L.A. is teeming with demons. Only one man and his ragtag team of supernatural misfits can stop them.

Three weeks have passed since Artemus Steele discovered that he is part angel, brother to a twin he knew nothing about, and now technically the unwitting leader of a gang of freaks. Following an epic battle in New York that saw him and his new allies unearth the identity of the demonic organization the Vatican has been fighting for decades, all Artemus wants is for life to return to some semblance of normality – which is kinda hard when his home has been invaded by unwanted tenants.

Thrust into a role he never wanted, Haruki Kuroda, the new heir to L.A.’s most infamous Yakuza group, desires only one thing: to avenge the death of his older brother. After tracking down the sole witness to the brutal killing, Haruki’s path crosses that of Artemus and his friends in a confrontation that sees a new power awaken inside the Yakuza heir.

Destinies collide when Elton LeBlanc enlists Artemus and his team to help investigate a rise in demonic manifestation in L.A. and uncover what Ba’al is up to in the City of Angels. But what they unearth is not what they were expecting.

Because Ba’al is looking for something. And if they find it before Artemus and his allies, Hell will come to L.A.

description

I've been a huge fan of A.D. Starrling and her brainy books for a while now, so I'm always happy when a new one lands in my inbox. The Legion series is technically a spinoff of the Seventeen series (one of my favorites), but I don't think its absolutely necessary to start with Seventeen. Honestly, I can't exactly remember how it spins off, but I know I realized it in the first book... my brain is just getting too old to remember details in between book releases. I obviously need to take and keep better notes! You will need to read this series in order, however, as there is a continuing story arc that needs to be followed closely.

So in Blood and Bones, we met Artemus Steele and began assembling a team of divine w arriors. Our kickass team includes warriors, beasts and super soldiers, all with interesting powers, weapons and capabilities. The team discovers and goes to battle against a group of big bads, known as Ba'al. And throughout the story, we begin to interpret the biblical mythology that Starrling will use to guide the series.

In Fire & Earth, we see the team heading from their home base of Chicago to Los Angeles, which seems to have become a hot bed of demon activity. It's here that we meet a new group of interesting people - the Chinese mob! I really liked Haruki Akihito, Ogawa, and some of the other shady underworld characters that were introduced. I'm sure you can guess that Haruki will have some future involvement with our team, but I won't tell you exactly how as finding out is half the fun. But I found Haruki to be uber interesting and can't wait to see how he integrates in the future.

I would say that the plot theme is fairly similar to Blood and Bones in that we have a similar activity occurring, just different players in a different location. I was used to the differing POVs at this juncture, so I didn't find it so jarring or hard to follow. And I really do like all of our team and characters, so I enjoy getting peaks into each head individually. I also find the mythology to be cool and complicated - which is classic A.D. Starrling. She does her research and she does it well, and she is great at world building and character dynamics.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from the author.

Another good one! With the introduction to another Guardian it's still packed with snark and laughter..I like how each book so far has tied up the latest predicament they find themselves in!

I thought Blood And Bones was awesome but the series just keeps getting better and better! Ten stars, definitely! We now have a new person being added to the group to fight against evil and help to the Vatican.
Enter Haruki, who is definitely different. You can hear the innocence in his voice and there is definitely humor. Enter part of a Japanese syndicate. The plots twists will keep you busy. But I found the ending of the book humorous and an excellent way to get you ready for the next book in the series.
You will learn more about the relationship between Drake and Artemis and bits and pieces of the others characters.

Loved the book; I read it within a day. The plot revolves around good vs evil and keeps the reader hooked along with the main characters’ sense of humor. Unfortunately for Artemus, there is a new member, Haruki, to the group to also annoy him. Can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

I loved the end of the book. The new characters are interesting. My only quibble was a conversation that happened in Chicago…and in Los Angeles. The same conversation, as if everyone forgot they had literally talked about this earlier. I can’t be more specific without slightly spoiling things. I wound up finishing the book in the waiting room of a dentist office without wi-fi. I REALLY wanted to get the next book there and just to find out what happened immediately after the last line. I instead started rereading the short story collection from the author. It is a free download she does for subscribers. I hope people give it a try. The characters are from the “Seventeen” series, but all three stories are great, especially the one where Lucas is haranguing a samurai into training him. Anyway back to THIS book. I was surprised to find that I loved it as much as I did. I have liked everything by the author, so I knew this one would be good. When I started it I was worried about the Yakuza angle. It’s hilarious that a book with angels, demons, chimeras, etc. that the most unbelievable part was the criminals. If only gangsters in real life had the amount of honor those in the book do.

LA is overrun with demons and only one person can stop them, Artemus and his supernatual cohorts swing into action.
Along with his twin brother he has only recently discovered.
Now thanks to the Vatican organisation, knowing the identity of their enemies, the peaceful life he dreams of us far away when the demons invade.
Now mixed up with Haruki Kuroda, the newly minted heir to the LA branch of the Yakuza who wants only to avenge the death of his brother Artemus and his gang witness a power awaken in Haruki.
Meanwhile Ba'al is plotting something unexpected and if Artemus doesn't stop him all hell will be unleashed on the city.
A slick and worthy sequel in the Artemus Steele series.

Fire and Earth

I just love this series. The story keeps you on the edge of your seat and you get to know each of the characters in more depth. Some mysteries are solved and a ton more develop. The icing on the cake is the humor that is interjected through out. For someone who reads several books at a time, the story has me lingering, not wanting to switch to my next book. It is a must read.

3.5*
I’m settled in and enjoying this for the most part. I liked the addition of Haruki. And it’s proving to be an entertaining read. I just hope it doesn’t become too samey.

While I’m enjoying the story and the interesting characters I have to say I’m not totally won over by the writing.
But it’s straight onto the next one now….

New portal

Hero's are awakening as the demons find portals to hell the guardians awaken one for each portal. Together with allies from around the world they fight to keep the gates to the demons realm closed. Interesting story line with enough true mixed with the mythology to bring you into the story. Good Read.

Wowsers! So many changes our heroes, reluctant or disbelieving or have been convinced having been through the fire - literally- have gone through!
Fast development of the characters! I heartily suggest this series as a consideration for your next supernatural read!
I don't want to let you know of the mythological creatures they become because it would spoil your enjoyment of discovery.

Wow, this second book of the series is just as engaging as the first. Artemus and his new found posse find themselves involved with yet more demons and now they also have the Yakusa to deal with.
Excellent series for any fan of fantasy and paranormal fiction, equally as good as Seventeen.

When I think I can't

When I think I can't love this series more then I do. It plays out like a total movie in my head. I enjoy each character and the depth of their thoughts and dedication to a cause they did not choose.

This is a new series that I’ve started by an author whom I’ve never read. But I’m completely hooked! This is a great series… full of action with a little suspense, plenty of comradery with a double dose of snark and wit! I’m so glad that I decided to check out this series.

really enjoyed

Very fast paced and exciting. I like the development of the characters and the introduction of the new ones. My only complaint is that the author is trying too hard to be funny and add humorous scenes. They aren’t necessary.

This book gives you a small glance into the demons. The book is scary with a dash of humor. I like the interaction between the new characters and the characters who have been fighting for years. Each trying to keep the gates locked from the demons.

More humorous than the first book and more enjoyable. Artemus has become the “straight man” in their merry band.

In this book, Haruki’s brother is killed by demons and he wants vengeance. The fighting is in California.

cool

The demons need to die a slow, ugly, painful death and our heroes seem to be delivering the same in spades. Biblical references check out and I’m on to the next installment if mayhem.
