The storm of the century. A ghost city. Law enforcement all but suspended.
Hurricane Matthew is a force to be reckoned with. It has been forecasted to drown the city of Houston in an unrelenting torrent of rain. In the days before its arrival, the city was evacuated, leaving behind only a skeleton police force and civilians unable to flee its destructive path.
It’s the perfect time and the perfect place for the perfect crime.
Richter has it all figured out. A professional with years of experience, he leads a group of similar professionals that have seen and done it all. The plan goes down without a hitch, just as Richter envisioned. It’s everything else that goes off the rails.
Forced to seek refuge in an abandoned apartment building to wait out the storm, Richter crosses paths with a police officer and her partner. They think they’re each other’s worst enemies, but they’re wrong. Very wrong. There is a creature of endless hunger waiting in the shadows, and it’s ready to feed.
The Last Storm is an interesting, ghoulish story of surviving a hurricane outside, while fighting an unknown creature inside. It’s perfect reading for October.
This is my first Sisabath novel, and I may read more. I have to admit, at times I felt like he was pressuring with a word count, because he jabbered and repeated quite a bit. It didn’t hurt the story, but it was a tad annoying. …annoying…
Here’s a wonderfully creepy horror story about two groups of people who take refuge in an abandoned high rise to escape a hurricane. One group is a criminal team who has just pulled off a robbery. The other is two cops, a prisoner, and a civilian mother and her seven-year-old child. The tension between the two groups is great and could have made a thriller-style tale, but that’s not what Sisavath has in store of the reader. There’s something supernatural happening in the abandoned high rise and he expertly increases the tension as bad things start to happen to the large cast.
One of the cops makes what I think was a major mistake when the trouble starts to heat up. She and her group have been taken prisoner and there is no hint at this time that the criminals intend to do them the ultimate wrong. But she tries to escape anyway with many serious unintended consequences—and that not only ups the tension, it fuels the supernatural storyline.
The novel quickly falls into the “who will survive” type of tale, but Sisavath makes it very interesting. He also does a good job of letting the reader learn a lot about the supernatural threat without actually telling anything about it. If he makes one mistake, I think it is in the ending when I expected the supernatural—I’ll call it a curse even though Sisavath avoids that term—to be passed on to one of the survivors. I don’t want to say more as I don’t want to spoil the story. Even without this “the threat is not really over” problem, it’s a very good tale.
This one is about an obayifo (vampire/witch-like folklore creature from West Africa). Two groups of people are caught out in the middle of Hurricane Matthew hitting Houston, so they decide to seek shelter in a high-rise building. One group is a criminal team of seven who have just pulled off a robbery of two silver crosses. The other group consists of two police officers, their prisoner, and a stranded mother and her seven-year-old child. After initial tensions between the two groups meeting, the group come to the realization that something is residing in this deserted building, something that is starting to take victims one by one. Their only hope is to work together in hunting down this creature.
The only negative was the disjointed writing style as each chapter started with re-hash from the previous chapter as seen by another character. The standard "typical" characters were a bit mundane and the story had a lot of "Die Hard" feel to it. All that was missing was:
Obayifo - a West African bogey man / vampire / demon
5 crooks, 2 police, 3 civilians including a mother/daughter pair are trapped inside an abandoned housing project by the unyielding fury of Matthew - a level 5 hurricane battering the eastern coast of Texas. Sheltered together away from the rising waters of the storm surge, the ten are warily cooperating, until one by one they fall victim to the Obafiyo, according to the young Nigerian man on the crooks' team. Ten characters combine to face their worst fears. And the terror of the relentless storm is as nothing against the horror claiming them. A terrifying storyline written by a master of the horror genre, with an amazing cast of characters, form the perfect storm to keep me awake, glued to the screen of my Fire tablet all night and into the early morning. Terrifying - yes! A great read!
Creepy, engrossing, and pretty well written overall. Slight Steven King horror vibes— reminded me a bit of ‘Desperation’.
In the midst of a hurricane, a group of 7 thieves find themselves waiting out the storm in a long abandoned apartment building. Two cops show up with 3 civilians in tow, also looking for temporary shelter. Tension between the two groups grow, not helped by the ever worsening storm battering Houston and the mysterious disappearance of one of the thieves. One by one, members of the group are picked off. Eventually, they band together as they realize they’re all up against a supernatural creature called an Obayifo which is hunting them. The pace of the plot picks up more and more as the book progresses, and it all culminates in the final 4 making it out. Highly engaging book, enjoyed reading it.

Trapped in a Category Five Hurricane in Houston, Tx., two policemen ( 1 female and 1 male ) inside a twenty story plus dilapidated and ancient tenement building with 3 civilians - a petty thief and a small girl with her mother who were rescued from the streets by the police, they are confronted and taken prisoner by a ring of professional thieves also sheltering from the fury of the hurricane. Unknown to either group, something "else" deadly beyond belief is residing in this deserted building along with many corpses mutilated, savaged, and partially devoured. As they start to be killed by the entity, a decision is agreed upon.... the only hope any of them have to survive is to band together against a much more deadly and common enemy. At least, that is their hope.... A unique and frightening tale of sheer horror!
Well this is a new one for me….this book had creep factor 100%. Aside from the creepy “ monster “ because seriously, I’ve never read anything like this particular being before, and I hope there’s some sort of back story in the next book. With that said, the characters were likable, funny, annoying, interesting and intelligent, some more than others. The only thing that annoyed me was the author doesn’t know his up from down lol. There were a couple scenarios in the stairwell of the apartment building where this is taking place. I don’t know how someone can be running down the stairs from the 10th floor and end up on the 17th, but that’s just me. Overall, this was a good read, really creepy with a twist of mystery here and there. Moving forward to the next book.
I couldn’t put this book down and read in two sittings. Mr. Sisavath is very good at tapping my spooky bone. The terror of the hurricane combined with a creature strong enough to carry a large grown man away and darkness is excellent. I was very sad Rictcher was killed off and Dutch. I do love the power of the silver crosses. Like Purge of Babylon, the creatures are allergic to silver and the religious aspect gives the extra goosebumps. Blue eyed monsters super similar to Purge of Babylon creatures. Creepy as f**k.

Big fan of horror books. This one was not a good read in my opinion. It had a couple of moments that got interesting and I was like “oh it’s finally getting good” and then bam, back to sucking. I kept waiting for it to get better but made it 75% of the way and just can’t finish it. The writing was very hard to follow and just did not get the imagination flowing to paint the picture. Couldn’t stand Torres. Plus the way it bounces around and repeats scenarios was really annoying.
I didn't know that this book was a prequel to “The road of Babylone” series when I picked it. The sequel is good, but the prequel? You can see that the author have matured a lot between them. That book is genial! The first of the series is in a “milieu clos”, a genre that I love very much! You have to master your art to make an excellent story, when you can't rely on a lot of characters, places and so. An atypical cast of characters for an atypical vampire-ish story.
Very solid read that picked up around halfway. It has character focus and a unique threat for those trapped inside this apartment during a hurricane. I enjoyed the paperback and every time I got to relax and read I found myself sucked into the combustion as it built up. A couple cops seek shelter at the same time as a gang of crooks and we watch as something greater threatens them all. I don’t want to spoil what will for sure be a blast of a read to find out what’s going on and which precious survivors will see the final page.
A decent read from this author. The plot moves fairly quickly and is easy to follow and is circular in nature. A different take on a Vampire/monster novel does not answer the main question. From this authors' previous series, even though set in the same city. Still has a lot of self conversations, but with a decent twist. That there a lot of the same scenes played out from different character points of view. I look forward to more from this author.
Loved every minute of it. The characters came to life quickly and brilliantly. Torres, Dutch, Macy and the rest grew to be real and close very effectively. Once the killing started, it was blow after blow, relentless and, sometimes, surprising. A modern very imaginative retelling of whatever your favorite "things that go bump in the night", if you like supernatural horror you owe it to yourself to give this book a read. Highly recommended.
I read a lot of books that I don't complete because it's always the same old thing this story was good, fast paced definitely written well didn't really like the vampires / Boogeyman idea I think Sam could come up with something better. He's already used this/creature before either way it was still good I read it all the way through and that's saying something you like Fast Paced horror with some gore you will enjoy this
The author totally had me with the setting and the story. Historic storm. Shady people, shady apartment buildings, slowly cranking the dials for dread up bit by bit. No spoilers, but I gotta tell you, even though I’m familiar with the authors writings, I still wasn’t sure what we were dealing with here until it was spelled out. A fantastic read, can’t wait for the next one!
Wow! I did not expect the direction this book took. There is a catastrophic hurricane approaching Texas. An unlucky resident and a young child are caught in the flooding. Saved by local law enforcement, they take refuge in a mostly abandoned high rise building. I said mostly. Inside an organized group of criminals have been contacted to do something.... It goes really bad. Warning - there is excessive profanity resulting in 4 stars.
Back in 2014 I read the Purge of Babylon and through that made a lifelong friend. We discussed the book and all the sequels at length. One burning question remained and finally Sam has answered it in this book. Thank you. Needless to say that I love this book. More please
I’ve been a fan since the very first book, and this one may actually be my fav. No Keo, but I liked the cast of characters. The setting was good, and it was nice to have a stand-alone story. It’s been awhile, but please correct me if these aren’t the crosses that Will and Danny find in the first book.
I did enjoy the first third of this story, then unfortunately I found I was sort of loosing interest with the whole thing. Great to start, Huston is flooding & a mix of strangers get trapped together in an abandoned motel. I did finish but was very unenthusiastic with the last part. Maybe I have just read too much horror!
The book was interesting in its concept. It kept me reading. I liked the back and forth between everyone's POV. What I didn't like is how during a hurricane he kept mentioning the sunlight or moonlight coming in through the windows. In all life, I've never seen sunlight during a storm. Maybe light...just saying.
Sisavath has done it again. He's one of my favorite authors. His characters are written in depth and are believable. His storyline s are creative. There's lots of action with unexpected results.. This is a must read story. It's well worth your time. You won't regret it.
Wow this was my first read from this author and genre and it did not disappoint. I was hooked and was really vested in all the characters. There was a crew where three had a real bond, a pair of cops and three civilians. Who knew seeking shelter from a hurricane would lead to loss and new allies from something that goes bump in the dark.
I recommend this book to anyone looking for a few hours of creepy, scary stuff. Loved the characters. They start as strangers but then you find that you care about them. This is the first book I have read by this author and I will be looking for more. Thanks Sam.
I started this book knowing there was some kind of beastie involved. By about a third of the way in, I had decided it was a vampire. Then, at a little over 50% in, I discovered there are things scarier than vampires. Great character development. Heart-pounding action. Scary, scary beastie. I love it!
How this ain’t gotten a movie deal yet is beyond me. It’s got a set area a mix cast of original chacthers a monster blends western and African mythology depending on the victim belief and a bad-ass female cop. All I’m saying for the people in Hollywood to see the writing get to working on a movie now
Which can be good or bad, depending on your outlook. Decent story with no surprises if you're a reader of his books. (See headline) There's a racist lean (Mickey character) to his writing that I quickly grew tired of which made the book less enjoyable for me.
It is a great story with similar themes in Sisvath’s work but this time in a setting that adds a new twist and completely different world and as always wonderful characters with their own journeys.
