Good idea, but poorly designed. Very rushed development. Everything was played out too fast for the readers and that detracted from the story going deeper. Author wanted to make interesting plot wist, but none of them impacted me. All because the characters didn't have a good development.

A pity, initially it seemed to be promising, but was hampered by the author's anxiety to deliver an impactful story, it had the opposite effect.

It could have been told in a deeper and better way. It would be a stars 5 story if the author knew how to use the plot she created.

MM Romance
Vampire/Pup
NOT a stand-alone
2 Stars ⭐️

This book is weird and I can’t figure out if I want to keep reading the series. There are 5 parts to it and needs to be read in order. The gist is that vampires exist in the modern world but some of them are feral and kill/turn humans with no remorse so this ancient vampire picks a natural predator to train as his pup to take out the ferals. However, things don’t really go as planned and a bunch of wild shit happens.

This says dark but besides some murder I just didn’t feel the darkness. There’s some vamp characters that were just ridiculous and they made me laugh even though I think it was supposed to be scary? The thing is though I read this super fast and I enjoyed most of it. The ending made me super curious to see what happens to “the pup” but the fact I can’t remember either of the MCs names and I finished this yesterday doesn’t bode well. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Note: Despite this mentioning a pup, this is not pet play. And 3 stars was probably way too generous so I lowered it.

jaw cracking yawn 🥱

It's not like there was anything wrong with the book, I like the events and the plot and basically the whole of this book, but there wasn't... there wasn't any ZEST in the book. No THROBBING. No UGK I WANNA EAT THIS SHIT UP y'know?

There was just a lack of... a bit much of everything and add in how the book ended up becoming more plot heavy thus boring did not appeal to me at all and I had physically force myself to continue.

And what a shame y'all. Because that collar in that cover? I WANT IT AROUND MY NECK 🤌🏼

I thought the blurb of this book seemed really interesting - the execution however was seriously lacking. I found the writing tacky, disliked all characters and the plot wasn't following any perceivable logic.
This was just plain bad and there is nothing more I have to say about it.

I liked this well enough though there were a few inconsistencies in how the characters were written — nothing major but sometimes there would be leaps in emotions / thoughts that didn’t quite connect. The writing could’ve used some cleaning up too, I found myself having to reread multiple sentences to make sense of them.

As for the plot, it was engaging on paper (human captured by a vampire to become his pet and do his bidding) but its execution was missing… something. The twist at the end was alright but could have been explained more creatively — there are some aggressive humans out there.

Expect
- Forced proximity
- Powerplay
- D/s dynamics
- Vampire x human

This was said to be a dark mm romance with BDSM. It was a silly farce that wasn’t the least bit dark. I’m not really crazy about vampire books, but I thought I was going to read something exciting. It wasn’t. It was ok.

Was this dark? Not really. Was the story itself good? Debatable. Did I enjoy ever word of it? Most definitely.

I generally do not read and do not enjoy dark romances, but picked this to read for a reading bingo… it might not have checked that square, but it offered up plenty more. I found this to be one of the most amusing books I’ve read this year.

This is a little dark and it’s not over yet. This is only book one. There’s five in the series. But I feel like their love was very violent. I don’t even know if it’s love. Anyways, the ending wasn’t like a cliffhanger, there is more to come. I felt like the story was a little dark and they have a pain kink that was very present. A love hate relationship I guess you would say. I did enjoy it. And I do feel like it’s a good read.

Feel free to ignore this as it is less of a review and more of food for thought for those who might be interested in this book. Also spoilers I guess but considering how I only got to the 20% mark before I bowed out, I don't know how spoilery this truly is.

Anyways, so Maddox and Will. They're fine I guess. There was even a moment that would have been cute and quirky had I cared about them, but there wasn't enough to establish either character to make me care. Especially Will. I'm sure he gets better but he's kind of awful in the beginning. Like, he's not a dynamic character at all nor is he someone I really want to read about or root four. Maddox is whatever. People are going to find him hot and stick around for the smut. I need more than that these days.

Here's why I dnf'd it. It is revealed that Maddox has acquired Will not just because he wants a pet/companion, but because he needs someone to hunt his own kind... I'm going to let that sit with y'all for a moment and when you're ready you can tell me how this makes any sense. And the more Maddox explains the less sense it makes. Why would the government hire a vampire to hunt other vampires? Except he's not actually hunting other vampires, he's using humans to hunt them. And he's hunting them because they are young and overfeeding. Wouldn't that be most vampires? And why pick a human for this job?? Mama, miss ma'am, if you can find the logic, please share the coordinates because I am all kinds of Lost.

I am sure this all starts to make sense later on, but this one Isn't for me. I like when paranormal books focused on either paranormals coexisting together or monsters beings monsters who use humans. And if it's going to stay in an urban fantasy setting, I need some logic. I'm sure a lot of people will enjoy this. It's pretty short and the writing isn't bad (it ain't great either but I digress). Tl;Dr if you're expecting depraved monster smut, this isn't it.

I really wanted to like this. First chapter, I would have said I would. And then it slowly but surely fell apart. I think it had a LOT of potential but just kept not following through.

I wouldn’t really say the romance is anything. I felt like the authors writing style was good, but I just generally felt like the story was dull. Even when it came to the big reveal it kinda came out of nowhere and was wayyyy too easy. The sex scenes weren’t detailed enough to really be hot, plus there was really a lack of emotion other than maybe submission and dominance.

Predators by Loki Renard is a dark MM urban fantasy paranormal romance that I listened to on audio narrated by Theo Sinclair. This is the first book in the Vampire Kings series.

This is the second book of Loki's that I have read, and it won't be my last. I am intrigued by the relationship between Will and Maddox. I can't wait to see how it will progress over the course of the series.

Theo did a great job on the narration. I look forward to listening to more of his work in the future.

I would recommend this book if you like MM romances, paranormal romances, or urban romances.

Maddox frees Will from prison. Will is a murderer.
Will is to be a pet to Madds beast and so much more. He was a bad guy, now he's food.
There are secrets to be revealed and much more s@x, which for me, is hot as can be. I'm looking forward to the next book!

DNF at 51%, I was going to struggle on with this one but, upon reading a few fellow goodread reviews I don't see this book getting any better. The sex scenes are short and dull, I mean come on, with that cover you expect a little more. This book doesn't read at all like what this is marketed as, I feel tricked. I'm halfway through this book and there's nothing to look forward to. I feel no connection to any of the characters and not much happened. I don't think this is the series I'm looking for which is sad because the blurb sounded so good.

While the storyline has potential, the book itself is... lacking.

Renard is unable to really connect with Their characters in order to bring them to life. The characters' personalities and behaviours are severely contradictory to how they are repeatedly described to actually be -something that is very evident almost immediately. All of this is only exacerbated by it not being done in First Person.

Renard comes across less as an author of several books, and more like a girl in her early teens who has no real concept of the Darkness within some People.
Moments of brutality showed only surface comprehension of the acts without any real intimate understanding. In Reality, they were merely shallow attempts to convey things far more Sinister.

This book proved to be a disappointment almost straight away and never managed to rectify that -even as expectations got lower and lower.

Refreshing, cheeky, entertaining, interesting and exciting - a bit fast at times and not as Dark as expected - really very good and so delicious, almost devourable in one go if the real world wasn't always vying for attention!

Predators is the first book in the Vampire Kings series by Loki Renard and is Maddox and Will's story.

Maddox has been watching Will in prison for the last year and has an ultimatum for him, stay in jail or come with him. Will decides to take Maddox up on his offer but is unaware of the deal he made with the devil.

Predators is my first book by Loki Renard and unfortunately, I think it will be the only one. The blurb for this book sounded so promising but just did not match how I thought the book was going to play out. Things were going ok until a side character was introduced and basically took over the story.

This was also my first narration by Theo Sinclair and I did enjoy him as a narrator as a whole but his inconsistency with Will's accent really got to me by the end of the audiobook. I will give Theo another shot as I did enjoy his voice.

Get ready for... mm, paranormal, dark, urban fantasy, BDSM, dual first-person pov.

Dnf@32%. Wow, this was not what I expected from the amazing blurb. The characters were pretty meh and made random choices and decisions that didn't seem logical for what was happening.

Like The vamp training a human to hunt other vamps? How and why? Why don't more powerful vamps just hunt these humans or why doesn't the vamp turn will into a vamp and then make him hunt vamps? And the whole puppy thing gives me werewolf vibes that just never really clicked.

Also, will jumping out the window to escape even tho the drop is deadly and he has a tracking collar around his neck. Is he suposed to be impulsive or stupid? Because everything he's done, from beating the guard to jumping out the window makes him seem kinda dumb.

Finally, the smut is super lackluster. Its short, boring and nondescript. For how dark the premise and blurb, I expected a lot of build up, steam and mental games. But the smut just seems smacked in there just to say its there and Maddox is way more bark than bite since he's pretty light handed with Will and Will doesn't even seem to care enough for it to be dubcon.

Yeah, idk. I thought this looked awesome by the cover and blurb. Very disappointed in what it really was.

I loved this book! I read a few other books by this author and enjoyed them, but as soon as I saw this audiobook and that it was a MM romance I was beyond excited. Great world building. I really loved all the characters. Their personalities were all different and it really made each one stand out apart from each other. I loved the dynamic between Maddox and Will. As a vampire with an overall calm personality, Madd easily drew my attention. But I found I was completely enthralled with Will, too. There was violence in him, but also loyalty, and I liked how he was with Madd. I also really liked Lorien. He was a sassy thing, and a lot of fun.

I listened to this on audiobook narrated by Theo Sinclair. This was my first time listening to Theo and I am in love. All the characters had distinct voices/accents and were easy to differentiate between. I loved his use of different tones. I will probably hunt around for more books he's narrated just to hear more of his voice work.

I am beyond excited for the next book! I looked them up and discovered the the entire series has concluded in ebook. Now I'm at war with myself if I should read them all or if I have the strength to hold out so I can listen to them first.

Performance: 5 stars
Story: 5 stars
