Dawn Ross isn't just a wife and mother or entrepreneur and volunteer. She's also an artist and writer. Her first love was drawing nature and wildlife, but she was also a daydreamer. One day, those dreams got too big to fit inside her head. So, she decided to write them down. A fantasy trilogy was her first endeavor. They did well but as her education and writing experience grew, she realized she wanted to do something new and better. And so began her sci-fi series. Her sci-fi novels have a little science but are mostly space-fantasy dramas. Though they are set far into the future, you will find many of the same modern-day societal problems such as greed, war, hate, prejudice, etc.

Dawn Ross has a degree in finance, but works at Meals on Wheels part time and as a writer part time. She is married and has a wonderful son. She is an animal lover and currently has an Australian Shepherd mix.

“Emotion is not a weakness, my Lord. It’s the one thing that makes you a man rather than a mindless machine.”

As in the previous installment of the Dragon Spawn Chronicles, Dragon's Fall continues to explore the theme of emotions and how they define a person's humanity. In this book, Dawn Ross has chosen to focus on Terkeshi, the fourteen year old son of the emperor. Throughout the book he struggles to reconcile his empathy, a trait he has learned from his younger brother, with the emotionless obedience that his father demands.

It was a bold choice to focus on Terk. A character that was, in my opinion, quite unlikable in the first book and was truly deserving of the rhyming nickname, Terk the Jerk. But by this book that unlikable character has transformed into a deeply complex individual that you can't help to root for to overcome his oppressive upbringing.

This is my favorite installment of the series so far. While we are introduced to another faction of humanity, The Cyborgs, they take a back seat to Terk's story. This was a powerful choice by Ross because it allowed her to tell a deeply moving character driven story.

That's not to say there isn't a lot of action, there is! It is also a much darker story than it's predecessors with a couple of scenes of explicit violence. I didn't find these as gratuitous but as needed components to fully tell Terk's story.

In this book, Ross stakes out uncharted territory and makes her universe unique. I highly recommend it and can't wait for book 4!

Sci-fi at its Best

Book 3 of this series is an excellent continuation of a great storyline. It is full of action, intrigue and adventure. The characters continue to grow and are easy to identify with. I really like this book and I highly recommend it.

Waiting for Book 4

This is a very exciting story and series! Though it is a coming of age story about two brothers and the author keeps reminding you of their ages, the world building didn't support it. Forget what you know about 10 and 14 yo boys, these boys don't act like that.

Brutal dysfunctional family loosely based in the future and in space. Not to impressed or entertained. Read first 3 books but no need to continue, just not what I like.
