Returning to her hometown was the last thing Brianna Goodwin wanted to do. She and her mom had left Flower Hills under a cloud of secrecy and shame when she was ten years old. Her life is different now. She has a high-powered career, a beautiful girlfriend, and a trendy life in Chicago.
Upon her estranged father’s death, she reluctantly agrees to attend the reading of his will. It should be simple—settle his estate and return to her life in the city—but nothing has ever been simple when it comes to Donald Goodwin.
Dani Thorton, the down-to-earth manager of Thundering Pines, is confused when she’s asked to attend the reading of the will of her longtime employer. She fears that her simple, although secluded life will be interrupted by the stylish daughter who breezes into town.
When a bombshell is revealed at the meeting, two women seemingly so different are thrust together. Maybe they’ll discover they have more in common than they think.
Rita Potter has spent most of her life trying to figure out what makes people tick. To that end, she holds a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work and an MA in Sociology. Her favorite pastime is crawling around inside peoples’ brains. Her loved ones are grateful that she now has characters whose minds she can explore, so maybe she’ll stay out of theirs.
Rita’s writing reflects her belief that in some way we are all damaged and must conquer our demons in order to create a fulfilling life. Being an eternal optimist, she maintains that the human spirit is remarkably resilient and can overcome even the most challenging obstacles. That optimism is the wellspring of her life goal- to provide encouragement and support to help people thrive.
In her spare time, she enjoys the outdoors. She is especially drawn to the water, which is ironic since she lives in the middle of a corn field. Her first love has always been reading, which has spurred her writing. She rides a Harley Davidson and has an unnatural obsession with fantasy football. More than anything she detests small talk, but can ramble on for hours given a topic that interests her.
She lives in a small town in Illinois with her wife, Terra, and their cat, Chumley, who actually runs the household.
Rita is a member of American Mensa and the Golden Crown Literary Society. She is currently a student of the GCLS Writing Academy 2021.
**'When certain premise cause commotion of the mind of readers, whether good or bad. It's that commotion that writers want as a response to their storytelling..'
3.5stars! A surprisingly enjoyable story. And a recommended book!
Ridiculously and overly dramatic, to me. So much soap opera drama that hit every cliche in the lesbian fiction handbook. I wanted to like it, but the constant barrage of outrageous happenings (and responses) beat me down.
I don't know what I was thinking when I DNF-d this a year ago.
I stumbled upon Holiday Hostage a few days ago and I've been obsessed with this author ever since. Thundering Pines is the third book I've devoured by Rita Potter in 1 week, and I can't get enough of her stories. Her books are diverse, and she doesn't recycle plots, but her works are always tightly written; her stories are layered, characters are multi-dimensional, the connection between MCs are palpable and progress organically, and the dialogues(!) - the dialogues are so crisp and laden with humor. This one is going into my fave pile too, and all I want to do for the next few days is bury my nose in all of this author's books.
I was totally excited for this book after I loved Broken Not Shattered and the first two books in the As We Know it series (which reminds me that I’m still not so patiently waiting for the third book in the series… 😆). Especially because I know that this is the book Rita had Jae as her mentor.
And what can I say I didn’t get disappointed at all. At first sight you would think that Dani and Brianna are totally different. But the longer the story goes on the more you see all the things they have in common, which is actually a lot.
But first about the beginning of the book. When city girl Brianna inherits the campground Thundering Pines from her deceased and estranged father, her only thought is to sell it as soon as possible. But her father had other plans and connected it with the condition that she can only sell it 6 months later. This also means having to work together with Dani, who also was mentioned in the will of Brianna’s father.
As soon as they start working and spending more time together there is this connection. They have such a wonderful chemistry and most of all so much fun together. I loved their banters and their bickering. Their friendship deepens the more time they spend together. What both didn’t except and didn’t want are their growing feelings toward each other. That Brianna has a girlfriend in the city and Dani doesn’t want a relationship are only two reason they fight against their feelings. And as much as I loved them both, during some moments I was reminded of Rita’s first book (Broken Not Shattered) where I needed lots of patience. While there it was mostly because of one character I needed my patience for, this time it was actually because of both. 😆
There were so many things I loved in this story besides the great story and learning things about nature and wood…. 😆 Rita was also able to create characters with so much depths. Layers were revealed step by step, that helped me to understand the actions of the characters better. Rita was also able to take away my disappointment I felt at some point because of something Brianna did. We learn later in the book more about it, that helped me to understand and letting go. We also get to see some wonderful side characters like Dani‘s aunt, Molly who is Brianna’s best friend from childhood and Carl (read the book, then you know who he is 😆). And we have some very interesting and intriguing characters like Brianna’s half sister Shelby and Brianna’s girlfriend Caroline. Both characters I disliked very much at first.
I don’t wanna prolong this review any longer, because I think you should read this book instead. It’s another wonderful slow-burn romance that I enjoyed very much. And before I forget to mention it, I definitely noticed the improvement Rita did in her writing. Well done. I will patiently waiting now for her next book… ☺️
I received an advance reader copy from the author and voluntarily leaving a review.
2 stars This was definitely not the best thing I've read lately. A lot of drama, which got either solved weirdly quickly, or just plain weirdly. Characters with more baggage than a north pole expedition who should get a therapist instead of a romantic partner. And weirdly manipulative family members of the MCs, who were somehow both well known for being dicks and still well regarded by the community. There were way too many things there that rubbed me the wrong way. But the writing wasn't that bad and the premise, while a bit unoriginal, was fairly decent as well. Apparently I'm an outlier, so it's possible you may like it better than me, but I was seriously unimpressed
Brianna Goodwin and Dani Thornton find themselves running a campground together after Brianna’s estranged father leaves it to her in his will. On the surface the two women are polar opposites, the high powered attorney and the small town campground worker but appearances aren’t always what they seem.
Rita Potter did a great job of developing these characters and making them appealing and at times, frustrating. Brianna and Dani are both broken characters who have let the past affect their present and they have to change a lot about their way of thinking to be able to not let it destroy their future. Brianna has surrounded herself with people so devoid of depth and character meeting someone like Dani throws her for a loop. Dani is kind, honest and doesn’t put on airs, she is just authentically herself. She is a breath of fresh air for Brianna and someone she can talk to. The two women share their stories with each other in a way they haven’t with anyone else.
Brianna and Dani are wonderful characters. I want them to figure out their shit and allow themselves to put the past behind them and find happiness. I also, at times, want to shake them both. There was a lot of indecisiveness from both of them as to what the nature of their relationship should be. The connection they develop becomes a friendship unlike they have ever had with anyone and feelings develop that scare them both. Brianna is in a long term relationship with Caroline, who is pretentious and overly concerned with appearances. Being back in Flower Hills, surrounded by genuine people like Molly, Brianna’s childhood friend, Dani and her Aunt Helen, she begins to see how superficial her life has become.
This is a very well written book. It dragged a bit in the middle of the story and I think it could have been a bit shorter. That’s really the only complaint I have about. Rita Potter does a wonderful job of developing her characters and I look forward to reading more of her books. I encourage you to do the same.
Brianna returns to her hometown for the reading of her estranged fathers will. We are introduced to the family dynamic, along with Dani who has been managing the campground. There is a lot to unpack over the first few chapters but Potter does a great job at developing these characters.
Dani and Brianna developed a wonderful friendship over time that was underlying in real feelings neither of them wanted to admit.
Let’s not forget Caroline, Brianna’s girlfriend. You just cannot like Caroline. She’s a piece of work.
My favorite line in the book was when Dani told Brianna she opened her up and made her feel.
Dani and Brianna loved each other so much, but their pain was in the way. Dani’s Aunt Helen was a wonderful support character in the story , she could see right through Dani .
Side note: I loved the last conversation between Brianna and Caroline. They were finally able to be honest about the relationship between them for all those years. Brianna was able to tell her to go to the woman she really loved Kylie. And this is where Caroline becomes somewhat likable.
This was a story about healing. Both main characters had by hurt by their parents choices. They carried around years of pain and trauma. At the end of the book, I was wondering if the two of them would make it.
I would like to thank the author Rita Potter for the arc ! The book was fantastic! 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I found this book so very realistic in the way characters conduct their life and relationships. It could be talking about any one of us.
I supremely commend the character development and the relationship development. It's not as much a slow-burn as a "real life burn". It's really well done. I read this long stuff in less that a day. VERY very engaging.
The one bone I've got to pick is regarding Caroline's arc. I just wish she'd ended up being as much Caroline as she'd started in the book -- and I say this because I don't want to spoil it for anyone that plans to read it. One thing is true, though: Caroline is the way she is but Brianna let her and upheld her. Which reinforces my belief this book is awesome when it comes to reflecting REAL LIFE.
I enjoyed this book especially the interactions of Bri and Dani at Thindering Pines. The growth of their friendship and dialogue between the two were really great. Throw in Aunt Helen and it's a party. The hurdles they had to cross seemed to add another layer to their relationship but I did feel those were lacking a bit. The incident with Shelby and her cousins, for instance, happened, and then there was nothing. Resolution either didn't happen on page or happened so quick it felt like nothing. Regardless, the story was a good one and enjoyed every minute of it wanting more, which I guess is a good sign for a book, at least this one.
A true hidden gem: a ride of emotions, accepting your true self when love knocks at your door
Dani Thorton, the manager of the campsite Thundering Pines based in Flower Hills is facing a dilemma. The owner of the camp has just passed away and, to her surprise, she’s been invited to the reading of his will, where also his daughters, Brianna and Shelby will be present. Dani’s, Brianna’s and Shelby’s lives will never be the same after the reading of the will and their destiny will slowly intertwine and develop into a series of conflicts and soul baring revelations.
I was recommended this book a couple of days ago, when I had asked a question in a group. I wanted to read something that would surprise me, a slow burn with well-developed characters, drama, passion, banter, atmosphere building, great settings, and chemistry. Thundering Pines has satisfied all these wishes and went beyond that. It made me fall in love, literally giving me goosebumps and a warm funny feeling in my heart and a glow on my face.
The building of the friendship between Dani and Brianna is so heartfelt, it makes you crave that type of connection with another person. Someone who you can literally pour your soul into and don’t fear judgement. Someone you can rely on. Someone that doesn’t make you feel alone in this world. Someone you share the highest type of intimacy there is. A type of love that starts with the mind and not the body. And when the body starts following the mind, the attraction becomes irresistible, almost tormenting your soul. It’s the continuous thunder announcing the storm of your emotions. It’s the lightning casting finally a light on the past you’ve already tried to run away from. The characters of Thundering Pines have a past that weighs heavily on their consciences. Everything they have become is rooted in what happened before, in their upbringing, in their family history.
Don’t they always say that the faults of the parents always fall on the children?
Shakespeare once said: “the voice of parent is the voice of gods, for to their children they are heaven's lieutenants
How real does this feel? How long does it take for one person to free themselves from the prison they created, because of their parents?
Let the children be children, and let the adults never lose that playfulness and that innocence.
So Dani and Brianna re-discover that life can also be fun, that you can let yourself go and enjoy the small moments, the beauty of Nature, the roaring of the water, the immensity of the storm, the simple life.
But adult life is never that easy, it is?
Responsibilities, empty relationships, secrets, jealousy, work, money, society etiquettes, duties. For how long can you run from your past before it catches up with you and tries to drown you in sorrow and self-destruction?
If you are up for an emotional ride with one of the biggest rewards you could ever have as a reader, you really need to give this book a chance.
Let your mind be transported to the wonders of Nature and inhale the scent of the trees in spring, the heavy drops of rain on the earth, smell of fire popping while making s’mores.
Remember the inner child in you and love that child in order to accept yourself and grow, becoming who you always wanted to be, but never dared to.
Read a story about friendship, family, city life vs country life.
You will hear the thunder, you will hear the waters raging, you will hear your heart beating out of your chest cheering for all the characters, for them to find peace and joy. You’ll meet a lonely and overthinking country girl, a city girl who lost touch with herself, a funny and caring auntie, and many other characters that will make you giggle, laugh out loud, be angry, sad, and worried, but most of all they will make you awe and fall in love with them and their second chances at life. Fall in love with Thundering Pines. I have.
You are yourself. What your parents are and what they have done, doesn’t define you. You are you, as beautifully complicated as you can be. Love yourself and let the others love you the way you are.
You are not broken. All the pieces of you are whole gold mine in the eyes of someone who cares.
Look for those meaningfull people who are not afraid of talking deep and share yourself.
Your struggles might be their struggles.
Find someone that makes you want to be silly and at the same time serious.
Another good read by Rita Potter. This novel took me to places I did not know existed. My original thoughts on a campground did not match what I found in this book. Potter’s writing described the surroundings of the campground so well that it became an extra character. I would describe this story as a bang-their-heads-together trope. The main protagonists eventually find they have more in common than they first thought but their daddy issues kept them apart. I definitely recommend this book.
I didn’t know what to expect, but I can tell I was completely satisfied and happy I chose to read this book, it’s brilliant. This is a great read that hooks you right from the start.
Brianna Goodwin left behind long ago her old life, her father and her hometown, she has everything she wishes for now in the city, so the last thing she wants is to go back. But when he passed away, he had other plans for her. She goes back reluctantly to the reading of his will, to find she inherited his campground. Dani Thorton has been very happy as the campground manager; she knows she has done a good job but never expected to be asked to attend the reading of her long-time employer's will. What happens when two women that on the surface are very different but when thrown together, find they’re more alike than they thought?
I hope I can do justice to the book with this review. It’s a book I can completely recommend and sure hope that other readers find the same joy in it that I found.
This is a great story. The characters are well-written and the plot engaging. The character and story development are excellent. I was so engrossed with the story that I didn’t want to stop until the last page.
There are so many things in this book that I loved. This is one of those books that are so good, that you want to devour it but also enjoy it at a slower pace at the same time because you don't want it to end.
There’s a saying that mentions, a great love comes from a strong, deep friendship; this is the case of Brianna and Dani, their chemistry is amazing. Their playful banter, the easiness between each other and everything around them happen in a very organic way, it is marvellous to witness how their friendship blossoms into love. I enjoyed greatly how they got to know each other and fell in love without even noticing until they reached the point of no return. Another thing I applaud about the characters is how multi-layered and beautifully flawed they are, it’s easy to connect and relate to them. The side characters are also very interesting and well developed. There are two that at the beginning aren’t very likeable, but is a wonderful thing to observe their redemption.
I don’t want to say more to avoid spoilers, so I’ll just finish saying that this is a great read that hooks you right from the start. If you’re looking for a book with excellent character development, delightful dialogues and just plain good storytelling, this is the book for you. I highly recommend it.
I received an ARC copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving my review.
I love Rita's writing! I felt like a friend immersed in the lives of Dani and Brianna. I love the description of the Thundering Pines campgrounds. Dani is the campgrounds manager and finds herself at the late owners reading of the will, wondering why. Brianna is there for her estranged fathers reading. She's a successful Executive Vice President and is busy. She brings her attorney girlfriend Caroline. Also there is her half sister Shelby who's there. What transpires affects them all. The campground goes to Brianna. Which means Dani and Brianna have to work together. This is a beautiful slow burn/friends to lovers love story! Worthy of more than 5 atars!
I received an ARC of this this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review. Let me start by saying that the premise of this book is one of my favourites: two characters thrown together by circumstances and catching feelings. So I was very excited to read this book. It did not disappoint. This is the first book that I've read by this author so I was not too sure what to expect. I tend to be very critical of writing style as a poorly written story, no matter how great the plot sounds, is a total turnoff for me. This story was well written and the storyline well executed. The story is a slow burn with a bit of angst, but in my opinion, just the right amount. Both MCs have a lot of baggage but I liked the author's navigation and exploration of the issues. The MCs' back stories served their purpose of giving insight into the characters' personalities and reactions to particular circumstances without distracting from the story developing between them. The only bit I was not too keen on was the timeline in terms of the characters' history. I had to do a bit of mental math to calculate their age and who was where when. Otherwise, great book, great story, well-written and likeable characters and a happily ever after.
When Brianna inherits her estranged father's campground which is managed by Dani, Brianna fully intends to sell it after a 6 month wait period. But as she interacts with Dani, they begin to build a rapport that turns into a close friendship in which they tell each other things about themselves that they've held back from others. Brianna visits the campground and grows too love it at the same time that her feelings for Dani are growing.
But Brianna is in a 10-year committed relationship with another woman and Dani has reasons in her past why she wouldn't be in a relationship with a woman.
This is a very long book, which I place in the category of Didn't-Need-to-be-This-Long. Much of the first 2/3 is about the growing friendship and feelings and a lot about a campground. It's only in the final 1/3 that important plot developments occur, one of which involving Brianna's half sister is not fully explained.
I wanted to like this book more than I did and have a hard time recommending it, despite a number of positive reviews by others. I wasn't particularly fond of either MC, wondering at one point whether Brianna needed to stay in her long-term relationship (although the author took care of that issue later in the book). I just wasn't sold on this pairing.
I really enjoyed reading this book. I wanted it to be longer. Would like to see her moms story told... I liked the building a fire and the favorite type of firewood angle. Please write more.
Absolutely wonderful book. Brianna and Dani seem to be totally opposites to start with. But first looks are deceiving. There is just so much to enjoy. Dani loves and lives for Thundering Pines. But Brianna had a rough childhood and young adult life with her father. He dies and leaves her Thundering Pines. But Brianna's life and girlfriend is in the city. The strong connection Dani and Brianna form is visible. There is baggage for most of the characters that add so much. But it just all comes together in, to me, a perfect way. 🥰 I did receive an ARC, but this is my own thoughts.
A delightful read. Rita Potter makes her characters so real and believable you really don’t want the book to end. I went to sleep dreaming of Dani and Brianna and more of what might happen in their lives. The author makes you feel like you are their with them and lets her characters make good and bad decisions along the way just as people do in real life. Definitely recommended this book to others.
TLDR: A well-written love story that deserves a larger audience.
I wish the book cover did this story justice. I almost skipped past it while browsing Kindle Unlimited. And what a shame that would have been, because I'm a sucker for nature and a well-executed, well-written story. So, thumbs-up to fate for stepping in and making sure I read this.
I get the distinct impression the author thoroughly planned this novel out before writing it. If not, she's at least been methodical in the way she's wrapped the narrative together. It doesn't waste much time, and there are few scenes I think the book would be better off without. That's quite an accomplishment for 464 pages. So, as a reader, it's nice to feel like my time was valued. It's also refreshing to read something that has been thoroughly edited. My eye balls appreciate it.
Furthermore, the protagonists were complex and flawed and easy to love. By the time I reached the epilogue I felt they had grown and changed in ways that were not only better for them, but better for everyone around them. I imagined Brianna in that tense opener and knew she was free in the end. And Dani's absence in the back half impacted the mood of every scene. It was easy to miss her quips and jovial nature.
That ferris wheel scene in Missouri? I'm sure my face was plastered with a grin the entire time. So sweet.
I do have criticisms. There is a scene midway through, where the characters are talking by an outdoor fire, that was too similar to two scenes prior. Even though the dialogue relates important details, the characters are tip-toing around the discussion and seeking validation. I would argue they've all ready been given validation and should have been less inhibited - especially because they're drinking.
My other criticism is that I'm not a huge fan of an unwillingness to examine feelings and acknowledge them for what they are. The inner monologue claims the characters don't know why certain feelings are coming up. Yes, they do. It reminds me of the age old question, "But how did you know you were a lesbian?" Because every time I touched a girl I was pining for she lit me up from my head to my toes. It's not rocket science. It's biology stepping in.
So, my constructive criticism is that I would love to see the author rely less on feigned ignorance and more on awareness. It's okay for characters to be aware and scared because that is how humans behave. We often know exactly what we want and are terrified to go after it.
The hardest part about reading this one was seeing Brianna in such a toxic relationship and unable to see it. It's true in reality that we tend make a lot of our relationship choices based on what our parents modeled for us, and that often leads to bad places. Guys? Therapy. M'kay?
Sometimes, Brianna thoughts were a little repetitive. As an example, she's being introspective in this one scene and, within a few paragraphs, thinks, '...why had it begun to feel hollow?' Repeats aren't the end of the world, but they're less obvious if you space them out more. Thankfully, this didn't happen again too many times.
This story felt like it jumped around a lot. From POV to literal time jumps. I had a hard time keeping up, and I just wish those jumps had clearer timestamps and better transitions. There were a couple of times that I felt like I wasn't getting the true scope of this burgeoning friendship and why it was working and how Brianna was feeling enticed by her hometown. I hate guessing as to events in the book. Like, there is a scene where Dani takes Brianna to a local bar upon her insistence, and then end up trying to do one of the dances. Shelby, the half-sister, purposefully slams into Brianna from behind, ruining the dance and their fun. And not only do we not see the aftermath, but the next scene is a time jump, and this incident isn't even referenced. Really? Cause I wanted to know what went down, how did they extricate themselves from a potentially volatile situation.... But forget that, because it was apparently a filler scene, so we don't get to see this hypothetical bar fight.
I liked the story overall. I enjoyed the friendship that became a romance, even when Dani continued to deny that she was a lesbian. It was heartbreaking when her backstory came out, how her wonderful father wasn't so wonderful and actually really traumatized her. God, I hope she got some therapy, at least.
Rita Potter takes the dark secrets, traumatic experiences, and difficult, often manipulated, choices of her characters pasts and weaves a tulmoustous untangling emotional story touching each of their lives affecting relationships and circumstances.
This storm crashes into their lives, in the small town of Flower Hills, when Donald Goodwin dies drawing them together for the reading of his will and hear his decision about Thundering Pines. The whirlwind of events and emotions this triggers threatens to uncover every deception and longing, and topple dreams and destroy relationships for the MC's and supportive characters.
Traveling from this small town you enter the world of a lesbian power couple, and their friends, in NYC, who are fighting for success in the male dominated corporate environment while compromising their hearts longings and deceiving themselves.
Yet Thundering Pines keeps stirring things up drawing us deeply into Brianna's relationships with her longtime girlfriend Caroline, her half sister, Shelby, and her new working relationship and friendship with Dani. We experience the wrenching conflicts and delightfully join in the lighthearted banter.
In the midst of all of this there is healing and growth, grief and discovery, heartbreak and maturity as well as romance. You will cry, yell, hope and laugh along with those who people this story and in the end, you'll be pleasantly satisfied.
An emotional rollercoaster of a book. I am not always a fan of slow burn but this one is done well and I enjoyed reading it. I liked the characters. The MCs are complex and flawed and they develop throughout the book and learn to accept each other and change. The secondary characters are not consistent. While we have the show-stealing aunt, we also have other characters who are but a flat portrayal of a stigma.
I liked that the author gave the MCs plenty of time to deliberate and deny their connection but I was a bit disappointed when the resolution/ending was so brief. I mean, after going through the whole rollercoaster, we deserve a bit more time with the lovers or a slightly lengthier resolution so we get used to the impending end, right? In that sense, the pacing is great up until the end.
One more thing I have to point out, and gleefully so, is the delightful banter between the MCs. It brought humor and lightness to the somewhat heavy-angsty story. It made the book into an easier read.
T&T: Tropes: friends to lovers, slow burn, inheritance, forced proximity, city girl/country girl Triggers: infidelity, an estranged parent, an unsupportive parent, vengeful relatives, forest fire Rating: 3.5 stars
This is such a roller coaster run of emotions! It is a slow burn, friends to lovers and workplace romance with a tons of mental breakdowns, heartaches, tears and finally a much deserved happy ending. Dani the country woman is hard to like in the beginning, she is tough, smart and great at her job of managing the camping ground, but also suffering from low self esteem and doesn't believe in love, her homophobic father destroyed her confidence of finding true love for decades, and she needs intense psychotherapy to fully overcome her mental trauma. But as the story unfolds, I am warming up to her and understand her reasons of self sabotage. Brianna is much more likable and behind her city girl ice queen mask I see a brave woman who is not afraid of confronting her past mistakes and fighting for her true happiness. A great love story that touches your soul!
This was a beautiful story. It was emotional, funny, angsty and a whole lot more. It was one of those stories that kept me wanting to read on, and on, to discover what happens. The unlikely friendship of the MCs Brianna and Dani was amazing in how it unfolds. The bond they developed was not without its trials and tribulations at first, but they persevered and both grew stronger for it and discovered so much about their individual selves. This all culminated in a wonderful ending, an ending I was hoping for to happen. Rita's wit and humor along with her amazing writing is displayed throughout the entire book. Thanks, Rita, for sharing your great talent.
Even the characters know it: "We’re creating unnecessary problems for ourselves." The characters motivations don't make sense and, on top of that, their actions make them unlikable: - Dani is a homophobe. - Brianna is a cheater. - Dani's mother is a cheater. - Dani's aunt is a liar. - Brianna's sister is an arsonist (but with second thoughts?). - Brianna's girlfriend is a cheater and manipulative. - Dani's dad is a homophobe and an abuser. - Brianna's dad is a cheater and a toxic father. But it's ok, all is forgiven. At the end we don't even know what was the idea behind the will that started all this.

Brianna has a good job in Chicago. She had left her small hometown years ago and had a good job in the city. When her father died, she went back to her hometown for the reading of her father's will. She inherited a campground. With her half-sister, Skylar really wanted. She went to the campground. She met Danielle. They both had issues that they had to solve before they could have a relationship. I found the plot very good, and the characters were exceptional. I recommend this book for all romance readers.
Enjoyed it. However slight gripe, the current girlfriend has no redeeming qualities. I couldn't get why they were together. I sort of got it as the book went on but not really. The two mains are friends. All the pieces are in place for things to go wrong. 68% and I know there will be the break up so they can make up but I wish they didn't have to. That is how involved I am. It did go wrong, then so right!
This is the first time reading Rita Potter. What a wonderful story. You can feel the characters are alive and how the forest and camp fires smell. You want to go camping but camping at Thundering Pines. A story that has to dealing with chasing love from there fathers, to wanting a real relationship that has love and not running away from it but in bracing it. Ps good last name for Brianna.
Another ‘can’t put down’ read from Rita Potter! A book filled with so many emotions as a result of actions and decisions made parents, family, friends and the MC’s themselves and the impact of those!! This book is an emotional rollercoaster or ‘ferris wheel’ !! Having said that it also made me chuckle with some of the scenes and banter between Brianna and Dani. The depth of the authors writing is wonderful.
This is one of those books I really wanted to love, but there was just something not clicking. It all starts with main characters who have a lot going on, so it's definitely not a light read, and on more than one occasion they had me seriously question their choices and if they are even ready to be together. Secondary characters also fell flat. There is some good banter, but just not enough to recommend it.
