Hitomi-chan and her senpai Usami-kun are spending more and more time together, both at home and around town. As they get to know each other better, Usami finds himself wanting to get even closer to Hitomi, who seems to be opening up around him! Is their budding romance finally going somewhere?
Festival dress-up mania! We get a sports festival with cheerleaders, a town festival with yukatas, and a cultural festival with a cosplay cafe. A bit of an overload there.
Once again, if you can get past the constant breast exploitation, there are sweet little crushes between a tall girl and a short guy with lots of blushing and secret smiles.
Usami has something big to get off his chest, but Hitomi is not only popular with him. With classmates, scary girls, kids, brothers, overzealous teachers, and desserts all vying for her time, does he stand a chance?
The focus is back on the burgeoning relationship between our leads as well as the burgeoning… uh… bust of Hitomi-chan. Even with the resumption of your regularly scheduled boobery, this still stays the course it set for itself last time as a pretty sweet book.
Usami is a bit of a nothing, but he’s a kind-hearted nothing who always has a good word for Hitomi and makes her feel better about herself when she’s embarrassed. It’s enough - the book would clearly rather talk about Hitomi, which it gently self-parodies during the football game (her brother is a little overboard for a pick-up game with grade schoolers).
This story continues to be quite amusing, which is what I’d hoped for all along and I’m glad it has stayed funny after the second volume was so good. Usami and Hitomi end up at the theatre on a movie date that is nothing but bashful hormones and call-outs and blends both things the story does well into one tidy package.
Hitomi herself is basically like a more fun (and more respected by the mangaka) version of the titlular (erm…) character from Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out!. There’s a story about a monster-sized sundae that doesn’t make fun of her appetite, but instead celebrates her constitution, and her incredible politeness in that segment is such a brilliant turn for her character that I just loved.
Yes, there are jokes about her chest size. There’s one dud involving a catsuit that is just ridiculous and definitely reminds me of the lame jokes from the first volume, but a lot of them are clever. The entire relay race is just great. It’s really got the balance of fan service to other jokes pretty much spot on at this point.
We’re also getting a nicely expanded supporting cast that gives everything a boost. The extremely extra theatre teacher makes a great addition and her zeal for costumes reminds me of how extra the drama club teacher was in my high school to a tee.
That scary delinquent girl who seems to be scared and/or crushing on Hitomi remains a personal favourite. Her story this time is super hilarious and the ending promises yet another escalation of how misconstrued their entire dynamic is.
She shows up again during the school festival, which I think might be one of the dumbest and therefore best haunted house scenes I’ve seen in ages. It’s the best case scenario of a joke just escalating and escalating. There’s an omake that also preserves the ratio of stupid : excellent because of how it’s presented.
Is this the next great manga? Nah, it’s not. It still has its service bits, it still has great art yet very same-y character designs that make picking people out a pain. It’s not especially original. Then again, it also has a ton of heart and great gags that count for a lot.
3.5 stars - not the revelation the last volume was, but still just as good and a continuation of what I came to love about this series with all the changes last time. One of the best results from my ‘maybe I’ll give the second volume a chance’ policy.
I feel the series has got better with each volume and not only that it's building up at a nice pace, not sure if this is going to be one of those almost romances for ages before finally something happens or if the feelings are revealed sooner, at the moment I can say I'm happy with either.
The last chapter when Hitomi-chan's brother comes in are just so funny!
If you're a fan of Komi Can't Communicate and Uzaki Chan Wants to Hang Out, you will love this book. As where some books are "Will they? Won't they?" this book champions "Will they? Yes, but when." Readers who enjoy slice of life manga with some spice added to the mix should be sure to read this.
A cute quick read. The artwork is just okay, backgrounds are on the skimpy side and layouts are boring but I love Hitomi and Usami as they get closer and closer as a potential couple.
So far the funniest one in the series. One of the best cultural references to lone wolf and cub I’ve ever read. Just that one reference made me laugh for a good while.
