Silver Knowledge

Rate this book
When his father died Errol expected nothing, given how strained their relationship was. Apparently, there was one final gift waiting in the a silver pen in a tiny, black casket. It seemed ordinary, without inscriptions or signs of wear. Everything seemed normal until it started writing on its own. The ink flowing like blood.

Not every story leaves me pondering this much after the fact.
Errol is great,
he is the kind of person a story that I wish could be friends with in real life.

If you're someone who loves lore, this is for you. There is the obvious lore staring you in the face and than there's the stuff in the background making you examine detail closely and if your like me you normally go back a few pages because maybe you zoned out while reading the words or you simply don't remember. Not the case here for me this time. This time I went back purely for a closer look at the detail.

The world itself feels familiar, but different. Makes me think of Edward Scissor Hands and Nicolos Flamel. Not because of the name but because of the character himself.

Unlike most stories, especially short ones certain concerns I had were answered, redeeming certain doubts.

A character does not even have an actual scene and they are my favorite character. How does that work?

I was given the chance to read this short story early thanks to Emilie sending it over, so this is what I thought of the story.
The second that you start reading it is almost certain that you are going to be intrigued into where the story is going to go as it is just that interesting. The idea that a pen is able to write on its own and what it does write makes you just want to know more.
The darkness in this - for me - is perfect, it gives you that nice little chill while reading it as you just want to see what else the author is going to bring.
Storytelling itself was perfect, I have liked Emilie's writing for some time now, and each new piece I read from her just seems to get better and better.
With the story being 30 pages I think it is a great way for people to be able to get to know more about how Emilie writes and after reading this will make people want to pick up her books.

As someone who doesn't read this genre I was actually surprised at how much I liked it. I felt like this story was more of a mystery then horror as I had lots of questions about the pen and Erolls father but I only had these questions because I was interested in the story. It's a short story so it shouldn't take long to get through and if you never read any of Emilie's works before I think this is a great place to start. Even if you have aphantasia and can't really imagine anything like me, I still found this book to be an easy read.
