The Saturday Night Sauvignon Sisterhood

Rate this book
It’s time for a w(h)ine

‘Oh, for f*ck’s sake’ muttered Claire under her breath, as she opened the fridge to see what she could find for a no effort dinner. The children continued to fight behind her. They regarded any form of fish not encased in breadcrumbs as toxic, and were resistant enough to the delicious homemade fishfingers Claire had made for them, insisting they much preferred Captain Birdseye’s version. White wine was starting to look like quite an appealing dinner actually. Maybe just a small glass.
‘Are you having wine, Mum? You know you’re not supposed to have wine every night. We did about alcohol units at school. That’s quite a big glass of wine, how many units do you think are in it?’
’Bet the bastards didn’t tell you that wine is remarkably good at cancelling out whining though, did they?’ muttered Claire.
Claire’s family has gone nuclear. Her precious moppets keep calling Childline when she feeds them broccoli, she’s utterly Ottolenghied out at weekends, and her darling husband is having an affair with her best friend.
The question isn’t whether she needs a glass of wine, but is there one big enough?
Enter the Sauvignon Sisterhood, a new set of friends brought together by a shared love of liquid therapy. Together they might just be able to convince Claire that, like a good bottle of red, life really can get better with age. Or at least there’s more to it than the joy of an M&S non-iron school uniform.

Begone, evil book.

I picked this up for $2 (USD) at one of those pop-up book stores in a local shopping mall. I'd hoped it was worth all that money. It wasn't. 40 pages in, and I couldn't stand reading one more page.

Books about women who get married and have children, then spend the rest of their lives moaning about being married and having children, don't do anything for me. Neither do husbands who get married and then have affairs and bugger off because they can't stand their wives and children.

This isn't humour, it's torture.

I felt as if this novel is trying too hard, is that even a thing? Also, I noticed the sentences where extended by a lot and I found it to be quite annoying. I really appreciate better grammar over an average plot. This novel just wasn’t for me personally

I absolutely Loved the Why Mummy series of books from Gill Sims, so as soon as I saw this one I couldn't wait to read it.
Once again, a funny, literal laugh out loud book that I just flew through. The book dealt with so many emotions including betrayal, death, grief but the humour always stood out above everything else.
I read a few snippets out to my husband because it was totally something I would say and/or think, and he totally agreed.
Would definitely recommend this for someone who needs a nice easy going read, that will make you laugh.
Great read ❤️

Absolutely loved this book, I thought I was going to struggle to finish it as there are a lot of triggers in it for me and my past.
But I laughed out loud the whole way through.

This book reads like a poor relation of the "Why Mummy..." series by the same author. It has very similar characters but hardly any of the humour and warmth of that series. Sorry but I was disappointed by this one

I really enjoy Gill Sims' sense of humor; it's funny and also quite spot-on. This book is a great read - you'll laugh out loud, but some more serious moments might even make you shed a tear. Overall, it's still hilarious - what could be worse than discovering your husband is cheating with your best friend? This is my second book by Gill Sims and I plan on reading all of her books, as I find them to be incredibly enjoyable.

Good. Very funny in places but very heartwarming as well. Even though this book seems to be a funny take on motherhood and marriage it also deals with serious issues with was dealt with properly and with care.

I’d like to thank NetGalley and Harper Collins UK for approving me for an ARC of this book.

I am a huge fan of the Why Mummy series, written by Gill Sims and to say I was gutted about the series finishing last year would be an understatement. I was devastated! Gill Sims has become my parenting bible and knowing their would be no more instalments was unthinkable. When I saw this book pop up on NetGalley I did a happy dance and requested straightaway. I then saw the audio as available on Scribd so downloaded it immediately.

I am pleased to say that Gill Sims did not disappoint! The tears of laughter were falling by then end of the first chapter and there were many more moments after. The way Gill Sims captures not just the parenting moments but life as a female and the tangled friendships is pure perfection. The delivery was sublime and by the end I felt like one of the Saturday night Sauvignon sisterhood.

When Claire’s life is turned upside down by her husband’s affair with her best friend she feels like she has to start all over again. The two most important people in her life (besides her children) have now vanished and she feels she has no one. Through sheer coincidence she meets Lucy, Kate and Mary. These three women are fantastic! Whether it’s Lucy with her candid nature and ability to make a joke out of any scenario, Mary the tired young mum wanting to escape the endless drama and tantrums or Kate the mother hen of the group coping with her own loss they each brought heart and soul to the story.

Through a series of days out and trying new things these women provide us with much hilarity but there were also moments of emotion where you saw the bond that they had all formed. It was also refreshing to see many different forms of motherhood, relationship status and stages of life. This wasn’t a book about divorced women coming together to hate all men, this was female solidarity at its best and showed what it meant to be a part of a true sisterhood.

All I can say is I hope Gill Sims carries on writing as her ability to make me laugh and cry from one sentence to the next is the best feeling in the world. This book deserves all the stars and will definitely be up their in my top reads of the year!

The story begins with Claire, going about her everyday life with her husband who doesn’t appreciate her, and her two children who spend most of their time fighting. Very early into the story however, Claire discovers that her husband is having an affair. He’s having an affair with Claire’s best friend, who has been by her side since they were children. From here, we follow Claire’s story as her family life implodes. When she meets Lucy, Kate, and Mary, their traumas and shared experiences bring them all together, and they form the most wonderful friendship.

Claire, Lucy, Kate, and Mary are all such enjoyable characters. I’d truly love to be friends with them! Not only are they a lot of fun, and a good laugh, but they also have each other’s backs no matter what. They bring out the best in each other. They push each other to do things that they wouldn’t usually do on their own. I think everyone should have a friendship group like theirs in their lives.

We did also get a small cameo from Louise, a character from the author’s Why Mummy series. This part of the book was actually one of the funniest parts for me. She certainly brought her controversial attitude, eccentricity, and bizarre behaviour with her in the crossover!

Amongst the craziness and humour , there’s some really deep aspects to this book. At one point it took a turn I hadn’t seen coming, it was a sucker punch which reduced me to a blubbering wreck. The story touches on grief, guilt, conflicting feelings, and overcoming events that have flipped your life completely upside down. There is also a tone of female empowerment, strength, and solidarity that flows throughout.

This story actually made me think a lot about myself, and how important it is to remember who I am. It’s very easy as a parent to get stuck in a routine, and to lose yourself in the process. But I’m not just a mum and a wife, I’m ME, and that’s something that I really need to start making an effort to remember.

Once again, Gill Sims has written a fantastic, real, and hilarious story, that you can lose yourself in. She knows how to perfectly balance the comedy with the more serious topics, and the conversations that we all seem to shy away from. I highly recommend this book (and her Why Mummy series) to everyone!

‘It’s time for a w(h)ine’ - cover tag line.

My thanks to HarperCollins U.K. for an eARC via NetGalley of ‘The Saturday Night Sauvignon Sisterhood’ by Gill Sims in exchange for an honest review. I combined reading with its unabridged audiobook edition.

Having adored Sims’ hilarious ‘Why Mummy’ series, I was excited for her latest novel.

We are introduced to Claire who like ‘Mummy’ is juggling a busy life that includes raising two precious moppets. Currently they are threatening at every turn to call Childline due to Claire serving them vegetables, homemade fish fingers and ‘inferior’ snacks. Her husband, Andrew, is unable to help with the children due to being Very Busy and Important.

Then Claire’s life goes into meltdown when she accidentally discovers that Andrew is having an affair with her best friend, Emily. They separate and she realises that she needs to find a new circle of friends given most of the couples she used to socialise with are uncomfortable with her single status.

After attending a disastrous book club meeting she bonds with other fleeing attendees over a bottle (or more) of wine. It’s not long before they dub themselves the Sauvignon Sisterhood and seek to challenge themselves to expand their horizons.

As expected the story is full of laugh out loud moments though there is also a degree of drama given that Claire has to not only confront a double betrayal but also establish a new life for herself and her children.

There were plenty of laughs and satirical digs at modern life, along with heart warming moments and yes, a few of the heartbreaking kind as well.

Overall, I totally loved it this effervescent celebration of friendship between women. The language is a bit earthy though that’s very much Sims’ style.

Highly recommended.

Thank you, NetGalley and Harper Collins, for a gifted copy of this book for an honest and voluntary review. All opinions are my own.

I am a massive fan of Gill Sims, so I was over the moon when I was allowed to review 'The Saturday Night Sauvignon Sisterhood'. Admittingly, despite my enthusiasm, I was a little worried that this new book and many characters wouldn't be as entertaining as the 'Why Mummy' series...but oh my, was I wrong!

This story sees Claire deal with the hardest betrayal by discovering her best friend and husband's affair, leaving her entire world shaken. However, these events lead to the creation of the sisterhood. A group of unlikely friends who offer her companionship, laughter and a kick in the right direction. Many laugh-out-loud moments and some intensely emotional scenes were entirely unexpected, especially nearer the end.

The most entertaining part of this read is when each lady has to choose an activity they've always wanted to do but hasn't yet. Some of them have some very 'different' suggestions, all of which 'The Sisterhood' embraces and provides some fantastic comical, heard to forget moments.

The characters within this book are primarily relatable, and there is someone for everyone. (They did remember me of a few in my social circle - but they will remain anonymous to protect the guilty!)

If you are looking for a good night in with a glass or two of your favourite beverage and a book that will have you crying with laughter, you definitely need this book in your life! This would make a fantastic book club read or share amongst your friends, even if it is to try and say the title at the end of the night!

I can not recommend this enough, and congratulations to Gill Sims on another fantastic read!

God I love Gill Sims. As a single mother of four children, she could be writing my life and that’s what makes her books so enjoyable for me. I’m not alone!!! “The Saturday Night Sauvignon Sisterhood” is the latest instalment in Claire’s hectically hilarious life. Fans of Gill Sims will have read her previous books, all of which were riotously funny and SO DAMN RELATABLE. The author nails the frazzled middle aged mother perfectly. Mothers everywhere will read this and relate and that’s why I love these books so much. Gill Sims writes the stuff we’re all probably thinking and feeling but won’t say out loud. Fans of this author will know her ‘Peter and Jane’ blog which is hilariously spot on and never fails to make me laugh.

I’d recommend this book to all exhausted mums and dads and for everyone who wants a light hearted read to make you giggle.

My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an arc in exchange for an unbiased review.

Fully did enjoy that book! Would definitely recommend, it did make me audibly laugh at loud at times but also I felt all the right emotions in a deeper level whilst still maintaining that light-hearted tone.

The kids were portrayed in an accurate way and were both a form of humour as it was them ‘threatening to report Clair to UNICEF for eating vegetables’ that drew me to the book in the first place. But also the kids made me much more appreciative of mum, as haha… 😅

Obviously the ‘Sisterhood’ was fabulous, they each felt with some very real and serious issues and it was nice book showing how friendship can help you through it. I do think all the problems seemed to be a solved a bit magically, however it’s a light hearted comedy book, it would be a bit depressing if they weren’t I suppose. I instantly loved Claire when she was on about all her organising stuff and the ‘FUCKING CALENDAR’. And overall, the very woman power of fuck the patriarchy vibe was fabulous. Absoluetly loved it!

I do think perhaps I would have related to this a bit more if I’d been a bit older, but still very enjoyable and that’s not the books fault at all.

4 stars, would definitely recommend.

Thanks to HarperCollins via Netgalley for a free eARC copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

I love Gill's books. The raw, every day reality of being a working mum, trying to hold everything together. This was no exception. I read this around my own busy, crazy life.

Meet Claire, her adorable, but slightly sticky, children and her Very Busy and Important husband, Andrew.

Claire's hectic life suddenly implodes over the course of a weekend. The Sisterhood are formed, via the children becoming besties, an disasterous book club and a weekend of camping.

I laughed, I cried, I giggled, I almost snorted my Sauvignon Blanc at one point. And I broke my heart too! The Saturday Night Savignon Sisterhood is real, unfiltered and relatable. Sisters are doing it for themselves!

I’ve read all of the Why Mummy Drinks series, and been in the audience for one of Gill Sims’s shows, so I was really excited to be granted my wish for a copy of this latest offering, courtesy of NetGalley and Harper Collins.
Yet again, a romping good read from Gill - the story follows a chronological pattern, drawing on family, school, work and friendships to set up this tale of Claire’s life as it unravels and then re-forms in a different, stronger way.
The whole mess of emotions is here, mixed up with a healthy dose of wit and wisdom. The situations, however dire they are, are recounted using keen observational detail and wicked humour and had me laughing out loud as I recognised so much of it as being so very true to life. From playground encounters with pretentious mums, to frustrating conversations with offspring, and the central theme of a supportive and brutally honest band of female friends to laugh, cry and conquer the world with.
I love that Ellen Green and her mad sister-in-law even manage to get a mention in this new story which is in the same vein, but otherwise not connected to the Why Mummy Drinks series.

Like many other readers, I'm a fan of Gill Sims! The Saturday Night Sauvignon Sisterhood is just as good as the novels from the author's "Why Mummy..." series. I absolutely adore Gill Sims's down-to-earth, humorous writing style, and I'm already looking forward to what might come next. An easy read with plenty to enjoy, I highly recommend this book.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel, at my request, from HarperCollins UK via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

I loved the why mummy series so grabbed this as soon as I spotted it. This is a stand alone following a different character with 2 children so the same humour comes through. The plot is quite different though as she discovers early in the book that her husband has slept with her best friend so is struggling with the betrayal from both of them. She finds a group of friends that support her and they call themselves the Saturday night Sauvignon sisterhood. Again parts of the story are so relatable which makes it funnier I will be reading more by this author

I had really enjoyed the other books by Gill Sim, to the extent that I tried not to read them in public places or eat at the same time as they just made me snigger and laugh out loud and people would stare or I was at risk of choking! This one wasn’t like that - it was more serious in some ways and quite sad also - it delved into some difficult emotions and things that happen in life and was more thoughtful. It was still very funny in bits of course - Gill does do that kind of thing very well.

Another great funny read by gill sims although I have to admit I did miss hearing about Peter and Jane from the previous why mummy books!
The Saturday night Sauvignon sisterhood epitomises female relationships in all their glory from the bitchy school gate mums, the superior still married ones, the cheating best friend but mostly the benefits of true friends that are there for you through thick and thin all ably assisted by a bottle or two of wine!
Where would we all be without great female friendship to help us through life? Keep your friends close, spend time with them, value that friendship as you never know when you will need them most!
Thank you netgalley fir this early read!
