Adding this to the list of books I love in my new favorite genre modern x ancient which also includes Guardian, Panguan, Drowning Sorrows in Raging Fire, and After Marrying the Evil God. Typically I’m a serial note taker with names, terms, and locations etc often rereading if something isn’t clear… but halfway through I just decided just to read and hope for the best 🫣I had so much fun with this novel and everything came together nicely at the end. So this is what it’s like to enjoy a book and not obsess over every name, term, location thinking if you don’t remember you’ll miss something important.
Summary: The description of this novel is fun to read but useless if you want to know what it’s about 🙄 Basically this is a story that starts out in modern times but most of the characters have known each other thousands of years. The CP are currently not together but have two grown children and are just a dysfunctional family of consisting of a demon, a phoenix and their children who are of course, a mix. The ML is trying to get the MC back and honestly it’s so much fun trying to figure out the nature of their relationship. Supernatural events are happening leading to investigations and revelations of things from the past.
If you’ve read any of Huai Shang’s novels, you know she loves throwing us in the deep end and then we’re just unraveling mysteries right and left about who is who and what their relationship is. I’ve really come to love this style of storytelling with revelations and plot twists throughout.
MC Chu He: Phoenix, calm, doting parent, devoted lover, taciturn, powerful ML Zhou Hui: Demon, shameless, selfish, obsessed/possessive/jealous, loyal, not a good parent, powerful
What to expect: 🐦🔥Modern x ancient supernatural fantasy- starts in the modern setting but also the Hell Realm and Thirty-Three Heavens with occasional teleportation and other spatial realms. 🐦🔥Jam packed with Buddhism and mythology references- Dao, Heavenly tribulations, merits, Nine Heavens, Dharma form, Asura, Six realms of existence, Six Paths of Gods and Buddhas, Fifth Panachen Lama, rebirth, Nirvana, Phoenix, Peacock, & Roc, etc. These are just the ones I remember off the top of my head and barely scratch the surface. I may be getting some of these wrong but I’m listing here as a reminder to go back and research when I have time. 🐦🔥Found family, work crew (similar to Guardian where they are part of a department that deals with supernatural events) 🐦🔥Power couple 🐦🔥Spice and some dub-con. Also, age gap for the side CP with something some might consider questionable but I had no issues with it😬 🐦🔥Flashbacks and different POV (the flashbacks do not take you out of the story and provide some extremely important details) 🐦🔥Some sad separations. I didn’t full-on cry but I sniffled and teared up more than I can count 🐦🔥An unlikeable ML at times. He has a demonic nature so 🤷♀️. This also feels pretty common for the Huai Shang’s novels I’ve read so far 🐦🔥Lots of humor!
Spoilers below about a few things that were ehhh but didn’t bother me: ❗️Chap 43-the dub/non con that changed my mind about Zhou Hui temporarily but he bounced back IMO. I think it helps once you learn more about their history ❗️Technically there is something that happens with a 17 year old people might find questionable. I didn’t, considering the circumstances. *Novel Updates has some reviews that go into more details about these things
Love finding something unique (to me)- feels complex but the story itself isn’t- just a lot of details. Read the extras- especially if you like the side CP!
Lo intenté leer, pero no soporté el MTL. Cada vez le decía "Lunes" al protagonista por llamarse "Zhou Yi" era una prueba para mi paciencia. Tal vez algún día me decida a seguirlo y terminarlo.

Notes: I do not consider this a romance story, haha. More like a story of a dysfunctional family, and their friends, solving supernatural crimes. There are a lot of ick factors in it (I've just finished watching a Netflix documentary about Epstein, so I'm kinda extra sensitive about stories involving minors), but the author does warn you what to skip if you're feeling iffy. I felt a bit bored near the end, I have no idea why, and it's strange because I enjoy both supernatural novels (especially ones where cultural legends and mythical creatures are involved) and crime novels.
