This is a review for Throne of Slumber by Jamie Dalton
When you start off with a book featuring an MC who's completely out of the norm, you betcha it's gonna be a good read! As with all of Jamie's series, every one is completely different to the other, new concept, new world, new magic, new awesomeness.
Charlotte is a Light Fae, and the only reason she's not spat on, driven out, is because she's the heir apparent to the throne. Even her own father looks at her with revulsion and disdain. Why would that be, you might wonder is she subjected to this, well, as we all know, Fae are notoriously lithe and magical. So what happens when you're not? That's the case for Charlotte, she has no magic, she's far from lithe, she's plus size, positively chubby. She's a terrific character, genuine, loving and contrary to her father, the King, compationate and wanting the best for her kingdom. I was blown away by the revelation of what Charlotte actually is, really cool! The Light Fae Court rules for 6 summer months and the Dark Fae for 6 winter months. Which should ideal, until someone decides, Nah, I need to rule year round, and sends a curse to the Dark Fae Court.
The MMC Jeb is a Dark Fae, adopted by 2 of the nicest people possible but when he discovers who he is, why he was adopted, he sets off to try help his people and meets up with Charlotte in the guise of a man. Well you can just imagine how that pans out! No? Nothing for it, you'll have to read it...
I love Oswin, so fiercely loyal to Charlotte, doing whatever he can to help her right the wrong. 2 other stand out characters are Kiera, a darn strong personality and Wren, the tooth fairy? Yes, you read that right! Their journey reveals much, the dangers are real and the outcome just right, although there's still more to be done, more to be righted and roles to be solidified, which I'm looking forward to reading in the next book.
I received the ARC for Throne of Slumber. I gave it 5 stars. It was a great Fantasy read. Fast paced and Action packed. Loved the sleeping beauty retelling aspect. I loved that it sucked me in and before I knew it I was half way through the book! The plot is easy to follow and has some interesting twists. I love fated mates, I highly recommend this fantasy romance! You’re not going to want to put it down once you start it.
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of Throne of Slumber by Jamie Dalton, which is a part of this box set. I received the book this morning and have just finished it now— I absolutely devoured the story, because I could NOT put it down. It was fast paced without skipping over important details, easy to follow and thoroughly engaging. More than enough so to have me chomping at the bit to read the rest of these stories. Would rate 4.5 stars if the app would allow it. Phenomenal.
I read the Throne of Slumber story within this set and I loved it! It was a gender bend Sleeping Beauty retelling and it was done beautifully. It had everything, divided kingdoms, Faeted mates, magic, battle and you could still picture the Sleeping Beauty story within it.
This was the first gender bent retelling I read and it was just amazing. It flowed beautifully and the main characters were written so well. I could picture everything going on and there was enough detail and descriptions that everything described was easily pictured without it being detail overload.
Given to the wolf king- Adalynd Grayves This was my first wolf/fae Faeted mates story and it was so good! Definitely more on the paranormal side and I’ve only ever read one other paranormal centered book and I wasn’t disappointed. I love the slow burn romance trope so much!
I read throne of slumber by Jamie Dalton in this box set. It's a gender bent sleeping beauty retelling. Charlotte is not the typical fae, she's curvy and has no magical ability known to her. At a ball meant for her to find a suitor, she met a witch who was looking for someone. Fast forward and it looks like the dark fae kingdom has been cursed. Charlotte takes it upon herself to team up with Jeb and his father wren to break the curse. There's adventure, fated mates and a few twists throne in the mix. It was a cute short novella and i loved the characters.
I received an ARC copy of Throne Of Slumber and this is my honest review.
Throne Of Slumber is a gender bender, Sleeping Beauty retelling. It is a fast paced, slow burn and fade to black. Our FMC is plus sized, which I love seeing and don't see often enough. Although it is a short read, it had wonderful character building, was full of action, surprises and enough excitement to keep you turning page after page. If you're a fan of fantasy romance, I would highly recommend this book. I think that even those who don't usually read this type of romance would even enjoy this book.
Charlotte is a light fae, heir to the throne and seemingly holds no magical powers...or does she? Her father, the king, is cruel to her because of her lack of magic and also is cruel to the other people in his kingdom. When the king holds a ball, Charlotte witnesses a conversation between a woman and the king and queen. When Charlotte chases her down to ask if she can help with whatever her problem is, she learns that the woman is a witch that has come to the kingdom in search of her love. The king has told the witch that her love isn't being held in the light fae kingdom and sends her to the dark fae kingdom, with ulterior motives for doing so. The king is a power hungry jerk who wishes to divide the kingdoms from their treaty and take on ruling all to himself. Jump forward a bit and Charlotte has disguised herself as a man, with the help of her royal guard (and friend). They go to a local pub to eavesdrop and gather intelligence. She learns that the dark fae has been cursed and everyone in the kingdom is asleep because of it. She meets Jeb and his father who are heading to the dark fae kingdom with hopes of helping the cursed. Jeb has recently learned that he is adopted and that his real parents are royalty, making him heir to the dark fae throne. Charlotte tells them that she suspects the witch is the one who has cursed them, after being sent there by her father. She convinces Jeb to let her join them on their journey because she wants to find the witch. Jeb is under the impression that Charlotte is man and agrees to let her join them. Their journey is action packed and fast paced and along the way, Jeb discovers that Charlotte is not a man. Once Jeb knows who she truly is, he helps her discover and embrace her newfound magical powers. Charlotte also learns why she has these specific powers and who she was destined to become. Along the way, Jeb and Charlotte discover that they are destined to be together as fate has chosen and realize they are each other's soul mate.
I have read other books from this author and once again, I was not disappointed. There is so much more that I would love to say about the book but didn't want to completely ruin it with spoilers for those that haven't read it yet. I loved both of the main characters and was left wanting to read more about them and what the future holds for them. I loved other characters in the story as well but it would take all day for me to explain why. This is definitely a book that I plan to read again and again. All in all I give it 5 stars. I can't wait to read the rest of the books in this series!
I'm also currently reading "Crown Of Silver Thorns" and "Given To The Wolf King" and will update my review as soon as I finish.

***For Throne and Slumber*** *World building *Magic *Secret Identity *Light and Dark Fae
This was a fun and interesting read. I loved the world she built and the complex characters. This is a “fade to black” romance, which is not my typical book. While I did miss the spice aspect of the storyline I really enjoyed everything else. Charlotte is a strong FMC who isn’t your typical princess and heir to the throne. She sees injustice and tries to fight to correct it. This strong will of hers leaves her pushing back on her father’s, the king’s, rules to help and make a better life for her people. The world-building was great and not overdone. The love story was sweet and well done. I will be allowing my 12-year-old avid reader to read this. I think she is going to love it. While yes there are some more mature parts in the story I think it is great for those that can handle them! Great book. I cannot wait to read more from this author! ********I was given this book as an ARC for my honest opinion.
Given to the Wolf King *Fae *Wolves *Cursed kingdom *Strong FMC *World Building
Given to the Wolf King had an interesting world-building. I enjoyed the magic that was introduced in the book and the unicorns were awesome! Cullen wants to be seen as fair, strong, and dominant but his land is cursed and he needs help from the Fae. I love how there are different kingdoms, all split in their beliefs, values, and opinions. Aoilfe is a fiery-spirited FMC who has to learn to think before she acts/speaks, which is fun and snarky! I enjoyed this book. It took a bit to get invested but once I was I couldn’t put it down. I want more! I would recommend this book.
I would recommend a read-through with a fine toothcomb from an editor or two but the book was great! The story was great! And the characters were amazing!
Crown of Silver Thorns
Witches Fae Taken Captive War between kingdoms
This novella is a quick, fast-paced, and rather enjoyable read. I loved the magic system and dynamic between the fae and witches. I loved how both cultures told stories or “fairytales” about each other to fuel the hatred and fear between the two kingdoms—ensuring that any “half-breed” will be shunned and chastised throughout life. But the catch? The one they are bullying is the witch queen’s daughter. Merlyn is the daughter of the witch queen and a Nobel fae’s son. Her entire life her witch coven shunned her because she was half witch and half fae, and an abomination. That all changed one day after an attack on the coven. This book is so good. It kept me engaged and interested in the storyline. I look forward to the next release in this book series because the cliffhanger they left us on was not kind! LOL
This is a review for Throne of Slumber by Jamie Dalton. I received an ARC release copy and I sat down, finished in an hour. This book has fae, magic, a sleeping beauty-esque curse, and a plus size MC which is something I love to see, and I wish I had grown up with more MC's like me.
I enjoyed getting to watch Charlotte grow into herself, and grow in power and confidence as the story progressed. I loved seeing some of the little issues that those of us who are plus sized go through incorporated into this book, and I loved watching her overcome everything that was thrown her way.
Overall, a very enjoyable read. Can't wait to read more from Jamie Dalton!
The story I am reviewing in the Faeted Mates anthology is called By The Flame written by Reina Torres. I thoroughly enjoyed this story. Reina Torres is a great story teller and this one is no exception. Mara is half Fae and David is a New York City cop. He is drawn to Mara and, to her annoyance, Mara is attracted to him as well. Magical hijinks ensue when Mara is assigned by her father... the Fairy King, to bring back Locryn. He has over stayed his welcome and it's time for him to go back home. He doesn't want to and he has no intention of making it easy on her. Get this book ASAP and see what happens when human and Fae collide. I promise you won't regret it. Sorry, no spoilers. I received this ARC and here is my honest review.
Thank you for providing me with an arc for Throne of Slumber. This is a "plus-sized gender bender retelling of sleeping beauty". It is a wonderfully fast-paced, action-packed retelling that will immediately suck the reader in. It did take me a while to read but not because of the book. That is my fault and life was chaotic. The average reader could finish this within a day. However, I am glad that it took me so long to read. Throne of slumber was my book to relax in those early hours of the morning.
A fast-paced story that kept me interested the whole way through. With likable characters and in depth world building. The romance felt a little forced at first, but quickly became more natural.
This is a review for Throne of Slumber by Jamie Dalton.
This is a fantasy gender bend retelling of The Sleeping Beauty.
You have Charlotte who is the light fae princess (who by the way is a plus size character!) and Jeb who is the dark fae prince. The way the world is currently ruled is the light fae kingdom rules it half the year and the dark fae kingdom the other half. But greed happens. All fae have some type of powers, except Charlotte…or does she?
Not only is this a gender bend retelling of Sleeping Beauty, this is also a story of self discovery, love, growth and change.
The story is a solid 4.5⭐️
I got this as an individual ARC from the author. This is my true & honest reviewing
This is also a review for Given to the Wolf King by Adalynd Grayves
This story is about a light fae princess who accidentally crosses the border of the humans kingdom while trying to save the forest and accidentally hurts some kids. The Wolf king and her father agree that she sold stay in the human kingdom for awhile to help bridge the fears.
But there is more going on than what they see.
If you like magic and fae then I highly recommend this story
Given to the Wolf King 5 Star for this one! I really enjoyed this book. It was well written and I found it hard to put down. Even with the fast pace the character development was outstands and I really connected with the characters. I definitely can't wait to continue this series to see what happens next with Aoife and Cullen.
I received an ARC for the book Throne of Slumber in this box set and I absolutely loved it.
Have you ever finished a book & immediately miss the characters? Because I miss Jeb and I want to see more of him and Charlotte 🥺 This was such a unique read, with an interesting plot that keeps you on your toes.
I can’t wait to read more of the stories in the set!
Just completed throne of slumber. The author created a world of fantasy, magic with a little love and hard ache. Two kingdoms divided by dark and light. Hopefully, nature takes back control. Can't wait for the second book
So far I’ve been sent 4 books out of the box set as ARC reads. Unfortunately, they’re mostly just ‘ehh’ to me. A lot of editing needs to be done throughout all of them, and they’re (mostly) more like novella/short story length vs actual books. Almost nothing has jumped out at me as something I’d like to read past the one “book” included in the box set. Will update as I get more.
Update!
So far, I’ve been given the following titles to review out of the box set (and since I was in a hurry when I made the initial review, I’m going to get a little more in-depth now): Fated in Fire, Throne of Slumber, Crown of Silver Thorns, and Given to the Wolf King.
First, let’s look at Fated in Fire. It’s only 8 chapters, so it’s an extremely tiny “book one” to a series. It wasn’t for me, but that’s okay! Definitely check it out if you like your Fae well over 3000 years old and bad ass, and hot, ginger Dragon boys. Same as most of the others, I really wish the intro to the series wasn’t essentially a short story. It just wasn’t enough for me to get into. I want *more* to a BOOK, especially one that’s supposed to set the entire tone for the series. 3.95/5 stars, was left wanting WAY more to start off a series, but I recommend it for anyone who’s down to check it out (just expect it to be more of a prologue than a book!)
Next, let’s focus on Throne of Slumber. I thoroughly enjoyed this one. It grabbed on and held my interest, and was long enough to really let me sink into the world and characters the author is building. It was actually unique and I loved that the heroine was portrayed as flawed and capable at the same time. She didn’t solely rely on others, and having found her fated love only strengthened her resolve and growth instead of defining it. The MMC was well done, had hella protector vibes (but in a good way, not a weird way,) and I think he handled all the revelations pretty well and went with the flow way better than I would have. I’m excited to check out what comes next! 4.5/5 stars, recommend and am happy to look outside the set for more of this world/these characters!
Onto looking at Crown of Silver Thorns. It wasn’t a vibe for me. I didn’t dislike it, but it didn’t reach out and demand my attention. I recommend it for anyone who likes Seelie/Unseelie Fae, characters who are different and learn to survive and thrive, and the typical tropes that go along with those themes. [I’m honestly just a little bored with the whole thing and feel like the stories and worlds are all starting to run together. However, that’s my personal opinion and doesn’t affect my rating for the book in any way.] 3.75/5 stars, left feeling like I needed *more* from it, a fair amount of editing misses, but I recommend for anyone to check out for themselves!
Next, I’m looking at Given to the Wolf King. It wasn’t bad, but I don’t think I’ll continue the series. It had editing misses, but I’m so used to those at this point in the year that as long as I can comprehend what’s on the pages, I mostly ignore it until I review. It wasn’t bad, but I got enough out of it to know I’m not invested in the story or the characters. 4/5 stars, interesting but not enough for me to continue, it gave me a HFN, and I recommend you check it out because it’s an interesting start to a series.
All in all, I won’t be continuing the box set. But I encourage y’all to check it out for yourselves!
* Book 1: Given To The Wolf King - Author: Adalynd Gray - 4 stars
“Given To The Wolf King” was so unique and unpredictable. When I thought one thing was going to happen, the complete opposite did. I really enjoyed stepping foot into this world and learning about the different beings and creatures that resided within it. The story follows a fae princess who would do anything to protect her people. Even illegally crossing the border between lands—which in turn, will set the tone for the story. If you love werewolves, faeries, unicorns, demons, and all of that fun stuff, then this is the story for you!
* Book 2: Throne Of Slumber - Author: Jamie Dalton - Rating: 4 stars
Throne Of Slumber is a unique twist on ‘sleeping beauty.’ The story follows Charlotte—a light Fae princess who sees more to life than what her father wants of her. When she runs into a witch at the palace, that’s when things get complicated. She fears that her father is up to no good with the dark Fae kingdom, and she wants answers.
This book is perfect for most ages, ranging between 12-18. It’s a clean romance with minimal gore. If you enjoy things like sleeping beauty, the tooth fairy, wolves, faeries, Mother Nature, etc… then you will love this story!
* Book 3: Goddess Of The Broken - Author: Jamie Dalton - Rating: 4 stars
This particular book was very unique as well. It made me think back to mid evil times and also reminded me of Greek mythology. Tempest the is FMC and Aiden is the MMC. When she saves his life, that’s what puts the story into motion. I’m not going to say too much on this book, because I don’t want to spoil anything. But if you like fantasy, I highly recommend this one.
In the fated mates box series I’ve read Given to the Wolf King by Adalynd Grayves, Faeted Mates by Amelia Grey, and Throne of Slumber by Jamie Dalton. I really liked how every book kept to the theme of faeted mates and kept it consistent throughout the entire story. It’s interesting to find different takes on the same trope. You’ll find physical markings that claim an FMC to their mate in one to a calling they just can’t deny in another. They are all different spice levels so there is something in there for everyone to enjoy. Some of these books are the beginning to a series and end on cliffhangers. Each book has an interesting take on their own unique magic system. In Faeted mates, the main character is half witch/half fae and not accepted on either side. In Given to the Wolf King, the main character is given to the human king over a transgression she committed. I did find Jeb in the Throne of Slumbers power very intriguing with him being able to control the darkness. If you are looking for that trope, you’ll definitely find it here and enjoy reading it.
This was a whirlwind. I was on the edge of my seat from the first moment. Dark Fae, Unicorns, a kingdom of unaligned Fae and a human kingdom run by someone they call the Wolf King. This is an enemies to lovers story that starts with the Fae princess getting herself into major trouble on the human side of the boarder. I hope the second book comes out in early 2023 because I am super excited for it.
Crown of Silver Thrones by Riley Hunt and Amelia L. Grey
This one… A half witch, half princess who has no magic that she can use is the main character. Her mother and father were star crossed lovers who didn’t get enough time together. I need more to this story because where it left of…. Yeah I need more, I can’t wait for the expanded book and what comes next for Lyn and Leander.
Throne of Slumber by Jamie Dalton
This book is the reason I picked up this anthology. I love Jamie Dalton’s storytelling and this one didn’t disappoint. Charlotte is the Light Fae princess and Jeb is, well more than he seems. Actually they both are. When a cruse befalls the Dark Fae the two much work together to find a way to make their futures and those of the other Fae better.
Review of ‘Throne of Slumber (Black-backed Mirror #1)’ by Jamie Dalton: A Twisted Sleeping Beauty romantic retell
This not your usual fairy/folk tale modern retelling. There are actual conversations between the two prospective romancees as they progress through their shared adventure.
Readers get a lesson in environmental stewardship that we should heed IRL: ‘The greed of mortals has broken the balance’
Also a commentary on the modern work ethic that’s tearing us to pieces by destroying our emotional health: ‘I’ll take a break when I’m dead.’
Going back to read the prequel while I await book #2. I have read other works by this author – I suggest you do, too.
I received an ARC of Throne of Slumber by a Jamie Dalton which is in this collection. And I devoured it in a day and can’t wait to read the rest of the books in this collection. It was fast paced and full of action. And I loved the fact that the MC was plus size.
Please pick this book up if you’ve been thinking about it. I ordered it immediately after reading one of the stories, and will read and review the whole thing.
𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐥𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫: Sleeping Beauty retelling. It was a nice twist where the male had the sleeping beauty vibes. It was about two fae from different kingdoms working together to break a sleeping curse. It was a cute story, very quick and easy to read. I enjoyed some of the magic systems like the shadow magic and really liked Jeb's character. I kind of felt like it read as a very young adult book, like the characters didn't care or think about consequences they just went with whatever. Overall, it was a decent enough read.
𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗶𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗻𝘀: This story is about a half witch, half fae who was born in an unfortunate situation. Where witches and fae are not allowed to be together. After tragedy strikes, she's forced to live in a world she knows nothing about. This story is fun and has such a good pace. It has a badass fmc who knows how to fight. It's enemies to "lovers-ish", with found family and magic!
𝐆𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐨𝐥𝐟 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐠 This one is about two kingdoms, one needing help from the other. But there are so many different beliefs to each side that they have to overcome. This one is more on the paranormal side with more magical creatures. It's fast-paced with good character development.
Review for By the Flame by Reina Torres...the Fae have nothing on the halfling, Mara...she is strong, keeps her head down and does what she is told...what happens when more magical hijinks are thrown at her and she meets a man that will stand beside her...are their lives forfeit or will they live to love another day? Loved it!!
This collection of stories is just fabulous 😍 each author brought such amazing stories to one place and it is amazing. I loved each and every one and was stoked but sad at the end of each one.
What an amazing collection of stories. Each and every one is different yet similar. Impossible to not enjoy each. One such story is by Jamie Dalton, Throne of Slumber. Well written with outstanding characters.
I have read Throne of Slumber and Given to the Wolf King. I loved the Sleeping Beauty retelling in throne of Slumber and the book overall had a great writing style. Great fit for ya even maybe as young as 11. I definitely want to know more.. Given to the Wolf king was a young ya read, storyline was enthralling. Goddess of the Broken by Jamie Dalton was a young YA read, the story was good but I see more potential with it, but as it's a short story for this set it's perfect. Crown of silver thorns was amazing. I started today and just finished. I will look for the second half of this later on. 5 stars
