At the edge of a forest, a husband and wife are driving through the winding lanes. When a song comes on the radio, the song that brought the high-school sweethearts together on a dancefloor forty years ago, they turn to each other. That split second – a stolen glance as memories wash over them – is one of their last. Moments later, their car crashes.
Yet from tragedy, comes hope…
Two strangers lie in hospital, their lives hanging in the balance. After a near-fatal accident, it’s a miracle that Zach survived. And with a life-long heart condition, Chloe didn’t think she would make it past her twenties.
But that day, Chloe and Zach’s lives are saved when they each receive a heart. Gifted a rare second chance, it’s up to them not to waste it – to make the most of every moment.
They don’t know it, but they are inextricably linked. And until Chloe and Zach find one another – two hearts searching for their missing part – their new lives can never begin… Will they be able to find each other before it’s too late?
An absolutely beautiful and heartbreaking tale that will make you reach for the tissues but ultimately leave you with a smile. Fans of Jojo Moyes, Jodi Picoult and Diane Chamberlain will fall head over heels for this emotional and unforgettable story about making every second count.

What a beautifully written story this is. The story is told by Mike, Susan, Zach and Chloe's points of view. It flips back and forth between present the day and the past. It will also pull at your heartstrings. Organ donation is such an emotional rollercoaster, someone's gain is another families loss, but the author has covered it sensitively. This is a story of love and second chances.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #Bookouture and the author #CatherineMiller for my ARC of #TheCrash in exchange for an honest review.
Have you ever wondered if transplant recipients become inextricably linked to their donor’s spouse or family? Just me?! I’ll never forget how I felt at receiving a letter from a sweet lady who received my father-in-law’s corneas. She was overjoyed at her first Christmas being able to see her grandchildren. I keep the letter in a safe spot and yes, I’m on the organ donor list.
Miller will sweep you away with her tender story about the 4 people involved in a transplant operation; 2 donors and 2 recipients. She’ll remind you to make every second count as we never know when our last breath will be.
I don’t want to spoil anything, so I won’t tell you any more. Be prepared to feel something as two of the heart recipients - two hearts searching for their missing part - find each other. Slowly and tenderly the story progresses as the author shares the backstories that lead to the 4 people arriving at the hospital. The characters are so well crafted and I became emotionally involved in each and their future. Miller taps into the hopes, fears and dreams of the two women as they try to define their relationships and shows that despite appearing to have very little in common, they share what really matters.
A must-read for anyone who loves epic love stories, stories about a second chance at love, or those curious about the donor-recipient transplant bond. If you’ve read The Girl Who Couldn’t Leave, the same warm, fluid, heartfelt writing is continued in this book.
I was gifted this advance copy by Catherine Miller, Bookouture, and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
I received an eARC of this book from NetGalley and the publisher.
I was intrigued by the Publisher’s summary of “The Crash” by Catherine Miller. It sounded like, forgive the expression, a book I would read, enjoy, and get all the feels from (sometimes I just want to read a book that makes me cry).
I’ve seen and read stories about people receiving hearts and reuniting with the donor’s family to “hear” the heartbeat or the person who can see more clearly. Organ donation is such a personal topic and I felt that Ms. Miller presented it in a touching and sensitive manner.
In this book, Mike and Susan are killed and their hearts are acceptable matches for Zach and Chloe. Zach’s heart (Mike’s) ‘searches’ for Susan’s heart (now in Chloe). I hadn’t heard about cellular memory in heart transplants before this book, but it’s a real theory. It all sounded so promising, but for some reason, this book just didn’t evoke the emotions I wanted. Mike and Susan, after 40 years of marriage, were having issues - not major ones, but minor ones, that can come over time. But for some reason, their backstory work for me and I found myself skimming over their sections sometimes. Zach seemed to be more “aggressive” than Chloe in wanting to be friends, but, again, it just felt off sometimes. I guess because this book was full of emotions, it just didn’t work for me and I actually considered DNF at the 50% mark, but decided to continue reading to see how things would work out. I cannot explain why this didn’t work, as I really wanted it to, but something was off … which I found disappointing. I so wanted to like (and cry) this book … but it didn’t happen. I'm giving this a 3 star rating based upon the Goodread's scale of "liked it" - I did like parts of it (the sensitivity toward organ donation, Chloe's health issues, and Zach and Larry's job/organization), but I cannot say that I "really" liked the book.
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Catherine Miller, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous
Publication date 30th March 2022.
This is the third book I have read by this author. I have previously read Catherine's 'The Missing Piece' and 'The Girl Who Couldn't Leave' which I highly recommend.
I was originally drawn to this book by its gorgeous eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that 'Fans of Jojo Moyes, Jodi Picoult and Diane Chamberlain will fall head over heels for this unforgettable story about making every second count.' I am a huge fan of all three of those authors so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I am also a huge fan of Catherine and if this is half as good as 'The Missing Piece and' The Girl Who Couldn't Leave' it is sure to be an epic read. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of a prologue, 52 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short to medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is based in England 🏴, UK 🇬🇧. The bonus for me of books that are partly or fully based in the UK is that I live in the UK and have sometimes visited places mentioned in the book which makes it easier to picture. I have actually visited and had holidays in England on several occasions so am looking forward to seeing if I recognise anywhere that Catherine has based the book on.
This book is written in third person perspective and the main protagonists are Zack, Chloe, Mike and Susan. The benefits of third person perspective with multiple protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.
Congratulations Catherine on yet another fantastic page turner!!! An absolute must read with vivid descriptions that set the scene for you. The cover, title and synopsis suit the storyline perfectly.
Grab the tissues and clear your schedules as you will not be able to put this down!!!
I think one of the things I enjoyed most about this storyline is that although it was both heart warming and heart breaking it actually carries an extremely important message on how important donations are whether blood, marrow or organ and how your donation can save someone's life. I regularly donate blood and am on the list for marrow and although several people do this many more are always needed. Congratulations Catherine, I don't belive I've ever actually read another book that highlights the importance organ donations before especially during such an enjoyable storyline. If you can get yourselves booked in to donate blood, marrow or sign up to be an organ donor!!
The storyline is realistic and filled with love, loss, heartbreak, tears, important messages, fun, tragedies, romance, family and more. I was completely absorbed from the first page until late at night when I could only put it down because I'd finished it. A light hearted full of love and hope page turner with a serious message. It is a gorgeous book and can be read in the sun or curled up next to the fire. I was completely invested in the storyline throughout and on several occasions my heart was in my throat with what was happening. Make sure you read to the end where you will disciver Catherine's personal story that was extremely touching especially as I also have twins myself. The moment where several people met up (I won't say more than that as I don't want to spoil it for future readers) was extremely touching and definitely had me reaching for the tissues.
It is set over multiple time lines. When books show what has happened in the past and what is happening in the present I find it really helps the reader (if it is well done) understand why things are happening and what has lead to the present activities and decisions. It also shows the bigger picture. I love the fact that we could see what both Susan and Mike were doing previously and what led them to what happened.
This would make an absolutely stunning movie that I would love to watch!!
I was completely invested in the characters and I loved Zack, Chloe, Mike and Susan's characters. I also really enjoyed meeting Larry, Alice and Leona. They were all larger than life, realistic, strong and very likeable. I really enjoyed watching their friendship and relationship between not only Chloe and Zack grow but also Zack's friendship with Larry and Chloe's relationship with Alice and Leona. Larry was an amazing friend to Zack throughout and it was lovely to see such a close male bond between friends. Chloe was also very lucky to have such amazing sisters in Alice and Leona who stood by and supported her every step of the way. I would love to have a sister half as amazing and supportive as they were. I adored Chloe and Susan immediately but I must admit there were several moments were both Zack and Mike needed a stern talking to with some of the things they both did. However, they both realised their mistakes and I grew to enjoy their characters more afterwards. I really enjoyed Chloe and Zack's development throughout the book and loved watching them grow from strength to strength. A great eclectic mix of characters who worked perfectly for this storyline.
ABSOLUTELY loved this book Catherine and here's to hoping you've started on your next page turner. Watch out JoJo Moyes, Jodi Picoult, Nicholas Sparks and Diane Chamberlain you have some serious competition here!!
Overall an unputdownable addictive emotional rollercoaster drama with a sprinkle of love, heartbreak, friendship and a serious message.
Genres covered in this novel include Fiction, Romance and Contemporary Fiction amongst others.
I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of JoJo Moyes, Jodi Picoult, Nicholas Sparks, Diane Chamberlain and anyone who loves a good read.
297 pages.
This book is just £1.99 to purchase on kindle via Amazon or free on kindle unlimited (at time of review) which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!
Rated 5/5 (I LOVED it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.

This was my second read of Catherine Miller’s books and just like The missing piece this was heartbreaking and heartwarming in equal measure. With hearts playing a major part in both books this time it’s around organ donation.
I have to say I instantly remembered the warmth of her writing as I was drawn into the story of Susan and Mike. From their meeting at the school disco to their stale marriage many years later and Susan’s idea of recapturing the spark.
Then out of nowhere along comes Zach with a chainsaw in his chest. No you did not read that wrong! It surprised me too. This was taking a turn rapidly and then I discovered he had been making a safety video about using chainsaws and the cleaner had accidentally plugged it in along with the hoover. Ironic and strangely amusing.
Also we meet Chloe who although her heart is in trouble she had mine from the get go and now she is about to get another.
This book while highlighting the importance of organ donation also manages a unique twist with organ memory. An original premise beautifully told with excuse the pun “real heart”. Characters that are ordinary people giving or receiving an extraordinary gift and second chances in more ways than one!
I’m always drawn to a ‘What If’ story. Maybe not probable but who really knows. This is definitely one of those heartwarming stories that focus on love and the benefits of organ donation. Slow and drawn out in parts, the story line was intriguing nonetheless. No great mystery but it was a sweet, and somewhat inspirational read. If you take away one thing, it should be to be an Organ Donor! This is a new author for me and would definitely give her another look!
A high school couple fall in lave and marry, have children. Forty years later, facing retirement the marriage is stale. Susan is trying to keep the marriage together so she plans a surprise getaway. Mike is skeptical, dealing with his own issues. Unfortunately, life changes dramatically.
Zach meets with a near fatal accident. Chloe has been sick from birth. These two are inexplicably drawn together during a hospital stay. Zach thinks he know why but will anyone believe him?
Thanks to Ms. Miller, Bookouture, and NetGalley for this ARC. Opinion is mine alone.
I was intrigued by the premise of this book – the effect of cellular memory in a transplant patient, whereby some of the donor’s memories and personality characteristics are experienced by the recipient. Unfortunately, the writing style and character development was disappointing.
The story reflects the experiences of Mike and Susan (the donors) and Zach and Chloe (the recipients) in alternating chapters covering the past and present. I found the pace agonizingly slow at times with much repetition of the back story and relationship dynamics between the characters. While Zach and Chloe’s medical conditions engendered sympathy, the breakdown of the relationship of the donor couple was not particularly engaging.
The core message of the storyline is that love survives even the death of the physical body and that life is a precious gift to be appreciated and celebrated.
My thanks to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for the privilege of reviewing this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I am super stingy with my stars, so for this to rate 5, it says a lot. I can totally see this as a Netflix series or even a Hallmark movie. I couldn’t put it down and didn’t want it to end. Mike and Susan are school sweethearts that are about to celebrate 40 years of marriage. As their marriage has gone on, they’ve become more distant and living as roommates more than lovers. As their anniversary approaches, Susan decides to give it one last go and book them a holiday away and see if there’s anything left to rekindle or if it’s time to pack it in. Zack is a good old boy who’s had his heart broken figuratively and literally-he was injured in a freak accident that required a transplant not long after his ex messed with his heart and he hadn’t fully recovered. Chloe has been in and out of hospital all her life after being born with a heart defect. Her sisters are super protective over her, especially after their parents passed away when they were younger. While on their way back from the cruise, ready to start rebuilding their lives together, Mike and Susan die in a crash that no one could have predicted and it changed everything for everyone, including Zack and Chloe. Are Zack and Chloe connected by their donor hearts? They don’t realize how connected they are until they are apart and all their hearts want to do is be together again. Each chapter is told from the POV of the various characters and is so well written, so emotional and heartfelt, I couldn’t stop reading. I read it all in one sitting. It really makes you think about making every moment count.
After forty years together, teenage sweethearts Mike and Susan are tragically killed in a car crash.
Zack endures a freak accident, that sees him fatally wounded, but a donor heart could save him.
Chloe has had a weak heart all her life, but just as her own heart is ready to give up, a donor heart becomes available.
The Crash, tells the story of Mike and Susan’s last chapter together as they depart this world. Still here, with new hearts, Zack and Chloe have to recover and learn to live a new life, but in order to move forward, they both need to listen to their hearts.
I loved the whole idea of this book. The story is unique and I certainly didn’t feel like I had read anything like it before.
On the whole, I liked the characters. At times I wanted to give Zack a shake, but he was a real sweetie at heart. I loved the friendship between Zack and Larry. We could all do with a Larry in our lives.
This story is beautifully written and flows effortlessly. It’s full of love, friendship, grief, heartache, hope and happiness.
If you fancy a love story, with a bit of a difference, The Crash, definitely delivers.
A tender story of love, loss and hope. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Out on 30/3/22 in paperback and on Ebook.
With thanks to #Netgalley and #Bookouture for a digital arc of #TheCrash by #CatherineMiller.
This is a highly emotive, moving and incredible read, Full of memories, love and hope for those in need. It starts with the crash that triggers the rest And moves on to prove to be one of the best!
It is the story of four people involved in transplant surgery The two donor and the recipients as you'll soon see. Get ready to be swept away And encouraged to make the most of opportunities every day.
It is a story of two hearts Who fate endeavoured to keep apart. But the hearts are filled with love for each other And won't be happy till their partner they re-discover.
There are two love stories skilfully entwined One starting forty years ago, the second only just being defined. The stories are told from each separate timeline, Showing how their path start to combine.
It is a story filled with both highs and lows A tale full of hearts in which love grows. A beautiful story, inspirational, too That I can't recommend highly enough to you.
For my complementary copy of this book, I say thank you, A superb read and this is my honest review.
The Crash by Catherine Miller is an intriguing story with layers of emotion, love, disappointments, and renewal. The lives of two couples are dramatically changed by fate. The first couple, Mike and Susan, plan a trip to rekindle their marriage. On their way back home, their favorite song comes on the radio which causes them to look at each other with love in their eyes. Zack and Chloe meet after they have both received heart transplants. Zack feels an immediate connection to Chloe from the first time they meet. As they spend more time together, they notice changes in their thoughts and feelings. Could there be a mysterious physical link to their organ donors? Does a physical body part such as a heart retain a sense of being? A thoughtful and sweet love story with twists. I loved this book! Publication Date: March 30, 2022 Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and publisher for the opportunity to read this book.
The crash tells the tale of two donor heart recipients and that of the two donors! Organ donation is such an emotional, harrowing topic as some ones loss is some one else’s gain but this was told in such an empathetic, sensitive manner and it was interesting to see the process from both angles. The crash explores how recipients of the donor hearts feel and if there is a tenuous link to their donors, their characteristics, lives, dreams etc. we are taken on a voyage of discovery as the recipients find each other, prove that they have a connection, meet the donors family and gradually fall in love! A really thought provoking read. Thank you netgalley for this early read.
Good points. Easy to read I liked the breakdown of chapters by character. Loved Zach and his friendship with his best friend.
After that it got a bit hallmark/Netflix. I’ve seen a couple of films very similar and this could definitely be on TV. Too many cliches for me and ‘happy’ coincidences. I enjoyed it. Would be a good book to take on holiday but prefer a little bit more meat on the bones!
Such an amazing story that stole my heart and kept me enthralled and entertained throughout. A beautiful story of second chances and love, it was a moving tale of people meeting through destiny and chance. I don’t want to give away any spoilers, it’s a brilliant story with adorable characters and some real oh my goodness moments too!
This book is about organ donation, and the question of what lives on after you die...
This type of book is up my alley. You have death, romance, love, drama.... Two characters who receive donated hearts from a couple who died are drawn to each other. I am so ready for the schmaltz....
So... I didn't cry.
Why am I telling you this? because I cry at everything! I love a good book that makes me cry. I cry at Nicholas Sparks books even though I know he is manipulating me. I sobbed at FireFly Lane, and In An Instant - sobbed, I tell you. Now we have a book that should be so touching, and bittersweet, and I didn't shed a tear. Not one.
I was torn the entire book. Was this really touching or too over the top to be believed? I wanted to suspend disbelief - I really did.. If I love a book, you could tell me the moon was made of green cheese and I would go with it. So... I guess I have the answer - I don't know why, but I didn't love it. I actually found myself rolling my eyes once or twice..
Why is this review so difficult? I kept reading this book. I WANTED to know what happened next.
My advice - get this from the library.. I do want to thank the author, the publisher and #netgalley for the ARC which did not impact my review.
This one was assigned, if you will, by my church book club. The members don't often look specifically for Christian fiction and this isn't one.
I've been a Christian most of my life, but I only really became part of the Christian fiction world in this last decade. Now, I can't read anything without that lens--and I am glad.
This is billed as an unputdownable romance, but I did put it down--I came back to finish because I like to finish what I start, but I am so saddened by people not having Christ in their lives. How do they handle such a loss? They turn to strange ideas and cling to physical reminders. They seemingly have no hope other than a bodily organ living on in the life of a donor recipient.
I am for organ donation, don't get me wrong. But I won't be here any longer if such an event were to happen. Thank God.
An amazing, heartwarming story of how love affects us…in this life and even after! How two strangers come together unexpectedly in this story of fate and how they strengthen each other through healing, living and loving…trying to maintain their independence, while understanding the connection they have for each other. Very well written! This one surprised me…I was not sure if I liked it initially…but a few pages in and I was hooked!
Mike and Susan, married for 40 years, die in a tragic car crash. That same day, Zach survives a horrific accident and becomes the recipient of a new heart. Somewhere in the same hospital, Chloe receives a heart transplant that she has been desperately waiting for. Neither Zach nor Chloe know that their hearts are linked, and that they must find one another in order to once again be whole.
The description of this novel was intriguing. It sounded like the type of story that would draw the reader in and allow them to feel the loss, heartache, and love right along with the characters. I was hoping that it would feel almost magical - the draw of two young people toward each other because their hearts belonged as a couple. While I did enjoy the story, I sadly did not love it the way I expected to. The depth of the characters was lacking, making it difficult to truly connect with them. I liked Susan, Mike, Zach, and Chloe and I was rooting for them all. However, it would have been nice if Zach and Chloe had more to their personalities.
I almost stopped reading this novel partway in. I was so disturbed by how Zach was injured, and the detail in which it was described, that I wasn't sure I wanted to keep reading. It felt as if part of a horror story had made its way into a love story by error. I believe that aspect of the book was part of what kept me from ever fully connecting to the characters.
I'm glad that I continued reading and completed this novel as it was a sweet story overall. The writing style was easy to read and the chapters were the perfect length to keep wanting to read "just one more". I also enjoyed the fact that the novel was told from the viewpoints of the four main characters and not just one person. I will most likely read another novel by this author as she has others out that also sound enjoyable.
Thank you to #NetGalley and #Bookoutre for an ARC of #TheCrash by #CatherineMiller in exchange for an honest review. The view expressed are entirely my own. 3 stars
First, I want to thank Catherine Miller, Bookouture and NetGalley for providing me with this book so I can bring you this review.
Beautiful! Catherine Miller’s The Crash is written straight from her heart to her readers! You are going to want to clear your schedule and grab a box of tissues. This is one book you will devour in one sitting!! This is the ultimate must read for 2022!! This will pull on all your heartstrings and more!
Catherine would like to dedicate this book in Memory of her Aunt Lain and Uncle John who are together forever.
This is a no brainer but everyone is going to be talking about Catherine Miller’s The Crash way after they finish the book! There are so many very important messages written between the lines!
Every once in a while you get that book and wonder how they came up with this incredible inspiration for the book. Catherine has her own special story to share with her readers!
I absolutely adored Zack and Chloe’s story! It was an incredible story unlike any other you have read before-trust me! You will smile, laugh, and tear up!
This is a book about miracles, the ones to be seen and unseen. I am a firm believer in miracles as I have witnessed two of them! I thank God for them each day!
Catherine gives you an up close and personal in-depth look at what patients go through with heart transplants. Not just the medical aspect but the personal responses to it. It was very eye opening and fascinating.
So many times I was at the edge of my seat dying to know the outcome to each situation that presented itself. Many times the tears just started flowing.
I would absolutely love to see this book made into a movie on The Hallmark Channel!
The Crash by Catherine Miller is the first book I have read from this author and I really enjoyed it. This was beautifully written from start to finish and I did need some tissues.
But, in a split-second everything can change around you.......
After forty years together, from being teenage sweethearts Mike and Susan were driving through the winding lanes in the forest when a song comes on the radio. This song bought so many great and lovely memories back to each other, when they were at high-school dancing on a dance floor forty years ago, they turn to each other. That split second – a stolen glance......as memories wash over them – is one of their last. Moments later, their car crashes. OMG!!!!!
With two strangers lie in hospital, their lives hanging in the balance. After a near-fatal accident, it’s a miracle that Zach survived. And with a life-long heart condition, Chloe didn’t think she would make it past her twenties. This was the day when Zach and Chloe's lives are saved when they each receive a new heart.
A freak accident that saves two young lives.
This is a beautifully written story and told by Mike, Susan, Zach and Chloe's points of view. I love the way it flips back and forth between present the day and the past. A great book if you love reading from authors Jodi Picoult and Diane Chamberlain etc.
I highly recommend this book But don't forget your tissues.
Big Thank you to Thanks to, Bookouture, and NetGalley for this ARC. in exchange for an honest review.
This is a story about four people, two hearts and a love story that will captivate the reader and take the reader to an emotional ride.
Susan and Mike had been childhood lovers. While listening to a song that had brought them together, they meet with an accident. Years later, Zack gets into an accident that causes him get a heart transplant and Chloe also get a heart transplant. After the heart transplant operation, Zack felt a connection to Chloe and soon starts the story.
The plot of the story attracted me first and when I started reading the story, I immediately got hooked into the story. The story is told from the perspectives of Zack, Chloe, Mike and Susan and I do like the backstory of Mike and Susan's love story, how Zack and Chloe's love blossomed through the heart connection they had. I was drawn into the blossoming love story of Zack and Chloe and it was actually a heartwarming and emotional story. From the first chapter to the end, the story took me to a journey. I do like the concept of how a transplant of the hearts brought two people close together.
Overall, for the ones who liked to read a good heartwarming story that will captivate the reader from the first chapter itself this book is the one for you--worth five stars in my opinion!
Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC. The review is based on my honest opinion only.
Mike and Susan are a couple in their 50s. The spark has gone out of their marriage but the love remains. Zack and Chloe are two strangers who both receive heart transplants but have strange sensations that they think are memories from their new hearts... The Crash is a real emotional rollercoaster! Zack has an horrific accident with a chainsaw while Chloe has lived with a congenital heart conditon since birth. Both are lucky enough to receive donor hearts which enable them to live full lives again. Yet they both feel a strangely emotional pull out of their comfort zone. Can organs retain memory? Can love transcend death? Fascinating questions dealt with in a really engaging way. Organ donation is such an important yet sensitive topic and I loved the use of it as a basis for a novel. I hope this encourages discussion about the incredible life changing effect it can have. The plot is delivered in a non linear, dual timeline way. We see the multiple perspectives of Mike, Susan, Zack and Chloe which gives us a wonderful emotional link to all four characters. I really felt that I knew the characters and wanted them to have a happy ending even though I knew what had happened to the older pair. The Crash is a wonderfully written book about the enduring power of love, and the plot about organ donation gripped my heart (pun intended)
I have read several books by this author before and I was looking forward to reading this one too. The idea of cellular memory is an intriguing one, indeed, and one that I don't think you can dismiss out of hand.
Chloe and Zack were both recipients of heart transplants. Susan and Mike were the donors. So, how come Chloe and Zack feel a connection with each other when there shouldn't really be one? Zack is determined to figure out why he needs to hang around at the hospital, for no particular reason. And Chloe feels better when she is near him. But, how confusing is this?? They will figure it out.....somehow or another.
I liked the story, but I didn't love it, and this surprised me somewhat, it has to be said. I didn't really like Zack all that much, despite him being one of the "good guys". I wasn't all that keen on Chloe's sisters either, despite them being caring people who cared a great deal about Chloe. I liked Chloe but I think it would have been nice to learn a little more about her art. I guess generally, I felt like I needed to get to know ALL the characters in a bit more depth. I just wasn't as emotionally invested as I thought I would be.
The Crash offers a compelling premise—a life-changing accident that intertwines the fates of its four main characters through organ donation. I was intrigued to see how this might work and indeed I felt the author dealt with the sensitive and emotive issues around organ donation very well. Unfortunately this book fell slightly short of expectations for me. The pacing felt uneven at times, some parts seemed especially drawn out with irrelevant detail and some plot developments seemed too predictable or overly reliant on coincidences. While the characters were relatable, a few felt underdeveloped, leaving me wanting more insight into their motivations. The “supernatural” elements of the story didn’t really work for me either sadly, but I really wanted them to. Overall, The Crash is a touching read with poignant themes, but it didn’t quite pack the emotional punch I was hoping for. It’s worth a read if you enjoy heartfelt stories, but it might not linger with you long after finishing.
