolding, other times you really do feel part of it all. There are so many twists and turns but they are done right, they keep the story exciting and intriguing. The plot is strong, action packed and everything you could want. As for the characters, if you don't fall in love with Damien Ashwood the vampire King, there's something wrong with you. What exactly are his feelings and plans for Liana? You will have to read it and find out. Liana is not only magically powerful, she's a very strong and opinionated young lady that doesn't want a husband... Liana and Damien would make the perfect couple on many levels, they would make a very powerful couple for a start.
I've got to say that I actually found myself smiling multiple times as I read this book, no matter how much I'm enjoying a book it's not often they actually make me physically smile and definitely not at various times throughout the story. I really cannot wait for the next book! This really is a must read book.

I never would have guessed that this was the first published book from the author! It was so well written, and I loved the story line. It was developed with a few twist and turns that I'm still trying the figure out before I get to read book #2!

The character development had me feeling like Liana was part of my family and I was riding along in the carriage to attend the courtship ball. I was on the edge of my seat reading the whole book and I finished the entire story in 1 day because I could not put it down. I needed to know how the relationship between Liana and the king would develop. While I love a good romance I was also loving the independence and strong will of the protagonist. Liana can certainly hold her own against the city of mages, vampires, and shifters.

I am already following the author waiting to hear about when the sequel will be released!

I devoured this book! It was so engaging and paced so well that I couldn't put it down. The main character's voice was very clear and I didn't feel bombarded with too much information; the story unfolded and the culture of the world building flowed smoothly like it was something that I was already familiar with. There is enough of a mystery unfolding that I look forward to book 2 to see how it all comes together.

The author did a great job of blending historical and paranormal elements into a fun plot and it never felt forced. The female main character chafes at the constraints that a patriarchal society demands, hiding her true self until circumstances arise that force her to reveal what she's truly capable of.

HINT: it's being a badass!

I can't wait until the next installment!

This book had everything I could've asked for!

Taylor Westwood's Debut Novel was everything I'd hoped it would be and so much more. It follows the story of a young feminist woman in a world of outdated traditions. A story of magic and romance, it takes place in a kingdom where three species - mages, vampires and shifters - live together in harmony. The storyline covers a range of relevant topics in a mature and intelligent way without diverting from the main character's story.

It was a well written piece, making it easy to read and I basically haven't put it down since I started it. I will be eagerly awaiting the sequel to delve further into the world of Liana Monroe.

Liana just wants to study magic in peace, but instead her parents plan a bleak future for her - marriage to a widowed older man with children is the most they expect for her. She has been taught her entire life to hide her magic. At a courting dance, she is discovered making up spells by none other than the King of the land. Damien is King of a land where vampires, mages and shapeshifters live in peace. For more than 100 years, no woman has tempted him to take a bride and Liana's uniqueness is like no other. This is a fantastic tale - the characters are written so well and have such depths, the plot unravels in layers with plot contexts of political intrigue and racial discrimination. 5/5 stars.

I could not put this book down. It started a bit slow but just got better and better as I read it. I loved the characters of Liana and King Damien. Liana is a mage who does magic but hidden as in society this is frowned upon for a women to do more than necessary. She is so advanced. King Damien who is a vampire meets Liana at a ball and is fascinated by her as she does not behave the way all the other young ladies do. The romance is beautifully written and the storyline is excellent.

Liana also had such powerful magic that it endangers her due to others wanting that power she has within herself. She only wants to help others and better their lives. There is a rebellion happening as well around the kingdom and other kingdoms and this is part of the story too. There is mystery and romance in this wonderful story and I cant wait for the next book Improper Queen! I'm hanging out for the next instalment.....

Wow…..How do you review a story that kept you enthralled from start to finish? A totally different story that gave me both the Midieval and paranormal story lines mixed together with a taste of bias and cultural differences thrown in. What a wonderful storyline with action, adventure and making you look at your own heart and feelings about love and not following the norm in who you are supposed to love and marry. Truly enjoyed and could not put it down once I picked it up and am now going to find the second part of this beautiful story.

3.5 stars and I am TORN between 3 and 4.

I was HOOKED from the first page. I mean regency romance + magic - yes, please. And my interest did not wain one bit while reading. I loved the characters and the storyline. Liana has powerful magic but lives in a society that doesn't give a fig (or worse) about a woman's magic. And then of all the people to notice, it's the hot vampire king. Their relationship is great, as both have cards they are hiding and it doesn't allow them to be honest. Yet, they feel romantically attracted.

So I pretty much was hooked until the last page. When the book just ABRUPTLY ends. Like so much so that I would have thought I missed something but there was an Acknowledgements page. SO many loose ends that I need to have wrapped up.

dang the first 95% was fantastic but please, continue this story.

Thanks to BookSirens for the ARC!

This was a fun romantic fantasy book with an interesting premise. In the book we're following two main characters and their romance in Damien and Liana. The fantasy world we're dropped in for this book involves a kingdom with three species including vampires, werewolves, and mages. Liana is a young girl who doesn't believe in love and isn't excited about the upcoming season in high society. She is born to a mage family and just wants to study magic. The only issue is that in the mage society, women aren't allowed to practice advanced magic and can only learn basic spells involving housework. So bored with the drivel of high societies superficial ways, Liana isn't seriously looking for a husband or love. That is until she catches the eye of the vampire King, who actually does spark her interest. Soon they are involved in a fiery romance and Liana is close to losing her heart to the handsome vampire King.

My thoughts: I enjoyed this story! The characters are interesting enough with different facets to their personalities. We're kept on our toes throughout the story's budding romance. And there was just enough conflict throughout the story to keep it interesting.

Why not 5 stars?

I found some of the tropes used a bit overdone for me personally, not to say I don't enjoy those tropes, and there's nothing new under the sun (right?) but I did find some "overused" tropes in this story. (Ex. I'm not like other girls…., chose one trope, etc.)

Overall: I'd recommend this book, I found it interesting and fun to read and finished it fairly quickly. Also, I believe this is the author's debut novel, so I'm excited to see what the author writes in the future!

The story itself has a lot of promise and I enjoyed it. I liked the general idea a lot but the writing left something to be desired. I am excited to keep reading to see the authors growth knowing this was a debut book. It was a light easy read so I won’t harp on the lack of descriptiveness/world building, I didn’t really mind that in such a short story. What really stuck out to me was the confusing writing style that left me often confused on who “she” was or who was the one talking in that quote. It gave me slight Bridgerton with magic vibes.

Personal rating system
1⭐️-could not finish it, not for me
2⭐️⭐️-eh, I finished it but didn’t enjoy it
3 ⭐️⭐️⭐️- I liked it, good story
4⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️- I really enjoyed it
5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️- I loved it AND will reread it

Bravo

For a debut novel this is outstanding. Frankly, it's good even without that consideration.

The only way I can think of that would have let me enjoy the novel more is if I were a girl. LOL.

I'm definitely keeping an eye on this series and author.

I hope the deeper secrets of this world and character are ones I can appreciate. All too often I find myself cringing at some revealed dark truth. Can't blame the authors entirely in those instances though. Good luck and good travels.

This was a great read - I honestly have no idea how I even found it - but it was great. I have been branching off a little into reading books with mages, shifters and vampires and this was a fun read for me. Liana sometimes is a little off putting because she claims to be non-judgmental but is sometimes the most judgmental of the them all. I am excited to see where this books goes and what happens with her and her magic.

This is an interesting first novel, it grabs your attention and makes it hard to put down. The book has a historical romance feel, with the protagonist being part of high society. The main character is a rebellious young adult that loves learning new spells and practicing magic.
