If you enjoy military history, you are going to LOVE this book!!

Sparta was definitely a follower of "military might" and the many conflicts and wars they were involved in speak to their readiness, and almost enthrallment with warfare.

Sparta did have different aspects, such as their myths, legends, and the history of the Trojan War. You will also read about women and their lives, the military, learn some of their dishes (one does NOT sound appealing), and other aspects of daily lives for the Spartans.

Honestly, I enjoyed reading through this book. There were aspects of Sparta that I was more knowledgeable about, but there were pieces that were new to me. It was a fun and informative read. One of those, I think I could probably sit down and read again!

Highly recommend reading this great book!

I read a lot of history books and this one is definitely top notch. The authors present a well-written basic overview of all-things-Sparta beginning with around 1100 BCE. They do a great job of explaining the different historical events, people, and cultures which made Sparta what it was and ultimately became. I was impressed at how interesting they made all of the events and were careful to explain how history is recorded and the different points of view regarding events. There are some great maps and a large number of references for anyone interested in a more detailed study.

One thing to note...whoever wrote the material obviously loves to talk about the subject. You can tell just by the way it is written that the authors respect as well as enjoy sharing the known knowledge of this extremely important warrior society in ancient Greece. I highly recommend this read.

I first read The Grand Strategy of Classical Sparta: The Persian Challenge (Yale Library of Military History) by Paul Rahe.

I still wanted to brush up a little more on that subject, since I had enjoyed that history so much, I took a leap of faith with this book.

When I opened Sparta: An Enthralling Overview of the Spartans and their city-state in ancient Greece along with the Greco-Persian wars, Peloponnesian war etc, I didn't expect it to match up to its bigger brother in any meaningful way.

I was wrong, this book was throughly enjoyable and I would highly recommend it.

The writer did a great job of summarizing the history of Sparta, including some colorful maps and illustrations that I felt were done very nicely

I also enjoyed many of the laconic phrases in the book, there were a number of very good ones, including one short spoiler below

“Leonidas, the son of Anaxandridas and the brother of Cleomenes, in answer to a man who remarked, ‘Except for your being king, you are no different from the rest of us,’ said, ‘But if I were no better than you others, I should not be king.’”

Enjoy,

Good Read

This book is an overview of Sparta from its beginnings, the lives of the men and women.

This is an interesting book for those that want to know a little more about Sparta other than just the battle of Thermopylae.

I found it interesting about the black soup. Definitely worth the five stars for the knowledge.

fair narrative, has good information

Sparta is somewhat of a mystery. This book provides the reader with basic historical data, yet it lacks deeper detail. Sparta deserves more
