Maximilian (Maxi), the eldest daughter of the Croyso family, grows up being abused by her father. As a consequence of the physical and mental trauma, she develops a crippling inferiority complex about both her stutter and her physical appearance as well as a general lack of self-respect.
When Maxi’s father, Duke Croyso, receives a royal order from the King to fight the Red Dragon Sektor, he decides to marry his daughter off to Riftan Calypse, a peasant knight. Duke Croyso’s plan is to push off his martial responsibilities to his son-in-law. Maxi thus finds herself forced into a marriage with a man she barely knows. The newlyweds spend their first night together, but they become separated immediately as Riftan leaves for war early next morning.
Fast forward three years later, and the couple reunites when Riftan comes back to the city to celebrate his victory in war. Although the two spent only one night together and Riftan is a stranger to Maxi, she is afraid that he might want to divorce her, for the divorce would mean a death sentence for the young woman.
What are Riftan’s intentions? Will Maxi find the strength to overcome her trauma and lack of self-confidence? Will the couple survive and find love against all odds?
This volume collects episodes 1–39 of the web novel Under the Oak Tree.
I don't usually give 1 or 2 stars, but I couldn't find enough good things about this book to give at least 3. Let's pretend the story is fine, though it isn't, but if you do like that kind of story that's totally great. One thing I would like to say is: PLEASE PUT TRIGGER WARNINGS. I'm not a sensitive reader, but some are and they have the right to know in this book you have rape and violence. The MC says "no" and "stop" so many times but they are all just ignored. Being handsome and "nice" does not change the fact that this is rape. Let's talk about why this novel is not a novel. I don't know who made it into a novel from the webtoon, but it didn't work out. Maybe problems with the translation are to blame as well, but the structure alone is just so bad.
- chapters end in the middle of a conversation, and for no reason at all. No suspense, no plot twist. They end just because they HAVE TO end at a point - transitions between different scenes are not bad, because they're NOT THERE at all. We go from one scene to the next and everything is just so confusing (MC "returns" to the carriage. The guy "returns" to give her food. She eats and then "returns" back to the carriage??) - confusing actions that don't make sense physically - soooo many repetitions are strange choices of words
I won't say more. If you enjoy the story, that's awesome, but it makes me so sad to see so many 5 star reviews for a novel that can't even be called a novel. If you are interested, I suggest you go for the original webtoon.
Rating: 2.5 stars. This book completely swept me away in a way I honestly didn’t expect. There’s something so deeply vulnerable about following Maxi, this timid, stuttering girl who’s spent her whole life shrinking herself, as she’s suddenly married to Riftan, a man who loves her with this overwhelming, almost painful intensity. Their relationship is awkward and fragile at first, filled with misunderstandings and quiet longing, but that’s exactly what makes it so disgusting.
I loved the world-building so much more than the actual story or characters, which honestly felt like such a letdown. The setting was rich, immersive, and full of potential, the kind of world you just want to sink into and explore forever. But everything happening within that world? The character choices, the relationship dynamics, the emotional beats, they all fell flat compared to how stunning the backdrop was. It’s frustrating when the world feels magical, textured, and alive… but the story moving through it doesn’t live up to what it promises.

°˖➴Riftan: It makes absolutely no sense, and it honestly ruins so much of what could’ve been a beautifully soft, emotional dynamic. You give me a man who yearns, who protects, who clearly loves with his whole chest… and then you throw that trope in? For what? Shock value? Drama? Because all it does is break the trust between reader and story.
If you want him to be intense, conflicted, possessive, or emotionally closed-off, there are a hundred ways to write that without crossing a line that fundamentally changes how we see him. Turning a tender, aching romance into something tainted just feels lazy and unnecessary. It takes a character who could’ve been complex and lovable and makes him instantly harder to root for.
Honestly, it’s one of the most frustrating choices an author can make.

.✿˖🦌٠࣪⭑۶ৎ I’ve wanted to read this for a while because I needed something light, fun, and easy to read, so I grabbed it with zero expectations, it’s just a silly romance, so why not? Plus, the character art is gorgeous. Honestly, that alone made me excited to finally pick it up.
Like many, I first heard of this book from its webtoon counterpart. Though while I was reading the webtoon it seemed that the spiciness was missing. I was so surprised to find this book but also relieved. It felt like there were holes in the webtoon and the book, as it always does, was overflowing the brim.
In the beginning, the side characters were not introduced well, it was hard to tell them apart even after reading a hundred chapters. Mostly it was the knights I couldn't keep straight. Also, the magic system wasn't explained but I will spill the beans and say that it's done in Season Two. The world-building was very nice but I suggest reading the webtoon as well because it is expertly drawn.
Season one was pretty short compared to how far this story goes. I was elated to find out there were almost 300 chapters out there and cannot wait for them to be translated into English. Also if we could get actual hard copy books of them I would die happy. *begging*.... UPDATE: They are being made into books as we speak. Ahhhhhh!
Max and Rifton are it for me. One delicate, one strong. In every way they seem to be complete opposites and I honestly can't get enough. Yet, although different they share a ruined past. How do they not realize they are each other's only light in a den of darkness I will never understand. Both are so very complex and deep that I had to forgo sleep and read as much as I humanly could. And when Maxi, not used to people listening to her, started embellishing stories. I guffawed haha.
Yes, Riftan is a pompous @ss but he is under the assumption of certain things I can't divulge. Max is demure and has no backbone yet again there are reasons for these things. The two souls slowly grow together and it is breathtaking. Maxi blooms and becomes more confident and defiant. She is so stubborn and determined that there will be no limits as to what she might do. And to watch her sass the greatest knight of all time is something you want to stick around and see.
To confess I believe this series has taken me to the brink of my sanity. I am obsessed, I want to read them all this instant, I will save every piece of fanart I get my hands on, and will not stop thinking about all that I lived through while immersed in this world for at least two months maybe more....... believe me yet?
Although I love Max with the burning of a thousand suns, she made Riftan suffer endlessly with her ignorance. Actually Riftan was just as bad. But I may be too hasty in complaining about this because even though we are given over one hundred chapters in seasons 1 and 2 they are all composed within a year after Riftan's return. Still, I was so stressed that their mule-headed pride almost put me six feet under.
Oh, and forewarning you will be left with a hot and heavy cliffhanger. So don't pull out all of your hair, you'll need it for the upcoming season.
------Quotes------
Scratch marks were strewn across his neck and arms. Realizing that it was she who had created those marks, Maxi cautiously touched the angry welts. Riftan smiled faintly. “Not even the basilisk I fought gave me a scratch…” “I-I’m sorry…”
“I knew from the moment I saw you that you’d leave me covered in scars.”
“I thought you were just a feeble, demure lady when we first met, but you’re proving to be quite interesting.” “Th-That didn’t sound l-like a c-compliment!” “It was,” Ruth said, a smug smile on his face.
Content Warnings: DubCon [Riftan always initiates sex and Maxi never gives verbal consent, at times even says no, but her inner thoughts tell us she does feel desire and is aroused although she is confused by the feelings/sensations], blood/gore, child abuse, ableism, abuse, mention of rape, child neglect, isolation, and war.
When I first got back into reading manga and manhwa I downloaded the Manta Comics app on my phone and was instantly intrigued by the summary of UNDER THE OAK TREE. The app allows you to read the first 4 chapters free, with a token for one free chapter unlocking every 24hrs, or you can buy a paid membership [$3.99 per month] that allows you to read as many chapters of whatever manga/manhwa you want. I was a bit nervous to get the unlimited membership, since I have so many books I want/need to read, afraid that I’d fall down a hole and lose track of time. *Nervous laugh* So instead I read the free chapters and slowly, patiently, waited as every 24hrs I was able to read one more chapter.
Around the time I started reading into the 20th chapter, or so, an ad popped up informing me that there was a novel version that contained chapters 1-39 and it happened to be on sale for 99 cents! Of course, I wanted to continue reading the manhwa, with its gorgeous artwork, but I decided to also start reading the novel as well to see how well they lined up with each other.
I’m so happy I decided to read the novel, as well as the manhwa, as the novel gave so many more inner thoughts, history, and context to the story. While reading the Manhwa, honestly the first few times Maxi and Riftan have sex, it seems like he’s raping her because she’s saying no and her body language says she doesn’t want to participate. Reading those same scenes in the novel, [which are must steamier and graphic in description] we’re able to hear Maxi’s inner monologue which shows that although she didn’t give consent she does feel aroused and desire, she’s just so unfamiliar with those feelings she’s intimidated and nervous. The only education she was given, in regards to sex, was to lay still in order to perform her “marital duties” so she feels like the sensations she feels, and any movements she makes, during sex might deem her bad at it or inappropriate.
The novel follows right along with all the chapters of the manhwa but adds so much more information that I’m glad I decided to read both in tandem. I highly recommend reading both the online manhwa as well as the novels so that you can fully understand, and appreciate the story.
I look forward to seeing the story develop as Maxi, hopefully, is able to learn and grow in her confidence. Maxi had such a horrible time growing up with an abusive father I’m excited to see her see she’s surrounded by people who care for and respect her. I long for the time when she no longer feels less than…when she no longer feels disposable.
Okay, so I’ve been reading the manhwa and OMG, the artwork is STUNNING! Seriously, I can’t get over how beautiful it is. And the character growth? UGH, it's SO satisfying, especially in the last few volumes! It’s like, every chapter just keeps getting better and better! YET…I must say it’s definitely not without its issues.
The plot itself is intriguing, with a nice mix of romance and drama; But, honestly, Maxi’s constant self-doubt is so frustrating. I get that it's realistic, but girl...😅 can you catch a break already? There’s a lot of toxic behavior from certain characters that’s hard to ignore, especially when it comes to manipulative or controlling actions that feel straight-up uncomfortable. However, by the end, though, they showed some redeeming qualities. So who wouldn’t enjoy seeing a red flag turn green?!
Novel version or manhwa, if you're a fan of angsty romance with little fantasy elements and don’t mind yelling at your screen sometimes, this is for you. Just brace yourself for all the misunderstandings and tension between Riftan and Maxi.
DNF at 33% I just can’t. This book is awful, at this point the blatant rape and consistent uncomfortable situations is just too much for me. There are countless scenes where the main character repeatedly and clearly says no or asks him to stop and he doesn’t listen and proceeds to rape her. At 33% I don’t see any significance to this or any development of character, not that rape should be used in that way in the first place, but it’s just uncomfortable and poorly written.
I actually discovered this story from it's adaptation in Manta comics. I decided I wanted to read the original book, and found that it is by a Korean author. They offer the story on a Korean site called RidiBooks, and I've read the first book in it's entirety. The translation from Korean to English with Google Translate is a bit rough sometimes. That's why Idecided to purchase season 1 on Amazon. The translation here is great, and now it's in my Kindle library as a bonus! This is only part of the first book, but I promise Maxi and Riftian's story will suck you in. Maximilian is the daughter of a wealthy Lord, and she is married off to Riftian before he is sent off to slay a dragon. The story starts off 3 years later after the dragon campaign is complete. These two are complete strangers, and they struggle with communication. Seeing their growth throughout the story, especially Maxi's, is amazing. The author currently has the 2nd book out as well, (not sure if it's complete yet) and I can't wait to read it. I really hope she adds the rest of this story to Amazon so I can add them to my collection!
I tried the Manta app (the ads got me) and it seemed like an arranged marriage story with some fantasy. I was uncomfortable with the non-existent consent and the heroine’s passiveness, but I tried to give it a chance. Sadly, it never improves, there is no romance (several chapters when they are not in the same region), the magic system doesn’t make sense, they don’t really talk important things like “I am what I hate the most” are completely brushed aside, I couldn’t buy it. Also, the free pass doesn’t work in the most recent 15 episodes, 10 days between chapters and they have a break every 4 episodes. I don’t have patience. I uninstalled it and that was it. I have to admit that the vertical scrolling format works very well.

Maxi'nin sırrı merak ettiriyor, inşallah dandik bir sır değildir. Fantastik ögeler romantizmin bir tık gerisinde olmuş. Anatol evimiz Riftan daddymiz. Mage Ruth da çok güzel :)
Konuyu falan anlatmam, mangasına birkaç bölüm şans verin. Sararsa devam edin.
Well, I am now addicted. I decided to dive into the graphic novel prior to the written novel. Seems like it was a good decision because I am now obsessed and the thought of reading the novel has me excited.
*romantasy *longing *uncertainty *dealing with trauma
The female MC is an old cliche. Weak, unskilled, afraid, list. She spends all her time confused, shaking, and screaming. She never gets stronger mentally, physically, or emotionally. Spends all her time completely dependent on men and afraid of abuse.
The men are domineering and angry and controlling. The bedroom scenes are either dull or border on rape.
Well it took me a month to read it because I had to wait 24h to read the next chapter but without that I could’ve finish it in one sitting.
It’s an easy read, doesn’t have that much going on, you don’t have to put your mind into it and the drawings are absolutely GORGEOUS.
but if you ask me what I ve read I couldn’t tell you. I understand it’s an arranged marriage, they didn’t know each other and all so I understood at the beginning how they were acting but it just stayed the same. They didn’t talk, Riftan was protective of her but didn’t talk to her, Maxi was too scared to do something on her own due to trauma but we don’t have any evolution. I still don’t see the alchemist between them. Like every time they get in a room together they f*ck like ????? Where is the talking ? Where is the CONSENT ? Where is that ? Even riftan i can t stand him. He is too much ? All we know is he’s handsome, he has a crush on maxi but doesn’t know how to act so he become angry for nothing, doesn’t know how to communicate or smile and Maxi gosh my love I know it was hard for but go see a therapist to help you or something because you can t stay like that and this guy will not fix you.
my only complaint is that the MC is really sensitive and is always crying for no reason. This manwha is a breath of fresh air bc the Male Lead is so cute and such a gentleman since the beginning.
I have to be honest—this was one of the most unbearable reads I’ve had in a while. The pacing was excruciatingly slow, and the story felt like it was stretching out endlessly without ever going anywhere. I kept thinking that maybe I was the problem, like I just wasn’t connecting with the material, but at some point, I had to admit that it just wasn’t doing it for me. The characters didn’t feel fully developed, and the emotional depth I was expecting never really materialized. It felt like everything was being dragged out to fill space rather than to develop anything meaningful.
I’m not sure what the comic is like, but as a novel, this just didn’t work. The writing was dry, and there was little to no tension or excitement to pull me in. Maybe it works as a visual medium where the pacing and art can carry the weight of the story, but as a novel, it was a serious struggle. If you’re into stories that rely on slow-burn romance without much substance to back it up, then it might be your thing. But for me? It was just a long, drawn-out exercise in patience.
I was not expecting this to have quite so many explicit sex scenes! The story's interesting, though, and I love watching Maxi come into her own. Can't wait until her husband figures out that her father abused her...heads will (deservedly) roll.
Not rating this since it's not the webtoon entry, read until chapter 60.
I gotta say, I liked it. It's pretty much your classic, never goes out of style barbarian x princess story, but I like that it does have some depth. The webtoon is also surprisingly tame for one of these *barbarian* tropes, it's actually very fade-to-black style, so you know I'm not saying this just because I'm thirsty (but it is part of the reason bc Riftan is oomf).
Anyways, the characters are basic and their relationship can be a bit codependent / toxic at times, but I like that the author shows these patterns of behavior as part of their trauma and not something actually good or desirable. They also genuinely try to communicate, but of course their insecurities come back because 1) one of them is a man 2) one of them is a woman living in medievalesque patriarchy.
I can see the kernels of self-growth, especially in our main character, and it's great to follow her in this journey. I do have a soft spot in my heart for other messy, insecure bitches with daddy issues like myself. In any case, this is all genuinely heart-wrenching, angst-inducing and all the other good stuff.
The art is really beautiful, I have to say that as well, and I'm a big stan of the cold, emotionless wizard guy whose name I forgot bc I binged this toon until 6 in the morning about a week ago.
I can say that I'm probably going to get annoyed waiting for the updates just bc the plot is so slow and elaborate, but it was great while I could binge it, and hopefully I'll get to read all of it in one go once it's finished.
read up to season 2 I'm ashamed to admit that I went into this manhwa blind just because I listened to the ost by Ailee and Cha eunwoo... honestly I don't get the hype... I came on Goodreads to give this one star just to become more appalled at the raving reviews. it's like I read a different story all together. I mean ig the art is pretty, the world building was good and I could somewhat grasp why people might like this sort of thing but it just wasn't for me. I became increasingly frustrated at the characters. safe to say I won't be reading season 3. I don't even wanna list all the things wrong with this and just good riddance!
OMFGGBFFR I AM OBSESSED! Her hot, her sweet shyness. God the only thing is I wish she would open up and let her husband know about the abuse she received be her family. I get we will eventually get there and it’s only the first season but omg he is so sweet and he also is holding secrets. I see you staying in the tower and telling her not to go there. I know you’re hiding something riftan! This is such a sweet beautiful story and I think everyone should read this! It’s perfect! I love it and I’m so thankful for my reading group that recommended this story to me!!
