Rate this book
Few writers have put Peter Parker through the wringer quite like Nick Spencer! His epic and sprawling run begins with an alien invasion, a troublesome doppelganger and a shocking new roommate: the villainous Boomerang! And things only get wilder from there for Spider-Man as an old romance is rekindled, a new friendship forms…and J. Jonah Jameson causes a different kind of trouble as a fiercely pro-Spidey shock jock! Threats mount including the Enforcers, Taskmaster and Black Ant, Kraven the Hunter, Electro and the new Sinister Syndicate! Carnage wreaks havoc, Spider-Man 2099 returns from the future and Black Cat does what she does best — but who is the horrifying villain lurking in the shadows?

A lighter feel to Spider-man. At least in the first arc and Hunted storlyline. Taking up the mantle after what i I feel is my personal favorite run by Dan Slott. It can´t be an easy task to setup another huge Amazing Spider-man adventure. But it kept me intrigued with the new villain and I was hoping that the eventual reveal would stick the landing!

1300 pages done! Wow that was a lot. And hard to hold while reading.

My biggest take away from this was how much I like Ryan Ottley’s art. I really loved his inker and colourists work too on his issues, Cliff Rathburn and Laura Martin. This was my first Ottley illustrated book and I will definitely seek out more from him, most likely starting with Invincible.
On the art train of thought, this book had really great art throughout. Which is quite surprising that they kept the quality that high while using a dozen or so pencillers and probably 2 dozen inkers and colourists. This is the main reason I bumped this up to a 4 star review.

Plot wise, it wasn’t amazing. There were a handful of short arcs with some very small tie ins to later issues or arcs, and then 2 larger stories.
I wanted the arcs to be a lot more connected. It felt like any time a new element was brought into the story/world, it would be forgotten just as quick and not utilized to its fullest.
I did like the build up to the first big storyline, dropping small clues and hints and parallel storytelling. But then the big event wasn’t that great and had some of the issues I just mentioned. Things get resolved fairly quickly and there are no lasting effects.
The second half of the book is a bit of a mess plot wise as it’s a few short arcs and event tie ins that don’t serve the overall story very well.
Then the final inclusion in this omnibus is Full Circle. Which was a cool idea and I’m glad they tried it out, but it wasn’t very good unfortunately.

The main redeeming factor in the writing, was the dialogue and narrations. Nick Spencer did a great job in this department. Even during arcs that weren’t overly interesting, he kept the pacing, energy, and wit flowing so it always made for a page turner. Really like Spencer’s comedic writing and it played a big part in a lot of issues in this collection. He also was able to completely switch that off and give some really dark and serious tones too very well.

So overall, the strong artwork and dialogue outshines the average to good plots and storylines. While I have no immediate want to read the second omnibus, I may come back to it later. Mainly to see the conclusion to a mystery character that was teased throughout the whole book but was never fully expanded on.

The Amazing Spider-Man omnibus by Nick Spencer.

I love Spidey but i was not the biggest fan of Spencer's The Superior Foes of Spider-Man. I thought that run was just ok. I bought this book mostly for the art team. Ryan Otlley and Humberto Ramos. Both killer artists. BUT, i was very wrong on thinking Spencer could not handle Spider-Man. He has made a fantastic run on everyone's favorite wall-crawler ! The cartoony artwork works wonders with Spencer's funny script, and i was really amazed by this and blew throught this chunky omnibus. Alot of great spidey villains are here and have time to shine, especially Kraven the Hunter with a suberb huge arc, but also Venom, JJJ Jameson, Mysterio, and the Lizard. Boomerang from the Superior run has a big role as a shitty room mate who is really funny and that character grew so much to me. Its lighthearded, its fun, its action, its anything you want from Spider-Man. This omnibus ends with a crazy idea. Spiderman : Full Circle, were Jonathan Hickman, Nick Spencer, Jason Aaron, Al Ewing, Chip Zdarsky, Gerry Duggan and Kelly Thomson each have a story that another writer has to finish blind. Drawn by super artists, Bachallo, Allred, Mark Bagley and more this was wild. And weird. Another great Spidey omni finished.

I am a huge fan of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN and have loved the character since my toddler days in Spidey underoos. However, I was driven away from it by the Clone Saga like so many others. Any chance of my returning was crushed by One More Day--or so I thought. The books written by Spencer are just plain fun.

Spider-Man loses his billion dollar company, doctorate, and is back to sharing an apartment with two other guys. One of them being Boomerang and the other one being Robbie Robertson's son. Some of this isn't great as I hate Peter being accused of plagiarism and having a crime on his record. However, getting him to be Doc Connor's lab assistant is awesome. There's just the right mix of humor and wackiness.

It's a celebration of classic Spidey continuity and oddity.

I thought the cover was Spider-Man getting choked by a web and grabbing at his own throat? But it’s actually him shooting a web with his hand just in front of his throat. Weird!

Ryan Ottley is perfect for Amazing Spider-Man.

Amazing Spider-Man, I’ve kinda come to accept, is a quantity of quality thing, but like… in a good way.

The first half is very strong, with a slow progression through the Kraven storyline, and the back half is a bit more scattered, with mixed quality, and seems like it was interrupted by several crossover type stories which aren't included. Still a fun spider adventure!

I accept that ASM is what it is, and know it could be worse.

Honestly, it’s not bad but it could be better. Lot of good points to this run so far and nothing especially egregious.
