Tanči, jako by tě nikdo neviděl

Rate this book

I received this book from NetGalley and MacMillan Children’s Books. I have given Dance Like No One’s Watching by Vanessa Jones three out of five stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️

The above book description seems a little misleading to what I read from front to back of this book. It looks to focus on, our main character; Nettie’s boyfriend, Fletch – in regards to Fletch having a coma. I don’t want to spoil anything however, I feel like I need to say that this part only really happens towards the end of the book.

Despite the above paragraph which threw me off slightly, I really liked learning about the main and side characters in this book. I thought they were all well-developed and had their own voice which made it easy to differentiate between each character without getting confused on who was who. We follow our main character, Nettie, who I thought was a loveable person. I definitely had a lot of sympathy for Nettie throughout this story due to a lot of situations that happen.

One particular part I really enjoyed about this book were the musical theatre and movie references which were planted throughout this book. I thought they added a fun flare and also was very relevant to the characters career choices and subject at matter.

I found this book to be more character driven than having a strong plot, which I can appreciate as I find having strong characters helps you to connect and enjoy the story more. The plot was filled with lots and lots of drama! The style of writing was really easy to follow and had a great flow to it; this definitely helped to carry the book further.

I would recommend this book for readers who enjoy contemporary and drama-filled books.

I really liked Vanessa’s debut Sing Like No One’s Listening back in 2019, and I was so sad when this had its release date postponed due to the pandemic, so I was very pleased to finally be able to pick it up and see what happened next to Nettie and all her friends at the elite performing arts college Duke’s. In this installment, Nettie starts out feeling like she’s much more confident with her voice and she has her new relationship with Fletch and she’s got a really tight friendship group, but when the new year starts and a camera crew invades the College, things start to get pretty messy. And as if that wasn’t enough to deal with, she also has to continue investigating her mum’s secret past, that everyone is trying to hide from her. I’m pretty sure I said this when I reviewed Sing, but I really love Nettie. I think she’s incredibly strong and I love the way she treats her friends, and it was nice seeing her a bit more sure of herself this time round. I have to admit Fletch got on my nerves a bit with the way he treated Nettie throughout this, but I had forgiven him by the end, and I really loved getting to know Luca, Alec, Kiki and Leon better, as they all have really great subplots explored during the book. The cutthroat world of showbiz can be a bit difficult to read about at times, but there’s no doubt it’s a fascinating setting for a book, and I loved the extra element of tension and ccompetition the documentary added. I got the sense from the ending of this that there probably isn’t going to be another book in the series, but I really like the way it left things, and I’ll be keeping an eye out for whatever Vanessa writes next.

I read this as part of the #Mixtapeathon readathon. I used this book for the prompt ‘summer throwback’ as when I was a kid I used to spend my summers doing musical theatre!
I read the first book in this series a month or so ago and I really enjoyed it, so was looking forward to this one. This book is definitely a lot more ‘harsh’ and ‘serious’ than the first one. It didn’t feel as light hearted and fun. Nettie and her friends had a lot more to contend with this time around.
I really enjoyed this book - even if I missed Fletch (he’s not in this book as much as the first) I liked how we got more into the secrets and story of Nettie’s mum. This book uses the idea of ‘reality tv’ as it’s main focussed, and it shows how contrived and manipulative they are - something that young people should be more aware of!
Overall, this book was still as fun and enjoyable as the first book in the series. I would love to read more from Vanessa Jones in the Duke’s Academy series!!

A perfect sequel. Lovely to be reunited with characters we came to love in the first book and see their journey progress even further. Works great as a stand-alone novel too,

LOVED IT! Was such a shame I didn’t realise this was the second book in a series however it was easy to catch up, full on lots of interesting sun plots and compelling characters who even though had their flaws they were lovable. Had serious undertones of the harsh reality of drama school which I feel was an important message. Very good read!
