In 1920, Henry B. (H.B.) Garlock and some months later his bride, Ruth, traveled to West Africa to bring the gospel to a place known as "the white man's grave." Before We Kill and Eat You tells the Garlocks' fascinating real-life story of faith and calling in the face of malaria, cannibals and witch doctors. Readers will be inspired and encouraged by tales, as if taken straight from the book of Acts, of blind men healed and of people raised from the dead. Though many of their colleagues before them succumbed to death, H.B. and Ruth persevered in the midst of unbelievable hardship to reap an incredible harvest of believers that continues to this day. Garlock knew how to write a gripping title, that's for sure. Unfortunately, that seems to be the extent of his skills with a pen. This book was chock full of interesting stories that fell on their faces due to lackluster presentation. Many important details were skipped over and many unimportant details were mixed in, making the accounts here feel incomplete or confusing. I think I would have enjoyed them much more if I was sitting with the Garlocks over dinner, listening to them tell their stories, rather than reading them on my own.
While I had some differences of opinion with the Garlocks' doctrine, I will say it was inspiring to imagine the faith, dedication, and perseverance the Garlocks had while in their mission field. The cracks in his writing style were filled with his passion for the Gospel.
Seeing the work God accomplished through Henry and Ruth Garlock was truly incredible. If writing technique and style is less important to you than a story's content, you will enjoy this book. Their testimony is inspiring and powerful. As a writer, though, I feel as though every story worth telling is worth telling well, and that is why I can't give this book more than 2 stars. It's nothing against the message of the book - I personally and simply did not enjoy the experience of the book.
Love the book mainly because of the content of the true story of the life of a dedicated spirit filled missionary. And what God can do through them. I highly recommend this book to everyone especially the younger generation.
I have never heard of this missionary before, and to be honest only picked it up because the title was so strange, but I am glad I picked up the book off the library shelves and gave it a chance
This is a phenomenal book. Very well- written, and the stories of miracles and faith will build up your faith! I recommend it to people often. This was my second time reading it.
For the first section I found it one of the most ill-written works I've read recently. But the fascinating storyline and improved writing style improved the experience overall!
