Jessica is attractive, exuberant, nymphomaniac. While she is having sex with a cool guy just known, her husband Horace comes home. And so far, nothing original: an ordinary matter of hormones. She dresses quickly and runs to meet Horace to avoid the worst, convincing him to take a walk. The problem is that her lover in panic, instead of escaping, hides in the closet, gets stuck for the faulty lock and dies choked. The same night, while he’s robbing her apartment, Bozo opens the closet door and the naked corpse collapses on him. He faints, Jessica is awakened by the noise and is shocked. She has no choice: she must make the corpse and the fainted thief disappear, before Horace wakes up. Too bad she asks the wrong people for help.
Gero Mannella is born in the shadow of the Royal Palace of Caserta in the radiant ‘60ies. In the ‘70ies he moves to the sun and begins to play with the words. In the ‘90ies he’s finalist at the Italo Calvino Award. During the award ceremony he sits behind the great philosopher Norberto Bobbio, is impressed by his huge earlobes and tries to measure them with a pen. Unfortunately the pen is lost falling into the philosopher's ear, and he is expelled from the final. The trauma causes him an epithelial dyslexia, from which his novels arise.
Inspector Clouseau meets Detective Montalbano. Mr. Mannella describes his book as slapstick, of which it certainly contains a great deal, but at its best it’s a very good work of humorous, surreal absurdity, which I enjoy greatly. I had a bit of trouble getting into the novel at the beginning but quickly found myself adapting to the author’s style and slightly quirky translation. It was worth the work as I ended up truly enjoying the novel and looking forward to more from Gero Mannella.
I rather enjoyed this book. Gero Manella writes scenes with the comic absurdity and transitions of a Monty Python skit and the humorous narration of Terry Pratchett. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys comedy.
A slap stick comedy with a very unique casts of characters, each with their own odd personality. You will keep reading just to see what will happen next.
This was a fun caper about incompetent thieves and cops with some blackmail and promiscuousness. The actual crimes and plot aren't really that important to the novel, at least I didn't think so. It was a mashup of Blake Edwards and dad jokes, consistently amusing if not utterly hilarious. I enjoyed Mannella's writing style: brisk, insouciant, and a little absurd.
🔪A very well written piece that is a perfect blend of thriller, suspense, humour and a bunch of twisted people.
🔪The book has fluid language and loved the dialogue delivery happening between all the characters and supporting characters in the novel. A light read i must say and how often does it happen that a person dies of chocking in a cupboard while making out?
🔪The novel starts with Jessica who was with her lover right at that time her husband comes home. She dresses quickly and runs to meet him to avoid the worst, convincing him to take a walk.in the mean time, the lover hides in the cupboard to avoid any unpleasant encounters with the husband. What are the chances, on the same night a thief decides to rob Jessica’s apartment and faints after seeing a headless corpse? With this Jessica is awake and it is her headache to get rid of the lover’s body as well as the fainted thief.
🔪How will Jessica explain all this to her husband? Who will be willing to help Jessica come out of this mess and clear her name of all the troubles? Read the book to find out more!
🔪The writing is fluid with a lot of humour hidden in like each sentence I must say. I finished it in 2 sittings at most. Loved the structure and the way it ended.
🔪I would recommend this to everyone out there who is looking for a mix of thriller and humour. The names of the characters are a little handful and it is difficult to keep track of them by the time we reach the end.
🛑 Not recommended for children as it has some disturbing/profound language.
I'm not entirely sure what to think of this one, an absurdist crime story that's funny and strange. It's raunchier than I prefer (in the name of silliness), but it does make for a fun read.
I did not expect such a delightful, entertaining and interesting story but this author captures my imagination like a sumptuous gelato! There are surprises, intrigue and humour and wonderfully crafted characters.
