3.5 stars. I enjoyed the 2nd Century Roman Britain setting of this novel. It's not a common setting for a HR. It took place mostly in Caledonia (Scotland) with the later part of the book moving south to Hadrian's Wall in northern England. It's a long way back in time, but the writer made it interesting and credible. Although the main focus of the book is a romance, the historical aspects felt convincing.

Justin (Justinian) was a Roman general whose command was one of the furthest outposts of the Roman Empire, in wild Caledonia. Fenella was one of the local people, the Picts, as the Romans referred to them, meaning the Painted People (due to the blue woad they wore on their bodies at times). Fenella reluctantly ended up as a slave in Justin's household. Their relationship took a while to warm up. Fenella did not trust the Romans, and her plans were only to escape. But over time their mutual attraction tuned into more, and the enemies became lovers.

No doubt many readers of Scottish or northern English origins have distant ancestors such as these, from when the Roman invaders intermingled with the local people. There was a shortage of women in the Roman forts, and doubtless relationships with local women were plentiful. The storyline felt believable. Even the sternest military leaders have a private life too, and this was the focus, especially in the later part of the book. Overall, an enjoyable read, and I would be happy to read more HRs set in Roman Britain.

The word "belly" was used 64 times in this 286 page book. It's apparently the only way to describe any type of emotion or feelings from a heroine with a temperament of a feral cat and sensitivity of a rock. Her belly churned, her belly jumped, her belly flipped, a spark ignited in her belly.... etc. On and on. Her gut is the only part of her that shows emotion. This story may work for some given the setting of Ancient Rome but shrewish heroines will never be likable or appealing to me no matter the context. If you like miserable, grumpy, snarling, hissing, teeth-clenching, spitting, foul-mouthed heroines who hit first and ask questions later then this may work better for you. This girl didn't even like her baby siblings and I'm supposed to root for her? :/ The secondary couple Marcus and Kahina were more interesting and convincing for me as a love story. I thought the hero Justin was likable and so sweet and deserved better than Finella.

This book is another excellent example of Jayne Castel’s ability to create phenomenal historical romance throughout the ages. This story is set in Ancient (118 A.D.) England and Scotland when the Roman’s were laying siege to Caledonia & Britannia and during the building of Hadrians Wall across the island. This was a time of “Conquer or Capture” when few had the rights to make decisions in their own life, and women were bartered, traded, sold, stolen, and enslaved— their only purpose was to cater to the men in their lives and to breed the next generation.

A love story between a picti woman, Fenella & Justinian Valerius Aquila, General of the Twentieth Roman Legion — Valeria Victrix — a true enemies to lovers trope! 😍 From their first encounter Justin finds himself unmistakably attracted to the enticing huntress and when he finds himself becoming the owner of Fenella he can’t help but to feel like he is instead under her thrall. Fenella has always had a man controlling her life and deciding her fate — father, brother, lover, husband … she would rather die than add “owner” to that list, yet she finds herself slave to General Aquila. So begins the love-hate-lust relationship between Justin & Fenella. 🦅

This story will keep you captivated from cover to cover - I didn’t want it to end! I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.

Taming the Eagle
A Pict-Roman Ancient Historical Romance

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

All Fenella has ever wanted is to chose her own path in life, yet it seems that men have always determined her fate. The day the Roman soldiers fought their way into her husbands crannog and demanded retribution for a bloody attack, she realizes that even though she's married and living with her husband , it means nothing.

To save himself, her chieftain husband offers the Roman general her life for his.

Justinian Aquila govern's the empires wild Northern frontier. He's dedicated his life to serving Rome, but when he takes a spunky Pict woman as his slave, his world will never be the same again.

Fenella was made for him, and he's more then determined to win her heart.

Trapped in the Roman fort of Ardoch, Fenella quietly goes about planning her escape. She knows she will have freedom, whatever the cost. And as the shadow of war falls over Caledonia once again, she has to fight her ever growing feelings for Justin.

In a world or shelfish, cruel men, has she found the last and only good one?

Jayne Castel is absolutely incredible. She weaves a tale that is so thoroughly engrossing I forgot every thing and everyone around me. It was just the book and I. The characters could not have been more perfrct for eachother. I fully enjoyed this book and I can't wait to see what Ms. Castel has up her sleeve for us next.

What a wonderful love story. Justin and Fenella come alive in the pages of this novel. Ms Castel weaves Justin and Fenella rocky romance around the adage, “If you love someone, set them free. If they come back they’re yours; if they don’t they never were.” I was captivated.

An entertaining historical romance

This is an entertaining historical romance with strong characters and a compelling plot. There is some violence that may be disturbing for some readers but still recommended for fans of the genre.

2 stars, but barely. While a decent story, it’s important to note that the big theme of the book is the enslavement of others. This is, for better or worse, spelled out on the cover (spoiler: it’s for worse). Because of the nature of this, it could also be considered dub-con due to the simple fact that Justin owns Fenella. Does he ask for consent? Yes, but again. The fact that she is enslaved to him still dictates the power imbalance. Can she truly consent if she is not free?

Another issue is the repetitive way of describing things. Emotions came from and resided in the stomach in fact, the word belly came up 61 times and stomach 3.

Finally…the 9th Legion. Like many myths surrounding it, this book posits that the legion disappeared in Scotland. However, historians dispute this and point to evidence of the legion being sent to either modern day Netherlands, Armenia, or even Palestine. It’s one of those great historical mysteries.

Decent enough read, but the story does feel very amateurish.

The men in Fenella’s life all mistreat and used her for their own selfish reason as chattel and pawns. From a lover who betrayed her with his lies and deceit, her own Pict father who who sold her like livestock as a wife to a brutal man who is her fathers age without her consent. Furthermore this man was their Pict chieftain who was an abusive husband, who might have killed the two wives before Fenella and sold her as a Pict slave to their Roman enemies for his own selfish freedom. As her brutal husband saw an opportunity by the way the Roman, General Justinian (Justin) Aquila looked at Fenella with infatuation and and lust in his eyes!

Now her husband Toutorix, (The Eagle) took advantage of this situation! He who was the chieftain of their Pict tribe and traded her off like she was a piece of garbage or an animal, not a chieftain’s wife who should be honored and cherished! A man she was forced to marry and now she’s forced to be this handsome General’s slave! Fenella is acting all brave and nonchalant, but deep inside she was absolutely terrified!

Now Fenella was a slave to their Roman enemy who was obsessed with her, only meeting her briefly before. On top of that, Justin just betrayed his people by not killing Fenella’s husband who did so much damage, murder and destruction to Justinian Aquila’s own people. All because of his infatuation with his wife, Fenella, a woman who wanted to escape this cage. Justin is a Roman General and has never been swayed by a woman before, this spit fire Pict woman he is definitely determined to conquer and tame!

However as time goes by, Fenella is planning her escape, except s starts to develop feelings for her people’s enemy. Has she actually found an honest and honorable man in this Roman General, especially after all her bad experiences with the men of her past? Furthermore, she is still a slave and even in Roman law they cannot marry a slave. So she would never be more than a concubine, a position Fenella would never ever accept!

For Justin she is like what a dragonfly is to a flame. What will Fenella do? Can Justin prove to Fenella she is his forever true love and the woman of his heart? Are these two star crossed lovers able to overcome all the obstacles that are thrown into their path? Will they ever be able to reach an agreement and open up each others hearts? Can two enemies whose people are at war find a true happily ever after?

Author, Jayne Castel pens another beautiful stand alone novel! A book that will keep readers up late into the night reading this magnificent tale. It has all the elements historical romance readers love! It has bits of true history, enemies and hatred that might possibly turn into a forbidden love and an amazing passion that sizzles! A book I read on one session that I could not put down! A novel not to be missed which I highly recommend! Can’t wait to see what this author will release next! As I never miss any of her phenomenal books which I always find extraordinary!

Set in the hearts of ancient Scotland, Taming the Eagle by Jayne Castel tells the story of young Fenella, a strong and feisty huntress who felt she was being controlled by the men in her life. As a young girl, Fenella’s dreams of love and romance were shattered, first by her lover and then her father who gave her out in marriage to Toutorix, their highland lord. After enduring years of abuse at the hands of Toutorix and eventually losing two pregnancies, Fenella falls in the hands of the most feared Roman general in the Highlands, General Justin Aquilla who takes her into his household as a household slave. Despite her resolve not to be controlled again by any man in her life, Fenella finds herself doing just that in General Aquilla’s household although she would do anything to challenge General Aquilla’s authority. Her wild nature was foreign to the Roman Soldiers and made her an object of interest at the Roman Fort; this also caused a simmering attraction between her and the General. But in the face of so many trials and hurdles will their love story hold? Taming the Eagle, tells the story of love, hate, betrayal and war.
First off, I love this book. What’s not to love? Taming the Eagle gave me a glimpse of the history between ancient Rome and Scotland. The writer took pieces of history and wove them together perfectly with fictional characters to write the best Romance book I’ve ever read. The descriptions of the building of the great wall, the disappearance of the ninth, the parts that highlighted what ancient Romans did with their war prisoners, the gladiators, Emperor Hadrian, the crannogs and the fort at Ardoch. The myth of the black raven, it was easy to picture all these with the apt descriptions and clear language demonstrated by the author whiles falling in love.
I love Fenella’s character as well; Strong, feisty, wasn’t afraid of taking risks, ready to fight even in the face of failure. To me, Fenella was a symbol of a brave Scottish goddess. I was also pulled into the battle scenes. The author got me hooked right from the beginning until the very end.
I loved everything about the book and couldn’t find a single flaw. This a book that will be enjoyed thoroughly and I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
I would rate this book five out of five stars.
I would recommend this book for lovers of history with a little romance on the side, adults, young and old, romance lovers and lovers of strong female protagonists. It is however not suitable for children as it contains some X-rated scenes.

I'VE ALWAYS BEEN A FAN OF ROMAN BASED HISTORICAL ROMANCES, AND I KID YOU NOT HOW RARE IT IS! THIS WAS ENJOYABLE, IF NOT AN UNDENIABLE TREASURE. Naturally, I would have enjoyed this a lot more if the angst was amplified and such, but nevertheless, this was a good story.

FENELLA is a Pict woman who is wild, strong and courageous. Unfortunately, her family's a piece of sh*t and I suppose it's historically accurate to the practiced culture during that era. Her father's trading her to be married off to the chieftain whom she loathes, and all her life she's been controlled by men - her lover who abandoned and broke her heart, her father who was supposed to protect her and lastly her husband who betrayed her. None of them ever made her feel loved, safe or protected. In other words, Fen's only got herself to rely on. No men should be trusted. So when she is traded to the Roman General - a man she met years ago, who let her lived - it seems their connection was never meant to end at just their first meeting. Throughout the story, Fen's like a prickly porcupine who doesn't allow herself to get close to Justin. Who could blame her? Put yourself in her shoes, and imagine becoming a slave....that would chafe on anyone's pride and freedom. Personally, while I like that she fought and wasn't a pushover, that aspect of her character kind of shadowed her relationship with Justin...that it didn't feel as deep as it ought to. The attraction while there, just exploded and I would have appreciated a simmering slow burn. That would have hit the spot perfectly.

JUSTIN is a Roman general dedicated to serving his country, and now hopes that he'll be able to have a good retirement after. Unfortunately, he's got a thorn in his side named The Wolf, a Pict leader whom he burns to destroy. The feeling being mutual, when Justin finally cornered the Wolf, he was surprised (yet not) by the man's cowardice to offer up his own wife. For the first time, lust blinded common sense and Justin accepted. Naturally, this wouldn't make him look good in front of his men. Justin's unlike anyone Fenella's encountered. Motivated with purely selfish reasons to win Fenella's heart and soul, Justin treats her well, but at the same time, Fenella's existence teaches him to finally see the wrongness of slavery and helped him to change as well.

OVERALL this was an enjoyable roman romance. The characters do undergo a change and development and while I wished it was more angsty and lusty (HAHA), this hits the spot and seriously, if ANYONE knows a good ROMAN based romance, please recommend it to me!

Jayne Castel has delivered another well written, can’t put down story that is rich in details. She is the only author whom I read the notes at the end of the book including the “Historical Notes”. They just add another dimension and insight to the historical part of the story.

Fenella is a strong female character who continually fights for what she wants. She is first disappointed in her boyfriend, Lorcan and then her father who basically sells her to the chieftain, Tuotorix who is a brute.

After the chieftain attacks a Roman outpost, the general, Justinian Aquila retaliates. With no chance of winning the battle, Tuotorix offers the general his wife, Fenella. She becomes the general’s slave. This starts the interesting relationship between Justinian and Fenella.

As a strong, independent woman who resents being a slave she is constantly watching and planning. But, she is also a compassionate person and this is what she must fight to help her determine her future.

If you like ancient world historical romance, you will love this book. I can not wait for another novel from this author.

Jayne Castel’s “Taming the Eagle” A Pict-Roman Ancient Historical Romance

Justinian Aquila governs the Roman empire’s wild northern frontier. Now he demands retribution for a bloody attack by Fenella’s chieftain husband. To pay his retribution Fenella becomes slave to the the Roman governor OR could it be the other way around. A woman, whose greatest desire is to rule her own destiny and yet she is constantly under the control of men, abusive men.

This book has a Wow factor to it, it’s just that extraordinary!

Superbly written, this beautiful love story unfolds as we see Fenella and Justin fall in love. He’s a noble and good man bound determined to win the heart of this sassy spitfire whose brave front is betrayed by her heart. But the road to happiness is long and winding with many obstacles in their way.

With magnificent characters, sizzling passion, a captivating and intriguing plot, lot’s of action, and fraught with drama, emotions romance, love and danger the author weaves a fine story.

I enjoy this story so immensely! I love how the author incorporates actual history into her storylines so skillfully. She handled the emotional aspects of the story perfectly. She is so talented and always delivers a story that can have you gritting your teeth one minute and breathless the next ❤️.

Thank you so much Ms. Castel for this engaging, heartfelt love story. Justin is my hero.

This ebook caught my attention from first page, time period is 118 .A.D. Fenella is on her way to meet her lover and comes across a Roman Patrol, the leader is General Justinian Valerius Aquila,. He is captivated by her he let's her go,this area is ruled by the Roman Empire, she meets her lover (Lorcon) and he gives her news she doesn't like. When she returned home her father tells her she has to marry their Chieftain Toutorix, called the Wolf, he is a very cruel man, he beat his first and second wife to death! Fenella is a woman who stands up for herself, this marriage is doomed from the start, three years later the Roman Army raid Toutorix village because Toutorix men had killed and destroyed a Roman fort. To save his own life Toutorix gives Fenella to Justin, he makes her his slave. By now Fenella has no faith in men, I don't want to destroy the story for you, I absolutely loved this book, Fenella life was very hard at times, the history in this book was excellent by the author, about the Roman and the Pics people. I enjoyed reading how the romance between Fenella and Julian came about. I was given this book as a ARC to review and I can say I would recommend this book as a historical, romance, and action story. Secondly people in story added to the plot.Gave the book 5 stars, A page turner ,couldn't put it down, I never could figure out what was going to happen next.

It took me some time to get into this book because it was set in a completely different time and the addition of the Romans was unfamiliar. Once I got into it, I simply couldn't put it down. Such an amazing story!

I felt for Fenella who all the men in her life betrayed...well, not all the men, maybe? Her way to happiness was long and hard and it showed me a time and a society that was new to me, brutal and harsh, and in the middle of all this blossomed this love. And not only this love...

The sheer helplessness of Fen, a strong and courageous woman capable of fighting and defending herself but incapable of making decisions about her own life because of her role as a woman at the time and the society she was living in, was a harsh reminder of the things we take for granted in our time and our society.

I also loved Justin and his honor and loyalty who was such a nice surprise after the way the other men in Fen's life acted towards her. I also love how those two fought till the (almost) very end but they simply couldn't stop falling in love no matter what happened around them. Sometimes I was so upset or worried, and sometimes furious, but this book kept me glued to my reader till the very last page.

This book is captivating from the first page to the last. You won't get bored. The characters are very interesting and so well defined you can feel their emotions. The detail in the book given about the scenery, the life of the times, the hatred depicted, the heated arguments between characters and the battles between the Romans and Pictis is so clear and real, you feel like you are standing right there.

Initally, there is no love lost between Roman General Justin and Fenella, Daughter of the Wolf. In fact, they are enemies until The General takes Fenella as a slave for the life of her husband. Now, the heated arguments and battles starts between Justin and Fenella. You will have to read the book to find out how two enemies end up loving each. Its a great love story!

There is so much going on in this book and some twist and turn not expected to keep your interest.

I received a free copy of this book for a honest review. I would recommend this book to anybody who enjoys historical romance, ancient world romance or historical fiction books.

The Eagle, The Pict, The Slave:
There are so few romance stories written about the Picts and Romans that I was thrilled when I saw this book and I was engrossed right from the introduction.
This deeply emotional story is brilliantly written to the point that I could not stop reading.
My words will not do justice to convey just how good this love story is.
Justin the Roman general is such a stalwart intelligent man who is attracted to Fenella.
Fenella is determined to find freedom after the men in her life have treated her as a pawn.
The challenges Fenella faces are extraordinary, and we follow her on her journey of discovering kindness, trust, and finding love.
A large cast of characters with many heartfelt situations that was a treat to read.
Terrific epilogue that completed the story to my great satisfaction.
This is a heart pounding enemy to lovers' emotionally driven story that I highly recommend.
Adult Advisory:
I did receive an advanced copy for my honest opinion.

Wow! This is an amazing story! This author’s books seem to have a density to them. They are filled with detailed descriptions, complex emotions and a variety characters who range from innocent and meek to exceedingly arrogant and brutal. Her battles are vicious, bloody, and destructive. In this story Fenella’s lover betrays her, her father marries her off to the chieftan who beats her, and her husband offers her to the enemy to save himself. Justin, General Aquila, takes Fenella as his slave, and even though she spews venom at him and tries to escape, he is mesmerized by her. This story will have your heart breaking and your stomach churning, but you will be glued to the book and won’t be able to put it down. This is an exciting and powerful tale told by a master storyteller that should not be missed.

She was his slave, but owned his heart

Men are beasts who abuse and betray. That's why, if she is ever able to be free, Fenella will never ever trust another man.

Upon seeing her, she's haunted Justinian Aquila. Not good. He is a general who must pay attention to his responsibilities.

I love Jayne Castel's well researched historical romances, and Taming the Eagle did not disappoint. Set in Medieval Scotland, this intense and engrossing stand alone novel had me wondering how the H/h would ever achieve a happily ever after. Not to worry, because they did and oh what a sweet ending.

Content 411: In addition to a couple of sex scenes, this book also contains some swearing and coarse language.

Oh my snap!

Our hero is one of the most swoon worthy heros I've ever read. He's hot, generous, heroic, sexy, passionate, just wow!

Our heroine is strong, loyal, determined, and just a truly kick butt young woman.

The first meeting between the two just happens to be when he saves her when she travels a little too close to his fort.

The second meeting is when her husband offers her to him to save himself. This is the start of a love story that overcomes battles, hatred, demotions, attacks, and becomes a love that last a lifetime.

This was a beautifully written story with passion and an enemy to lovers troupe that is a true enemy to lovers story. I love Jayne Castel and Taming the Eagle is one of her best, I cannot recommend it enough.

Such a sweet, unsuspecting romance…. I say unsuspecting because the story had a few surprise angles that I didn’t expect. I actually appreciated the other prominent characters and enjoyed seeing their story woven into the book. But Fenella and Justin steal the show in this historical romance. Before reading this book, the author encouraged her readers to watch a short video on the actual Ardoch Fort. I loved picturing the fort in my mind, of what really may have happened there, what it would have been like for these characters surviving in Scotland, with Romans in their territory.
What I loved most about this book is the change in both Fenella and Justin, the changes made for their love to grow. To look at each other in new ways, to see the good, to trust, to be selfless… that is LOVE!.

It was quite impressive how much research the author put into this book. However, that being said, I found the characterizations rather one-dimensional and forgettable. There was no build-up of any kind or any character development for that matter. Things just sort of happened out of the blue! Justin made for a fine and honourable MMC, but Fenella, on the other hand, was unlikable. She was rude and bitter to everyone—including her own family. And besides her beauty, I didn't understand what Justin saw in her. In the end, it read as if Fenella settled for Justin because she had nowhere else to go, while Justin was rather obsessed with the idea of having Fenella as his wife. It didn't feel like love to me.

An enjoyable read if you're into Ancient Rome and Scotland, but this one simply didn't register high on the romance scale for me. 3.75 stars.

This was a nice standalone novel and our leads had wonderful growth that they needed in order to realize their love for each other and what it meant to have freedom.

Justin and Fenella were a great couple and very well-written characters that I enjoyed reading about how smitten Justin was with Fenella and how she realized her true feelings. It was heartbreaking at certain points of the story but I'm glad they got their happy ending!

This also reminded me very much of Jayne's other work, the second book in her Pict Brothers series - where the main heroine is a Roman taken captive under one of the brothers. If you haven't checked out that one yet, put it on your list!.

This was great, I was a very confused actually alot confused. The era Iimagined is like that of Gladiator the movie. But the Latin terms for the different rooms and a read was alot. But pretty grasping eventually.
The story was great. The heroine was so strong and brave and yes very reckless. The hero was really well written. Strong but gentle and caring. Was a great book.
I used to be a huge fan of Highland romance and have since started reading alot of contemporary romances. I find the descriptions in these olden age romances so wonderfully vivid. It almost makes one feel like they are part of the book.

Absolutely great read

I admit I love almost everything I've read by Jayne Castel and this story is absolutely no exception. Justin, commander of the Roman forces and Fenella, the unhappy wife of a Pict clan leader, are thrown together by her husband so he can escape the Romans. As he learns more about her and they spend more time together, things change. These characters are well written, compelling, great chemistry, and steam. Action, drama, betrayal , and more. As with most of Jayne Castel's books, this one can be read for free with Kindle Unlimited. Great read.

A fantastic story of Fenella, a Pict woman who's been ruled and abused by her father, lover, and husband, and the Roman general Justin, who takes her as a slave. Because of her past experience with men, Fenella expects Justin to act with the same disregard for her feelings and possibly with cruelty as well, but she slowly comes to realize that although she is his slave, he treats her with more respect and care than any man has ever done before. Still, it's hard for her to trust him, and when freedom becomes a possibility for her, she grabs it. Only later does she realize that freedom without love has little meaning.

The character development is well-done. The plot kept my interest throughout, and the ending is very satisfying.
