Kentarou Miura (三浦建太郎) was born in Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan, in 1966. He is left-handed. In 1976, at the early age of 10, Miura made his first Manga, entitled "Miuranger", that was published for his classmates in a school publication; the manga ended up spanning 40 volumes. In 1977, Miura created his second manga called Ken e no michi (剣への道 The Way to the Sword), using Indian ink for the first time. When he was in middle school in 1979, Miura's drawing techniques improved greatly as he started using professional drawing techniques. His first dōjinshi was published, with the help of friends, in a magazine in 1982.

That same year, in 1982, Miura enrolled in an artistic curriculum in high school, where he and his classmates started publishing their works in school booklets, as well as having his first dōjinshi published in a fan-produced magazine. In 1985, Miura applied for the entrance examination of an art college in Nihon University. He submitted Futanabi for examination and was granted admission. This project was later nominated Best New Author work in Weekly Shōnen Magazine. Another Miura manga Noa was published in Weekly Shōnen Magazine the very same year. Due to a disagreement with one of the editors, the manga was stalled and eventually dropped altogether. This is approximately where Miura's career hit a slump.

In 1988, Miura bounced back with a 48-page manga known as Berserk Prototype, as an introduction to the current Berserk fantasy world. It went on to win Miura a prize from the Comi Manga School. In 1989, after receiving a doctorate degree, Kentarou started a project titled King of Wolves (王狼, ōrō?) based on a script by Buronson, writer of Hokuto no Ken. It was published in the monthly Japanese Animal House magazine in issues 5 and 7 of that year.

In 1990, a sequel is made to Ourou entitled Ourou Den (王狼伝 ōrō den, The Legend of the Wolf King) that was published as a prequel to the original in Young Animal Magazine. In the same year, the 10th issue of Animal House witnesses the first volume of the solo project Berserk was released with a relatively limited success. Miura again collaborated with Buronson on manga titled Japan, that was published in Young Animal House from the 1st issue to the 8th of 1992, and was later released as a stand-alone tankōbon. Miura's fame grew after Berserk was serialized in Young Animal in 1992 with the release of "The Golden Age" story arc and the huge success of his masterpiece made of him one of the most prominent contemporary mangakas. At this time Miura dedicates himself solely to be working on Berserk. He has indicated, however, that he intends to publish more manga in the future.

In 1997, Miura supervised the production of 25 anime episodes of Berserk that aired in the same year on NTV. Various art books and supplemental materials by Miura based on Berserk are also released. In 1999, Miura made minor contributions to the Dreamcast video game Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage. 2004 saw the release of yet another video game adaptation entitled Berserk Millennium Falcon Arc: Chapter of the Record of the Holy Demon War.

Since that time, the Berserk manga has spanned 34 tankōbon with no end in sight. The series has also spawned a whole host of merchandise, both official and fan-made, ranging from statues, action figures to key rings, video games, and a trading card game. In 2002, Kentarou Miura received the second place in the Osamu Tezuka Culture Award of Excellence for Berserk.[1]

Miura provided the design for the Vocaloid Kamui Gakupo, whose voice is taken from the Japanese singer and actor, Gackt.

Miura passed away on May 6, 2021 at 2:48 p.m. due to acute aortic dissection.

Volume 34 had some of the most gorgeously horrifying spreads I’ve ever seen. It’s probably my favorite volume in terms of art so far, and that’s saying something.

The other two volumes were not nearly as enjoyable. The pirate guy and the fish girl storylines were both kind of silly in my opinion. I’ve thought this for quite a long time, but Guts really doesn’t need to have a minimum of 7 people with him at all times. It’s so overcrowded — it’s nice that Guts has friends, and I don’t dislike them, but he and Schierke can body literally any threat so most of these characters feel superfluous. As usual the best parts were the ones that directly involved the main antagonist, which have been too few and far between. Anyway, despite my gripes I’m still enjoying this manga and am sad I only have a few Miura volumes left.

If I am being objective then this volume gets a 4/5, but because of the first half with Griffith it gets a solid 5/5 because it was that good.

Spoilers:

Man The band of the Hawk against the emperor were epic ngl.
The art was especially spectacular, with so many panels looking like they came out straight from an eldritch horror story.
Griffith's plan to make the Skull Knight appear and use his busted sword in order to fook the world and transform it to Fantasia was EPIC.
The world change was terrifying, epic, and majestic.

The second half was also good with the fishermen village and the introduction of a new cool character that goes by the name ISMA, who is appearantly a Mermaid! I liked her scenes and interactions with Isidoro.
Also that mysterious kid that shows up on full moon is back again, which I am sure is the son of Casca and....Guts, I hope it's Guts.

If this volume could become alive, it would slap me as soon as I closed the last page and shout "you've seen how cool I was? You seen it? Not enough times you b*tch!, go back and enjoy it again!"

Berserk continues to have some of the best artwork I've ever seen in a graphic novel, period. And this novel really shines in the art department, especially with some of the highest quantity and best quality of two page spread art that is genuinely the best I've seen from this artist. I would genuinely love to have some of these pieces as wall art, because they true works of art. And they conveyed the emotions of the story so well, without any use of words. It was great to experience these spreads.

However, this is the first Berserk novel that I did not devour as soon as I picked it up. I'm not sure if its just genial burnout of having consumed nearly 12 volumes in just a couple of months, or if the story has really hit a wall here. The first half of this collection was the better half, containing all the two page spread and having the most powerful story moments. But despite how powerful these moments were, they didn't match the emotional peak of the first Eclipse arc. I think partly because both Guts and Griffith were so far away from each other during these pivotal moments. While I love Guts' focus on Casca's health, him drawing his attention away from Griffith and his mission does take away some of the importance for me. And this conclusion, just feels repetitive. I can see how this was what the last volumes were building up to, but somehow, it just doesn't hit as hard as I wanted it to. And again, that is probably because of Guts' change of direction here.

The second half is what I guess is what I've heard is called the 'Guts on a boat' arc, which supposedly is one of the most drawn out spans of the series. And I can feel it. This was where I really started to lose focus on the storyline, and really, stopped caring about Guts' story. Which is an amazing thing to say, since he has been the emotional pull of the story. And while I like Guts' attention being given solely over to Casca and I like seeing this lighter side of him, I dunno, its just not hitting the right way. And this second half, the story feels so minor compared to what has happened. Guts right now is moving away from the more important worldbuilding moments, and its getting frustrating.

I have no doubt this is still building up to something amazing, but with two deluxe volumes left to go, I'm a bit worried.

The artwork still continues to be the best, and while I'm not a fan of how Guts' Berserk Armor is drawn, the attention to detail in all of the art, no matter how minor the character or panel is, is breathtaking. And again, those two page art spreads, my god, gorgeous. But I've finally hit that snag in the Berserk story that isn't hitting the same way as the rest of the series unfortunately.

No tears !

There are mermaids and pirates and unicorns it just keeps getting more and more whimsical !

Instead of having thoughts about anything important I just wanna be squish about guts bc as if goes on he becomes more and more my favourite guy ever🥹 the current version of him could not be more different than where we started and it’s just been so lovely to watch the whole thing.

I once asked him for an apology with tears but what I didn’t realize is that the entire rest of the series would BE the apology with tears... I love that it was never made a plot point that he was trying to change Casca's mind about him, and I also love that she never has like a "coming to jesus" moment where she realizes that he's ACTUALLY trying to look out for her.. her dislike for him is literally the only way that her character gets any say in anything.. and she's more than fair for that obviously.

I find their dynamic fascinating and I do wonder hypothetically if they are ever able to talk again when the vibe is gonna be for real for real

The ending of the Falcon of The Millennium Empire Arc is fucking amazing. A complete upheavel of how this world works, it’s a great evolution of this story. The fight against the Sea God is also damn great. Lots of nasty action, some good horror concepts, and some great character work. This series is running again.

Let me sum up Berserk for you:
"Let me guess, we're offerings for the festival"
"Again...?! It's happening again?! Give me a break!"

"It's hard to tell which side's more monstrous."

Guts getting back to himself because he saw Casca will always be my favourite moment

The beginning chapters carry this volume so hard. Holy. Skull Knight pulling up on Griffith and that whole double page spread literally got me out of my seat. The art just keeps on getting better and better. Zodd’s surprised look was everything lol and I really thought this would have hindered Griffith in some way but I did the complete opposite. The slash Skull Knight attacked Griffith with, he literally just warped reality, took that slash and applied it to the god emperor, opening up the new world.

A perfect climax and the art that follows is some of the most beautiful art I’ve seen period. It was like going through a gallery at a museum, HOLY. And it’s even better because it impacts the plot heavily and moves the story forward, it isn’t just spectacle. That part alone for me was a 6/5, one of the greatest moments I have ever read in manga and the grand scale of it just made it feel so ethereal, I can’t get over how good this was.

But the reason I’ve given this volume a 3/5 is because of what follows. The Sea-god/boat arc. I’m not gonna lie, this was kind of hard to get through. Even though the art is amazing and the fights are pretty clean, I can’t help but feel like this is stunting the story. It doesn’t feel like the story has been pushed forward at all this entire rest of the volume and the characters haven’t really developed either. And on some of the parts, it genuinely feels like Miura was just rehashing parts from other arcs and I hate that because it becomes repetitive and there is no sense of tension.

The pirates man, I’m so sorry, I do not care about those pirates at all. Holy, man, I wish they were just removed from the story. They don’t feel dangerous or threatening at all, there is no tension for them (they never make me feel like the crew is in trouble) they come back multiple times and each time I just want to roll my eyes, I’m over them already. I honestly don’t care about the merrow girl at all, I don’t feel any attachment to her and I don’t even get a sense that she is important to the story.

Not much more to say about this volume, but I will say I liked Farnese finally using some OP magic! I thought that was sick and I can’t wait to see how much more she develops. I always like Guts and Schierke teaming up, they give me Deku and Eri vibes. I don’t see at all how the Sea-God is important to the overall story or characters, but for what it’s worth I like the fights that have come out of his antagonism. But all in all, such a crazy volume, the peak of the story at the beginning, and then the lowest the story has ever been at the end.

(For the purposes of the reading challenge, this counts as half a book)

CW: inappropriate depictions of children

The first third of the book is an incredible visual treat. The sheer amount of imagination on display is awe-inspiring. Kentaro Miura's appetite for new, novel imagery that references every fantasy-related concept imaginable is enormous. It briefly injected me with a feeling of being on board with the series again. We even get a glimpse of Femto again saying mysterious shit about the greatest light only exists within darkness (I am not sure what it means but I doubt it will be explored or followed up on).

Unfortunately, everything post-Fantasia is more wheel-spinning nonsense that it's barely worth commenting on. Guts struggles to restrain his inner demon, but Schierke is there to, once again, prevent Guts from having to actually make a decision about anything. The other characters are there, for the most part, to be awed by Guts or make technical, pithy contributions. Isidro actually gets to fight someone and Farnese makes a magic shield, but these moments don't feel rooted in character growth. It's just the characters numerically leveling up. There is no inner turmoil
that has to be reckoned with. Just blandly walking forward without having to sort out their own thoughts. Getting character growth without inner struggle and anguish. Transformation should feel like dying and being reborn, whether it is negative or positive growth. The character development in late Berserk is too easy and uncomplicated.

I also have to comment on my increasing discomfort with Miura's sexualization of minors. Isma is in her teens and the comic goes out of its way to have her fully nude and to make gags about Isidro staring at her boobs. It just sucks to see. It's unnecessary and gross.

Vol. 34 - As Ganishka has transformed into a giant demon form, he also unleashes a countless number of creatures that are nightmarish and mythical. We also get to learn about his backstory and see Griffith in his dark armor.

Vol. 35 - Still at sea, our heroes on the Seahorse face some of Ganishka’s monsters in water. Later, they land on a mysterious island only to learn that it’s the home of a sea god and his monster minions who will put Guts in a tough position.

Vol. 36 - Guts must protect his team and the ship from the sea beasts while wearing his dark armor while Farnese, now a mage uses her new powers to protect the ship with a barrier. He also goes underwater where he’ll find the sea god, and other fiendish foes who’ll, break his way into the waters. It’s also revealed that the gang’s new acquaintance, the flighty Isma is a merrow (mermaid in Irish mythology).

A (100%/Outstanding)

Wow. I’m tempted to call the beginning of this volume an all-time high in the series so far. The depiction of Griffith’s victory over the Kushan emperor and the rise of Falconia was incredibly powerful, with page after page of breathtaking artwork and a sparse use of text that made the whole sequence feel like a deeply significant development for the Berserk universe.

While the Innsmouth side plot that follows this feels somewhat predictable, I actually kind of like the idea of Guts’ group sailing from place to place and having some smaller, semi–self-contained adventures. I feel like it's a concept that could have been used at some earlier points in the series following the eclipse where the overall plot sometimes felt a bit unsteady for me.

The fight with the sea monsters that comes afterward felt a bit underwhelming though, as it's hard not to see it as just another small bump in the road for the gang that will be resolved without too much trouble. Still, I’m interested to see where the sea journey will take us next.

I think I kind of understand what everyone means when they talk about the "boat arc". It's not like it's a bad story, all of our characters are here and they have things to do, it just feels a little wrong having our protagonists escaping the land they came from, while the antagonist has successfully taken over the land. Why are we moving further away from the climax of the story? We should be breaking into the Hawks citadel, not looking for a new continent. But whatever, I think there are 2 of these volumes left and I know there's no ending, so I'm just hoping the end that we get is somewhat satisfying.

The opening story (Griffith and the Hawks return) has some of the best full page spreads I’ve ever seen. This is such a huge moment in the story and it looks EPIC.

Guts is on a boat fighting pirates, crashes, lands on a small island (very Innsmouth)and fights the islands sea god. The armor lets Guts push through the pain of a physical body and fights like a god BUT he can lose himself if he goes berserk.

The level of detail in this manga continues to astound. I strongly preferred the first half of this book, featuring Griffith. The stuff he does in this volume is wild. Honestly, he's so overpowered at this point, I don't know what Guts can possibly do. And speaking of, the stuff he does is cool I guess, and it's good to see his entourage increasing their skills, but these fights are getting kind of same-y.

The Pirate captain gets old really fast but I don’t mind the boat arc as everyone kind of needed a break. Everything with Grithith is solid and perfect and seeing a lot of those double spreads during those scenes was jaw dropping

This volume goes quick because it's short on text and heavy on art. I don't mind at all.
