I was looking forward to this trip to New Orleans. In ways, it delivered. We got hoodoo, necromancy and even vampires and archetypes showing up, plus more puzzles about Donovan‘s strange magic and her aunts showing up as well.
The problem is, it didn’t get enough space. There were so many ritualistic killings, it was one rush from crime scene to crime scene and in the end not even that anymore. The vampires barely showed up and when they did, they remained pretty pale. Hoodoo and its magic system also were barely explained, the focus on necromancy and Riga’s obsession with the old man - which is another thing: two books previous he was named near the end, yet now, he was always simply the old man, which got on my nerves very fast.
Then it’s pretty obvious, Riga is pregnant, still, in the end it’s supposed to be a big surprise.
So yeah, I wasn’t that happy with this one, though, as usual, I still did like enough of it to read the next - and last - book of this series.

Riga and the gang are filming a new season of Supernatural Encounters in New Orleans when she's approached by a hoodoo hit man who says he's been hired to killer her. But before she can find out more he turns up dead. Donovan is in Macau, her niece is angry with her and runs off and she's forced to work with an egotistical actor on a cross-over episode while bodies keep turning up with occult trappings.

I love books set in New Orleans. This one caught my attention right away. I loved how the two reality shows clashed. I loved everything that happened in graveyards.
From early on I was wondering why Rega didn't spend more time focusing on Hallie.
I also wondered at how easily the nurse was duped.
I'm ready for Pen to grow up.
Love the dog and the secondary characters.

Less fun than the others.
Had to admit, I enjoyed this offering from Kirsten Weiss less than the previous one. In this one Riga was somewhat more annoying. She just seemed to complain and be overly emotional at odd times perhaps that could be explained by the twist at the end, but still!

This time we learn about Hoodoo magic as Riga, Donovan and company spend time in New Orleans. This one gets a little darker but in a heart-thumping and exciting way. I loved it. Now if only we understood Donovan's "magic". I can hardly wait to read the next book!

I’ve been binge reading the series for a few months and this one is in my top favorites! It’s so engaging and witty, with interesting plot twists and characters. Can’t wait for the next one!

Fast and fun. For the sake of full disclosure, Kirsten Weiss is one of my cohorts at misterio press. That's why/how I came to be reading a paranormal mystery, not my normal cup of tea.
I selected this book of Kirsten's because of the New Orleans setting. What better backdrop for hoodoo practitioners, vampires and necromancers? The crowds of drunken revelers provide wonderful chaos for an attempted abduction, and the old cemeteries with their above-ground crypts offer their magic and creepiness to more than one scene. My favorite scene in the book, though, happens on a levee along the Mississippi.
The magic in the book enchanted me, from the "goofer dust" to a "modified mirror spell" to Brigitte, the gargoyle familiar, a completely charming character. Even though there are many ritual murders in the book, the author does not dwell on the horror element of the black magic. Much of the violence is offset with witty, humorous dialog.

Independent reviewer for Paranormal Romance and Authors That Rock. The Hoodoo Detective by Kirsten Weiss is the first book by her that I read and I have to say that I was very impressed and loved it. Riga Hayworth and her husband Donovan have to help Pen her nice to stay safe while gets in lots of trouble. Is hard to write this review without giving to much but I have to say I love writing and the theme of it.... I have to say I will be reading the rest of this books so that I can understand the story better..
