Black Dahlia

Rate this book
A year and a half ago, Mercedes Holmes and Raul Santiago shared an explosive encounter that ended abruptly. Since then, Mercedes has gone out of her way to keep both her emotional and physical distance from the sexy and charming Brazilian. Now, however, the full-time assistant principal and part-time burlesque dancer finds herself in need of Raul’s security services.

Raul Santiago is the consummate ladies’ man. He’s wealthy, sexy-as-sin, and just dangerous enough to put himself between the woman he’s had his eye on for more than a year and the stranger stalking her. When Raul finds himself not only offering Mercedes his professional services, but opening up his home to her, the undeniable chemistry between the two becomes irresistible. Over the course of one busy, burlesque performance-filled summer, Raul fights to break down Mercedes’ emotional walls, and stop whoever it is that is threatening Mercedes’ life.

Queirda Indeed!

I really enjoyed Raul and Mercedes story. It explained a lot about her. I live the multicultural dynamic of these families. Looking forward to Andre's story! Hint hint!! He will be the hardest to give in to love I suppose.

Decent read. Raul was hot and to know he was Brazilian made him even more hot. Mercedes had a lot of baggage but Raul didn't give up on showing her love conquers all. I wanted Dwayne to suffer like Marcus did in book 1 but oh well I guess. Cant wait to read book 3 to see what happens to Andre.

Some times its hard to follow up behind the first book that came out of the gate to become a smashing success but author Tiffany Patterson had no problem writing the second equally successful as the first.

Raul Santiago is best friends with Nikolai Collins, the two met at West Point, served in the military together and their mothers serve as the other. Although not blood related they are brothers all the same so it was a no brainer that Raul would serve as best man for Nikolai when he got married. Raul eyes have been fastened to the bride's best friend Mercedes Holmes through the wedding and the reception, so after flirting with each other, they decide to take it back to his hotel room. Only his hotel room was occupied and a big misunderstanding ensued, resulting in Raul and Mercedes not speaking for over a year. But they can't stay away from each other because they are both the godparents to Nikolai and Devyn's twin boys.

Mercedes Holmes is an assistant principal and a burlesque dancer, her love for teaching rivals her love for dance, dance maybe more. She doesn't do committed relationships, flings yes, love no. After growing up in a household where she watched her preacher father have multiple affairs on his wife, she vowed that love will never get a hold of her. Sure she is happy for other people when they love but that is not for her. Besides Raul is still a bee in her bonnet and she can't seem to shake him or the way he made her feel before the fall out. But what she believed about Raul Mercedes now believes it was false, the misunderstanding had been cleared up by her best friend Devyn, now she feels the need to apologize but before she can do that, the person who was calling and hanging up on her, has now stepped up their game by violently destroying her home.

Security Expert and Business owner Raul Santiago has been called in by his best friend Nikolai, his wife and children were with Mercedes when they came upon the destroyed home and he wasn't taking any chances where his family is concerned. Raul is glad that Nikolai called him, now Mercedes will find out what it is he does best and that is providing the highest security possible for his clients. Raul also has another agenda and that is to break down Mercedes defenses to let him in because truth be told, he has never met a woman like her, sure he has had plenty of women but Mercedes makes his heart race.

Also his mother and Nikolai's mother are quietly scheming behind the scenes to get him married off, like they did Nikolai. But before any of that can come to pass, Raul has to race against time by getting ahead of Mercedes stalker because he now knows that the next step on the stalker's agenda is murder and he will not allow anyone or anything to take Mercedes away from him.

I enjoyed learning about more Black Burlesque dancers, its always exciting to know that Black Women were also prominent in the Burlesque world. I know I am definitely going to look these women up.

Well Until My Next Review...Ciao Bellas!

This story is as good as the first book! Excellent sequel.

I choose this ratings as I found the story kept me reading. Intriguing tale of Mercedes and Raul, I liked the characters a lot and I loved t hat Devyn and Nickola made appearances in this story too, making you get to know all the characters and the family dynamics. I'm looking forward to Andres story as the scene was set in the last pages of this book. An entertaining read and perfect sequel to the first book Black Pearl well worth the read, well done Tiffany Patterson looking forward to your next book in the series!!

This is book 2 in the (Burlesque Series) Mercedes Holmes and Raul Santiago's story.

Although I enjoyed reading Mercedes and Raul's story it was not as romantic or riveting for me as book 1. I would have like to have seen a lot more time spent on the couple getting to know each other. Raul was a caring, loving, patient man waiting for Mercedes to acknowledge how she felt about him. I loved that about him.

A nice gentle love story!

And your stalker is........

I love a good love/psycho stalker story. This story is about Mercedes and Raul. Mercedes has someone stalker her and Raul is the sexy ass Brazilian to the rescue. Try as she might, you can't fight attraction. Truth be told I had already figured out who her stalker was. Let's just say the elevator didn't reach the top floor. Hell it barely left the basement. Mercedes father, takes delusional to a whole different level. This was a good book. I'm looking forward to the next one.

I liked the first book to this series more than this follow up. It felt a bit drawn out in places, especially with the stalker aspect, but Raul and Mercedes had good chemistry.

Black Dahlia was an entertaining book. I’m a firm believer in the saying “there is a time and place for everything” And that saying is 100% accurate for this book and books like it. I have to be in the mood to read books that are heavy on the passion and romance and not so generous with complex characters or plot lines. That’s not a knock against this book or books like it but I would be lying if I said I didn’t see every “twist and turn” this book had to offer.

With that being said, I did enjoy it. I enjoyed seeing Raul and Mercedes get to know one another and in turn finding out more about themselves in the process. Raul and Mercedes are the best friends of Nikola and Devyn who were the main characters in the previous book, Black Pearle.

In a way, they’re kind of the polar opposites of their besties. Nikola is a take charge, aggressive, borderline possessive, alpha male. While Raul is compassionate, sweet, assertive and protective. Devyn is on the demure and shy side, it took her some time to find herself and gain confidence. While Mercedes is free, vivacious and oozes confidence. It was interesting seeing not only the difference between the couples but also how the dichotomy between Raul and Mercedes would affect the progression of their relationship.

I believe there is a third book in this series which I do intend to read…however the time and place for reading this kind of book has passed for now and while I appreciate what Black Pearle and Tiffany Patterson had to offer, I’m looking for a bit MORE in the next book I read. The thing about my reading moods though, is they change QUICKLY…So who knows…I might be reading the next Black Burlesque book sooner than I think.

If you need a quick and easy read to tide you over until your next heartbreaking adventure…this is definitely a book you should consider giving a shot.

People in glass houses should not throw rocks.

Mercedes Holmes' most righteous reverend father Dwayne Holmes threw rocks at Mercedes since She was a child, spewing his righteous biblical epithets at her and leave home to do his dirt. It was This childhood she experienced that caused her not to ever fall in love it she would be treated like her long suffering loyal mother. It could not be her. Dancing burlesque have her a since of control and self price that she loved. It was not until she had trouble with the stalker that she needed help and protection. To her rescue comes handsome Brazilian playboy Raul Santiago. There previous attempts at a book up was a total failure and Cedes was determined to stay away from him seeing the potential of his totally turning her world upside down. Raul was determined to solve her stalker problem and stay close to her. With in close proximity to each other 24/ 7, feelings started getting serious.

Mercedes always kept her feelings and relationship about her parents to herself but Raul was determined to leave no stone unturned to figure out who the stalker was. As clues were revealed, I kind of figure out who the stalker would be but not exactly who it turned out to be.

Tiffany wrote a very well research suspenseful romantic mystery. I enjoyed reading about the similar rich culture of Brazil and New Orleans. The history of Capoeira and the maroon Quilombos was very interesting. The similarity of Candomble of Brazil and Voodoo in New Orleans both grew out a society's combination of West African religions and beliefs with Christianity. As a reader from South Louisiana, I can appreciate the authenticity of the author's story. I was glad to read that Mercedes finally gave her father a piece of her mind and that her mother grew a pair and left his hypocritical azz. Great story Tiffany. I loved it.

This is technically not a BW/WM romance because Raul is mixed Afro-Brazilian/European/Indigenous. However, this is still a pretty decent story. I like him with Mercedes, although this is not as hot of a story as Nikola and Devyn's in Book 1, but it's still pretty good and you've got a mystery stalker backstory going on with this book as well. I thought this story was cool because it sort of answered my question how a vice principal of an elementary school can get away with performing burlesque and not get in trouble with her school administration and the parents. I would think you couldn't do both, although burlesque isn't necessarily stripping, but it's close. Anyway, Black Dahlia is an enjoyable read and we also get updates on how Nikola and Devyn are doing with their married life and kids as well. Enjoy!

Love and Security

I loved the follow up to Black Pearl and how it incorporated the chemistry and characters into this book. I'm glad that Raul showed Mercedes that she could let her guards down with him and that she could trust him with her heart and life. I love the vulnerability of both and how they felled for each other by engaging in simple things.

Another fab story. Raul and Mercedes. What a great couple. I was heartedly cheering for them. I also didn't see the twist to the story. I don't want to give it away. Let's just say they are deliriously happy. Now about Andre...

I'm glad I didn't put off reading Raul and Mercedes' book - based on Nikola and Devyn's book it kinda seemed like they'd be enemies to lovers ...
BUT that wasn't REALLY the case. I mean - it kinda was; but thankfully the book doesn't focus on it - it starts with them ... and what caused the friction - a big misunderstanding ... and then we get to the rest of it.

I liked that they were so smitten from the first BUT that the relationship develops organically and naturally - while they're in their feelings they don't RUSH into declarations and such.

I also realized [I mean, I was spoilerized because I read Chanel and Xavier's books first ... but also like - it was kinda obvious who the "baddie" was from the start because the scene shoe horned in there for ~no reason - OTHER than to of course be "the baddie."]

I just ... oof. Mercedes's dad. I'm SO glad Mercedes finally stood up to him - and that she's finally got a better relationship with her mom by the end. I liked that her brother has always been supportive - AND ALSO that he apologizes for not ENTIRELY having her back/not doing ENOUGH before. [This was also something I liked/appreciated with Chanel's book/Jason.]

I LOVE that Mercedes has a good friend in Devyn, that Raul and Nikola are best friends ... that the guys MOMS are best friends ...

This book was hot - but I found Nikola and Devyn's book sexier [Chanel's and Xavier's too...]

I liked that Mercedes was more adventurous/ not a timid shy one ... Also that she'd had a lot of previous romances - and there wasn't the slut shaming [other than from her awful pointless dad] - I ALSO liked that Mercedes stood up to the school officials.
And how taken with her Raul is - and that he lets her be her own person/only curtails things that TRULY would be a risk to her.

Did NOT like how he keeps some things from her - which ... I guess I'm torn like - she ought to know because she needs to realize just how serious everything is ... but then also there's no reason to EXTRA distress her for no reason ...

Raul is so sweet <3
I really liked these two <3

Definitely a solid C

This book is good, but because I am not a fan of third person narrative, I could not give it a five star rating. This story starts out with a bang and keeps you wondering who is the culprit! The stakes are high, the risks are higher, and the chances are more fatal. Mercedes Holmes is a beautiful Black independent woman who is stubborn, BFF of Devyn Collins, she has lived her life the way she wanted it—instead of thinking of the disparagements that her hypocritical preacher father would say to her—she is her own woman, few friends, no husband, no love life, and that is the way she is inclined to live it. Mercedes is an assistant principal during the day, but in the evenings while not at work, she loves dancing burlesque—as Black Dahlia—she could lose herself while dancing, she is very good at it, and she is always in control. Raul Santiago is a billionaire Brazilian who is very handsome, charismatic, playboy, sexy, and best friends with Nikola Collins. Raul is a security expert who owns his own security company. At the wedding of Nikola and Devyn, Raul and Mercedes thought they would have a rendezvous, but it was thwarted when a woman was waiting in Raul’s hotel room. When Mercedes received several hangup calls and a threatening note from a stalker, Nikola asked for Raul’s assistance. The explosive attraction between Raul and Mercedes is unparalleled. The chance of a romance between Raul and Mercedes proves to be difficult when threats arise at every turn, and exposing the stalker behind the plot seems impossible, but Raul will do everything he can to protect Mercedes. When you think you have it all figured out, then BAM, another curveball is thrown at you. When an incident happens to Mercedes and she is put into danger, Raul and his security team come together to find the person/persons responsible. Why is Mercedes’s life in danger? Who wants Mercedes dead and to sabotage her life? And will Raul be able to get to her in time? What happens next? Well, read the story to find out!

Raul and Mercedes have an instant attraction to each other but due to a misunderstanding, they dance around the attraction for almost two years. Then Mercedes needs Raul's expertise to help her with a life-threatening situation.

I liked Raul and Mercedes, but they were not as cute as Nikola and Devyn in the first novel of this series. Both have experienced some deep emotional wounds that impact how they interact with eachother. The chemistry was good between them, but I felt the flirtation was flat and not as enticing as it was between Nikola and Devyn. The action was way better in this novel than in the first. Although Raul is just as macho/alpha as Nikola, it did not come off that way because of the situation that Raul and Mercedes were dealing with. Hopefully we will see more of the couples in other novels.

Raul and Mercedes

I was hooked from the first sentence. Raul and Mercedes chemistry was evident from the beginning. I felt bad for Mercedes. Having somene stalk you and try to ruin your life for no apparent reason has to be a very traumatic experience. I'm proud of Cedes mom for finally growing a pair. That father of hers needs to go back to theology school and visit his prayer corner more often so he can get a better understanding of what it truly means to be a man of the cloth. Because he was way off. I love Mama Iris she's going to make sure all her boys find true love. Andre better watch out because he's the last man standing. I had guessed early on on who the stalker might be and I was right but I was way off as to why said person hated Cedes so much. #reccommend

Cute!

So, it seems this was one of Tiffany’s beginning novels. I definitely can see the growth in her work, comparing it to her latest novels. Since I began this series in the middle, I know what transpired with Devyn. But of course that won’t stop me from actually reading it🤷🏾‍♀️😂.

Overall, I think my title of the review summarizes my thoughts on this one. It was cute! Having read Jamal’s story (one of my favs BTW), I knew who was behind the stalking. But it didn’t ruin the story for me; a gift Tiffany has. No matter if I’m reading her series out of order. She writes so well, I don’t care. I still want to experience the story.

So while I didn’t LOVE this one, I enjoyed it and plan to read the entire series.

Unexpected outcome

I was very pleased with the unexpected outcome of this book after reading the first book of this series I started this one immediately. All throughout the book I would try to predict the assailant as I always do when reading. I was pleasantly surprised by not being able to nail it down to early. As I read more and more, my suspects we cancelled out one by one and give my the reasons for why they were taken out of the running. I did not see the true culprit until it was time to see it which I love. Brilliant writing!! On to book 3!!!!

Content Warnings: sexual content, violence, stalking, and emotional abuse.
Mention of: infidelity, emotional abuse, loss of loved one

I loved getting to know Mercedes and Raul more. Although I didn't guess the why of it I definitely knew who the stalker was from the start so it felt a bit frustrating waiting for them to realize it 😅 I also felt like the ending was a little rushed, I think we could have spent a little more time there instead of jumping to the epilogue.

Overall a fun read and I look forward to diving into book 3.

Why do children have to beat the brunt of a hypocritical parents action? This was the summary of Mercedes' story, of course it was nice that Rahul swopped in to be her knight in shinning armour.
Everything felt pretty convenient for these two to be honest but the chemistry and total dedication to eachother especially from Rahul can not be denied.

Moral of the story, never lose your self respect and try to stay in a toxic marriage for appearances or the kids, you will. only be aiding an absolute mess and traumatizing yourself and kids.
Fuck Mercedes father for real.

Love this couple

They were fun and there was just enough suspense to keep it interesting. Even though I started I. The middle of the series, it was great. Reading Black Butterfly next and the. Probably Black Pearl since this bunch is so interesting. I was hesitant about this series and I should not have been. As always, Ms. Patterson’s Hey name! Thanks so much for peeking at my stories. I really appreciate you! Are you just being a cheerleader or are you interested in what I am doing? Are rich and will have you feeling all the emotions.

Raul made me fall in love with him right along with Mercedes.

I just knew that this book was going to take me for a ride when I read this. I love that no matter what was happening Raul was there for her. There was some scary moments, moments that I didn't see coming but definitely worth the read even with the mistakes that were throughout the book. Can't wait to see the next book.

Excellent

I love, loved this book. There is a twist and turn not revealed until the end. You will be very surprised. The storyline is different and exciting and also educational in the I did not know about Black Burlesque existence. The characters are beautiful, strong and sexy and the lovemaking is intense and off the chart. You will also the beautiful friendship dynamic. This book is fast moving. Overall an interesting and outstanding read.

fun read but I HATE the way it was written.

I’ve read other books from this author and absolutely adored them but the writing style of this series made it incredibly difficult to enjoy this story or even get through the books. Thankfully it seems the author has changed her writing style since so I will be reading her newer books but the third person writing and the constant back and forth made things difficult and irritated sometimes.

While I enjoyed the story I couldn't connect with Raul and Mercedes as a couple. There was sexul chemistry but it wasn't off the charts hot like Nikolaend Devyn. Mercedes annoyed me a little bit. Raul isn't as alpha as Nikola a that kind of out me off. Didn't find him as sexy. I'm enjoying the series as a whole.

Okay...this was good...but...

This was good...but I felt it was a bit slower than Devyn and Nikola's story. Andre and Stacey's story was also better somehow. Glad not much else came of Mercede's romance life with women. I believe that is where I was a bit puzzled. Otherwise a great story line.

This was really good! I am glad that Mercedes and Raul got their HEA! Also, it was a treat to see that Mercedes' double-standard preacher father got his just desserts! Her mother got her back-bone and left his lying butt! This had a crazy ending (with the reveal) in regards as to who her stalker was! Great story!

I glad to see a book about Raul.

I like Raul in the book "Black Pearl" so I enjoy this one very much. I figure out who the person was and why two-thirds into the book after learning about her father. Cannot wait to read the next book.

Ok read

Though I finished the book it wasn't my favorite Tiffany Patterson book. For a while the story as too slow then suddenly everything was happening. I'll still read the 3rd installation of the series I just hopes it's as good as Black Pearl.

Great

This book was just as interesting as the first. Entertaining from the first to the last page. Raul is my kind of man; honest, loving and more. Mercedes 's father was the biggest hypocrite. A must read.
