About the author

Katie Kirby is a writer and illustrator who lives by the sea in Hove with her husband, two sons and dog Sasha.

She has a degree in Advertising and Marketing and after spending several years working in London media agencies, which basically involved hanging out in fancy restaurants and pretending to know what she was talking about, she had some children and decided to start a blog called 'Hurrah for Gin' about the gross injustice of it all.

Many people said her sense of humour was silly and immature so she is now having a bash at writing children's fiction. The Extremely Embarrassing Life of Lottie Brooks is her first novel.

Katie likes gin, rabbits, over-thinking things, the smell of launderettes and Monster Munch. She does not like losing at board games or writing about herself in the third person.

Jestem w wieku mamy Lottie, moja córka w wieku Lottie ale obie świetnie bawimy się czytając tę serię. Drugi tom trzyma poziom. Jest napisany z ogromnym wyczuciem obecnych czasów, tak żeby trafiał w sedno, pozwalał utożsamiać się dziewczynkom czytającym z główną bohaterką. Realia są współczesne co jest na plus ale myślę że z tym jaka jest Lottie, co przeżywa, jak to jest dorastać, można się utożsamić niezależnie od tego czy 12 lat mamy dzisiaj, czy mieliśmy 5 lat temu czy może 15, 20 i więcej lat temu ;) Autorce udało się znakomicie zbalansować humor z przesłaniem - bez cienia moralizatorstwa. Gdzieś między wierszami te życiowe mądrości i ogromna dawka ciepła i wsparcia. Szczerze polecam

Lottie returns with more embarrassing mishaps and friendship trials in this second book in a (hopefully long-running!) series.

This time she has a new baby sister, Bella, to contend with and her best friend Molly is back (yay!) so Lottie has to work out how to balance old friends, new friends and frenemies (not yay!). And all of this while anxiously anticipating the advent of boobs, spots, periods and boys... puberty is A LOT(tie)!

Similar in tone and content to Louise Rennison's Confessions of Georgia Nicolson series, or - to go back even further in time - girlhood Judy Blume classics, but obviously updated for a modern audience, Katie Kirby delivers a funny, cringy, relatable romp for tweens upward.

Looking forward eagerly to Book 3!

Nie spodziewałam się (przy pierwszym tomie), że tak pokocham tę serię, a czuję do niej jeszcze większą miłość, ponieważ czytam ją z synami, którzy również uwielbiają te książki.
Cudowne książki.

PS. Moi chłopcy mają 7 i 11 lat. Myślę, że będzie idealna dla dzieciaków 9+.

Epistolêre romans vir jong volwassenes se gewildheid kan nie betwis word nie. Die dagboekformaat van trefferrreekse soos Jeff Kinney se Diary of a Wimpy Kid en Rachel Reneé Rousseau se Dork Dairies is onweerlegbare bewys hiervan. In beide gevalle is ‘n jeugdige dagboekskrywer aan die woord en die formaat skep per definisie intimiteit deur die daarstelling van ‘n driekantige vertrouensverhouding tussen die skrywer, die dagboek en die leser. Illustrasies vorm ‘n integrale deel van die tekste en dit sou nie ongegrond wees om beide reekse as grafiese romans te beskryf nie.

Katie Kirby se Lottie Brooks-reeks volg ‘n soortgelyke uitleg, maar die illustrasie-teks-verhouding fokus op die teks. Die illustrasies is ingesluit as addisionele vermaak, eerder as ‘n integrale deel van die romans. Die verteller verduidelik die rede agter die eenvoud van die lynsketse as volg: “Ons loop nie kaal rond nie. Dit vat net só lank om klere te teken, en ek het nie die krag daarvoor nie.” (7)

Lottie is elf-en-‘n driekwart jaar oud en aan die vooraand van haar hoërskoolloopbaan wanneer haar dagboek open op Woensdag, 11 Augustus. Sy ervaar sosiale angstigheid op verskeie vlakke: Haar beste vriendin en haar gesin het pas na Australië geëmigreer, haar jonger boetie is ‘n wandelende verleentheid, puberteit ontwyk haar, en sy besef dat iets so onbenullig soos die verkeerde keuse van ‘n pennesakkie van haar ‘n randfiguur kan maak: “Solank ek iemand het om pouses by te sit sodat ek nie my toebies in rekordtyd moet afsluk en dan in die toilette moet wegkruip totdat die skoolklok lui nie.” (19)

In haar eerste dagboek (11 Augustus tot 16 Januarie) moet Lottie die vreesaanjaende werklikheid van hoërskool navigeer sonder die bystand van haar beste vriendin, haar eerste bra-aankope trotseer, die nuus van haar ma se swangerskap hanteer en ‘n ontluikende eerste liefde ervaar. Humor staan sentraal in elke uitdaging en verlig die andersins gewigte onderwerpe: “Wel. ‘n mens gaan nie eintlik saam iewers heen nie... ‘n Mens sê maar net vir mekaar dat julle uitgaan en vertel vir ander jy het nou ‘n boyfriend of ‘n meisie, maar meestal ignoreer julle mekaar.” (134)

Haar tweede dagboek open op 21 Januarie en sluit af op 2 Mei, en hier val die fokus ongetwyfeld op verhoudings, insluitend beide vriendskappe en romantiese aantrekkingskrag, wat afspeel teen die agtergrond van klein jakkalsies soos jaloesie, manipulasie, groepsdruk en boeliegedrag: “En dan is daar ek – iewers in die middel, besig om die gaping te probeer oorbrug.” (180)

Die reeks het oorspronklik in Engels verskyn as The Extremely Embarrassing Life of Lottie Brooks (2021) en The Catastrophic Friendship Fails of Lottie Brooks (2022) en die Afrikaanse vertaling is meesterlik gedoen deur Zelda Bezuidenhout.

Kui ma avastasin Eesti Raamatu poolt saadetud pakist uue Lottie Brooksi, siis tahtsin lausa katuse pealt kiljuda. Ma ei ole suur lasteraamatute fänn, eriti selliste, mis on siuksed... lihtsad ja huumorile rõhuvad, aga Lottie Brooks võlus mind esimese raamatuga koheselt ja siin lähevad asjad veel paremaks.

Kas te kujutate ette - lasteraamat, mis räägib päevadest!
Kuidagi tundub olevat, et lasteraamatutes selle teema kajastamist peetakse liiga varaseks ja noortekate puhul mõttetuks, sest ah kõigil ammu teema selge (kuigi ka siis võiks seda elu osa ja selle erinevaid aspekte normaliseerida tillukeseski mahus). Päevad võtavad raamatus üsna suure rolli (kuigi muidugi on ka teisi suuri ja olulisi teemasid nagu sõprus, armumised, pere jne). Autor näitab nende eelnemisega seotud muresid ja rõõme, on informatiivne neile, kel see ees ja toetav neile, kellele teema tuttav. Normaliseeriv samas andes kasulikke nippe. Ja ausõna see ei ole üldse raamatus peamine teema, aga vot läks mulle nii hinge ja mul on hea meel, et lapsed saavad sel moel päevade teemaga tutvuda.

Aga muidu ikka fantastiliselt humoorikad Lottie seiklused nagu alati ja loodan, et tõlkimisele lähevad ka järgmised osad - see on koht, mis vajab eestikeelses lastekirjanduses suuremat täitmist.

jestem naprawdę pod wrażeniem. to naprawdę głupiutka seria, a jednocześnie daje mi tyle radości i uśmiechu, i w ogóle wszystkiego. i kibicuję lottie przemocno, żeby jej przyjaźnie trwały bardzo długo, aby wszystko szło po jej myśli, żeby miała z kim jeść kitkaty, a jednocześnie żeby nie musiała się nimi dzielić.

chociaż w tym tomie z rytmu wybijało mnie to zwracanie się do czytelników, kiedy w pierwszym tomie zwracała się do swojego notesu.

Niezmiennie - kocham Lottie! To jest tak świetna seria! I szczerze, jest tak naprawdę dla każdego. Bo generalnie dedykowana nastolatkom (A nawet na okładce widnieje wiek 9+), no ale kochani, mam 28 lat, a bawiłam się przednio xD

Jest to seria zabawna (ale nie tak głupio-śmieszna), ale jednocześnie taka prawdziwa, bez niepotrzebnego "krindżu" czy moralizatorstwa jak to czasem bywa w książkach dla nastolatków. Wydaje mi sie, ze właśnie mając te 11/12 lat, można się utożsamic z Lottie i uświadomić, że hej, to nie tylko ja, ale inni mają podobnie, to normalne.

nende Lottie-raamatute lugemiseks on vaja mingit erilist meeleseisundit ja ma seekord ei saanud seda tükk aega kätte - lugesin lehekülje või kaks ja pidin siis jälle raamatu käest panema, sest nii palju varateismeliste draamat ei ole keskealise inimese südamele ja veresoonkonnale hea. aga kui siis ühel hetkel klõps ära käis, lugesin hooga lõpuni ja polnudki nii hull, keegi ikkagi ei sure murtud südame kätte ja (spoiler) isegi hamster jääb ellu.

ikka uskumatult keeruline on see 12-aastaste sõbrannamajandus. oma teismeeast nagu ei mäletagi, et oleks nii hull olnud, aga eks ma olen osad asjad meelega ka ära unustanud.

Võtsin selle raamatu kätte täiesti juhuslikult, kui mu 10-aastane tütar selle raamatukogust endale lugemiseks tõi ja enam käest panna ei saanud - lugesin peaaegu ühe jutiga läbi ja nautisin täiega. Pole juba ammu ühtegi raamatut lugedes nii palju naernud. Kirjeldatud olukorrad, eriti Lottie kodune elu ja peresuhted, tulid nii tuttavad ette ja ma tundsin end korduvalt tema emas ära. Ma kujutan ette, et peamisele sihtrühmale ehk eelteismelistele tüdrukutele peaks see raamat küll väga meeldima, aga soovitan seda lugeda ka tänaste või tulevaste teismeliste vanematel ja vanavanematel. Ja loodan ise peagi ka Lottie Brooksi sarja esimest ning järgmisi osasid lugeda.
