Fairy Tales that Bite Back #2

Potheads: Allie and the Wicked Tea Party

Rate this book

Ever read those Florida man stories? Hello, I’m Allie. I’m on a bad drug trip in Wonderland, Florida.

It started with a getaway to get over my ex. Some guy with a really creepy smile gives me drugs in an alley behind a bar when I’m just trying to get back to my playing card themed motel. Next thing I know, there’s a guy wearing a rabbit's head and leather pants pacing outside my motel room ranting about how he’s late. I follow him down an alleyway and fall headfirst into some room I’m sure to get hepatitis in. All I know is this place is called the Underground. Nothing is safe to eat or drink. Mice shift into men. That’s not normal tea at this crazy tea party I just crashed.

Someone help. I’m deep underground in Wonderland, Florida. The weird guy obsessed with hats says there’s an evil Druid queen with a pet demon called a Jabberwock terrorizing the Underground. They tricked me down here to start a revolution. The Queen of Hearts is a sick, twisted bitch. Everyone at that tea party might be totally mad, but so am I because I’ve agreed to stay and help bring her down.

Potheads is a reverse harem twisted version of Alice in Wonderland. It’s part of the Fairy Tales That Bite Back Series but can be read as a standalone.

I read this in August but I am way behind with writing reviews because papers have taken precedence over reading and Goodreads. The title clearly indicates that this is DEFINITELY adult. Beyond the use of opium which was a common thing at the time of the original Carrol novel, there is lots of sex that is not vanilla. TRIGGER Warnings are 100% necessary for sexual abuse, drug use, pointless murder, loss of a spouse and probably some other things I forgot to list.

Let’s talk characters:
Allie - she was struggling with a breakup so she opted to move to Florida. She may not be the best decision maker but I actually didn’t hate her. I often struggle with female characters who are written into bad or weird situations because they react so ditsy like.
Chesney - based on the name you know who he is. As the role of the Cheshire Cat dictates he is incredibly mischievous and playful. To be clear he’s a cat shifter.
Moseley - the character names tend to reflect their roles so Mosely is the Dormouse. Which honestly I forgot about from the book. Sorry Moseley. I liked how he was the more calm love interest that wasn’t actively pursuing Allie’s affections even though he definitely wanted it. He provided some balance to the cast.
Hatter - doesn't the Mad Hatter being an incubus make a weird amount of sense? Yes definitely. Maybe it’s just because the show I grew up with was the Johnny Depp Alice adaptation but this was fun. Outside Hatter’s sexual gravitas he is caring and oh so kind. He is supremely wronged by the Queen of Hearts and is trying to cope so he’s a whole lot of crazy.
Leveret - is the White Rabbit and he is very territorial of Allie and he has great banter with Chesney. He wasn’t my favorite but I suppose he played his roll in the group scene as there can’t be a rabbit character without rabbit’s in spring puns.
(Guy #5) - I am not going to list because it feels kinda spoilery. BUT he was probably my favorite love interest. He had to overcome so much emotional baggage. His plot line is the trigger warning for rape. I also loved that they portrayed this figure as so much more than his traditional role in the classic. Also the society he comes from sounds so damn interesting.
The Queen of Hearts - I hate her. That’s all I have to say about that. She’s also kinda one of the most boring classic Disneyish story villains.
Tweedledee and Tweedledum - There isn’t much on them but I loved their wife Onyx . She is super sassy, fierce and doesn’t sensor her words.

With this cast you’d think this would be at least a 4 star read but I had a few problems. This book's writing feels very weak even compared to the first book. You’re drawing from other people’s work so you need to make it shine and be different. The journey is kind of dry and honestly my love and descriptions of the characters may be my mind's compensation for lack of writing development. The title didn’t work for me either. It implies drugs which there were but there wasn’t weed which is what Potheads implies?

Loved the cameos from the first book in the series but did it do anything for the plot… Not Really.

Well.. someone did for sure take drugs here, question is was it Allie, the author or me? 😂 It was as crazy, or even more, as Alice in the Wonderland. Craziness level maxed. But gosh, can we speak of sexiness level. All the guys are hot hot hot. The illustrations did add nice touch to the story. I liked how author did morphed characters of original story into something more and new. The story itself have little bit of childlessness in it (all sex and flirt taken a part of course). All in all it was a pleasant read, which kept me interested.

I'm not completely sure, but I'm pretty positive this was my first book by Trepagnier and I was decently impressed. The lay of the story seemed to flow with Carroll's classic tale, but the modern aspects made it more palatable to today's age. The unique harem-ness to the tale gave it more of a storyline that was right up my alley. At times, the writing style just seemed to be thrown onto the page, but the randomness of everything that happens kept my interest, even with the breaks in the flow. I absolutely love retellings and would recommend the book to anyone who likes weird takes on much loved classics!

I loved this book! Allie needs an escape after her latest breakup and fate brings her to Wonderland, FL. At first, it just seems like a boring small town, but she soon finds out that there’s more than meets the eye and her world will be forever changed.
Chesney, the Cheshire Cat, was my favorite of her guys. I was drawn to the mischief and playfulness of his character. Leveret, the White Rabbit, was territorial of Allie and I like his and Chesney’s constant banter. Mosely, the Doormouse, was great in the kitchen and wasn’t vying for Allie’s attention even though he wanted it. March, the March Hare, was quiet and kind. Hatter, the Mad Hatter, was hopeful, caring, and sinful.
All of the characters in this book were well developed and each played an important role. Tweedledee and Tweedledum have a higher status role than just bumbling twins. I thought the Queen’s whole vibe was very different, but still true to the evilness. My favorite side character was probably Onyx, Twiddy and Tweedle’s wife, because she was fierce and had no filter.
JB’s take on this classic tale is familiar, yet unique. I liked the idea of multiple undergrounds and their history, politics, substance use, food, and residents. I thought it was great that we got to see the original Alice that we all know and a different version of how her life turned out. I really enjoyed the illustrations and recipes that were included. This book was filled with trippy effects, supernaturals, and steam inside of an 80’s underground with a trailer park. I wish this story was longer because I would love to get to know their underground more, but I look forward to seeing what’s next for this series of retold tales!

I've read other books by this author. This book. . . Well it start off very amateurish, almost as though the author has never written a story before. There was no world-building or description whatsoever. Everything was stated just matters of fact. Allie's journey through Wonderland topside through the rabbit hole until she met with the Hatter was so dry that almost put the story down. The story started to pick up once the author started to veer away from the original AIW story. It's still slow-going, almost to the point of painful waiting for it to finally pick. And why is it called "Potheads"?? There is no smoking involved.
The only pots, are teapots. Nothing really steamy happens until the end so I would classify this as a very slow RH. There is some tie-in to other books by the author as she has cameos by some of the Seven Deadly Sins. Overall, the author has written better and this would be a pass for me.

Warning: this is a definitely a fairy tale that bites back. Definitely not for little ones either. Very adult!!! Couldn’t put it down!!!

If you have not read the blurb, I would recommend skipping it and reading the story straight on. I did and it was much more fun relating it to what I knew. Not that I do not recommend reading blurbs.

This is Alice in a totally different light. Can you tell who represents who from your knowledge of Alice? Some are easy and some are not. Where does the name Leveret come from? I had to look it up. Nice play.

I love the references to other things. As a matter of fact, I would recommend keeping a piece of paper and pen handy to write them down. Would be interesting to see just how many total there are. I am thinking of at least five while writing this. How many can you find?

Easy to read. Funny in spots, and tragic for some characters (poor ‘Bob’). You will love this story.

This is my honest and freely given review. I did receive an ARC book.

Our heroine is trying to get away from a bad experience so she takes a trip. In more ways that one.

This story is part of a fairy tale retelling series, but it is a complete standalone. No prior reading required.

This is a very intriguing retelling of Alice in Wonderland, set in Florida of all places. The story is well written and easy to read but it is going to challenge you to wrap your mind around the bizarre happenings in the world. The characters are well developed and while some may seem familiar, don't let that bother you. I found the story to have a delightfully bizarre and humorous touch throughout, making it a lot of fun to read. Overall, a fast and fun read which left me looking for more in this vein.

Highly recommended

Fun stand alone book with a little bit of cross over.

Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...

1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.

2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.

3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.

4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.

5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.

First of all the little drawings were awesome. Secondly I just loved that this wasnt like the normal alice in wonderland. Allie is an awesome character. She flips out at first then gets into the swing of things. All the normal characters are there. The mad hatter, march hare, white rabbit, and the doormouse, just with a twist. I'll never be able to watch the regular Alice in wonderland after reading this book. Hehehe. I cant wait to read more and more from this author. She's one of my favorites.

Well that was a strange and wonderful ride. It starts slow and weird like any drug trip or the slow clicking rise to the top of the roller coaster but hang on because after that it shoots off like a rocket. The action never stops and the magic and wonder of the Wonderland Underground comes to life. The harem aspect is slow burn but once it catches the fire burns super hot. There are some triggers to watch for including drug use, enslavement and sexual abuse by the evil queen but they are not the strongest points in the book at all. Triumph and HEA reigns in Wonderland.

I was scrolling for Alice in wonderland retelling and found this

I decided to give the book and author a try since it was kindle unlimited.. Definitely a mad ride. The beginning I kinda wasn't getting into it because Allie didn't seem believable enough in her actions but I decided to see what happened once she reached the underground and was glad I did. The story was steamy but tender, thrilling but funny, and generally an opium placed mad tea party of a good read. Definitely going to go try snow White now

Holy Moly! ....... what a crazy new spin on Alice in Wonderland. I knew this book was going to be good but when I was reading it, it just blew my mind. Allie and her men supply some craziness to supplement the action packed adventure. I loved the new modern day twist that was put on the story with the supernatural aspect and why choose. If you like Alice in Wonderland this is a fabulous new version for you to enjoy! Loved it!! 💜🖤

To start things off, this story is incredibly eccentric. Much like you would expect with a genuine Alice in Wonderland story. You need to be able to read past the characters way of phrasing things. Once you can do that it is incredibly enjoyable!
TW: Rape is mentioned

Note to author: thank you for actually including a healing time for the character who was a victim.

After a bad break up, Allie decides to take a vacation in Wonderland. But one night after drinking she's offered drugs by a guy with a strange smile. Too drunk to think straight she takes one pill. The next day she sees a guy with a habbit head running late and decides to follow. And end up in Underground, a weird place with even weird people and things. And she apparently has to defeat the Queen!

This is a very crazy book. But I loved it! I really liked that the author focus on the story and leaves the more hot parts more to the end. I enjoyed this book a lot.

Well I honestly have no idea how to explain this book holy cow. I think there's magic in it that just explodes for some of the crazy that happens. I love the teasers for the two book series she mentions. I also love the blend of classic Alice and movie Alice plus the authors flare. You just have to read it to believe it.

This is a really weird interpretation at Alice in Wonderland, with a paranormal reverse harem twist. The characters are interesting, I wasn’t sure about the storyline, but the author really made it work. Lots of fun, and very entertaining.

A new take on the story of Alice in Wonderland for the modern time. It was such a fun thing to read. As a fan of J.B. Trepagnier and fairy tales, I was looking forward to reading this, especially after reading the Snow White retelling.

You get to see almost all of the characters from the original Alice in Wonderland but in a completely different way. The title of the book really gives you a hint of what is going on in the Underground of Wonderland.

If you love retellings, reverse harems and you don’t mind shape shifters, then this book is for you. It’s funny, well paced and it keeps you wanting more. It’s a place of magic, fun and wonder. If I could, I’d visit this place too!

Best Alice story yet!

The first few chapters are terrible, they're rushed and sound like a middle schooler wrote them. Fear not, it gets much, much better, hang in there! Alice follows a dude wearing a rabbit head down a hole and she finds her way to a mad tea party. This book was amazing!

Down the rabbit hole

I like the way it mentioned the other books in the series as a little Easter egg, that was really cool cause I was like I KNOW THAT ONE. Banxiety was real but it was understandable why it wasn't a thing before and when it happens hold on to you're hat cause it's a wild ride. Very cool story and I'm looking forward to reading the next in this series.

JB Trepagnier did a great job on Potheads, the plot and characters were strong. The story was written well, it was filled with mystery and so much more. The characters journey had it's ups and downs but they were strong together.
I enjoyed this story. Thanks, JB Trepagnier. Good work :)
