The Montgomerys #1

Bad Situation

Rate this book
A group of women walk into a bar…

Sounds like the start of a crude joke, right? Yeah, well, the joke's on me because I'm investigating the gorgeous one in the heels with the great body. Jensen Montgomery.

Now I'm treading that area between right and wrong, good and bad, where sin and honor meld to become gray. Not that I haven't been here before. Hell, I’ve made my career in the gray. I never hesitate going to battle when my gut tells me I'm right. And right now, my gut—among other things—is speaking loud and clear about Jen Montgomery.

She’s in a bad situation. Not just bad—deep and black and ugly.

And I’m about to make it worse. She just doesn’t know it yet.

Warning: This author is also a mom who runs a PG-13 home. This book is not PG-13. If you are under the age of 18, do NOT pick up this book. This author doesn’t enjoy mama-drama of any sorts. Do her a favor and walk away.

Bad Situation is book one in the brand new series, The Montgomerys, by Brynne Asher. Holy Wow! What a book! I couldn’t put it down! Although it is definitely not required, I read Athica Lane and Paths before this so I had been introduced to the Montgomerys and briefly met Eli in Paths. So I knew a bit of the history. But, as I said, it is definitely not required because no matter what, you will love this book.

Jensen (Jen) Montgomery is thirty years old and soon will be taking over as CFO of her father’s company, Montgomery Industries. As soon as her father decides to step down and retire that is. Jen’s life is pretty much her work. She doesn’t have time for a personal life. But on a night when her friends from college dragged her out to a bar, something she never does, all it took was one touch from a man she briefly interacted with, and her world was turned upside down.

hand on her butt

Elijah (Eli) Pettit is thirty four years old. He has spent the past several years deep under cover and he managed to take down one of the biggest crime families in history. But with his cover blown, he’s been sent to Dallas to work white collar crimes with the FBI. His co-worker, Bree, is gung ho on making a name for herself by investigating and taking down Jen Montgomery. Eli is on surveillance of her at the bar when he’s forced to intervene when an over zealous man comes on to her. All it took was one touch. He suddenly found himself treading that fine line between back and white, between right and wrong, that gray area he was forced to reside in so many times when he was under cover.

Jen’s world is suddenly thrown into a tail spin when she finds out she’s being investigated. But even more than that, when the FBI show up, one of their agents is the very same man that she met the night before in the bar. A man she felt a connection with. A man she hasn’t been able to forget.

Eli trusts his instincts, his gut. And his gut tells him that Jen is innocent. That she’s being framed. But who? And why is his co-worker so bent on taking her down?

simple

Eli and Jen find themselves thrown into a very stressful situation, a situation where she is the accused, the target, and he is the investigator. But Eli knows she is innocent. And neither can deny the chemistry between them. So Eli swims in that gray area and does his best to protect Jen and to give them a chance to explore their feelings. He becomes her secret special agent. All Jen wants is a simple life. Maybe even to have that simple life with Eli. But with everything that has been thrown at her in the last couple of weeks, that possibility is looking less and less likely.

I want to stop there because I think that pretty well sets things up. Eli was amazing. He was sexy as heck and made me feel ALL the butterflies. He was an alpha, jealous, possessive, sexy hero that I completely fell in love with. And Jen, oh my gosh. This lady is tough but also soft and sweet. She had so much on her shoulders and I loved the way she was willing to lean just a little bit on Eli. That she did trust him, even though she knew she shouldn’t. The connection between these two was amazing.

his hands on her butt

This book pretty much had everything! It was hot and steamy, sweet and swoony, and tense and suspenseful. I absolutely could not stop reading. Brynne Asher has become such a favorite author of mine. I’ve read four of her books now and loved every single one. I can’t wait for the next book in this series. It will focus on Jen’s sister, Ellie.

Eli is a rare find for me. If I could write exactly how I want my hero to pursue his heroine, it's Eli 100%. There wasn't one moment where I felt he could do something different. There really isn't a better compliment I can give an author except to tell them they nailed it.

Eli had some roadblocks in his way when it came to Jen but he never let that slow him down. I think he is going to be universally liked by all types. He wasn't over the top, but he also didn't let anything stand in his way. He's the perfect blend of being a dominant, a protector and a gentlemen.

Jen was such a strong character. Sometimes a strong woman can come off as too much or too aggressive. I never felt that way with Jen. She was in charge and in a very dominant position at work but never came off as masculine. She still had a soft side to her and was pure woman at heart.

I talk about how I loved Eli's pursuit. Well, I can also say I loved how Jen reacted to his pursuit. With as dominant as she has to be in her work life, she wasn't that way with Eli. They complimented each other splendidly.

I always love catching up with past characters in the series and you get to see a few favorites pop in. The suspense was exciting and while I thought I knew what was going to happen, I really didn't. I love it when an author can surprise me. This will be a book I recommend to everyone I can. I loved it and will re-read this one for many reason.

“You’ve knocked me on my ass and I’m happy to stay there if it means you’re in my life for good.”

I enjoyed this story from beginning to end and couldn't put it down. A combination of passion, love and intense chemistry with the perfect amount of drama and suspense to keep you ensnared with the story. Brynne Asher is a marvelous storyteller and once again she has blown me away with such wonderful lovable characters. Jen and Eli are two strong, badass characters that you can't help but want more of. These two were just amazing together. My curiosity is piqued and I'm really looking forward to the next book in this series. Overall rating: 4.5 stars!

Audiobook: Narrators - Stephen Dexter & Lidia Dornet

I love doing a reread via audiobooks. I already loved this book, but hearing it come to live through the talent of these narrators was freaking amazing! They both did a wonderful job of the characters and both did well doing male/female voices which is where I struggle some of the time. Not so here. So glad I got this on audio!

Holy heck! Talk about your romantic thrillers! This is definitely one to check out!

Jensen and Eli will for sure be going onto my favorite heroine/hero list. I absolutely loved everything about them. Jen is fierce and independent with a bit of sass but man oh man, she’s got trouble up the wazoo. Talk about a bad situation. This is that into infinity. Eli might be the man to help her out of her troubles but he’s also carrying a boatload of his own so there’s no telling where all the crazy that’s going on around them will end.

description

I adored the fact that Eli was so completely dedicated to helping Jensen from pretty much the first moment they met. He’s in a precarious position himself but as someone who is quite comfortable with life’s gray areas, it’s something he may just be able to make work. If his protective instincts towards Jen wasn’t enough for me to love him, then his possessive jealousy pushed me right over and made me giddy at finding a new perfect hero.

description

This book starts out pretty fast and it never slows down. I couldn’t get enough of this story and found myself consuming each page voraciously, never skimming or even wanting to skim. There is no repetition and the writing is fresh and crisp with a hint of humor to balance out the drama. The steam is off the charts and by the time this couple fully consummate their relationship I’m sure my Kindle was in danger of a complete melt down. Secondary characters are freaking amazing without taking over the story and I’m now that fan that is never satisfied with the last book…I need the next one NOW!

I’m definitely recommending this to any and everyone who loves their romances with some suspense, a bit of a twist, plenty of steam, and a hero and heroine who will steal your heart.

"For a bad situation, you're pretty fucking perfect."

Bad Situation kicks off Brynne Asher's new series, The Montgomerys, and brings us to the story of Jen Montgomery and Eli Pettit. Both have been featured in previous books from this author but now we get to dig deeper into their characters.

The relationship between Eli and Jen was an exhilarating and crazy ride between two very strong characters and I enjoyed every moment of it. I adored them both and was cheering them on to get an HEA they deserved, What I thought was the best about them is that neither of them lost the strength that they had in the beginning. Eli was definitely a swoon worthy alpha hero but the moments that had me loving him the most were when he just sat back and let Jen handle herself. He wasn't intimidated at all that she was a badass business woman and I loved that. He still did anything in his power to protect her though which was just as amazing to see.

As for Jen, she was just as brilliant of a character. She didn't back down or stop fighting when things got tough and I admired that about her. She had a soft side when it came to Eli but it didn't overshadow how badass she truly was.

Overall, I thought this was a great start to this series and it has me dying to get my hands on the next book. These characters do show up in other series, and there are some past characters from Ms. Asher but it can be read as a complete standalone with no confusion.

holy shit! this is my shit. for some reason, Eli & Jen reminded me of Maxim & Lennix from Kennedy Ryans All the King’s Men duet. i got the vibes like theyre a power alpha couple. idk Jen is a business woman, and she just seemed so capable and independent. maybe a little weary and haggard and delicate? but also strong and alpha-like? i loved her.

this book had the plot where the H was investigating the h. but instead of pitting the two of them against each other, and having the romance developed from lies and distrust, i loved that they were teaming up together to catch the real bad guy who framed the h and fell in love in the process. there was no unnecessary drama where the h felt betrayed had the H been hiding his identity and true motives. yknow like what typically happens in books with this kind of plot.

thats why i loved a H like Eli. he followed his guts and didnt just abide orders blindly. he saw something he wanted and went after it. i liked the way he went about doing it too - a little reckless, but still cautious, smart, and responsible. ah i just loved this book! and the epilogue (especially the news article feature, like theyre some celebs) was perfection.

Eh, this book was OK. There wasn't anything wrong with it per se, but I found it a bit boring. It needed a little more relationship angst, everything was just too easy peasy. Especially since there were ample situations were a bit of angst could have been injected and it would have really given the book a bit more...I don't know...something. Without it I found this couple to be a bit on the dull side. I suspect the next book may be Ellie and Trigg, they seem to have some bad history, so I'll keep my fingers crossed that their story is a little more exciting.

I'm a HUGE fan of power couples. And Jen and Eli were fantastic together. Also Jen was an amazing heroine. Strong, tough, and bad-ass in her high heels.

Also I adore it when couples have utter faith in each other, even better if there are no nasty and annoying misunderstandings between them. Through thick and thin, good and bad days - Jen and Eli had each other's backs.

Jen and Eli made it work from the beginning.

I loved their chemistry and how well they understood each other - and it's such a turn on when MCs know what they want. Jen and Eli weren't afraid of taking what they wanted and needed from each other, they had each other's backs and supported the other in every which way. And they were 100% confident in doing so. LOVED IT!!!!

This was a very good book!!!!! I knew I liked the author's writing ever since I feel in love with Gifts which is still my favorite. But if you love a romance with a strong and feisty couple you need to read this book!!!

Bad Situation is not a bad story. I do like the humor between the characters. The chemistry is hot and sexy. The suspense and detective plot is a nice bonus.

I just do hope the story can be shortened a bit. I have to admit I am bored a bit in the middle.

Overall Miss Asher done a good job with Bad Situation. An OK read for me.

5 ‘The BEST of Situations’ Stars

Oh… My…. Heart… Bad Situation was so emotionally raw, incredibly sexy and completely and utterly gripping, it instantly went to my favorites reads of 2018! Jen and Eli will definitely have a permanent spot in my booklover’s heart! Bad Situation was the PERFECT kind of Situation, I’d say… Sigh…

Coming as sort of crossover between Ms. Asher’s already amazing series, Carpinos and Killers, I couldn’t be happier in getting Jen and Eli’s story! For those of you, fangirls like yours truly, Jen is sister to Athica Lane’s Cam and Eli had a small – but relevant – appearance on Paths. So I was already intrigued by them as characters on their own, but these two together?! Oh boy, I was not ready for this level of chemistry!

Catching his dark eyes, they clash with mine and hold tight. Not uttering a word, it’s like his gaze is trying to communicate with me. If I only spoke dark, sexy eye-language.

Damn the erotic, misleading FBI agent.

From the very first look, first touch, the chemistry between them was SCORCHING! And that first meeting would mean so much more, specially when the true reasons behind the encounter are unveiled and Elijah’s FBI role comes forward and in how much it is connected to Jen! A Bad and complicated Situation indeed…

I’m the king of pushing boundaries and can walk the line of good and evil while always working for the good.

“When I see something I want, I take it.”

A tricky situation, and with potential to blow up in their faces, but nothing or no one is going to prevent Eli from taking what – or better yet, WHO – he wants: Jenson Montgomery. This man… Alpha with a capital A, I tell you! From that very first instant he’s captivated like never before and knows he NEEDS Jen, and she needs him just as much. Now he just had to convince the tough and strong willed businesswoman of all that, LOL.

This man, I trust him with my body. It’s my heart I’m not so sure about yet.

And here is lies a HUGE factor for the awesomeness that is Bad Situation, because not only does Eli not give up on his quest, but this kind of push and pull – added to deliciously and mature banter – just adds to the most scorchingly HOT build up, not only emotional slow burn, but sizzling hot foreplay and sexy times. And don’t get me started on the real sexy times… NSFW warning level of HOTNESS!

“Oh, fuck.”

“Not now, but definitely later when I can take my time with you.”

Elijah Petit, for a man of not many words, sure knew how to enchant us – and Jen, lol – with not only the most caring of actions, but some swoon worthy moments. Like I said, ALL the Alphaness: protective, possessive and passionate, and to top it of, there was no doubt that Jen came first, no matter the consequences. Swoon….

“I’m saying that I’ve never been more grateful that my instincts are on point. Because I might’ve wanted you the first time I saw you, but right now? Baby, you throw all that other shit that should be standing between us out the window and the difference now is that I don’t see myself ever wanting anyone else.”

And Jen… Brynne Asher really outdid herself with this female character! Not many times we get to read in romance about female main characters in such high power roles, but sadly even less with such realism, and veracity to the character. Yes, Jen was beyond strong in all matters, but her hidden fragility, insecure moments, and unwavering femininity and strength completely won me over. She and her emotions were so incredibly real that I found myself crying – with is very rare for this blackhearted reader ;) – more than once LIVING her feeling along with her. That’s jus how EXTRAORDINARY this book was!

“We’re might not be suited and started out in the worst situation ever, but I can’t get you out of my head, baby.”

“I have no business being with you, but here I am, breaking every rule—both written and unwritten.”

Brynne Asher really knocked it out of the park with Bad Situations. As always the slow burn, the instant attraction and the incredibly creating world building talent were there, yet the outstandingly complex and real feeling characters always give it a brand new touch and remind me once again why the author is standing feature auto-read/all-time-fav list. You can not read these books and not fall in love right along with them. They hook you from the very start and you became addicted, and therefore, craving more and more. Exactly like here, Bad Situation gave us an amazing ending for Jen and Eli, but here I am already desperate for the next book, specially with those teasing bombs along the way! I need ALL the Montgomerys books STAT!!! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

This is what it looks like for two people to need each other with a desperation so deep, it hurts.

“How did I get you out of such a fucked-up situation?”

Love this book!

Re-Read: 5 Stars
Still love this book!! One of my favorite role-reversal books for sure.

1st Read: 5 Stars
I absoloutely loved this book! Romance with suspense and action and sexiness! I loved the MCs individually and together, they're ultimate #couplegoals. I did have a couple things that almost made this into a 4.5 star; which was the predictable ending (all of my predictions were right), and this being an interconnected series with multiple books which was annoying, but in the end, this book was too good to bump it down. Will be reading more in this series and the author.

Safety (Spoilers)

5 Shining Stars!

Jenson “Jen” Montgomery is Heir apparent take over the family oil empire. She’s the only one of her siblings who has any interest in following in their father’s footsteps. Yet, at times she definitely feels the pressure and admits to just a teeny bit of envy for her siblings and their independent lives. Jen is strong, tenacious, and fiercely independent woman who only occasionally lets her guard down to show a more vulnerable side. Jen doesn’t trust easily so you instinctively know it would take someone just as tenacious for her to be able to show that side and let that vulnerability show.

Elijah Pettit is FBI Agent who had a huge role in taking down a well known mob organization, because of his notoriety he ends up in Dallas as a field agent. Jen is now his new assignment. From the moment they meet, things become complicated. I loved that Eli wasn’t willing to give up Jen. I loved his faith in her. I loved that he was willing to risk it all to protect her and he never doubted her integrity or loyalty.

I’m beyond excited that Brynne Asher is writing a new series. I can’t wait for the next book!!!

This book bored me out of my mind. How do you make an FBI agent boring? Make him a CPA who investigates wire fraud. 😑
The intrigue in this plot was insider trading and I don’t need to finish to know who was framing the heroine. There is so much time spent on what kind of designer shoes the FMC wears but NO time spent developing the spark between these two. Soooooo booooooooring. My mind is numb. 🧠 I’m out.

There’s lots of reviews for this book so I’ll keep mine short.

Eli is an absolutely fabulous character and I also really liked Jen. She’s a strong attractive intelligent female.

I had it all figured out very early on or rather I thought I did. Actually while the villain is obvious there’s a couple of curve balls thrown in there as well to keep it interesting.

This is an addictive read and I’m looking forward to the next one when it come out.

Sometimes Bad Situations turn into HEA’s…

I didn’t meet the love of my life in a bar/nightclub but if my memory serves me right, I remember wishing that the love of my life found me and swept me off my feet. The reality…I drank too much, probably danced like an Oompa Loompa on crack (without the orange skin tone…I think), and most of the blokes I met had one thing on their mind. My sister found the love of her life on the dance floor, so it can happen. Sometimes, even a Bad Situation on the dance floor could change your whole world.

There’s a list of Brynne Asher’s stories I wish I had re-read before starting Bad Situation. Of course, I know this NOW. But, I kind of went in not knowing much about who I would meet or re-meet, and what I would be getting. It’s great to go in blind but considering my shocking memory, it would have been nice to have a few of the characters fresher in my mind. Saying that, I love Brynne’s work and I should make more time for re-reads anyways. Ooh, and I’m not saying you have to read Brynne’s other work to enjoy Bad Situation BUT if you haven’t read Brynne yet…what the heck are you waiting for?????

So, Bad Situation starts off with a shake and shimmy that goes a little bad. The shake and shimmy were never meant to happen. A little too late, Jen is realising drunken shenanigans are not what they used to be. Jen’s work is her priority and the alcohol is not going to help get the work done. Eli is supposed to be doing his job. Obviously, Jen doesn’t know she’s the job and only sees the hot and serious guy who steps in when a bloke gets a little handsy with Jen. What follows is a connection that neither realised would change their Bad Situation into a nightmare.

I really enjoyed this story and was sucked into Jen and Eli’s love story from the very first page. I don’t have a lot in common with Jen, seeing as she’s a multi-millionaire big boss who’s work is her top priority. There are times that I can see past the dollars to a woman just like me. She has her doubts and insecurities, is looking for her happy place, and has a strong loyalty to her family. I could see that Eli struggled with Jen’s money, not because he wants to be better than her, just that he thinks they’re too different. It takes time, and a few hiccups for them both to realise that love can conquer all.

I would say that the suspense was on equal par with the romance in this one. It’s there from the start and is constantly in the back of your mind. Who has it in for Jen that they would ruin her whole world? Would the grey area that Eli must step into to see Jen out of trouble mean the end of his career with the FBI? I admit, I guessed the baddy from the beginning but I was completely bamboozled by the accomplice, to be honest. I would have liked to see them suffer, in a “behind bars” kind of way, a wee bit more.

Family plays a huge part in Bad Situation, dealing with the good and bad parts. I love knowing that all loving families have good and bad parts. It makes the dramas (both my sisters are drama teachers…poor me) I’ve lived through not seem so bad after all.

I really enjoyed this fast-paced, very sexy and exciting story. Brynne Asher has again treated us to a hero that is swoon-worthy, affectionate and very bossy. Our heroine is someone to admire and I loved to think that there are women out there on the same path. This is the first book in the series and I’m very excited for more.

Yup, not going to continue with this torture anymore. The insta-lust, bulldozing MMC, and weak FMC aren't doing it for me. 🤧

Jen (great, we share the same nickname, ugh) was meant to be intelligent and the next in line to take over her family's company. She's the current CFO and has repeatedly shown those who doubt her that she rightfully holds that position, and not just because of nepotism.

And yet, all that smarts didn’t even come into play the moment Eli entered her orbit. Nuh-uh, she turned into this ridiculous, horny hot mess whenever he's nearby. 🥴😑 She couldn't even stand up to his pushy ass and just let him bulldoze his way into her life. Like, seriously, I thought she was supposed to be badass?? Where's all that sass and cleverness gone? 🤦‍♀️

As for Eli, all I know is that if this kind of guy ever approaches me and thinks he can just barge into my life without me putting up a fight, he's got another thing coming. 😡

I don't understand why his brazen and overbearing attitude irritates me so much. Every time he does something he wants without even thinking about Jen's feelings, all I want to do is get inside the book and smash that cocky face of his. 😤 He really got on my nerves, and honestly, he's not even that attractive (the way I imagined him). Ugh! 🙄

I'm really disappointed that this didn't work out for me. I was actually intrigued to read this since the blurb caught my interest. But then the MCs acted like this, and well, all that interest just faded away.

Since I’m a huge fan of this author’s writing style, to say I’ve greatly been anticipating this new release would be an understatement, folks. I’d describe my enthusiasm more like jumping up and down chanting, “Give me...Give me...Give me!” lol

Jensen Montgomery may have found herself in a bad situation, but, ultimately, she was one mega PowerBall winning lottery ticket like lucky lady to land Eli as her leading man/apha protective hero. There basically wasn’t anything I didn’t love about this guy. “My, oh my”, Eli is the whole package. Handsome, smart, sexy, and willing to not just bend but break any rules necessary to help his lady love. He should take a bow, hold his head high, and wave to the crowd like royalty, because he just made my rare, exclusive “Top 10” book boyfriend list.

Though the pace of the storyline started to slow down, there were enough occasional twists and turns to keep things moving and interesting. I basically consider this a slow burn mystery “who done it” type romantic read. I did start to grow a little impatient to see the culprits revealed, but I certainly enjoyed every single second of Jen and Eli’s time together as they fought off what felt like an invisible adversary, who was always two steps ahead of them. Some of that time, btw, is “VERY” graphically steamy/smexy complete with lusty language. So if the sexy looking cover wasn’t a big enough hint, well, you’ve just been warned point blank this is 18 and over adult reading material.

There is a good cast of supporting sub-characters that added to the Montgomery clan, who though "rich as Croesus" obviously still have some lingering, long overdue family issues they need to hammer out once and for all. If you pay close enough attention, I suspect you likely will pick up on who the future destined to be together main couple will be in the next sequel, which I hope happens sooner rather than later, my fellow romance book loving friends.

Title: Bad Situation, Series: The Montgomerys (Book 1), Author: Brynne Asher, Pages: 323, stand-alone but part of a series, alpha protective good guy hero, business savvy/top executive type heroine, enemies to lovers, has her back, some violence, VERY graphic steamy/smexy scenes with lusty language, instant attraction, genuine emotional connection, romance safe, no OW/OM drama, no cheating, no love triangle, ends with epilogues.

Rating: 4 stars (lowered it one star for the slower pace that gradually kicked in and the becoming a tad too frequent, overly descriptive sex scenes started to feel repetitive).

(I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I was not given any payment or compensation for this review, nor is there any affiliation or relationship between this reviewer and the author/publisher.)

**4.7/5 stars**

I have sooo many good things to say about this book! But first, let's start with some info about The Montgomerys series; it seems to be a spinoff/side to the The Carpino series, which definitely has to be read before, if you care about order. And maybe some books from The Killers series. A few characters from The Carpino books make their appearance in Bad Situation, they are already married with their significant others, with on-going pregnancies, job opportunities, etc. If you want to know more about their background beforehand, definitely read The Carpino books first but if you are like me, and wish to read Bad Situation as a standalone without reading the other books, you won't feel lost doing so.

What I loved about Bad Situation was the main characters. Both of them were so enjoyable to follow in the story.

“I’m well on my way to getting fucked one way or another as it is—legally and literally.”
-Jensen

Jensen was so strong and down to earth. She didn't take sh*t from anyone, and her being CFO of her dad's company really showed. She was groomed into being the next CEO by her father, and she definitely put the work to become it. Some of the things she said or thought were super funny, and I also loved how she didn't give in too easily when it came to Eli (Don't worry, I'll get to him shortly). I don't think there is one single thing that I disliked about Jensen. It's rare but so refreshing when I come across a heroine that is so likeable. Even under the pressure of being investigated by the FBI, being framed and targeted, she didn't lose her cool. All her reactions were normal to have, no over the top dramatic crying or reckless actions that makes you roll your eyes. She was level headed and it was believable that she would become the next CEO of MI.

“I might as well wrap myself up in a human-sized condom, avoid all outside threats, and let the bulletproof latex do its job.”
-Jensen

Girl, that made me snort😂

And now Eli. I'll straight up say it, he is book boyfriend material. NO even better, he is the definition of a book boyfriend. In my mental dictionnary, when you look at the meaning of the word, it just says Elijah Pettit. This man was so perfect in everything he did. He did everything right! He was everything a girl could wish for and so much more. He was protective, possessive and jealous but not in a toxic way, he was cute, funny, broody somewhat grumpy, hot, commanding, interested, respectful...He was fearless and cool and...I could go on with the adjectives but you get the picture. What I loved was how set on Jensen he was. As a white collar FBI agent, romancing a federal target like Jensen was really problematic but he absolutely didn't give a sh*t. He believed she was innocent, that she was being framed, and he helped her in the shadows and then later on, not even hiding from it, actively helping her in the light. He was such an ass-man, like, obsessed with her butt, and it just lead to some funny moments of cute jealousy. He just did what he wanted and made it clear from the start that when he wants something, he takes it. In this case: Jensen.

“I shit you not, Jen. If anyone but me works on your glutes from now on, there’ll be hell to pay.” -Eli

Their chemistry was really nice. Their relationship seamlessly happened. It felt so natural, even with Eli's active pursuing and wooing, and inserting himself in certain situations and in many other ways lol. When they met, both of them had been celibate for years; Jensen because of her work and lack of time, and having issues with guys that might want her for her company or fortune, and Eli because he's been an undercover agent, who infiltrated the mafia for a long time, until he was put back into white collar type of investigations. Their dynamic was just perfect to me. Eli was hooked harder from the start but Jensen didn't fall far behind.

“I haven’t gotten her out of my damned head. I’ve jacked off like a middle schooler in heat to memories of her moving against me more times than I care to admit in the last thirty-six hours.” -Eli

The only reason why this is not a 5/5 stars from me, is because I wish that the mystery would've been more interesting, in the way where right from the start, I was able to call out all the bad guys who were framing Jensen. And at the end, it gave me a little bit of “And I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you meddling kids” vibes, with the revelations, how things happened. It was slightly cliché and predictable but I was still interested at how things would unfold, so it wasn't all that bad either. I'm willing to overlook it because I really enjoyed the MC's relationship. It was really fun to read.

“I’m saying that I’ve never been more grateful that my instincts are on point. Because I might’ve wanted you the first time I saw you, but right now? Baby, you throw all that other shit that should be standing between us out the window, the difference now is I don’t see myself ever wanting anyone else.” -Eli

I'm not sure I will be reading the next book called Broken Halo. It seems to be about Ellie, Jensen's little sister and seems like it will have a second chance trope and love-hate situation, which I'm normally not really into. And Trig is back after 10 years. Both of them haven't been celibate since they parted ways. She has a baby from OM that she married, and now is divorced...And he's been in relationships. From the reviews, it doesn't seem like something I would like, but I might get to it eventually. Not anytime soon though...

Disclosure: I don't rate beta reads because I get them prior to their ARC/final release versions.

Having said that, I really enjoyed Brynne's latest book, which has a few ties to her previous series but stands on its own and makes me look forward to more from the Montgomerys. It's been a pleasure to beta for her.

I don't hesitate to recommend her writing if you love: your heroes alpha enough to make you sigh and protective enough to make you swoon; heroines that you can relate to and root for; and some action and adventure to keep you turning that page. :)

RELECTURE : j'avais oublié à quel point j'adorais les Montgomerys =D
RE-READ : I forgot how much I loved the Montgomerys =D

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Finally the book of Eli =D I must admit that since I had seen him in The Killers series, I was eager to read his book and I was not disappointed at all >< I loved the main plot and if I had guessed the identity of the culprit, it was only a part of it and I must admit that I didn't expect at all some twists =D And Eli and Jensen were so cute together (this end <3)
PS: I'm ashamed, it took me a long time before I made the connection between Cam Hamilton and Cam and Paige from the Carpino series xD
PS 2 : I NEED SO MUCH THE STORY OF ELLIE AND TRIG !!!
3.5 ⭐️
“I don’t know if I should trust you.”
“I don’t know for sure if you’re innocent, so we’re even.”
“I am innocent, Eli.”
“Then you can trust me, Jen”
Synopsis:
Jen is under FBI investigation and Eli is one of the investigators. Although Jen is being framed, Eli should be keeping his distance and keeping things professional rather than feeding her information and getting busy with her between the sheets. But that’s easier said than done.
My Thoughts: The following are my thoughts about this book:
General:
- Trigger warning: murder (on page)
- Setting: Dallas, Texas
Characters:
- Eli (34, FBI agent): used to be an undercover agent working inside the mafia trying to nail them for RICO crimes. But when he was made, the FBI moved him to the white-collar crimes division. He’s also a Certified Fraud Examiner and a CPA
- ”The Bureau hired me right out of Harvard Business School. I went straight to the Academy after graduating with a major in accounting and a minor in criminal justice. After two years of working every type of case from fraud to embezzlement to money laundering, I went under to investigate the money trail in an organized crime case.”
- ”After working undercover, I’m a poster child for living in the gray and had that shit tattooed on my skin the day I was done working in the depths of the mafia.”
- The following words/phrases were used to describe Eli: responsible, politically incorrect, straight-talking, comfortable working in the gray area, an ass man
- Jen (30, CFO for the family business - Montgomery Industries): recently promoted to CFO and there are some who feel she doesn’t deserve the position.
- ”I always have to prove I can do the job I was handed instead of being handed the job because I proved I could do it.”
- The following words/phrases were used to describe Jen: loves a challenge, alone, has a passion for clean energy, made the Forbes Forty Under Forty list of the most powerful business people last year, calculated and measured, doesn’t make decisions without facts and data to back it up
Story Thoughts:
- I had to suspend disbelief when it came to Eli as I found it highly unlikely that the instant he touched Jen he was willing to cross major professional lines. Yes, he freely admitted that he straddled the “gray” line. But he crossed the line less than 24 hours later and all he had done was dance with her. Hmmm. 🤔🤔 I don’t think so.
- The bad guy was obvious right away. But I waited a Loooooong time for that to be revealed. However, his accomplice was a bit of a surprise. I must’ve been focusing on other things not to pick that out.
- The Bree character was out of place for me. Clearly unhinged but no clear understanding why she had it in for Jen. Yes, it was kind of explained as a career thing. But the focus on Jen was written in a way that made it seem highly personal rather than career driven. Anyway, it was unfortunate because it was a major aspect of the story and I didn’t get the connection
- The Montgomery’s are very, very rich. Something about all the name brands just made them come off as elite and pampered and, therefore, unrelatable.
- The foreshadowing led me to believe that something bad happened to Jen. But when it was revealed it was really nothing. I had this big thing built up in my mind of what happened to her so I don’t know if it was a big thing in a different book but or if it really was a useless moment in this book.
- It was pretty evenly matched between the mystery / criminal aspect and the romance. The storylines complimented each other, even if I couldn’t fully understand the reasons / connections for the bad guys.
- I’m not sure I understood Eli’s ultimate career choice to open up his own security firm. From his description it seemed like he was a fraud/CPA/numbers kind of guy. I don’t think I had a handle on his character and really what he was good at because it seemed like he was good at everything. I felt like there was a little bit of focus lacking in his character.
- I thought it was well written
- Why the appearance of Grady at the end of the book? I’m assuming he’s a character from a different book, but I didn’t get why he was in the story. Apparently he offered Eli a job which he “ couldn’t talk about” and which he didn’t take. So, why was that relevant and even written into the story?
- I feel like I picked apart the book with my comments above, but honestly I did enjoy the story. There were just some things that didn’t completely make sense and some character issues for me.
- This was my first book by this author, and although I wasn’t blown away, I fully intend to read more by this author in the future.
Overview:
- Do you need to read previous books in series?: There are appearances from characters in previous books, but I didn’t feel lost because I didn’t read those other books.
Quotes
“The Montgomerys aren’t only rich in land, but cattle, horse racing, and even breeding. At a young age, Kipp struck oil. If the Montgomerys thought they were wealthy as ranchers, it’s nothing compared to their few decades in the oil business.”
“I’ve got to see how Jensen Montgomery reacts when she finds out the man she met at the bar—who fucking enjoyed his hands on her—is also the new assistant investigator in a federal case being made against her.”
“You don’t know my parents. They have three grandkids and one on the way, but they want a brood. My mother talks about the huge family photos she doesn’t get to plan like she’s in mourning. If I bring a man home, I’d have to get a restraining order against her just to live in peace.”
“An investigation is nothing more than a puzzle for the mind.”
“Ellie cheers. Paige lets out a whoop. I down the rest of my wine and Griffin shits his pants. I hope the latter isn’t a sign of things to come.”
Spoilers ahead
I started this one shortly after it's release and paused it, in preparation for book 2 I restarted it today.
As badass Alpha as Eli was and as Independent as Jensen was I didn't much like ether of them. They both rubbed me the wrong way.
Eli's secret visits went on way too long
What the hell is up with all the brand name mentions.....we get it the Montgomery's are loaded sheesh
The actual mystery/suspense was well done, though it's obvious the brother in law was involved I didn't pick up on who his accomplice was
Thankfully no mentions of their pasts
An ok read for me, but as I've been a fan of this author for a while I'm hoping that on a reread my feelings change. 3* for now.
3.5 stars. I mostly enjoyed this story. There were a few parts that I felt were a little underwhelming and less developed than they could have been. But this hero? 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤 I loved him when he was first introduced in book two of the Killers series, and I still love him now.
Safe; no om/ow drama, no scenes with om/ow, no cheating, both celibate for some time.
🌟Brief Summary:
4 stars⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️for my man Eli❤️
Jen is a workaholic as the CFO of her family’s billion dollar company. She goes out with friends for some drinks and much needed RNR.
She meets hottie Eli they have an instant connection that they then take to the dance floor for one steamy dance…..and when the night ends they can’t stop thinking about each other.
😅So when the FBI shows up the next day to confiscate Jens office cause she is under investigation and one of the FBI agents is Eli….. well let’s just say Eli has a lot of explaining to do.
❣️Things I Liked/Loved❣️
-Eli❤️ now this is a HERO AND REAL MAN! He came from nothing, worked hard all his life, and took down a crime family. What I loved the most was why he was CELIBATE FOR AT LEAST 2 YEARS…. Cause he was undercover in the mafia and the woman that were options were either lol ode side pieces or woman of a mafia family. He didn’t like those options So he 😱KEPT IT IN HIS PANTS😱… shocking yes I know. But this proves that it is infact POSSIBLE.
‼️The man has standards and doesn’t let his dick rule his actions. 💕 oh how freshing! He wanted a woman that he liked no just any rando🥳 ….. like I said …..A REAL MAN!
-I like the h is this one. She was no doormat. She was smart, strong and independent.
Although she could have been more observant in some things.
-I like the overall storyline and this WAS an enjoyable read BUT I thought the execution could have been better. The mystery and the mild suspense.
Things I Did 💔 Not Like
‼️Lackluster writing - lots of boring spots with mundane details or scenes. The pacing could have been better. This would have been 5 stars if this had been better.
‼️Rushed ending I felt that things wrapped up quickly and conveniently.
‼️hated the constant plugs for her other books.
‼️so the mystery was dead in the water for me cause I picked out the “who done it”
I’m the first few chapters🤷🏼‍♀️ better execution of the suspense and mystery would have made this more enjoyable.
‼️The set up for the next book actually made me NOT want to read it…. A misunderstanding, a man who whores around for 10 yrs while the h is in a loveless abusive marriage. No thanks! I mean he didn’t even care that she almost DIED by her husband hands in his book 🙄 so enduring.
🥀 Hero:
Eli- FBI Agent and undercover agent
🦋 Heroine:
Jensen-CFO of her family Billion dollar company
💭 POV:
Duel first person
🔥 Burn Rate:
Medium full sex at 60% but they do other sexual stuff before that steam was a 3.5/5
😡/😍 Angst level:
Medium
❤️‍🔥 Sexy times & Descriptive sex:
Yes- but it was a little lack luster for me
🌓 Push/Pull:
Minor push aways from h to
H cause he is part of the FBI team that is building a case against her.
☠️ OW/OM Drama:
None
🤮 OW/OM Sex / Fluid or DNA Exchange:
None
🤬 Cheating:
None
👰🏼‍♀️ Virgins:
None
H- has been celibate for a few years- at least 2yr
h- celibate for a year
No condoms after the first few times
Talks of birth control and both tested clean
⛈️Separation/ 3rd Act Breakup:
None
Safety⚠️Triggers🗡️:
Drugging
Attempted murder
Framed for a crime
Arrests
Heroine that’s is a workaholic and needs a serious vacation😅
🌈Epilogue:
Yes
🥂HEA:
Yes
My opinion is just that… MY OPINION.
I know we all get passionate about our favorite reads and characters but we should respect each opinions a thoughts. ~Thank you
As soon as I finished the book and SIGHED in happiness; I thought to myself, "HOW can I accurately portray my love for the slow-burn mixed with an immediate attraction that Brynne did so well here?" I am going to try!! To make a long review-short, this book does it all: badass characters, a bit of intrigue and surprise, attraction from the get-go, and perseverance through the HEA. <3
I love a badass, Eli is a badass. He is an FBI agent who brought down a BIG crime ring and has the arrogance to match -- with a mix of No-Rules mentality you are immediately attracted to as a woman. You want a piece of THAT fo' sho!
I love a badass woman more though and JEN is a badass woman. She runs a company, takes no prisoners, but at the same time has her feminity and female lush that makes women strong. She is someone I enjoy reading and someone who carries herself in the way I aim to -- which immediately drew me in!
Two characters that stand strong on their own, mixed with the off the charts attraction and the constant flirt with rule breaking added some adrenaline into the read that made it that much better. I also found myself wrapped up in the secondary characters who followed the journey and that added a richness to the story that made it impossible to put down. It was amazing to re-visit with the couples in Jen's family from previous Brynne books too... always good for the soul!
Lastly, there are some fun twists I didnt expect -- and I have read ALOT of romance books; I cannot wait until you get to those parts! the MOST important part that made me LOVE this book... she spoke to my "Kristen Ashley" soul when she added "the major strife" BUT it didnt break the up for days/weeks/years, instead they worked through it together but still held the same amount of emotion and response from the reader.
I found Brynne Asher through her foray into ARR's Kindle Family and fell in love immediately; she fits perfectly in with the greats who recognize that slow burn, small strife, and second-hand characters are what really makes a Romance pop.
