In today’s society, vampires are mostly accepted, though there are still those who don’t think vamps deserve to be trusted. Truth is they’re far superior to humans in every way, and a huge asset to the military and law enforcement. That’s where Saoirse Bronner comes in as one of the newest vamp officers on the force. When humans and vamps both start turning up dead, what better way to solve the case than to have humans and vamps working together?

Saoirse is teamed up with Detective Jake Valenti, who has his reservations at first about working with a vamp, but he quickly learns what an asset she is and how much he can learn from her. But personal feelings for the vamp were not expected at all. They adopt an honesty is the best policy approach for their partnership, and Jake soon learns she’s not all that different—other than the occasional need for blood to survive. And she really is far superior to humans, both physically and for his heart.

The police are trying to prove the lies the media is spreading about vamps isn’t true, but with the cases all pointing to vamps as the instigators isn’t helping their image. Tensions are high between vamps and humans, and a relationship between Jake and Saoirse will raise issues, but their time together could be ended before it even has time to start.

Dead vamps, dead humans, missing blood thinners, and a shady underground group. What does it all mean? Together, can they crack the case as well as protect their growing feelings for each other?

A novel take on vampirism, V Negative is a cop drama about rookie police officer, Saoirse Bronner—part of the new experimental vampire additions to the department—and her assigned partner, Detective Jake Valenti. When missing teens start popping up dead as doctored "vampire victims" and unknown dead vamps are found in their wake, the new vamp members of the department and their Detective partners must figure out what's going on. Who is trying to stir up anti-vamp sentiments and violence by staging them and leaving them out? And what is going on with the odd evidence tying them all together? What happens when Jake starts to realize that everything he thought he knew about the now-integrating vampires is wrong? And what is he going to do with the feelings that grow from this experience?

Like all of Mooney's work, this narrative is heavier on plot with a romantic thread that runs throughout but is not the central focus. It's a bit simplistic but does the job, leaving off in a lull in the action after the main events come to a head. Always HFNs that can reasonably be assumed will turn into HEAs.

“And if she can trust him with her life. She can trust him with her heart.”

This book came into my life through a really funny coincidence. I’m doing an alphabet reading challenge, and back in March when I needed a book starting with X, I scrolled through Storytel until I found one that stood out—and it was by Linda Mooney. Now, months later, I did the same thing for V—searched until something caught my eye—and once again, it ended up being Linda Mooney! I didn’t even realize it at first, but as soon as I saw her name again, I knew I’d enjoy it. Her stories combine all the genres I love—romance, mystery, supernatural—and they’re short, but still manage to feel complete (well, almost complete, but I’ll get to that).

V Negative is actually the first book I’ve read (or rather, listened to) where vampires are the main characters. I’ve watched vampire shows like The Vampire Diaries, but I’ve never read a story where the vampire element was front and center like this, and I really liked it! The romance especially stood out to me—it was a proper slow burn, which I always prefer over instant-love. Jake was amazing, and Saoirse was strong, grounded, and emotionally mature. They both knew what they wanted and communicated honestly from the start. No miscommunication drama—just two people being open with each other, which was refreshing.

One of my favorite parts was when Jake realized Saoirse was getting up extra early to catch the bus for work—and he just showed up to drive her the next morning. So sweet! And when her abusive, stalker ex Aaron started creeping back into her life, Jake immediately stepped up and gave her a safe place to stay. Their dynamic felt healthy and supportive, which made it easy to root for them.

Also, this might sound weird to people who don’t read paranormal romance, but I love the trope where the human lets the vampire drink their blood—it’s so intimate and symbolic. That moment between Jake and Saoirse was such a highlight for me.

There were parts of the story that I felt could’ve been stronger. The ending, for one, left me with a lot of questions. I get that murder cases don’t get solved overnight, but it felt like we were building toward something bigger, and then the resolution just… didn’t fully come. We met the people who kidnapped Saoirse and killed her best friend, but we never really got to see the actual murderers or fully understand the operation. I kept wondering if this was going to be the start of a series, but it looks like it’s a standalone, which made the unfinished feeling a bit frustrating.

Also—Cassidy. He was awful, and clearly on vampire blood, but his storyline just kind of… vanished? I was expecting more consequences or some final confrontation, but we didn’t get closure there either.

And then, the most emotional part of the book for me: the death of Saoirse’s best friend. It was genuinely heartbreaking. I knew it was coming, but I was still hoping it wouldn’t be her. When her brother broke down, I just knew it was her. And what made it worse was the regret—Saoirse remembering how she declined her friend’s offer to drive her home from the hospital… That moment hit hard. I almost teared up at work listening to that, and okay, maybe I was on my period, but still—it was a beautifully sad scene that really added depth to the story.

Overall, V Negative was surprisingly emotional, romantic, and suspenseful. It did so much in such a short amount of time. Honestly, I’ve read romance books from major publishers that didn’t come close to the chemistry or emotional payoff this one had. It’s kind of wild how few people have read it—barely any reviews on Goodreads, and I even had to add the book manually on StoryGraph. Where’s the hype for Linda Mooney?? Her books feel like hidden gems. They’re short, sharp, and give me everything I want: mystery, romance, supernatural drama, and just the right amount of angst.

So yeah—V Negative might not be perfect, but it was perfect for me. If you’re into vampires, slow burns, kind but badass love interests, and a little mystery, definitely give it a try.
