Chicago Police Department detective “Mack” McPherson returns to the Indiana lakes community after 23 years to confront those who murdered his brother and others who covered up the crime. When they suddenly become murder victims, Mack becomes suspect number one, challenging him to track down their killer, a dangerous psychopath on his own mission of retribution.
When I picked up this book (as an e-book, by the way), I was skeptical. I have not read any of this author’s work before. This is a genre that I have also not explored before. However, I was hooked from the first sentence. There is something about a book that starts with a time stamp. You immediately get hooked. I have thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is risky, immaculate in its writing, its characters are well developed. The emotions that it derives from the reader are something that the author has achieved with such ease. One time you are hopeful, then shuttered, then ambitious, then taken aback. I hope I am putting to justice how great this book is. If I could suggest, I hope you pick this book on days that you have nothing much going on, because this will be a time well spent. I would recommend this to anyone that has reader’s block. It is fast-paced, engaging, and will keep you going. You are the lucky lot who gets to experience it for the first time to you who has not read it yet.
Anyone who enjoys a good thriller will find this a fun read. The author Richard Rose has clearly written about an area of Indiana that he knows well, peppering the novel with details and history that gave this story an extra dimension in local color. The book is quick but the pace varies, which I like. It has action and drama, and the wide cast of characters give the reader a sense of realism. Plenty of suspense to keep you turning pages. You may have read several stories like this one, but the setting and writing make this one just different enough that I would still think you'll like it a lot.
This book has a gripping crime story and kept me wanting to turn those pages. It is written very concisely, which helps remove the “fluff” a lot of crime novels tend to have. A crime novel definitely worthy of your time.
Born and raised in Kosciusko County myself, this book kept me wanting more with every page and questioning if there was any bit of truth behind the story. I’ve already recommended it to several other people from the area and I know they will love it too!
