“She screams and whips her head back, spraying sweat from her hair on the back wall, as I gently pull the child’s body to the side and the head comes free. The mother lets out a heavy sigh and cries great body shaking sobs. No time for celebrating yet.” I’ve put together a book filled with true stories of my 30 years’ experience working as a paramedic, firefighter, rescue diver, and flight medic. Many of them are tragic with some dark humor mixed in. If you're looking for cute kitten stories, this is not the book for you. However, if you want a glimpse into the real world of what it’s like to be a firefighter/paramedic, look no further.
This was a GREAT medical story book. The author did a great job at telling his interesting patient cases while including a few interesting bits about his own life. Normally, when people include their personal stories / info, it just is a tad more boring to be fair. But John Wyatt did an amazing job.
I really liked that he kept the patient stories on the shorter side, it definitely made it easier to stay engaged. this book is on the shorter side at around 100-ish pages, but man it packed a great punch. I hope the author writes more!
Author John Wyatt describes in detail the calls he responded to in over 30 years of EMS work. The locales and positions change throughout the book but the constant is the dedication to duty and helping others. I thoroughly enjoyed the author’s recounting of his medical saves and those beyond saving. If you like true stories of people experiencing medical difficulties and trauma and how it was handled, you have a lot of good and interesting calls to read about here. Recommended.
i completely loved this book.. devoured it today.. the author does a great job of telling work place accounts, keeping them interesting and keeping it respectful of the patients/victims..
his accounts [doesn't feel right calling them "stories"] are so candid.. i love fly on the wall kind of stuff.. he can take some colorful situations and tell them with candor & grit and still create an emotional human element..
i must say a huge Thank You to him & all those in the emergency responders field..
We are blessed to learn of, and to appreciate, what firefighters , EMTs, & Paramedics do for all of us by reading this book. They are incredibly brave, resourceful, and giving individuals...gifts from God for the rest of us. Its lucky for us that this one individual, this author, has been all 3, and was able to recount his experiences so skillfully with us. I’ll carry this information and my respect, admiration, and gratitude for first all responders with me always.
Thank you, Mr. Wyatt for telling like it really is. I trained as a Basic EMT for a rural county. Unfortunately I was never able to complete my ride along training because my husband was the only Doctor for our little hospital. We had three children at home and no one to care for them if we were both working an accident. Our First Responders thru Paramedics never receive the praise and thank you they deserve for all they do!
Love these type of books - quickly read and never boring as they change direction every minute or two. This one is good, kept my interest and was descriptive enough to get the scene described in your head but of course not enough to really grasp what these heroic first responders deal with. This author worked in many different capacities from Life Flight Medic to full on Fireman - what a great career
I love reading stories about doctors, nurses, and others who do this kind of work, and about all kinds of emergencies and rescues. I've always loved shows about Doctors or in hospital settings since Marcus Welby and Dr. Kildare and all the others since. There's just something about them? I also Love true NDE stories.
A great book told in total respect to the people the author worker within his many years as a first responder. You could tell that every story that he shared held a personal place in his heart and I'm very grateful that he shared just a few with us to read. Thank you.
Please read this book! As a former EMT I felt moved by. The incredible stories of his long career! The title needs changed to something different I almost didn’t read this book thinking it was a not so serious look at being a EMT.
As a retired nurse who worked in the OR and liked the excitement of that job, these stories were very interesting to read. It was interesting to see his perspective.
While I don't know the author, he and I have many work similarities and I have a deep feeling that we know some of the same people. A couple of the stories were very familiar, as I had heard them before from people I know.
