Detective Rob Miller is at home with his crying newborn son when he gets the news. Retired Chief Superintendent Sam Lawrence, Rob’s friend and mentor, has been shot dead. Lawrence had always been his rock.
Rob is devastated. An hour ago Lawrence had called to ask him to meet, but Rob couldn’t go because he was on daddy duty.
Now he will hunt down the killer — but his boss thinks he’s too emotionally involved.
This time it’s personal, but it’s not the only murder Rob’s got on his plate.
The body of a young man is found on the south bank of the Thames near the London Eye with an unusual stamp on his wrist. Are the two killings related?
Then a suspect has their throat slashed in custody and another body bearing the same stamp turns up.
Rob knows this is not the work of some amateur criminal, but someone with terrifying reach — and the name they keep hearing is the Wolf.
His baby won’t sleep. His partner needs him. Can he be there for them and bring a killer to justice?
The South Bank Murders by Biba Pearce is a British police procedural that hits the ground running. It quickly begins with the murder of a retired Chief Superintendent and two others, all three shot as in an execution. It will be up to the detectives who formerly worked for him to get to the bottom of these horrific crimes. Soon, more murders come to light and it looks like someone who is well-connected is operating an organized crime syndicate. Biba Pearce is very skilled at creating thrillers and her writing style leads the reader to feel like a witness to the story. The characters are realistic and flawed . The plot creates an underlying tension throughout and the dread is pervasive. The subject matter is at times difficult as it deals with violence against children. The South Bank Murders is a solid, fast-moving thriller that left me wanting to read more mysteries by this author. If police procedurals are your favorite genre, be sure to take a peek at this book. Highly recommended. This is the fifth instalment of the Detective Rob Miller series but it reads well as a stand-alone. Thank you to Joffe Books, NetGalley and the author for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
When a close friend is shot and killed, Rob and the team go off-book in an attempt to hunt down the killer. The homicide pitches them against their most powerful adversary yet - one who will stop at nothing to see them fail.
What a great book this was. Rob's friend has been murdered but Rob and his team aren't allowed to investigate. A young man's body is washed up in a river. Rob and his team are given this case to solve, but they want to help solve the murder of their friend too. There's plenty going on n this book. Just the right amount so that you don't get lost in it. It's well written, the characters are well developed and believable. Although this book is part of a series, it could be read as a standalone.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #JoffeBooks and the author #BibaPearce for my ARC of #TheSouthBankMurders in exchange for an honest review.
Unfortunately this is a DNF for me at 60%. I tried, like 3 or 4 times, and I just couldn't get into it even though I've really enjoyed all of Biba Pearce's previous books. The only bonus is that I can now mark it off my "Putting Down For Now" Goals list.
Thank you to Netgalley and Joffee Publishing for the opportunity to read and review this book.
So this is book 5 in the series. Normally, I wouldn't start in the middle of a series, but I think I was OK in this case. I didn't feel lost at all. This story was really good. We follow a group of Detectives working a case of their former boss and everything in the sphere of this mystery. The story was engaging, the characters are relatable and likeable. It really was a page turner, and well worth the read.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author for this ARC.
I thought this book was a very enjoyable read and an excellent addition to a great series. I think the author has created a really likeable and believable character with her main character DCI Rob Miller and portrays him very realistically. The book started got off to a great start off with the DCI and his team investigating a number of murders where they know one of the victims. The author grabbed my attention from the first page and held it all the way through. I found this to be a very well written and engaging read, it was fast paced and just got better the more I read. I really like the authors writing style, loved all the separate story threads and felt the author really connected with me through her characters and writing. There were lots of twists which I loved and the last part of the book was brilliantly written where the author really upped the pace. The story raced to a thrilling end with all loose ends tied up. Overall a great read, one which I can’t fault and I look forward to the next book. I would recommend this if you like police procedurals and would say start with book 1 and read the books in order so you get to know DCI Miller and his history.
Thank you NetGalley and Joffe Books for the eARC. Detective Rob Miller and his partner Jo, suffer from sleepless nights thanks to their newborn son, when Rob catches an important case: the murder of his previous boss and mentor, Chief Inspector Lawrence. He's determined to catch the killer, sleep or no sleep. Then follow the killings of two young boys who were forced to work for a vicious gang, which deals drugs and traffics young girls and boys. The ending is excellent, the man everyone is terrified of, The Wolf, is finally caught and Rob can hopefully catch some z's!
Rob and his team were awesome in cracking the mystery to this story. Will and Mike were an awesome assets to Rob’s team. There are some heart pounding moments to the story, such Rob and his team going into the housing wards to search down Torch and how every turn could be your last. The writer was pretty good at providing the much needed details of explaining why Rob or Mike did this or that. I can say the the story played like a movie to me, basically the book has some realism to it. I found all the characters very interesting. Robs team has a good connection with one another. The entertainment and action was suspenseful and thrilling.
‘The South Bank Murders’ is the fifth instalment of a series, which features Detective Inspector Rob Miller. I read and loved the first four books in the series and so when I heard that Biba was due to release a fifth book, I knew that I had to read it as soon as I could get my hands on a copy. Well ladies and gents, I managed to get my hands on a copy and I thoroughly enjoyed every single minute of it, but more about that in a bit. I rather like the character of Detective Inspector Rob Miller. He is an experienced career police officer. He leads from the front and he doesn’t ask anybody to do anything that he wouldn’t be willing to do himself. Miller is settled with a partner and they have a baby together. Miller thinks that perhaps things moved quicker than he had intended but he seems happy with things the way they are. One of the murders featured in this book is personal to Miller as the victim is his former superior officer Chief Superintendent Sam Lawrence, who had retired from the force. He was both a friend and a colleague and Miller feels his loss deeply. Miller is determined that he will do everything he can to track down the killer. What happens? Well for the answer to that question and so much more you are just going to have to read the book for yourselves to find out as I am not going to tell you. As soon as I started reading, I immediately felt that I had reunited with old friends in the form of Miller and his team. I made the fatal mistake of starting to read the book shortly before I went to bed. Let’s just say that bedtime was delayed and I had a distinct ‘lack of sleep’ hangover the following morning but it was so worth it. This was one of those books that stayed with me whether I had the Kindle in my hand or not. If I wasn’t reading the book, then I was thinking about it. If I had to put the book to one side for any reason then I would immediately look forward to being able to pick the book up again. I became so wrapped up in the story that I lost all track of time and just how quickly I was getting through the story. All too quickly I reached the end of ‘The South Bank Murders’ and I had to say farewell to Miller and his team. I found ‘The South Bank Murders’ to be a gripping and tense read, which kept me guessing and which kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. ‘The South Bank Murders’ is extremely well written but then I have come to expect nothing else from Biba Pearce. She certainly knows how to grab the reader’s attention and draw them into what proves to be one hell of a story. For me the story hit the ground running and maintained a fairly fast pace throughout. Reading ‘The South Bank Murders’ felt a bit like being on an at times scary and unpredictable rollercoaster ride with several twists and turns along the way. I love the way in which Biba makes the reader feel as though they are part of the story and at the heart of the action. In short I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘The South Bank Murders’ and I would recommend it to other readers. I will certainly be reading more of Biba’s work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.
“What a fantastic nonstop full throttle compulsive read!” It all starts with a flourish with DCI Rob Miller learning the new life skills of having a baby, when his old boss Chief Superintendent Lawrence calls unexpectedly asking him for help and a for a meeting to which Rob is unavailable to help with. Next thing Rob gets a courtesy call knowing that Rob was close to his old boss and mentor advising him that there had been a shooting in Clapham with three fatalities one; being his old boss. Rob rushed to the crime scene getting in before everyone else and quickly assesses it is true with his old boss dead with two others all three being shot in a Thai restaurant. The three shot turn out to be the restraint owner, the second one turning out to be a known criminal and then his boss, all the three having been shot twice with all the signs of being a professional hit. Rob then takes matters into his own hands before having to let others take over the crime scene and investigation by illegally removing his boss’s mobile phone that could hold vital evidence but completely against all rules.
At first Rob and the MIT Team (Major Investigation Team) are declined to take on the murder case their own boss Mayhew as it is all too close to them, but they all decide to go behind their bosses back and to continue investigating Lawrence’s death themselves. So despite the case being investigated by someone else Rob plus his team anyway against orders putting his job and their career on the line.
However as events turn around Rob and his team do get the case back and as things unfold the investigation evidence points to certain suspects including a man called “Wolf” When new evidence and links to both drugs and human trafficking is involved the team has to inform and join forces with the “National Crime Agency” which also happens to be Jo, Rob’s partner’s old and unfriendly boss who along with detective Ridley joins together. The story has it all, being action packed, addictive, twists and turns, yet still being believable and all ends with an astonishing conclusion and a ending not seen coming that will hopefully lead into another addictive Rob Miller book in this great series. A top book and highly recommended.
British police procedural! Well paced contemporary British crime novel. It starts with a phone call to DCI Miller, sleep deprived proud new father that he is. His mentor retired Detective Chief Superintendent Sam Lawrence wants a meetup. Miller passes. The next phone call in the middle of the night is to report Sam’s death. The Putney Major Investigation team want the case but their new Super decides it’s to be handed over to another group. After a few false starts, Putney gets the case. Great, as they’d all been working on it anyway. Things get complicated when another murder case, that of a young boy, appears to cross into this investigation. In between the drug dealing, child trafficking and who knows what else the team have their hands full. The revealed truth was something I’d wondered about beforehand. There’s another seemingly uptight person I’m having thoughts about. I still wonder who the guy outside the mobile shop was—he didn’t fit the homeless pattern. Mmm! A quick read, fast and furious, with several moving parts that could’ve easily ramped out of control, but didn’t.
The entire series stays true to all that is involved with solving a series of crimes. Are they connected or does the team of detectives need to solve separate cases? DCI Rob Miller is a fully fleshed out character and a very likable guy. Glimpses of Rob as a new father add to his character. When his former mentor Superintendent Lawrence is gunned down the case resonates in a very personal way to Rob and the other detectives. Multiple threads come together in an exciting finish. Recommend this series.
Another excellent mystery in this terrific series!
Rob Miller and his partner are struggling through the early days with a new baby – and one who is not a particularly good sleeper at that – when he receives a phone call from his former boss asking to meet. As he is on daddy duty he can’t make it, so when he gets another call to say that former Chief Superintendent Lawrence has been shot dead. Despite already having another murder case on his hands, Rob and his team fight to get charge of Lawrence’s murder; he was, after all, ‘theirs’. With a sleep deprived partner, a fractious baby and two cases on his hands, how will Rob manage to be everything he needs to be?
Having read the previous novel in this series, I was delighted to get the chance to read and review this one and I wasn’t disappointed. I have no idea of the writing process this author uses, but it works! A clearly set out story with no stones left unturned and a very satisfactory ending. I rather like Rob Miller; he’s committed to his family and to his job and he makes it all work. A thoroughly good read and one I really enjoyed and am happy to give all five stars.
This is a wonderful addition to this thrilling series! Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and action with wonderful world building that adds so much to the story. Such a thrilling read that I couldn't put it down. Can't wait to read more of these. Recommend reading.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
This is the 5th book in the series involving DCI Rob Miller and his team working in Homicide and Serious Crime Command in Putney. One evening he gets a call from his retired boss and friend for help but is stuck at home nursing his new baby son. He later receives a call from the duty officer that his former boss has been shot dead in a Thai restaurant. Rob rushes to the crime scene disbelieving it could be him. I immediately liked the character of the DCI. Gentle at home with his family. Liked and respected by his team and was uncompromising in his job. He is determined to take over the case but his bosses see it differently.
The action picks up when a body of a young man is discovered in the mud of the Thames and Rob and his team is allocated the investigation. Going against orders they continue to investigate the murder of the ex-Chief Superintendent in secret.
There is plenty of fast-paced action and it carries the story along well. The bodies continue to mount up and the pace ramps up quickly.
I thought it a thoroughly enjoyable read with believable characters. It's well written and I read it as a stand-alone story without knowledge of the previous four books in the series. It was un-put-downable and I will certainly add the author to my must-read list.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #JoffeBooks for my ARC of #TheSouthBankMurders in exchange for an honest review.
DCI Rob Miller is back with a bang and about take on possibly the most significant case of his life certainly the most personal. When he's called to a crime scene in the early hours leaving his exhausted girlfriend Jo and four-month-old son Jack at home.
But when his boss Superintendent Mayhew arrives and orders him and his team off the case. Rob rebels, and takes a risk he would never ordinarily take. As he has to know what happened and is determined to find this killer no matter the cost.
However, this case and Robs workload soon become much more complicated. When a teenager is found on the south bank beaten and shot to death. And as the team dig. They find themselves immersed in the murky world of OCGs, human trafficking and drug running.
And with fantastic pacing, big twists and a killer you will not expect. This was a story I could not put down! And it's one I would 100% recommend to all.
that can't be the end of the series 😭😭i didn't want it to be over. i really hope a 6th book is announced! with that ending, there definitely could be more.
This newest instalment in DCI Rob Miller’s murder mysteries was excellent, there was a great crossover of cases that kept you guessing who was going to be the leader of the crimes.....Ive read all 5 books in this series and they have evolved to a great series, each book getting a bit more in-depth and I find myself power reading through them. I’m very hopeful we will see a new book in the series and find where Rob and Jo’s life continues along with all the quirky characters from the police precinct. This last book leaves us with some questions and wonders who else might be out to harness Rob or others in his life.
I received a free copy from NetGalley and all opinions are my own. I would recommend this and the entire series to my friends and book club
This is Detective Rob Miller #5 but can easily be read as a standalone.
Biba Pearce has very quickly become one of my favourite authors and I wait in anticipation for each new book!
DCI Rob Miller’s recently retired boss, DCS Sam Lawrence, is shot in a restaurant along with two other people. After the initial shock at losing a great friend and mentor, Rob is determined to find out who is responsible. His current boss doesn’t want him to handle the case as he and his team are too close to the victim but, while they’re waiting to find out if they can take the case, the body of a young boy washes up in the river. The team starts investigating and then discover both a connection between the two deaths, and another body.
There is just enough personal information for the reader to get to know the characters without detracting from the storyline. The characters and the events are totally believable. I honestly stayed awake until 3am to finish this as I just couldn’t put it down, having been hooked right from the first few pages.
Thank you to NetGalley and Joffe Books for an advance reader copy in return for an honest review.
Thank you so much NetGalley for the opportunity to read this Biba Pearce book. I thoroughly enjoyed it and read it in under 24 hours.
This is the first Biba Pearce book that I have read, although I do have some on my TBR pile.
This is an exciting, twisty book about Police Officer Rob Miller. The South Bank Murders had me gripped from the first page. Millers old boss, has been brutally shot and Miller and his team are on a mission to find out who did this. However as with all good books, there are more murders, that don't tie in straight away but then have a habit of being part of the bigger case.
I would definitely love to read more about Rob Miller, so I will definitely be picking up another Biba Pearce book!!
What a talent another fantastic edition in the Detective Rob Miller series which is quickly becoming one of my favourites was hooked from the first page.
I find it easy to connect with Biba's writing style she has the right balance in her stories in terms of the plot, investigation/procedure, personal/professional relationships it just all slots together nicely to create a masterpiece you can't help but be immersed in her world.
The south bank murders is a thrilling read which fully deserves five stars!
The South Bank Murders by Biba Pearce is book 5 in the series. It might help to read the previous books to get to know the characters, but I did not feel I missed too much by not reading the ones before The South Bank Murders. The plot was good. The action at the end wraps up a bit too quickly, and not all the story is resolved. I guess that might come out in the next series installment. The story does have action-packed scenes and kept me interested throughout the story in this police procedural.
Wow! A stunning read that very much kept the pages turning. Rob Miller is enjoying a family evening when he receives the devastating news that his old boss and close friend has been killed. He speeds to the scene only to be told that his team are too close to this and they are not to investigate it. Then a young man’s body is found washed up in the river. He has a strange stamp on his hand, similar to one you would get at a nightclub. Could this help identify who he is and what has happened to him? Robs team fight to investigate the murder of their colleage at the same time as investigating the young man’s death. The one thing they keep coming back to is someone with a wolf tattoo. Is this person responsible for the chief’s death and how does this link to the immegrant murders? This is part of a series but happily stands alone (but why miss out on the others?). A fast paced read with lots going on and I found myself reading that “ just one more chapter”. I liked Rob and his tenacity and determination. A good team of characters with a little background and appropriate humour. A wonderful, very entertaining read and I very much look forward to the next in the series.
THE SOUTH BANK MURDERS kicks off with a horrific incident followed days later by a tragic gruesome discovery. Turmoil escalates with the turn of every page. Each riveting chapter is spell-binding as a flash point approaches. Heart-stopping suspense explodes in an action packed race against time finishing in a dynamite conclusion you'll never see coming.
THE SOUTH BANK MURDERS IS A ONE SITTING MUST READ!
DCI Rob Miller is developing nicely through this series and settling into life as a family man however when he gets news that his ex boss has been murdered along with another 2 men, everything is put on hold until he can find out who has done this. The investigation is not helped when his team find out that there is a mole within the force. Good paced story with plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing. My only issue is that mobiles are referred to as cell phones which isn't common language in the UK! Thanks to Joffe Books for the ARC to review.
DCI Rob once again is faced with cases to solve with the help of his team. When a close friend of Rob is murdered, he wants to find the person who did it. The plot and series are excellent, bringing the reader alone to find the clues. Given ARC by Net Halley and Joffe for my voluntary review and my honest opinion
Although this book is the fifth in the series, it’s quite easy to read it as a standalone. The characters are likeable, and it’s a good read, full of twists and turns and an excellent ending.
Rob is informed that his retired boss, friend and mentor has been shot, but by whom, and what was he doing at that time of night out on a secretive meeting with a CHIS?
The whole team are shocked, but because of who is was have to fight to keep the case and find out who shot him.
There are further deaths, and Rob and his team must seek the person at the top who is one step ahead and known as “the Wolf”, everyone is keeping quiet, fearing for their lives. Will he be found before more people die?
A good thriller, most enjoyable, although I did know who it was!!!
My thanks to the author and Joffe publishers for the ARC.
An enjoyable story with some very credible characters. Living in Kent we get a lot of information on refugees coming into the country via the channel and seeing the children on there own is heartbreaking. How did a killer know where a retired police superintendent was going to be in order to kill him and others there too? That's Rob's first problem, but there are more to come, affecting his home life too.
Loved it.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher, Joffe Books, I read a free advance review copy of the book. This review is voluntary, honest and my own opinion.
DCI Rob Miller is called out to a crime scene. The shooting of three males, unfortunately one is that of an old friend. Miller and his team are determined to investigate the case but who would want him dead. But soon the case gets complicated . An interesting and well-written modern crime story. Another good addition to this series with its cast of varied and likeable characters. Which can easily be read as a standalone story. An ARC was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
