Awkward by Svetlana Chmakova meets the HiLo series in this second book in the action-packed Sort of Super middle grade graphic novel series that follows superhero Wyatt and his sidekicks on an undercover mission to summer camp!
Wyatt and his sister Adeline are determined to investigate an extinct volcano hundreds of miles from home that Adeline believes to be related to their mother’s mysterious disappearance. At first it seems like an impossible mission until they realize there’s a summer camp conveniently situated near the base of the volcano. So it’s off to summer camp for Wyatt, Adeline, and their buddies Beto and Nara. But when they get there, they find it impossible to sneak away from the heavily chaperoned grounds.
Opportunity presents itself by way of the Magma Cup, the camp’s tournament-style series of mental and physical competitions where the finalists compete in an overnight—and less chaperoned—scavenger hunt on the volcano itself!
Unable to use their abilities, can the super-team win their bracket and ditch their counselors to explore the secrets of the volcano and the connection it has to Wyatt and Adelina’s missing mother…or will the whole thing blow up in their faces?
This book is amazing! If you haven't read the first book you need to go right now and pick that up to read it so you can enjoy this second book. This series is captivating and beautifully illustrated. The storyline keeps you extremely invested and it's so much fun throughout! The characters are charming, heartwarming, and you can't help but root for them and cheer them on in their adventures! I love the story, the artwork is outstanding, just an overall amazing and quick read! This book has heart, family, superhero powers, and a fantastic story. Would highly recommend to anyone and everyone! Thanks to the author & Edelweiss for the ARC! Loved this book!
Graphic Novel I received an electronic ARC from Aladdin through Edelweiss+. Wyatt, Adeline and their friends, Nara and Beto, are back for further adventures. Readers see them enjoy summer activities with and without Wyatt and Adeline's super powers. Then Adeline asks for help attending a camp beside a volcano to search for her mom. This volcano erupted on the day she disappeared and Adeline hopes there is a connection. The four compete in the summer camp challenges and find a way to get inside the volcano. They do meet a super being but it is not their mom. When the volcano erupts again, Wyatt and Adeline use their powers to save everyone at the camp from harm. I appreciate the hints at the end for the next book in the series. Gapstur captures the energy and anxieties for these four kids as they compete and work together to solve problems. The artwork shows the excitement and action so readers feel they are participating too.
This series is so charming. Great art, humor, and characters! The brother and genius sister mostly get along, which I love, but I want to give a spotlight to their friends, Nara and Beto. These two are so sweet and selfless! I’d love to have friends like them. More importantly, Wyatt and Adeline appreciate them and acknowledge their sacrifices.
For this book, there’s less of a focus on the superpowers at this wacky camp because it’s a cover for Wyatt and Adeline to find their lost mother.
I like the bits of depth here. Wyatt’s insecure outside of his powers, and Adeline took their mother’s disappearance the hardest akin to grief.
Also, the art excels. Dynamic poses and great paneling. Nothing stays the same from page to page in the best way possible. All in a cartoony style. I really like the art here.
That said, if you wanted your summer camp adventure with a side of superheroes, this is for you.
Also, I'd saved this novel from the summer when I bought it at Eric's signing for "when I needed it" - which turned out to be "having to keep a cat still while you fed him by esophageal tube for 20+ minutes" because Wyatt and Adeline (omg <3 Adeline) were the perfect way to keep my mind occupied but the rest of me still so Shakespeare would stay put.
This is the second book in a graphic novel series. The first was a LA Young Readers Choice book for 3rd-5th for 2024-25, and my five-year-old son and I HAD to read this second one to try to satiate our suspense! However, clearly we’ll be waiting for the third in the series. I won’t give it away, but there’s a continuous mystery in the series. The characters are sweet. I really liked reading about the challenges at this summer camp with an athletic competition of teams. It was fun to read the “annoying announcer’s” voice during the challenges. We read this book in two sittings.
Off for a few weeks at summer camp, the kids can't use their super powers due to the proximity of others, and this outing basically becomes just another "kids at camp" story with endless competitions involving outdoor activities and problem solving. The search for the missing mom continues, and the epilogue hints at more nefarious doings to come, but I'm not sure I want to continue with the series.
There is a smidgen more of a fleshed out story in this volume, and more traditional superhero action, along with more tradition "coming of age" / growing up pains. Friendship and family (biological and found) are also slightly more explored. The ending is a tad more "deep" than the overall comedy feeling would make you think. Fun, bold, brightly colored images, that are bubbly, too. Reluctant readers will get into as much as a regular reader.
This book was amazing!! The art was fantastic, the storytelling amazing, and my boy Wyatt kept me laughing out loud throughout my read through! Eric did a fantastic job at keeping the heart of Wyatt and his friends at the forefront of the book, with very little need for the theatrics of superpowers to carry the book.
My kids loved it. It was a great sequel to the first and they loved the ongoing mystery. The friendships between the main characters and how they support each other throughout the book are a great example to kids this age. Highly recommend!
Figuring out superhero-ness, dealing with summer camp competitions, and hoping to find a trace of a disappeared mother make this a read with non-stop action, a little chaos, and friendships to embrace.
Wyatt's kind of figuring out this superhero thing, and with his sister, Adeline, at his side, it seems to be going a little more smoothly. Sort of. When Adeline's research finally reveals the first sign of a possible clue in their mother's disappearance four years ago, he's ready to do anything he can so the two of them can find her again. And that means Summer Camp next to a volcano. With their two best friends at their sides, the foursome head off, hoping to find even a hint which might help them. Instead, they find a camp, which is centered around competitions, and the winning team gets a chance to tour the volcano. The competition is fiercer than fierce, and Wyatt and his sister know they can't use their powers to win...but that seems impossible.
This is a high-quality graphic novel with colorful illustrations, tons of action, and characters to root for. Wyatt might have all sorts of amazing powers, but he's just awkward and goofy enough to keep him down-to-earth. While tempted, he doesn't constantly grab back on his powers and tries to handle as much as he can (even when the going gets tough) as a regular kid...who just happens to wear his superhero suit under his clothes just in case. His sister has her own powers, but again, keeps these under wraps as much as possible and uses her head to get through difficulties first. It makes for a pair, which is easy to identify with, carries a touch of silliness, and has the fun side of bursting free and doing the impossible when really, really necessary. And this doesn't always work out quite as planned.
The graphics are well done, carry darkness and light, and bring the dangerous as well as the humorous situations across nicely. The text is easy to read in each scene and balances nicely with the imagery. A sense of urgency plays subtly along with the more distinct-lined style to swing more in a classic superhero direction.
It's a quick and grabbing read from start to finish. This can be read alone but, of course, is better read as a series. I received an ARC and enjoyed this fun tale.
A fun book about a goofy kid who has superpowers. In this sequel, Wyatt and his sister Adeline recruit their friends Nara and Beto to join them at a summer camp close to a volcano that Adeline believes holds clues to their mother's disappearance. With humor, heart, and an exciting camp competition, this story delivers characters to root for in a funny mystery-adventure combo.
