Because the location for ‘The Ice’ is The North Pole, I recommend that you curl up in a nice cosy armchair, with a steaming cup of hot chocolate to avert the chills, though there are still chills aplenty in the storyline.
Current international law mandates that no single country owns the North Pole, or the region of the Arctic Ocean that surrounds it, and it is the race by various nations to access its resources that forms the basis for ‘The Ice’.
Anna Aune is accompanying 73 year old Professor Daniel Zakariassen on a scientific expedition to the North Pole, measuring the effects of climate change, when a distress flare suddenly lights up the dark polar night. It appears to originate from the Chinese Research Station, Ice Dragon. Anna and Daniel are unsure whether it’s a cry for help or a warning, but they do know they’ll have to find out.
What they discover is mass murder - all the researchers are dead - all of them badly mutilated, but who killed them and why? That’s Anna and Daniel’s task, and a very dangerous task at that. With numerous buildings, it’s obvious that the killer must be hiding in one of them, but can they find him before he finds them!
It’s clear that Anna is suffering from PTSD, and very slowly, her military past is revealed, one scene at a time, which makes this current tragedy very difficult for her to handle. With the added problem of a particularly fierce Arctic storm raging, there’s no getting away from this, nowhere to run to. There are thousands of miles of open terrain, albeit ice, but with the polar nights, there’s an overwhelming feeling of claustrophobia. In this vastness there’s nowhere to hide.

This is a gripping, claustrophobic and complex thriller from John Kare Raake, a Norwegian screenwriter, set in the Arctic featuring PTSD suffering soldier, the traumatised Anna Aune, trained to survive in extreme conditions and a woman who has been involved in a number of conflict ridden parts of the world, is accompanying 73 year old Professor Daniel Zakariassen on a scientific expedition. She had not wanted to do this but urged on by her father, with whom she had been recuperating after serious injuries and a coma, acquired in a nightmare scenario that saw her losing the love of her life, the French medic Yann Renault, working for MSF, who died after being abducted in Syria. From their hovercraft, the Sabvabaa, Anna sees a distress flare, with the dark, the adverse weather conditions, a terrible storm and limited visibility, it is not possible for any of the rescue services to respond, so Anna and Daniel make the decision to go themselves.
They head towards the The Ice Dragon, the Chinese research station, the position the flare appeared to come from. There they stumble on a nightmare scenario from hell, coming across frozen, stabbed and shot dead bodies, there is a ruthless and extremely dangerous killer around. A shocked Anna sets out to protect Daniel, whilst trying to figure out who is dead and what happened, attempting to avoid the same fate as the victims of the massacre. Coming across a badly injured man who refers to himself as Jackie and engineer Marco, Anna wants information and details of those working at the research station whilst trying to figure out if one or both of them is a killer. What exactly is the purpose of the Arctic research station, what were the Chinese looking into and was it this that got almost all of them killed? Anna and Daniel face the gravest of dangers as they strive to survive until rescue teams arrive.
The author does an incredible job of evoking the Arctic, a location where so many nations are racing to identify and access its potentially enormous resources. The storytelling just drips with atmosphere, there are rich descriptions, such as the numerous varieties of ice, all of them deadly, not to mention predators, such as the polar bears and the killer. The central character of Anna, a woman whose traumatised mind continually takes her back to her past and conversing with the dead Yann, is a woman with nothing left to lose, and there is nothing she will not do to find a mass killer. This is a dark, compulsive and unsettling thriller with an underlying sense of menace that builds and builds, with a unforgettable heroine at its centre who stumbles on secrets that lurk under the ice. The Ice is a searing, scintillating and claustrophobic thriller from Norway’s most successful screenwriter, John Kåre Raake, where it is not just the ice that is threatened at the North Pole. Former special forces soldier and PTSD sufferer Anna Aune has fled from everything and everyone, feeling she has nothing left to lose, and isolated herself together with 73-year-old researcher and professor Daniel Zachariassen on their hovercraft, the Sabvabaa, near the North Pole. They will document the devastation of climate change as they drift with the ice through the polar winter. On the day of the dead, All Saints' Day, an emergency rocket suddenly lights up the night-black sky, just above the Chinese research base, known as The Ice Dragon, a few kilometres away. Anna and Daniel are the only ones close enough to help. But is the distress signal a cry for help or a warning to stay away? When they reach the Chinese camp, they are met by a nightmarish sight. In the base's laboratory, they find the researchers frozen in motion and covered in ice. A sharp drop in temperature has killed them in a fraction of a second. It initially looks like a tragic accident, but it soon becomes clear that they have been killed...and that a ruthless and merciless killer is nearby. At the same time, it is blowing up into a raging polar storm. Kulda's deadly ravages and the killer's icy game make the rescue operation a struggle to survive. This is a compulsive, chilling and refreshingly original thriller that moves at rapid-fire pace and begins innocently enough before all hell breaks loose. The writing is engaging from the very beginning and Raake is adept at providing enough twists, surprises and misdirection that you'll find it almost impossible to put it down. Unlike many thrillers, the killer and their motive is well concealed and certainly not easy to guess or work out further adding to the enjoyment and creating a strong, intriguing mystery element to the plot. One of the aspects that stands out the most is the setting; Raake creates a stunning sense of place that you can transport yourself to instantly in your mind, and I understood the oppressive atmosphere the characters felt weighing on them being out in such a simultaneously beautiful but deadly place, especially with a serial killer on the loose. It's richly described from opening page to denouement and sings with authenticity. The tension is palpable all through the story, is ratcheted up as the narrative progresses and each character is well rounded and believable. This is a gritty, perturbing and enthralling read with a profoundly unsettling undertone that is present throughout. Highly recommended.

Ana stengdamasi pabėgti nuo ją užgriuvusios žiaurios tikrovės, kartu su profesoriumi Danieliumi Zacharijasenu išvyksta į Šiaurės ašigalį. Jie leidžiasi su laivu amfibija stebèti bei registruoti klimato pokyčių. Netikėtai vieną dieną dangų nutvieskia signalinės raketos šviesa. Panašu, jog ji sušvito netoliese kinų mokslinių tyrimų stoties. Tvenkiasi pūga ir Ana su Danieliumi supranta, jog kinai greitu metu pagalbos iš žemyno tikrai nesulauks. Tad jie ryžtasi pagelbėti nelaimės ištiktiems kinams. Pasiekę kinų tyrimų stotį, atvykėlius pasitinka šiurpus vaizdas..
Šio trilerio pradžia man pasirodė tikrai intriguojanti. Nuo pat pirmojo skyriaus užsisuko veiksmas ir vis norėjosi skaityti bei sužinoti kas vyksta toliau. Betęsiant istoriją manęs vis neapleido jausmas, jog šioje knygoje per daug bereikšmių detalių, aprašymų ir kitų smulkmenų be kurių manau, jog knyga būtų buvusi kur kas geresnė. Džiaugiuosi, jog skaitymas neprailgo, tačiau mano akimis šis trileris silpnokas. Visko šį kartą buvo tiesiog per daug ir tas viskas buvo tarsi suplakta į vieną.

Norjalaisen John Kåre Raaken esikoistrilleri Jää sijoittuu hyytävästi ikiroudan maille Pohjoisnavalle. Pohjoisnavalla oli eri maiden tutkimusryhmiä. Entinen erikoisjoukkojen kommando Anna Aune oli lähtenyt kahden hengen tutkimusmatkalle, koska toinen osapuoli oli isän vanha kaveri, joka tarvitsi apua. Tässä elämänvaiheessa Annasta oli hyväkin asia olla kaukana kaikesta ja kaikista, häntä eivät ääriolosuhteet pelottaneet. Mukavaa vaihtelua töihin toi virtuaalipuhelut venäläisen aseman Boriksen kanssa, jota hän ei ollut nähnyt koskaan, mutta ajatuksia oli mukava vaihtaa. Eräänä yönä Anna näki taivaalla hätäraketin.
Anna ja Daniel lähtivät tarkistamaan mistä hätäraketti tuli, ja mitä apua siellä tarvittiin. Tapahtumat olivat alkaneet jo aiemmin. Jostakin mielettömästä syystä eräs henkilö oli raivostunut ja surmannut melkein kaikki työkaverinsa. Annaa ei pelottanut kohdata murhamiehiä, sillä hän oli ollut useammassa sodassa ja ampunut itsekin. Nyt piti selvittää mitä oli tapahtunut ja kuka oli tekijä.
Kyseisellä tutkimusasemalla oli tutkittu maapallon alkuaineita, mutta oli löydetty myös jotain muuta, jotain josta kukaan ei saanut tietää mitään, sillä seuraukset voisivat olla tuhoisat, jollekin osapuolelle. Mutta onneksi Anna Aune on terävä tutkija, joka osaa yhdistellä palapelin osia toisiinsa. Häntä eivät huijaa murhamiehet eivätkä pelastustiimiläisetkään.
Lumi, jää, kylmyys ja jääkylmä vesi jäädyttäisivät kenet vaan, mutta kirjan vauhdikkaat tapahtumat ja vaihtuvat koukut pitävät jännityksessä mukana. John Kåre Raaken Jää on hyisen hyvä trilleri.

Skaičiau ir visą laiką galvoje sukosi dvi knygos: „Skaitmeninė tvirtovė“ ir „Meteoritas“. Jos skaitytos dar mokyklos laikais, bet tada jas skaitė visi – rašytojas pasigavo arkliuką ir visai puikiai ties tuo dirbo. Tad pasiėmus į rankas „Ledą“ gavau ne tai, ko tikėjaus. Ar čia daug lavonų? O taip. Tik ne krauju paplūdusių, o šįkart į varveklius virtusių.
Knyga pasakoja apie ekspediciją Šiaurės ašigalyje, į kurią išsiruošia buvusi profesionali karė, snaiperė Ana ir senas šeimos draugas mokslininkas Danielis. Įsikūrus, sakykime, sąlyginiai ramiame pasaulio krašte ledynus supurto drebėjimas. Ne žemės drebėjimas, o didžiulė tragedija – Ana su kolega randa keliolika į ledą sustingusių, pašautų, nudurtų ar tiesiog nuo šalčio mirusių kinų. Ima atrodyti, kad mokslininkas ir karė pakliuvo į veiksmo filmą be išeities. Tačiau ką iš tiesų tie kinai čia veikė?
Labai daug veiksmo. Ko jau ko, o jo čia netrūko, posūkis po posūkio. Plyti ledynai, sniegas, pūgos, viskas sukasi ratu, tačiau įvykis po įvykio neleido nuobodžiauti. Matyt, ne šiaip sau knygą rašė scenaristas – tas jaučiasi. Skaitai ir gali matyti, kaip viskas atrodytų ekrane. Kone kiekvienas skyrelis pasibaigia su klaustuku ar neužsibaigusia scena. Juk panašiai ir filmuose, kuomet žiūrovui įtempčiausioje vietoje perjungiama kita siužetinė linija ar… reklama. Bet tai šiuo atveju neerzino, o kaip tik kelė dar daugiau įtampos.
Man vis tik labiausiai patiko romano linija apie Anos praeitį ir jos misijas Sirijoje, jos meilę darbui, kovai, vyrui, kurio likimas neaiškus iki pat pabaigos, nors galime numanyti, kas nutiko. Skaitydama vis laukdavau šių Sirijos įterpinių, manau, kad jie pridėjo daug vertės prie šio trilerio, o be to, padėjo daug geriau atskleisti Anos personažą.
Bet vis tik kodėl šio trilerio nebėgu labai stipriai girti ir vertinti pačiais aukščiausiais įvertinimais? Nes per painu. Per daug visko, ko mano akimis žiūrint – nereikėjo. Pačioje knygoje – vos keli veikėjai, tačiau pabaigoje į ledynus jų sugūža gyva galybė, kai kurių reikšmė ir prasme taip ir lieka neaiški. Skaitau apie Joną ir Martyną ir Antaną, neskiriu jų vieno nuo kito, ir išvis, kodėl jie čia?
Toks įspūdis susidarė knygos pabaigoje, kai teko versti puslapius atgal, kad atkapstyčiau kas ir kaip.

Ja šis būtu TV bojeviks - būtu tīri ok, grāmata - gatavs scenārijs. Bet detektīvs, sorry, tas īsti nav. Varētu teikt - viegla fantastika:) Cik nu lasīts par Ziemeļiem, tur ir paŗak skarbi apstākļi, lai diennakts garumā (laikam tik ilgi bija) varētu tusēt apkārt, izmirkt vairākas reizes, satikties ar leduslāci utt. Tā īsti neiesaku, varbūt vienīgi tad, ja karstuma vilnis pie mums sasniegs 40+, var palasīt par aukstumu, sniegu ledu un leduslāčiem:)

A chilly read that I wanted to like far more than I did. The book was longer than it needed to be with the middle being hard to get through though the ending does begin get more fast paced. There was two points the book could have finished at and it just kept going which made the whole thing drag on but the moments of action were good and figuring who the killer was did keep me guessing so it was enjoyable in that regard.

Alkaa taistelu aikaa vastaan. Kirjan tunnelma on piinaavaa, lähes kauhun vivahteita hipova. Suljettu tila, mielenvikainen sarjamurhaaja sekä äärimmäiset olosuhteet. Jää piti otteessaan, pakotti kääntämään sivuja vimmaisesti. Loppu oli ehkä hieman turhan pitkitetty, mutta muuten ihan älyttömän hyvä trilleri.
Entinen erikoisjoukkojen sotilas Anna Aune ja hänen tutkija kollegansa Daniel huomaavat eräänä yönä taivaalle ammutun hätäraketin. He suuntaavat etsimään raketin ampujaa ja päätyvät kiinalaisten salaiselle tutkimusasemalle, jonka kaikki työntekijät on murhattu ja jäätyneet luonnottomiin asentoihin. See oli üpriski põnev raamat.
Kohati oli tõesti infot väga palju ja asjad läksid jube segaseks, aga mulle tundubki ,et see raamat oleks kuidagi filmina olulised parem.

On a quasiment toustes vu des films américains sponsorisés par l’armée avec un personnage soldat ou vétéran qui a vécu de sombres choses et s’en souvient aux moments opportuns sous la forme de flashback mais parvient à surpasser ses traumas pour avancer. Sauf que là, c’est une femme norvégienne au pôle nord, qui a du beef avec un chinois, et est amie avec des gens (chinois, russes, américains). Au final, probablement pas sponsorisé par l’armée US, mais même si pas une grande littérature, ça passe bien, ça se lit vite, ça bouge, y a une tension.

Jo tiek daug, kas jis net skirstomas į rūšis. Ledujai. Mėlynasis ledas. Giluminis ledas. Ledynas. Bet čia, visai kitaip nei kitose Anos matytose pasaulio dalyse, nebuvo nei krūmų, nei gėlių, nei upelių, nei miškų, nei riedulių. Ledas tįsojo kaip milžiniškas kūnas per visą Šiaurės ašigalį."
Tikrai įtemptas, su daug ledo, šalčio ir veiksmo trileris, kuris vyksta Šiaurės ašigalyje. Rodos, be plytinčių ledynų čia daugiau nieko nėra, tad įvykdyta masinė žmogžudystė mokslinėje stotyje, primena siaubo filmo scenarijų. O tai nieko nuostabaus, nes knygos autorius išties yra scenaristas ir tai pirmasis jo romanas.
Pagrindiniai veikėjai norvegė Ana Aunė ir jos kolega, 73 metų mokslininkas Danielis. Ana sutiko vykti į šiaurės ašigalį, ekspediciją, bet nepažadejo iš jo sugrįžti. Vystantis istorijai paaiškėja, jog ji kenčia nuo potrauminio streso sindromo.
Žmogžudysčių mokslinėje srityje tyrimas kaitaliojasi su kita istorija – Anos karine misija Sirijoje ir ji savo siužetu pasirodė gan lygiavertė pagrindinei „Ledo“ pasakojimo linijai. O labiausiai man patiko trilerio atmosfera ir realistiškai perteikta šiauriausios ir nuošaliausios mūsų planetos vietos aplinka.
Tad nėra jau toks Šiaurės ašigalis nykus ir nuobodus, nes romane autorius visai įdomiai atskleidžia didžiųjų valstybių susidomėjimą šia teritorija. Taip, čia neatsilieka ir Rusija, yra paminėtas ir Putinas. Aš nuo pat vaikystės jaučiu nepaaiškinamą trauką ekspedicijoms, sniegui ir šalčiui, tad perskaičiau su malonumu.
„Ledas" patiks tiems, kurie mėgsta trumpus skyrelius, daug veiksmo ir greitai verčiamus puslapius.

I really like the concept of this book because it is clever, and it is different. The author was hugely successful in transporting the reader to the North Pole - I certainly felt the chilly intimidation of the ice every time I picked it up.
On the other hand, for me the narrative arc wasn’t structured in the best way and I was ready for the climax at only a third of the way through. This made reading the remainder of the story more of a struggle. Some of the leaps between parts of the plot also felt a little tenuous.
It certainly didn’t lack action or description, however, which allowed me to create a clear image of the Chinese research station and what was taking place…

A chilly and involving read, with a fantastic setting described pitch perfectly and a fast paced edge of the seat feel throughout.
Mass murder in an icy location allows our feisty and engaging heroine to shine and I was immersed in the evolving situation from first page to last.
One to watch in 2021. Very pleased to see this will be a series.

Der Mystery-Thriller „The Ice“ des norwegischen Autors John Kåre Raake, spielt in der unendlichen, eisigen Landschaft des Nordpols. Anna Auer, eine ehemalige Soldatin begleitet eine wissenschaftliche Zweimann-Expedition ihres Mentors Professor Daniel Zakariassen. Als sie eines Nachts einem Notsignal folgen, stoßen sie auf die geheime Forschungsbasis der Chinesen und entdecken, dass beinahe die gesamte Basis auf grauenvolle Weise und unter mysteriösen Umständen ums Leben gekommen ist. Anna, die sich eigentlich geschworen hatte, nie wieder eine Waffe anzufassen, muss plötzlich gemeinsam mit dem Professor und zwei fremden Chinesen um ihr Leben kämpfen, denn eins ist sicher: Wer oder was auch immer die Forscher getötet hat, ist noch da draußen in der eisigen Kälte…
Was haben die Chinesen hier am Nordpol erforscht und was hat die Forschungsstation der Russen damit zu tun? Der Kampf um den Nordpol beginnt und es ist ein Wettlauf mit der Zeit.
Raake versteht es außerordentlich gut, die Bedrohlichkeit des unendlichen Eises, der Kälte und der Einsamkeit der einzelnen Personen darzustellen. Das Setting am Nordpol inmitten von Eis löst Unruhe und Gefühle der Angst vor dem Unbekannten aus und man fühlt sich winzig und unbedeutend.
Abgeschnitten von der Außenwelt und ohne Aussicht auf baldige Rettung, kämpfen die ungleichen Überlebenden ums nackte Überleben. Als Leser erhält man nur Einblick in Annas Gedanken und Gefühle und so fragt man sich, wer von den anderen ein falsches Spiel spielen könnte und ob der Mörder nicht längst unter ihnen weilt.
Die eisige Umgebung und die sehr wissenschaftliche Ausrichtung erinnert an Lincoln Childs „Nullpunkt“, Thomas Thiemeyers „Valhalla“ oder Dan Browns „Meteor“ und bietet einen ebenso düsteren und spannenden Thriller, der den Leser das ein oder andere Mal um das Schicksal der Figuren bangen lässt.

Tai no, Anna on hahmona hienosti rakennettu ja ihan hyvin alku viekin mukanaan: lukija ei tiedä lukeeko jännäriä vai kauhua, sen verran hienosti pimeän, tuntemattoman ja pelottavan kanssa mennään.
Sitten tarina harhautuu, jumiutuu ja muuttuu liian kliseiseksi, toimintaelokuvamaiseksi. Välillä junnataan niin kauan paikallaan, että äänikirjaa kunnellessa luulee tiedoston pompanneen taaksepäin.
Harmittaa, että jaksoin loppuun asti.

Nothing happens for 3/4 of the book. There are 4 characters and a dog for the main, the dog is the best written and most interesting character.

I was drawn to this book due to its story being set in the North Pole - which is a first for me. I was slightly concerned that, like some other books set in exotic locations, said setting is only for a small portion of the book and was pleased to discover that this was not the case at all for The Ice. We're off to the Arctic immediately upon starting, and although there are flashbacks that take place elsewhere, most of the story is set in a highly tense showdown at the Chinese base in the North Pole.
I felt like this one took awhile to get going, but once I had arrived on the Ice Dragon with Daniel and Anna I couldn't put the book down. That being said, even in the early chapters I thought the author did a really good job with scene-setting: The exoticness of the location as well as building up Anna as an intriguing character with a mysterious backstory kept me well entertained before the events of the present story kicked in. The flashbacks were also very cleverly worked in, and the author has a true gift in being able to capture the very different atmospheres (albeit both tense) between the flashbacks in the Anna-Yann scenes and the North Pole scenes, and I very much enjoyed going back and forth between the two storylines.
I was slightly disappointed by the , but in a way what drove my enjoyment for most of the book was the contrasting tension between the active showdown at the Pole vs. Anna's flashback, something that I thought was lost a bit at the end. , but I guess that was a realistic representation of how something like that would probably have panned out.
The introduction suggests that the author has written other books featuring Anna Aune, and I'd be very interested to see how she fares in other contexts - and whether or not there is more to her backstory that remains to be revealed. Those have yet to be translated to English (at least as far as I can find), and I'm eagerly awaiting the day that they are. I have often really enjoyed books chosen as part of the Pushkin Vertigo collection, and this one was no different. 5 stars, as this one is quite different to other crime/mystery/thrillers - and it did pull me in right from the blurb as I couldn't wait to start reading once my copy arrived, and neither did I want to stop reading once I'd started.

Pohjoisnavalle sijoittuva trilleri etenee hyvin sujuvasti eteenpäin ja tempaisee lukijan mukaansa. Kirjaa valitessa minua kiinnosti erikoinen tapahtumapaikka pohjoisnapa ja kylmissä olosuhteissa tapahtuvat tapahtumat. Kirjailijana Raake ei ole entuudestaan tuttu, mutta vakuutti kirjoittamisellaan. Jostain syystä en kuitenkaan päässyt ihan riittävästi tunnetilaan, jossa säikyn kaikkea kun olen kirjan lukenut niin kuin usein trillereitä lukiessa käy.
Kirja menee Helmet- lukuhaasteeseen 2024 kohtaan numero 40. Kirjassa on erittäin kylmä tai kuuma. Nyt oltiin kylmissä oloissa.

3.5 stars! Ikke dum!! Kan absolutt se dette som en film! Var kanskje LITT for mye hvor mye som skulle til for å kverke the bad guy, men det må man vel regne med. Fikk litt vibber av Michelle Pavers Dark matter, og det er kult. :)

Gripping, cinematic and fast-pace thriller set at an Artic research station near the North Pole. A two-person Norwegian team responds to a distress flare at a Chinese base, and finds carnage. The inhospitable setting is beautifully evoked, and there is a constant sense of menace as the main characters have to work out what has happened while avoiding the same fate themselves. The characters are lightly sketched but believable, and there is a good interplay between the main character’s backstory and the action. The pace is absolutely relentless – this is the kind of book you pick up when you want the outside world to fade. Extra points for a strong female lead and good use of a dog!

Puiki atmosfera. Nesuvaldoma šiaurinio ašigalio didybė. Veikėjai irgi atrodo neblogai. Tiesa pagrindinį posūkį įžvelgiau gana anksti, bet tai netrukdė mėgautis stichijom ir politinėm/karinėm šachmatų partijom.

Suspenseful and well written. The mystery is very claustrophobic and hits all the right beats. Looking forward to more of this!

Kylmälle pohjoisnavalle sijoittuva tiivistunnelmainen ja toiminnan täyteinen trilleri. Mietin kolmen ja neljän tähden välillä, mutta päädyin neljään, koska tätä oli pakko lukea koko ajan eteenpäin.
