Tirukkolakkudi, a tiny little village in Pandya territory one day wakes up to the reality that there might be a ghost haunting the Uruni or the main water source of the village. The responsibility of driving the ghost away from its station falls on Tiruvarangan, the village guard. Unable to resolve the issue which is getting complicated by the day, the young lad seeks the help of Vennadar his guide and mentor. Once Vennadar, an old man in his late fiftys enters the scene, the situation dramatically changes eventually culminating into a totally unexpected nail biting finish. Based on a stunning 11th Century CE inscription that directly talks about a Ghost.

About the author

Dr. Gokul Seshadri is the author of several works of historic fiction in Tamil based on the medieval history of South India. He is also a researcher, specializing in South Indian temple art and architecture.

A software architect by profession, Gokul started exploring his creative writing skills 20 years ago - with his first novel Rajakesari. This was followed by many other novels, short stories and articles. From 2010 onwards, he started pursuing academic studies in History with M.A. and M.Phil. degrees, followed by a doctoral research on Chola Ramayana sculptures. His novels are replete with intricate epigraphic, cultural, and historic references drawn from inscriptions, copper plate grants, literatures and living oral traditions. All of his books have been published by Palaniappa brothers. Also, from 2019 onwards, StoryTel India has been publishing his well known works as audiobooks.

2008 முதல் பழனியப்பா பிரதர்ஸ் நிறுவனம் இவரது புத்தகங்களை வெளியிட்டு வருகின்றனர். மேலும் 2019 முதல் ஸ்டோரிடெல் நிறுவனம் இவரது படைப்புக்களை ஒலிப்புத்தகங்களாகவும் வெளியிட்டு வருகிறது.

Gokul Seshadri's Paisasam is a decent attempt at mystery set in history that involves wading through supernatural beliefs in 12th centuary. The book claims to be inspired by a temple inscription that talks about a ghost. Without any kings and queens, the book is set in a village called Thirukolakkudi where suddenly one day a woman spots a man killed a year ago and becomes breathless.

Enters the village guard Tiruvarangan who is trying to investigate the happenings while he himself does not believe in ghosts. When the things start getting complicated he reaches out to his mentor Vennadar and requests him to help him in the investigation. The investigation process is bizarre and while the mystery seems needlessly complex, the outcome is predictable.

Inspired by Kalki's writing, the tamil is beautiful, though it seems anachronistic. I am not sure if the kalvettu tamil is as modern as this or part of the "nayaurai". There is a footnote towards the end on the origins of oor kavalars and karuppu theivam. I enjoyed those historical elements more than the mystery itself.

The landscape which is too important is difficult to get with the oorani and the hill temple and stairs. I felt these are somethings which might have been made easier with illustration.

A decent read of historical fiction without kings.

வரலாற்று புதினங்கள் என்றாலே கதைகள் பெரும்பாலும் அரசர்கள் அல்லது இளவரசர்களை சுற்றி அமைந்திருக்கும். சில ஆசிரியர்கள் சற்றே மாறுபட்டு படைத்தளபதிகளை சுற்றி தங்களது கதைக்களத்தை அமைத்து கொள்வதுண்டு. பெரும்பாலான புதினங்கள் இவ்விரண்டு பிரிவுகளில் அடங்கி விடும். வெகு சிலரே இதில் இருந்து மாறுபட்டு எழுதுவர். அவர்களில் ஒருவர் கோகுல் சேஷாத்ரி. அவரின் ராஜகேசரியிலும் சரி, பைசாசத்திலும் சரி, சாதாரண மக்களே கதை நாயகர்கள். அரசர்களோ அல்லது நகர சபையினரோ அவ்வப்பொழுது வந்து செல்வர். அவ்வளவுதான்.

சிவகங்கை மாவட்டத்தில் உள்ள திருக்கோளக்குடி கிராமத்தில் 1150களில் நடைபெறும் ஒரு கதை. ஒரு மலை, ஒரு ஊருணி, நாயனார் கோவில், ஒரு சுனை, சில வீடுகள் என்று புத்தகம் ஆரம்பமாகும் பொழுதே கிராமத்தின் எழில் சூழ்ந்த சூழலை நம் கண் முன் கொண்டு வந்து நிறுத்தி விடுகிறார் ஆசிரியர். ஊரில் மனநிலை குன்றிய ஒருவன் ஊரில் உள்ளவர்களுக்கு எடுபிடி வேலைகள் செய்து தனது வயிற்றை கழுவி கொள்கிறான். ஒரு நாள் மர்மமான முறையில் ஊருணிக்கரையில் இறந்து கிடக்கிறான்.

சிவகங்கை மாவட்டத்தில் உள்ள திருக்கோளக்குடி கிராமத்தில் பன்னிரெண்டாம் நூற்றாண்டில் நடைபெறும் கதை. வரலாற்று நிகழ்வுகள், பேய் பிசாசுகள், கோவில் நகை திருட்டு எனப் பயணிக்கிற கதை. மிக மெதுவாக நகர்கிறது.

ஒரு சாதாரண கொலை கதையை கையில் எடுத்து விறுவிறுப்பு குறையாமல் வரலாற்றுடன் இணைத்து கூறியிருக்கும் ஆசிரியருக்கு என் முதல் வணக்கம் . Narration எனப்படும் கதை சொல்லும் விதம் தான் இந்த நாவலின் முதல் கதாநாயகன் . எந்த இடத்திலும் படிப்பவருக்கு அலுப்பு தராமல் , சுவாரசியத்தை இம்மி அளவு கூட குறைய விடாமல் ஆசிரியர் எடுத்துரைத்து விதம் கண்டிப்பாக பாராட்டுதலுக்குரியது . எவ்வளவு தூரம் எடுத்துரைப்பில் ஆசிரியர் கவனம் செலுத்தினாரோ அவ்வளவு தூரம் எந்தவொரு முடிச்சுகளையும் அவ்வளவு சீக்கிரத்தில் அவிழ்க்காமல் வாசகர்களை பரபரப்பிலே வைத்திருப்பதில் வெற்றியும் கண்டிருக்கிறார் . இலக்கிய வாசிப்புள்ள அனைத்து தமிழ் வாசகர்களும் கண்டிப்பாக படிக்க வேண்டிய புத்தகம் இந்த புத்தகம் .

Excellent supernatural thriller set in a ancient historic town of Tamilnadu. Although the story started slow, it picks up momentum unfurling a sequence of unpredictable events. Author's effort is highly appreciated. Climax is very good.

Paisasam is a historical mystery/horror novel set in 11th century Kolakudi village. A mentally and physically challenged person dies in the village under mysterious circumstances. One year later, there are sightings of his ghost by the villagers. The village security incharge Thiruvarangan is intrigued whether it is truly the ghost which people are seeing or if there is something sinister afoot. He consults his guru Vennadar who comes to his help. Together they try to uncover the mystery of the ghost. How they solve the mystery forms the backbone of the novel. The novel succeeds in transporting us to the 11th century village, touching upon the lives of the villagers and their customs and traditions. The author has given maps and photos which helps us to visualize the places. It is a racy thriller and keeps us wanting to know on what happens next. There is a nice twist at the end which I didn't see it coming. The focus on ordinary people and their lives keeps it apart from the usual historical novels. Overall a very satisfying read.

Paisasam is another great book from Gokul Seshadri. This is 12th century historic novel with Detective and paranormal background setting. The story was at times a bit lagging in pace. However, the climax revelation was quite shocking and unexpected. Author did not end the story here. He subsequently continued the story with his version of interaction with the paranormal force in an interesting way.

பைசாசம், கோகுல் சேஷாத்திரியின் மற்றும் ஓர் அற்புதமான படைப்பு. கதையின் முடிவில் சற்றும் எதிர் பாராத உச்சக்கட்ட திருப்பம் அருமை. கதை முடிந்த பின்னரும், எழுத்தாளரின் கற்பனை முடியாதது மேலும் சுவாரஸ்யமாக இருந்தது.
தீபிகா அருணின் ஒலி வடிவ புத்தகம் வழக்கம் போல் அருமையாக இருந்தது.

There are many logic issues. Why does Moovendan have to do detective job if all that he did was to take revenge and scare other few? It is only to give the readers twist in the end. There so many similar questions on activities of Moovendan as Vennaadar.

It started well. Maybe it just could have been a conventional ghost revenge or crime detective story. The story could have been little better if they made many conversations and environment description short.

Only credit it takes forward is the news about the reference of ghost in tamil inscriptions.

திகில் நாவல்கள் என்றும் எனக்கு பிடித்தமான ரகம். கோகுல் சேஷாத்ரி என்ற எழுத்தாளரின் படைப்புகள் ஏதும் நான் படித்ததில்லை என்றாலும் பைசாசம் என்ற அந்த தலைப்பே இந்த புதினத்தை படிக்க தூண்டியது. இதை வரலாற்று புதினம் என்று எழுத்தாளரே சொல்லியிருக்கிறார்.

கதைகளம் சிவகங்கை மாவட்டத்தில் அமைந்துள்ள திருக்கோளக்குடி என்ற ஊர். ஊருணியில் இருந்து தண்ணீர் எடுக்க போன பெண்மணி ஒருவள் ஒரு ஆவியை எதிர்கொள்கிறார். ஒரு வருடம் முன்னாள் இறந்த மூவேந்தனுடைய பைசாசம் என்று ஊர் பூசாரி சொல்ல எல்லோரும் அச்ச படுகிறார்கள். ஊர் காவலனான திருவரங்கனுக்கு அந்த பைசாசத்தின் தன்மையின் மேல் சந்தேகம் ஏற்பட அதை விசாரிக்க தீர்மானம் செய்கிறான். எங்கும் ஒரு வழி பிறக்காததால் தன் குருவின் உதவியை நாட, அவர் அந்த ஊருக்கு வருகிறார். அவுங்களுக்கு எதாவது துப்பு கிடைக்கிறதா, இது உண்மையில் பைசாசத்தின் வேலையா என்று கண்டறிவதே இக்கதையின் சாராம்சம்.

முன்னே சொன்னது போல் இது ஒரு வரலாற்று புதினம். புதினத்தினூடே வரலாற்றை அறிகின்றோம். பொதுவாக வரலாற்றை சார்ந்த கதை என்றாலே அதில் இரு தேசங்கள், ராஜாக்கள், போர், காதல் என்று கதை நகரும். இங்கு அப்படி ஒன்றும் இல்லாமல் ஒரு ஊரில் நடக்கும் பைசாச சம்பவமும் அதனை சார்ந்து நடக்கும் விசாரணைகளும் தான் களம். இந்த நடையே சற்று புதிதாக தென்படுகிறது வாசகனுக்கு. எழுத்தாளர் அந்த கோளக்குடியின் அமைப்பையும், கதை நடக்கும் அந்த ஊரிலுள்ள இடங்களின் புகைப்படங்களும் விரிவாக காட்டி ஒரு வித்தியாசமான அனுபவத்தை கொடுக்கின்றார். ஒரு வாசகனால் அந்த இடத்தினுள் நன்றாக சஞ்சரிக்க முடிகிறது. வெறும் வரைபடங்களும் புகைப்படங்களும் மட்டுமன்றி எழுத்தாளர் அந்த இடங்களை பற்றி மிகவும் அழகாக வர்ணித்திருக்கிறார்.

கைப்பிடி அளவுக்கு சில முக்கிய பாத்திரங்களே உள்ள போதும் கதை முழுதும் நிறைந்து நிற்கிறார்கள். அவர்களது பாத்திரங்கள் நல்ல அழுத்தமாக வரையப்பட்டிருகிறது. சின்ன சின்ன விஷயங்கள் கூட ஆழமாக சொல்ல பட்டிருக்கிறது. இருந்தாலும் விறுவிறுப்பான கதைக்களத்தில் வரலாற்று தகவல்கள் சில வாசகர்களை சலிப்படைய செய்யலாம். கதையின் ஓட்டத்தில் காதல், நட்பு, நம்பிக்கை, அவநம்பிக்கை என்று பலவற்றை சரியான அளவில் சொல்ல முயல்கிறார் கோகுல். அந்த காலத்து வாழ்க்கையை, தகுந்த இடங்களில் ஆதாரங்களோடு சொல்ல எழுத்தாளரால் முடிகிறது. ஆனால் கதையின் முடிவு எல்லோராலும் ஏற்க படுமா என்பது சந்தேகமே!

வரலாறு என்பது என்னை எப்போதும் கவர்ந்த ஒரு விஷயம். ஒரு நாட்டினுடைய அல்லது மனிதர்களுடைய வரலாற்றை அறியும் நோக்கத்தில் நாம் காலாத்தை பின் சென்று நோக்குவது என்பது நமக்கு பல விஷயங்களை கற்று தரும். இந்த படைப்பு எனக்கு ஒரு நல்ல அனுபவமாகவே இருந்தது. புதினத்தினூடே வரலாற்றையும் சுவைக்க முடிந்தது. கதையின் முடிவு எப்படி வாசகர்கள் ஏற்றுப்பார்கள் என்று சொல்ல தெரியாத போதும் இது எல்லோராலும் ரசிக்க முடிந்த ஒரு படைப்பே என்பதற்கு எதுவும் சந்தேகம் இல்லை.

Excellent read. Started reading this as a historical fiction. Author has researched stone inscriptions belonging to 12th century in a Tamilnadu village (Thirukolakkudi) and has told the story based on the inscriptions. Very interesting story that revolves around a ghost. Gripping with lot of twists.
