The Girl in the Arcade Vol. 1

Rate this book
Boy meets girl at the arcade in this sexy, slapstick comedy!

At his job working in an arcade, “Mobuo” gets pretty much ignored by everyone–even his nickname references the way he blends into the background like some kind of NPC. All that changes when gorgeous, larger-than-life Yaegashi Nanora barges into the place and demands his help learning the ins and outs of the arcade’s trickiest games. And did she just ask him out?! One thing’s for sure, it’s the beginning of a summer full of arcade fun and simmering sexual tension!

Is this hentai?

What starts off as a silly panty shot galore manga of a girl going to the arcade turns into some weird fantasy gaming sexually assault Mario cart sessions. Like I legit didn't know what was happening half the time. Then a battle between the two new female leads for the attention of the normal boring main lead? What originality.

Yet I still read it. I was stunned at the turn of events sometimes. When they played Mario cart and the guy used the banana and the banana in Mario cart makes you spaz out of control but in this it landed on the girls vagina, causing her to suddenly burst with confusion. Then a tentacle monster started to gr--- YOU KNOW WHAT. You have to read it to believe it.

A what the fuck did I just read out of 5.

Panties!

Now, I normally start my reviews with a brief synopsis of the story. And this time was no different. I am always fascinated by the books that the starched shirts at Amazon refuse to carry in eBook format, which has lead to a couple of really good discoveries, actually. But you can’t win ‘em all.

On paper, this story is absolutely brilliant. Your usual wiener boy meets a straight-A all-rounder who’s hiding a secret side that LOVES arcade games. They hang out together, explore the ins and outs of the arcade and the many games within, then they get closer.

Except our female lead, Nanora, is essentially a sentient pair of panties with a human suit inside them. That’s the impression the art gives, anyway, as it shows them off at every turn, even in defiance of such things as perspective.

There is no planet where a school skirt is that short, none. And I get this is ecchi, but at least make an effort, geeze. Here she leans forward and it’s all on display. I know, I ask too much. They’re not even interesting panties, for heaven’s sake!

And the breasts? Sigh. Just sigh. The physics on those things are so crazy that Stephen Hawking wouldn’t be able to chart their trajectory, as they appear to move completely independent of one another. When Nanora uses them to pull off a fighting game move, it’s pretty much the worst.

It’s genuinely too bad because there are flashes of brilliance in amidst the really boring lewd nonsense. The arcade game explanations and strategy tips are really fun and the silly conceit of Nanora and weiner guy entering the games on a more literal level is cute, up until the point where she gets sexually assaulted by a Mario Kart clone, anyway.

I assure you this actually happens.

Who is this for? I genuinely don’t know, but I figure it must have an audience. But it’s not charming enough in its story, the ecchi is more crass than titillating, and if you want straight up smut manga, well, it exists.

It doesn’t help that it only has one interesting character for most of its page count and the story is basically just interested in ogling her. When the relationship angle starts to bubble up at the end, it feels incredibly awkward and unearned.

2 stars - it’s probably got fans, I suppose. In a world of the equally explicit but far more interesting 2.5 Dimensional Seduction and the far more explicit but better written Asumi-chan is Interested in Lesbian Brothels, to pick two manga I’ve liked in this vein, however? Well, I don’t think I’ll be inserting large piles of my quarters to continue.

In a lot of ways I felt like this was fan service the manga. There could’ve been a really actually interesting story here but they well overplayed their hand write away the intro to the childhood best friend halfway through was kind of stereotypical has been way over played the fan service I found to be way over the top and really unnecessary it got in the way of the story a lot and it was kind of creepy in a way all in all the art works not bad but this is definitely something I don’t see myself continuing reading I know there is a market out there for this but I am definitely not one of them

Very nice comfortable rom-com. Has hints of fantasy because of arcade games and the characters being imagined literally in the games. Art is good, at first I was a little turned off, but once I was seeing all the details and more of the character designs I was sold.
Wish there was even more straight up nudity but there is a taste to satisfy that itch.

This is a well drawn hentai-like manga about a young girl coming into an arcade and seeking assistance in gameplay from a part timer. A lot more nudity and explicit content than I assumed there’d be.
