The Sonic Archives series has emerged as one of Archie's best-selling trade paperbacks, as fans both new and old can relive the glory days of Sonic the Hedgehog in these high-quality, digitally-restored graphic novels, complete with all the classic Sonic stories from the 1990's! Now with Sonic Archives Volume 10, Sonic lovers can add to their collections issues #37-40, stories which are almost impossible to come across now. And best of all, the colors are completely re-mastered to give the issues a brand-new look!
And now back to another good volume! The stories here are quite good for the most part! Especially when Sonic get's roboticized and starts destroying everything! There is a follow up story where Sonic is court-martialed, and it's not great, especially with the art. Manak's art is perfect for all the ridiculous pun filled adventures, but feels more and more out of place as they try to tell actual stories with it. It's especially jarring when the previous issues are all drawn by Spaz who absolutely rocks.
Rough ending aside, this is an excellent volume. It's a shame you have to jump to Sonic Select in order to read the second half of the Mecha Madness storyline, but otherwise it's lots of fun. I'm really hoping there's more of this in the next couple volumes.
Issue 37 seems like it comes straight out of a SatAM cartoon. A Earthquake hits Robotropolis and the Freedom Fighters use this as an excuse to deroboticize a bunch of poor Mobians. I have no idea how this technology works at all. (Shrugs) There's a great Bunnie solo story about her fears over whether her mechanical parts will ever take over and put her friends in danger. Great pathos for a Sonic story!
The art in 38 is terrible and makes me sad. Sonic loses his speed because techno babble. And... rings bring it back? I dunno, PLOT! The art remains terrible.
This volume gets a star boost for having MECHA MADNESS. It's one of my favourite of the comic stories mostly because Spaz draws it. Sonic gets roboticized and most of the issue is a fight between him and Bunnie that is TOTALLY BADASS. The rest continues in a super special. The story is, again, nothing new, but the writers use it well! It's fun, the characters feel like their best selves, and SO COOL. (And sure, this is a Sonic the Traitor story exactly ten issues after a similar story... but I like them both!)
Issue 40 is... a disappointing follow-up. I admit there is reason to suspect that Sonic did disobey orders, but we go from awesome fight scenes by Spaz to silliness and art by Manak. It's a jarring transition. I dislike framing Antoine as inept because it's too easy and just not a good use of his character. Also, the set up of a court room sans investigation is frustrating. Sure, this is a comic for kid's, but needless antagonism is boring.
I think this book is perfect to understand how Metal Sonic was created cause it tell us when egg man created it and it’s all cause of the DNA that Eggman Found of sonic a piece of his hair and put it into Metal sonic so he can have the same speed as Sonic and ability so this is a good book to see about metal sonic
Mecha-Madness! That should be all I have to say to fans of the series! *heh* Sonic and Knuckles duke it out...and that always makes a "Sonic" comic storyline worth reading!
What to say about that? This is just classic, maybe also a must for someone who loves metal character in Sonic, like Metal Sonic and Metal Knuckles. Precious thing it is.
A theatrical tale as Sonic gets roboticized and is turned into Mecha-Sonic. Of course, the aftermath shows his friends as they claim he had betrayed the Freedom Fighters while he has to prove his innocence. A must-read now!
